Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson has received a restructured contract extension that runs through 2023. The school made the announcement on Friday. Terms of the deal were not released. Anderson took the job before the start of the 2014 season. He has led the Red Wolves to a pair of Sun Belt Conference titles and six consecutive bowl appearances. He is one of just two active Group of Five head coaches in the nation to lead their programs to at least two conference championships and six bowl games since 2014.   In the lead-up to the 2020 NFL Draft, Walter Fletcher felt confident that by the end of that weekend in April he'd at least receive a shot as an undrafted free agent. Fletcher had earned Division II All-America recognition during the three years he spent at Edinboro prior to transferring to Ball State. The running back had showcased his versatility at the Division I level at BSU, running well in addition to catching the ball out of the backfield and returning kicks. He had even earned a spot in the 2020 SPIRAL Tropical Bowl in Florida. But, as each of the three days of the draft came and went, Fletcher didn't hear his name called as teammate Danny Pinter would. In the time that followed the draft, Fletcher wouldn't see an undrafted opportunity arise as teammate Ray Wilborn would. And Fletcher still hasn't.

Fletcher hasn't lost hope, though, nor has he given up on his dream. "It was definitely a tough three or four days," Fletcher said. "I just felt like, personally, I had a lot of people rooting for me. You put in so much time and effort the last two months leading up to the pro day, and then even the draft … I feel like I just fell short after everything that I've been through and worked for. I just felt like I fell short and it was hard to push through that and get over that. But, I know that hopefully one day I'll get an opportunity." Fletcher would later add: "It's just a matter of when that call will be and just staying ready." - Star Press

When asked by The Star Press in the week after the combine why Pinter had the potential to capitalize on the pre-draft process, both Neu and Johnson credited Pinter's status as a "football junkie." Pinter embodies the type of individual on and off the field that Neu and Johnson - who've used their respective pasts in the sport to advise Pinter at times - believe any NFL team would want. He is someone who, by his own admission, can talk to NFL coaches about the ins and outs of BSU's offense all day - which Neu would expand to Pinter's responsibilities in the protections the Cardinals ran, run schemes they called and more.

Pinter would go out of his way to mentor his fellow offensive linemen at Ball State, especially when it came to watching film, outside of the usual time they'd spend with coaches. And Pinter, according to Johnson, is "the truest (Chicago) Bears fan I think I've ever met." Johnson said he's talked to scouts about the time, during this past fall camp, prior to one of BSU's offensive line meetings, Pinter was able to name the entire Bears roster from the 2010 season. Who was active, on injured reserve, on the physically unable to perform list - everything, with proper spelling and no help. "I was a pretty big Bears fan growing up," said Pinter, whose collection of Bears jerseys impressed Neu. "But now I got to kind of disconnect from that and just be a fan of whatever team I'm (going to) have a chance to play for here." - Star Press

2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: Danny Pinter, OG, Ball State,...Pinter, hailing from South Bend, Indiana, is one of about 300 prospects who will participate in the weeklong event in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium (Feb. 24-March 1). Offensive linemen are tentatively scheduled to go through their on-field workouts on Friday, Feb. 28. Drills at the NFL Combine include the 40-yard dash, 225-pound bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle. NFL Network will provide broadcast coverage on Feb. 28 from 4 to 11 p.m.

Pinter anchored Ball State's offensive line at right tackle the last two years after making the transition from tight end following his sophomore campaign. He was one of four Cardinals to earn first team All-Mid-American Conference honors in 2019 and the first BSU offensive lineman to earn first team all-league accolades since 2013. He went on to showcase his skills against other NFL hopefuls at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Pasadena, California, a month ago. - Ball State Football

Layne Hatcher passed for 393 yards and four touchdowns, including a late 13-yarder to Jonathan Adams, and Arkansas State held to beat Florida International 34-26 on Saturday night in the Camellia Bowl. The Red Wolves (8-5) came back to life offensively for a final big drive, highlighted by All-American and game MVP Omar Bayless's 52-yard catch down to the 12. Then they had two interceptions in the final minutes. The Panthers (6-7) converted a fourth-and-5 play with a pass to Austin Maloney, who matched the huge game of Bayless. But James Morgan's overthrow on the next play was intercepted by Jeremy Smith, who returned it 21 yards into FIU territory.

Arkansas State worked the clock down to 37 seconds and a punt left FIU starting at its 12 with no timeouts remaining. The Panthers got one first down on a pass interference call against Logan Wescott, who tipped the next pass into the arms of Darreon Jackson to seal the win. Hatcher completed 27 of 51 passes and had an interception. Bayless, the nation's No. 2 receiver, caught nine passes for 180 yards and a touchdown. Morgan passed for 312 yards and a touchdown before the ending interceptions. Maloney caught 10 passes for 178 yards and the TD. - AP College Football
