  South Alabama cornerback Ryan Melton has left the team with plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he announced late Monday. Melton - who has two seasons of eligibility remaining - started 12 games in his South Alabama career, nine in 2020 and three in 2021. The West Point, Miss., native totaled 40 tackles, four pass breakups and a forced fumble in 31 career games. Melton was one of three players to start at field cornerback for the Jaguars in 2021, with Devin Rockette exhausting his eligibility and Davyn Flenord giving up football to concentrate on his basketball career. Ole Miss transfer Jamar Richardson was listed as the first-team field corner at the end of spring practice, with redshirt freshman Jason Brooks listed as the backup. - Birmingham News

  2021 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE SECOND-TEAM (COACHES): P - Matt Rigney, Austin Peay,...Rigney became just the third Governors punter to average more than 40 yards per punt over a season, his 40.73 yards per punt ranking fifth on the program's single-season list. His 40.84 punting average in league play was second-best among the league's punters. Among his 55 punts, he saw 14 downed inside the 20-yard line, and seven go for 50-plus yards, including a 60-yarder against Tennessee State. His 46.63 punting average against the Tigers wasn't his best average of the year, but the outing saw him boom an impressive three 50-yard kicks out of the eight he attempted that day. - Austin Peay Football

  2021 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE SECOND-TEAM (COACHES): ILB - Jack McDonald, Austin Peay,...From walk-on tight end to back-to-back All-OVC honors at linebacker, it has been quite a career for McDonald. After earning first team recognition last spring, McDonald had to find new ways to make an impact and yet still ranked among the league's Top 10 in tackles (6.5 per game) and Top 20 in tackles for loss (0.6 per game). McDonald had a pair of 10-tackle outings (at Eastern Kentucky and against Southeast Missouri) and recorded 2.5 tackles for loss against Eastern Illinois. - Austin Peay Football

  2021 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE FIRST-TEAM (COACHES): NICKEL - Kordell Jackson, Austin Peay,...In a season hampered by an injury suffered at Ole Miss that ultimately ended his season at the end of October, the Govs' elder statesman again found his form at times. He opened the season with sacks in back-to-back games (Chattanooga and Ole Miss). Jackson then posted a 12-tackle day at Southeast Missouri and finished the season with 41 stops - his 6.8 tackles per game are a career-best mark. And so it was for Edwards, who followed his two-pick day at Chattanooga with five more interceptions to finish the season with seven - second-most in program history.   2021 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE FIRST-TEAM (COACHES): WR - Baniko Harley, Austin Peay,...Harley opened 2021 with a touchdown reception in each of his first five games, tacking on 100-yard receiving days at Chattanooga (128 yards) and Eastern Kentucky (136). He saved his best performance for last, notching a career-best 148 yards and a touchdown at Tennessee State. Along the way, Harley became the fifth receiver to surpass 2,000 career yards, finishing with 2,201 receiving yards. The pick-six was part of a 20-point second quarter that saw the team open up a 28-6 halftime advantage.   Jaylen Swain returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown and Malik Feaster returned a fumble 100 yards for a score to help Jacksonville State hold off North Alabama 27-24 in nonconference action on Saturday. The Gamecocks (2-1) pulled within 10-6 on Alen Karajic's 39-yard field goal with 1:50 left in the first half. On the ensuing possession North Alabama quarterback Parker Driggers fumbled on the goal line after a 15-yard run with 58 seconds left in the half and Feaster scooped and scored to put JSU up 13-10.

The Gamecocks' defense delivered again in the third quarter on Swain's pick-6 to push their lead to 20-10. The Lions (0-3) answered using a six-play, 65-yard drive, culminating with Brady Pope's 4-yard TD run to pull within 20-17 with 3:16 left in the third quarter. JSU regained a 10-point lead on freshman quarterback Matthew Caldwell's 8-yard TD run with 10:31 left in the game. The Lions again pulled within three points on Blake Dever's 47-yard scoring strike to Cortez Hall with 2:17 left, but they failed to get the ball back. Caldwell completed 10 of 19 passes for 98 yards with an interception for the Gamecocks. He also ran for 27 yards on five carries. Josh Samuel rushed 20 times for 107 of JSU's 211 yards on the ground. Dever was 15-of-26 passing for 283 yards with one interception for North Alabama.   Draylen Ellis threw for 325 yards and four scores to four different receivers and Austin Peay beat Chattanooga 30-20 Thursday night in the season opener for both teams. Chattanooga entered as the preseason 18th-ranked team in the FCS and Austin Peay No. 20. Ellis found a diving Drae McCray in the back-right corner of the end zone as he rolled to his right on first-and-goal from the Mocs' 8-yard line for the go-ahead score with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.

The score made it a 23-20 contest and the Governors led the rest of the way. Ellis later connected with Ahmaad Tanner on a 4-yard touchdown to seal it at 30-20 with 8:14 left to play. Baniko Harley caught six passes for 137 yards and a score for Austin Peay and Tanner had 19 carries for 103 yards.
