South Alabama cornerback Ryan Melton has left the team with plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he announced late Monday. Melton - who has two seasons of eligibility remaining - started 12 games in his South Alabama career, nine in 2020 and three in 2021. The West Point, Miss., native totaled 40 tackles, four pass breakups and a forced fumble in 31 career games. Melton was one of three players to start at field cornerback for the Jaguars in 2021, with Devin Rockette exhausting his eligibility and Davyn Flenord giving up football to concentrate on his basketball career. Ole Miss transfer Jamar Richardson was listed as the first-team field corner at the end of spring practice, with redshirt freshman Jason Brooks listed as the backup. - Birmingham News
