Two weeks before the start of the season, Ole Miss football still isn't done building its roster. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin announced the addition of offensive lineman Jordan Rhodes to the roster Monday. Rhodes, who played in 20 games over the last three years at South Carolina, is a 6-foot-4, 335-pound lineman originally from Fairburn, Georgia. Rhodes has two years of eligibility remaining and will be immediately eligible to play. Rhodes played in four games for South Carolina in 2020 without making a start. He played in all 12 of the Gamecocks' games in 2019. Rhodes entered his name into the transfer portal in April. This addition marks two veteran offensive linemen added by the Rebels this summer. Ole Miss also brought in Utah transfer Orlando Umana, who is expected to start at center when healthy. - The Clarion Ledger

Another South Carolina football player is reportedly heading for a new stop. Redshirt senior offensive lineman Jordan Rhodes entered the transfer portal Friday a USC athletic department spokesperson confirmed to The State. Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports first reported the news. Rhodes played in 20 games over the past three seasons, mostly in a reserve role. He opted out of the 2020 season before opting back in. Rhodes wasn't among the linemen working with the first-team offense during the practice portions that have been open to the media. He was rated a three-star recruit in the 2017 class and chose South Carolina over offers from Missouri, Cincinnati and Mississippi State, among others. - Rock Hill Herald

This certainly wasn't how Colorado head coach Karl Dorrell wanted to settle on a starting quarterback. On Monday, Dorrell announced that sophomore JT Shrout has a "significant injury" to his knee, sustained during the Buffaloes' scrimmage at Folsom Field on Saturday. Returning freshman Brendon Lewis is now slated to be CU's starter when the Buffs open the season Sept. 3 at Folsom Field against Northern Colorado. "They did the MRI and he does have a significant injury and he will be out for a period of time," Dorrell said.

Asked if there was a chance Shrout could return this year, Dorrell said, "I don't know. We'll see after the surgery. I know that sometimes when they get in there, they find out, 'Oh, it wasn't as bad.' It's hard to tell." For now, however, it's a tough break for Shrout and the Buffs. Lewis and Shrout had battled all offseason for the starting job, with coaches often saying the competition was extremely close. Dorrell had planned to settle on a starter later in camp. On Friday, he said Shrout and Lewis have been "literally 1A and 1B. They both are playing really well." - Daily Camera

While the linebacker room is happy to have Hansen back, defensive backs coach Aaron Henry finds his own group stacked with transfers from winning programs. Specifically, senior Prather Hudson (from Georgia) and sophomore Eddie Smith (from Alabama) are expected to make an immediate contribution. Smith saw action in nine games with the Crimson Tide between 2018 and 2020, winning a national title in his final season in Tuscaloosa, Ala. "You're talking about a guy who's experienced," Henry said of Smith. "He sees things before they happen. He's teaching a lot of other guys in our room things like, 'Hey, I'm looking at this guy split. This is what he does with his gloves when he's running out of the huddle.' So just little things like that." - News Gazette Tribune

  08/13/21 - Dahu GreenrSr/2022, Arkansas State, 6-4, 194 (DS#120 WR) + More +

If quarterback was the most discussed position with last year's Red Wolves, then wide receiver was second-most, mainly because of the human highlight reel that was Adams. The Jonesboro native had twice as many yards as the next-closest ASU wideout and his 12 touchdowns were also a team best. There's no one player that's going to replace Adams, but it looks like the Red Wolves have a deep group that could cause problems for opposing secondaries. It'll start with Dahu Green, who is entering his fifth season at ASU and his sixth year of college football. Ever since transferring in from Oklahoma, Green has played only 12 games -- none in 2017, one in 2018 and 11 the last two seasons combined. Yet when he's been healthy, he makes for an easy target at 6-4 and can be a downfield threat, especially for a prolific deep passer like Hatcher. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  07/25/21 - Marcel MurrayrSr/2024, Arkansas State, 5-10, 206 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Arkansas State junior running back Marcel Murray was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List on Wednesday. The prestigious honor is annually awarded to the nation's top college running back. Murray is one of 82 players from across the nation to receive a spot on the watch list for the award and earned a spot for the third consecutive season. He is one of five A-State backs to earn the recognition in at least two different seasons and just the third to do so in three different years, joining standouts Warren Wand (2016-18) and Reggie Arnold (2007-09) as the only three to do so.

The Red Wolves have now had a player tabbed to the Doak Walker Award Watch List nine consecutive seasons dating back to 2013. Murray was named Third Team All-Sun Belt in 2018, the same season he was awarded as the league's Freshman of the Year after rushing for 860 yards and eight scores. In his three seasons as a Red Wolf, the Hiram, Georgia, native has rushed for 1,846 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was also an Honorable Mention All-Sun Belt Conference pick in 2019. - KAIT8.Com

Alabama outside linebacker King Mwikuta entered the NCAA transfer portal on Wednesday, a source confirmed to AL.com. On3 Sports first reported the development. Mwikuta was a four-star recruit by the Tide in 2019 who mostly appeared on special teams the past two seasons. The West Point, Georgia native did not have a clear path to playing time on defense this season after the emergence of outside linebackers Will Anderson and Christopher Allen last season. Both will return this fall, while 2020 five-star recruits Chris Braswell and Drew Sanders could also earn playing time at the position. Sophomore Quandarrius Robinson and freshman Keanu Koht round out Alabama's other options at outside linebacker. - Birmingham News

  04/17/21 - J.T. ShroutrSr/2024, Arkansas State, 6-3, 215 (DS#60 QB) + More +

Although he's played in games at the college level, JT Shrout had some catching up to do this spring when he joined the Colorado football team. As the Buffaloes crossed the mid-point of spring practice on Wednesday, however, Shrout is making a good impression. "For a newcomer, he's behind the eight ball a little bit but he's done a great job, studying, really putting in the time in the offseason to be comfortable at this point in spring ball," CU quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf said Wednesday after the Buffs' eighth practice of spring. A transfer from Tennessee, Shrout enrolled at CU in January. On Wednesday, the Division I council reportedly approved a one-time transfer exemption, making Shrout eligible to play this fall. While that was expected, it boosts the CU quarterback room to know Shrout will be available.

A 6-foot-3, 215-pound sophomore, Shrout has three seasons to play at CU. At Tennessee, he eight played in eight games, including one start, completing 37-of-69 passes for 494 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. "He's been very good," Langsdorf said. "We just ran a two-minute drill just now and he had really good command of the huddle, the signals, getting guys lined up decision making. He led us on a touchdown drive. "For a guy that's not been here very long, I'm very pleased. He's a really smart quarterback, and that's helping him. He's put in some time here in the short period and he's been very comfortable. You put somebody in a two-minute drill, you get to know a little about what their level of understanding is, and we threw a lot at him right there. He went down the field and made a nice touchdown pass. I feel really good about his progress." - Daily Camera
