Jeffcoat's 6.0 sacks rank second in the SEC and are the most by a Tiger defensive end since Charles Harris recorded 9.0 in 2016. He has produced a sack in six of Mizzou's 10 games this season, including one against Arkansas (Dec. 5), where he had a career-high five tackles. He also forced a fumble in Mizzou's win over Vanderbilt (Nov. 28). - Missouri Football

  12/22/20 - Julius CoatesrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-5, 289 (DS#999 DE) + More +

Arkansas will be down at least one defensive lineman for its bowl game against TCU on Dec. 31. Defensive end Julius Coates will not play in the Texas Bowl, Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said Monday. Pittman did not elaborate as to why the transfer from East Mississippi Community College would miss the program's first bowl game since 2016. Coates did not play in Arkansas' regular-season finale against No. 1 Alabama on Dec. 12. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported prior to that game Coates was not expected to play for reasons unrelated to an injury. He played in seven games this season and earned three starts, finishing with 18 tackles, including a season-high six against Tennessee. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  12/21/20 - JaQuinden JacksonrSr/2025, Arkansas, 6-2, 236 (DS#35 RB) + More +

The University of Utah football program signed its highest-rated recruiting class ever on Wednesday, but on Thursday, head coach Kyle Whittingham indicated he was still in the market for some more quarterback help. That help will indeed arrive in time for spring practice in March. Ja'Quinden Jackson, a transfer from the University of Texas and a former four-star recruit out of Dallas-area power Duncanville High School, committed to the Utes late Saturday evening via Twitter.

As a true freshman in 2020, Jackson did not take a snap for the Longhorns while rehabbing a knee injury suffered late in his senior season during Duncanville's run to a second straight Texas Class 6A Division I championship game. With the NCAA having frozen the eligibility clock for fall and winter athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jackson will arrive at Utah next month with true freshman eligibility. - Salt Lake Tribune

  12/11/20 - T.J. HammondsrSr/2022, Arkansas, 5-09, 185 (DS#192 WR) + More +

Arkansas' offense has enjoyed a late-season resurgence from running back T.J. Hammonds. Following what many viewed as a breakout sophomore season from the Little Rock native in 2017, Hammonds' in-game impact has since come in small doses, and not always been beneficial for the Razorbacks. That has not been the case against LSU and Missouri. "He's been showing up these past few weeks and we appreciate that," offensive lineman Myron Cunningham said Tuesday. "He works hard throughout the week and it shows come game time."

During Arkansas' loss at Missouri, Hammonds put together his best rushing performance in more than three years, finishing with 52 yards on six carries - an average of 8.7 yards per touch. It was his most rushing yards in a game since he totaled 119 and a touchdown on seven carries against Coastal Carolina in 2017. Hammonds appears to have made the most of his chances in the absence of running back Rakeem Boyd, who missed the LSU game on Nov. 21 due to being in quarantine then opted out of the final two games of the season. Trelon Smith, who backed up Boyd much of the season, has taken a starting role since his departure. But Arkansas has made an effort to get Hammonds involved both through the air and on the ground. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  12/09/20 - Feleipe FranksrSr/2021, Arkansas, 6-7, 234 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said Monday he did not have updates on the status or availability of three starters ahead of this weekend's scheduled game against No. 1 Alabama. Razorbacks quarterback Feleipe Franks, who missed Saturday's game at Missouri with a rib injury, has been working with team trainers since Arkansas returned from Columbia, Mo., but whether or not he will be able to play in the team's regular-season finale is unclear. "We haven't seen him move or throw or anything like that," Pittman said. "We'll get that opportunity today. I don't really have an update as far as his availability yet. We'll know more on that after today's practice, and tomorrow and Wednesday. "But he has done a nice job of throwing it to our guys and not the opponent. He's had a really good year and it's certainly helped him, in my opinion, toward the NFL Draft." Pittman added that if Franks is unable to practice early in the week, the staff will have "no problem at all" playing redshirt freshman KJ Jefferson against the Crimson Tide. Jefferson passed for 274 yards and accounted for four touchdowns at Missouri in his second career start. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  12/09/20 - Grant MorganrSr/2022, Arkansas, 5-11, 224 (DS#31 ILB) + More +

Who is the most valuable player on the Arkansas football team? The discussion of late has centered on Jalen Catalon, Grant Morgan or Feleipe Franks. After Missouri's incredible rally for a 50-48 victory, the answer seemed certain. With Morgan leaning on crutches with his former high school coach Rick Jones searching for consolation words, that's the man the Razorbacks can't lose. Jones, who met Morgan at midfield after the game, won eight state titles at Greenwood and now works as an analyst for Mizzou head coach Eli Drinkwitz, an Alma native.

It hurts to play without Morgan, the nation's leading tackler through the Hogs' first eight games with 104. He left at the two-minute mark of the third quarter with seven tackles. The run defense was not the same after his exit. The front seven gave way in all areas. "He's one of our best, a captain," Pittman said. "He's one of our leaders and gets us lined up. He's made a lot of tackles for us, but more than anything else, we missed his leadership." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  12/08/20 - Grant MorganrSr/2022, Arkansas, 5-11, 224 (DS#31 ILB) + More +

The Burlsworth Trophy announced 67 players nominated from Division 1 (FBS) schools from across the country for the 2020 Burlsworth Trophy. In the award's eleventh year, the Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas Walk-On and All-American offensive lineman. Burlsworth's life is also the subject of a major motion picture, "GREATER", which was released in 2016. The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding football player in American who began his career as a Walk-On and has shown outstanding performance on the field. Each nominee must have begun his first season of participation with FBS (D1) football program without financial aid of any kind from his university's athletic department. - Burlsworth Trophy

  12/09/20 - Rakeem BoydSr/2021, Arkansas, 5-11, 213 (DS#19 RB) + More +

Former Arkansas running back Rakeem Boyd was honorarily selected to the 2021 East-West Shrine Bowl on Monday. The annual all-star game will not be played as scheduled in January due to the coronavirus pandemic, but game organizers are announcing selections to recognize players who would otherwise participate in the game. Those selected to this year's roster will be eligible to participate in virtual training and informational sessions with NFL coaches and executives prior to the 2021 NFL Draft.

Boyd left the Razorbacks' football team last week with two games remaining in the season. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman characterized Boyd's decision as an opt out due to concerns over the virus. Boyd said he would use the time to prepare for next year's draft. Boyd rushed 82 times for 309 yards and three touchdowns in seven games this season. He rushed for 1,173 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  12/06/20 - Rakeem BoydSr/2021, Arkansas, 5-11, 213 (DS#19 RB) + More +

Even as he tweeted thanks to Razorbacks fans and coaches of the past Chad Morris regime and current Sam Pittman staff "for the best three years of my life," feelings echoing that old Van Winkle quote likely lurk somewhere within Rakeem Boyd. Not for his first two Arkansas years. This current one. Especially if he follows social media. As a senior captain taking the "opting out" route the NCAA made easier in these coronavirus times, Boyd by some on message boards and presumably Twitter, too, is called "quitting on his team" with two games to play. Boyd tweeted Tuesday he no longer plays for the Razorbacks and now solely prepares for the spring's NFL draft.

Blame him some do, but these are different days. They were even before covid with the transfer portal. Before bemoaning this generation of players lacking loyalty, how about so many recent years bowl teams with interim coaches because the head coach jumped ship to a better job? Or college coaches pressuring high school seniors to graduate early and enroll in January, though perhaps they pledged to play high school basketball, baseball or run track. A running back's career seems most injury risked. Boyd risked it for Arkansas likely at a lower draft cost. A nicer remembered Razorbacks legacy, of course, had he fully stayed the course. But wish Rakeem Boyd well. Simply by returning he's already taken one for the team. - Northwest Arkansas Times
