Jeff Sims threw three touchdown passes and ran for 108 yards, setting career highs, and Georgia Tech beat turnover-plagued Duke 56-33 on Saturday night as each team returned from long layoffs. Georgia Tech (3-5, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) ended a three-game losing streak. Freshman Jahmyr Gibbs had touchdown runs of 61 and 26 yards in the first half before leaving with an apparent hamstring injury. Thanks to Sims and Jordan Mason, who ran for 105 yards, Georgia Tech had 377 yards rushing even with Gibbs missing the second half. Chase Brice threw two scoring passes for Duke (2-7, 1-7), but the Blue Devils had five turnovers, including four lost fumbles. Duke committed turnovers on its first three possessions of the second half.

Georgia Tech led 28-26 at halftime before Sims threw 24-yard scoring passes to Jalen Camp and Adonicas Sanders in the third quarter. Sims had a 12-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Carter in the first quarter. Each team was returning from long layoffs caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Duke was playing for the first time since a 56-24 loss to North Carolina on Nov. 7. Georgia Tech had not played since a 31-13 loss to No. 2 Notre Dame on Oct. 31. Georgia Tech dominated the first quarter but freshman Nate McCollum fumbled while backing up near the Yellow Jackets 5 to field a punt, and Shaka Heyward recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

What has impressed Arizona State defensive line coach Robert Rodriguez most about sophomore Michael Matus isn't the work he has done on the football field, it's the focus he also has away from it. Matus, a 6-foot-2, 253-pounds from Katy, Texas, played little last year but has worked his way into the Sun Devils starting lineup at defensive end. It was a surprise with junior linebacker-turned-defensive end Tyler Johnson the one most had pegged for that starting spot. Rodriguez, who came to ASU after coaching the same position for the Minnesota Vikings, is a stickler for detail, and he isn't always the easiest coach to impress. Matus has been one athlete who has done so.

"He asks all the right questions and he is a quick study," Rodriguez said. "He'll see something in a game he watched on television and then come to me the next day and ask about it. He's always thinking and focusing on what he needs to do to get better, not just when he's on the football field. There aren't a lot of guys that think that way." Rodriguez is the school's sixth position coach in as many years, so Matus has had a lot of voices when it comes to the intricacies of the defensive line. He was recruited by previous head coach Todd Graham but opted to honor his commitment to the school despite the coaching change. As a true freshman he contributed on the scout team. Then last season he saw some time as a reserve in certain packages and on special teams. - Arizona Republic

NOV 9 PAC-12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Merlin Robertson, Jr., LB, Arizona State (Carson, Calif.),...Robertson recorded a fumble recovery and interception against No. 20 USC, and now has two interceptions in his past three games dating back to last season....He also posted 10 combined tackles, including one tackle for loss and five solo tackles...Kept USC from a potential tying or go-ahead score in the final minutes of the first half when he made a diving interception off the arm of Kedon Slovis at the ASU 10-yard line...Late in the third quarter, Robertson tackled USC RB Stephen Carr for a one-yard loss on 4th & 1 at the ASU 6...Ended another USC drive in the fourth quarter after recovering a fumble forced by teammate Evan Fields.   Merlin Robertson is back: He was the Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2018 but had a tough sophomore season, although his play did pick up in the last couple of games. With the media unable to watch practices it was tough to gauge where Robertson was heading into the season although coaches and teammates praised his off-season preparations. That showed on Saturday. A leaner, more fit Robertson had an acrobatic interception in the second quarter and stopped a USC ball call carrier on a fourth and 1 at the ASU 6, finishing with 10 tackles, the interception and a fumble recovery. - Arizona Republic

  11/09/20 - Frank DarbyrSr/2021, Arizona State, 6-0, 201 (DS#29 WR) + More +

Frank Darby needs to be a huge part of the offense: The senior was being looked at the heir to Brandon Aiyuk as the vertical, big-play threat in the passing game. When he left the game in the first half with a rib injury, it left a huge void in the ASU offense with no other receivers who had more than eight catches last year. ASU has some promising young receivers, but they're still learning. Darby's absence was particularly glaring when the Sun Devils needed to rally in the last minute after USC took a lead. - Arizona Republic

Chevan Cordeiro was 10-of-26 passing for 106 yards with one interception for Hawaii (1-1, 1-1). Dae Dae Hunter scored Hawaii's lone touchdown on a 3-yard run to pull to 10-7 in the second quarter.   Georgia Tech's offense is making big strides in its second year under coordinator Dave Patenaude. The Yellow Jackets, coming off a 46-27 win over Louisville, have gone over 400 yards of total offense in the first four games, when playing all FBS opponents, for the first time since 1999. Tech is averaging 453 yards per game, but has been slowed by 12 turnovers, though it had none against Louisville after committing five in each of the previous two games. Entering this season, head coach Geoff Collins' second at Tech, the Yellow Jackets had gone 16 straight games without eclipsing 400 yards. - AP College Football

Jeff Sims threw a go-ahead 19-yard scoring pass to Jahmyr Gibbs midway through the fourth quarter and Georgia Tech rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to beat Louisville 46-27 on Friday night. Louisville running backs lost three fumbles while Georgia Tech did not commit a turnover. Javian Hawkins ran for 155 yards for the Cardinals but his fumble in the fourth quarter was costly. Jordan Domineck's recovery near midfield set up Sims' scoring pass to Gibbs, who vaulted defensive back Isaiah Hayes at the goal line to give the Yellow Jackets a 32-27 lead.

Georgia Tech (2-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak. Sims, a freshman, passed for 249 yards with two touchdowns, including a 34-yard scoring pass to Malachi Carter to extend the lead with less than three minutes remaining. Dontae Smith added a 12-yard scoring run in the final minute. Louisville (1-3, 0-3) suffered its third straight loss despite a strong effort by quarterback Malik Cunningham, who passed for 229 yards with two touchdowns and ran for two scores. - AP College Football

In the midst of the debate about how college athletes should be compensated for use of their name, image and likeness, Baratunde Cola has a distinctly qualified voice to speak into the matter. One, the Georgia Tech mechanical-engineering professor is the institute's faculty athletics representative, charged with providing oversight to the athletic department and looking out for the well-being of its athletes. Two, he is a former college football player, having played fullback for Vanderbilt. Three, as it pertains to his proposal, he has significant experience with establishing a business and also a non-profit organization. "I'm always thinking about the student-athlete and ways that change can be enabling to the mission, and that's where I came from with this," Cola told the AJC.

His idea for the NCAA as it considers how athletes can be compensated for their name, image and likeness (NIL) is this: Athletes can create non-profit organizations that endorsement money goes into, and then they can pay themselves a portion of revenue and use the remaining funds for charity or to enhance their educations. "The message I'm trying to get across is this is something that I think the student-athletes will love," Cola said. "Frankly, I think it's something they will embrace if it's articulated to them well." A quick background on NIL: In April, the NCAA voted to support changes for athletes to be compensated by third parties (i.e., not the schools themselves) for endorsements, appearances, camps and other like opportunities. Expected to go into effect at the start of the 2021-22 academic year, it followed decades of such benefits being impermissible by NCAA rule. - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

True freshman Jeff Sims, who was once a Florida State commitment, threw for 277 yards and a touchdown as Georgia Tech defeated the Seminoles 16-13 in both teams' season opener on Saturday night. Sims completed 24 of 35 passes and had two costly interceptions but the Jacksonville, Florida, native also ran for 64 yards and helped guide Georgia Tech to the season-opening win. Jordan Mason also ran 14 times for 55 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown run.

The Seminoles used defense and special teams to stay in the game. Cornerback Asante Samuel had two interceptions and two pass break-ups for Florida State. Marvin Wilson blocked a pair of field-goal attempts, while Janarius Robinson blocked an extra-point attempt. James Blackman completed 23 of 43 passes for 198 yards but he was largely ineffective after the Seminoles scored a touchdown and a field goal on their first two drives. Blackman connected with Keyshawn Helton for a 3-yard touchdown on Florida State's opening drive. - AP College/Georgia Tech Football
