  05/04/21 - Roy LopezrSr/2021, Arizona + More +

Former Gilbert Mesquite All-Arizona center Roy Lopez III was taken by the Houston Texans with the No. 195 overall picks (sixth round) in the 2021 NFL Draft. Lopez played one season at the University of Arizona as a graduate transfer and recorded 18 tackles with four for losses in five games with the Wildcats last season at defensive tackle. He was up for Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Lopez, 6-foot-2, 318 pounds, had 137 tackles, 20 for losses, during his New Mexico State football career. He made the transition from offense to defense in college. Lopez played football for his father Roy Jr., in high school. "What Roy brings to the table for an NFL team is that he's hungry," the elder Lopez said. "He's been coached by some of the best coaches in the state. He truly flourished when I let him go with train with others." - Arizona Republic

Like many others on his team and around the country, Christian Young opted out of the 2020 football season. The veteran Arizona defender had injured his ankle during training camp. He appeared in the season opener, but the ankle wasn't getting any better. So Young went home to Houston to focus on his schoolwork and rehab his injury. "I watched the rest of the games with my Pops," Young said Saturday after the Wildcats' first full scrimmage of spring. "It was hard not being on the sideline. I was cheering my team from the couch." The time away made Young appreciate "just how much I missed football. It's just an itch. I love football...It made me realize I need to be here."

Young knew Arizona would be changing coaches after an 0-5 season capped by a 70-7 loss to rival Arizona State. He resolved to give the new staff a chance. Thus far, it has turned out to be a perfect pairing. Don Brown's defense features a position called the "Viper" that's essentially a cross between a safety and a linebacker. It's ideally suited to Young's skill set. "We just really liked his athleticism," said Keith Dudzinski, who coaches the Vipers and "Sam" linebackers. "The thing we didn't know is how physical he would be up at the line of scrimmage. He's shown he's definitely physical. He's covered tight ends. He's made a lot of plays in spring. So I'm real happy with what he's done so far." - Arizona Star News

Jack Buford, a 6-foot-5, 320-pound offensive lineman who last played for the University of Missouri, said he is transferring to the University of New Mexico in a tweet on Twitter on Thursday. Buford, who was rated a four-star recruit by ESPN and 247Sports out of Lutheran North High School in St. Louis, redshirted his freshman season at Mizzou in 2019. He opted out for the year early in the 2020 season, but changed his mind and rejoined the team later in the season. He appeared in the Tigers' game against Vanderbilt as a guard. He announced he entered the transfer portal in February.

Buford joins UNM wide receiver Cjay Boone, who has already enrolled at UNM, as another Missouri player who has transferred to the Lobos. After UNM's Cherry & Silver Game on Saturday, coach Danny Gonzales said the Lobos were pursuing a transfer offensive lineman to help provide depth. He cannot comment specifically on Buford until Buford enrolls at New Mexico. Buford could fill the role Gonzales described and more. Out of high school, he chose Mizzou over Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Oklahoma and Kentucky among more than 30 offers, according to his bio on Missouri's atheltic website. - Albuquerque Journal

Seven players who hadn't previously been reported as transferring or no longer with the program are not on the roster for spring ball, which begins Tuesday afternoon. The players who no longer are on the team include tailback Nathan Tilford, cornerback Bobby Wolfe and defensive tackle Myles Tapusoa. The others: receiver Tre Adams; linebackers Derrion Clark and Kwabena Watson; and defensive lineman Jalen Cochran. Tilford came to Arizona as a four-star prospect. He averaged 6.8 yards per rush and scored six touchdowns but never carried more than 37 times in a season. For his career, Tilford rushed for 363 yards on 53 attempts in four years. Wolfe was a highly regarded three-star prospect who appeared in four games as a freshman in 2019, making six tackles. He did not appear in a game last year and opted out during the season. - Arizona Star News

Washington State starting quarterback Jayden de Laura has been suspended from the team after his arrest in Pullman on suspicion of driving under the influence. The freshman started all four games for Washington State last fall. The Spokesman-Review reports that the 19-year-old de Laura was arrested on a misdemeanor DUI charge early Saturday. According to police, de Laura was pulled over at 2:13 a.m. after driving through a stop sign and subsequently driving the wrong way.   Hayward was the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, when he recorded 142 tackles, including 10.5 for losses. Coach says: "He's just a tackling machine. He's all over the field. He has pass-rush ability. He will strike you...He's a guy that can run. He's a smart guy. He also has tremendous leadership skills. I've enjoyed getting to know him over the last bit of time here. I think people here in Tucson are going to be really excited about the way he plays...The guy's played in big games. He understands how to play in the spotlight." - defensive coordinator Don Brown - Arizona Star News

Running back Gary Brightwell is the second Arizona Wildcats draft prospect to receive an invitation to the NFL scouting combine. Although the combine will not be conducted in a traditional manner this year - all testing will be done at campus pro days as opposed to a single gathering in Indianapolis because of the coronavirus pandemic - it's a positive development for Brightwell's draft prospects. The NFL typically invites about 330 players to the combine. Receiving an invite doesn't guarantee a player will be drafted, but it's an indication that the league sees the player as draftable. Former UA cornerback Lorenzo Burns also has received a combine invite. - Arizona Star News

In what might be a sign of how he's viewed by professional teams, Arizona cornerback Lorenzo Burns has been invited to this year's scaled-down NFL Draft combine. Burns' father, DeChon, told the Star of his son's involvement. The combine is traditionally held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, but has been changed as players and teams deal with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Players will take part in standardized combine drills at their own college's pro days, with scouts from NFL teams watching remotely. - Arizona Star News

With a crowded backfield and limited opportunities for a traditional fullback in Nick Rolovich's run-and-shoot offense, former walk-on and fan favorite Clay Markoff confirmed to The Spokesman-Review he plans to spend his final year of eligibility somewhere other than Pullman. The NCAA Transfer Portal Twitter account first reported Markoff's plans to enter the portal Wednesday morning and he wrote a parting message to WSU Thursday afternoon. Although Markoff came to the Cougars as a fullback, he converted to running back during Mike Leach's final season in Pullman and stayed in that role under Rolovich last season. Markoff, who was placed on scholarship by Leach's staff in 2019, was primed for a bigger role as a redshirt junior but had his season derailed by an injury. - Spokesman-Review

Gunner Cruz has taken his last snaps in a Washington State uniform, but the Cougars will probably cross paths with the quarterback at some point in the next few years. One day after it was learned Cruz entered the NCAA transfer portal, the big-armed redshirt freshman from Queen Creek, Arizona, announced on Twitter he'll be transferring within the Pac-12 Conference to the University of Arizona. Cruz and fellow underclassman Cammon Cooper lost out on a position battle to true freshman Jayden de Laura in fall camp and Cruz got his only snaps of the season in the fourth quarter of a blowout loss at USC. - Spokesman-Review

Arizona defensive tackle Mykee Irving has put his name in the NCAA transfer portal. Irving (6-3, 320) was a redshirt sophomore in 2020. He appeared in 11 games in three seasons with the Wildcats, accumulating five tackles. Irving was a three-star prospect in the class of 2018 out of Calabasas, California. He has graduated, so he'll be immediately eligible at another school, no matter the NCAA's decision about one-time transfers. - Arizona Star News

Yet another Arizona wide receiver has run a reverse. Stanley Berryhill III, the Wildcats' leading pass catcher in 2020, announced Tuesday that he's returning to the UA. Berryhill took it a step further than the others, committing to Ball State last month before changing his mind. "The timing of the whole situation wasn't right," Berryhill told KVOA in an interview that aired Monday night. As a redshirt junior last season, Berryhill led the Wildcats with 23 catches for 227 yards and three touchdowns in five games. For his career, Berryhill has 56 catches for 733 yards and eight scores in 20 contests. - Arizona Star News
