How will Don Brown's system bring out the best in defensive ends Harris and JB Brown? "Dr. Blitz" isn't just a nickname for Don Brown. It's a way of life. His scheme is based on bringing pressure. It could come from anywhere. But when you look at the leading sackers from Brown's time at Michigan, the production mainly came from expected spots. Among the players who ranked first or second in sacks in Brown's five seasons with the Wolverines, only one) wasn't a defensive lineman or strongside linebacker (defensive back Khaleke Hudson, in 2017). The names that popped up most frequently: Kwity Paye (DE), Josh Uche (SLB) and Chase Winovich (DE). Each ranked in the top two (including ties) twice over that span.

There are two logical explanations for this: (1) Edge rushers are put in that position for a reason; and (2) by sending blitzers from all angles, it creates openings and one-on-one matchups for those edge rushers. In short: Brown's system will benefit Harris and JB Brown. Harris primarily played as an outside linebacker in a conservative 3-4 scheme last season under Paul Rhoads. Harris played a lot better than his lack of sacks would suggest. Harris had 18 tackles in four games. That projects to 54 in 12 games, which would have doubled his career high. - Arizona Star News

Linebacker Treshaun Hayward will be part of the Arizona football team after all, the Star has learned. Hayward - a transfer from Western Michigan, where he was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 - signed with the Wildcats in February. The two parties subsequently parted ways for undisclosed reasons. Hayward is now back in the mix and is expected to participate in training camp, which begins Friday. His return gives Arizona another experienced option in a rebuilt linebacking corps. The UA has added five linebackers via the NCAA transfer portal. Hayward accumulated 229 tackles, including 16 stops for losses, in 39 games at WMU. - Arizona Star News

Linebacker Treshaun Hayward will not be part of the of the Arizona Wildcats football program, the Star has confirmed. Hayward, a graduate transfer from Western Michigan, had signed with Arizona in February. However, the UA recently decided to part ways with Hayward.   Mohamed Diallo has entered the ranks of professional football. Diallo was drafted 19th overall in the third round by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL Draft Tuesday. He was one of two Mid-American Conference players selected, the other being Eastern Michigan kicker/punter Julien Lake. In two seasons with the Chippewas, Diallo made 26 total tackles. After missing the first half of the 2019 season while awaiting an immediate eligibility waiver, Diallo played the final five games of the season. He broke out in the shortened 2020 season, producing 9.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Diallo was forced to move from the defensive interior to defensive end when an injury to starter LaQuan Johnson created a lack of depth at the position. - Central Michigan Life

  05/06/21 - Malik ReedrJr/2025, Arizona + More +

The Arizona Wildcats first recruited Malik Reed years ago, when the Chandler High School standout was listed among the top linebackers in the state. Wisconsin won that recruiting battle. Tuesday, Arizona hit back. Reed tweeted that he would be transferring to the UA after spending one season with the Badgers. A 6-foot inside linebacker who entered the transfer portal on Friday, Reed should be able to compete for playing time right away on Wildcats defense that's looking for an infusion of talent. Reed was one of Chandler's defensive stars as a senior, registering 92 tackles and 13 tackles-for-loss. His performance came one year after he put up 42 tackles and an eye-popping 20.5 TFLs and 8 1/2 sacks. - Arizona Star News

Another Auburn defender appears to be considering other options. According to AL.com's Matt Zenitz, Auburn safety Chris Thompson Jr. has entered the transfer portal. The rising sophomore becomes the fourth Tigers player and third defender to enter the portal since last Friday. The 6-foot-2, 206-pound Thompson signed with Auburn as a four-star in the class of 2020. He made his first appearance in the Tigers' second contest of 2020 against Georgia and ultimately appeared in six games. He recorded eight tackles, three of which came in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl against Northwestern. Thompson was seen as a starting safety candidate this spring after Jamien Sherwood departed for the NFL. He ultimately spent most of the spring with the second-team while former nickelback Ladarius Tennison manned the other safety position opposite rising senior safety Smoke Monday. - Opelika-Auburn News

Connecting the dots from offensive lineman Jack Buford to University of New Mexico wide receiver Cjay Boone is natural in regard to Buford recently landing as a transfer to play for the Lobos. Buford and Boone grew up in St. Louis and played at the University of Missouri. But what tipped the scale to UNM for Buford's decision was the Lobos' new quarterback, Terry Wilson, who recently transferred in from Kentucky. "I was talking to Cjay, but as soon as they told me about Terry I was like OK. I hit Terry up," said Buford, a highly recruited offensive lineman out of Lutheran High School in 2019. "Me and Terry have been talking for about a month. We were supposed to link up in (California) but I left a day early and missed him. Me and Terry have been chopping it up almost all the time. That's my guy. That's my quarterback." - Albuquerque Journal
