Zac Thomas threw for three touchdowns, Daetrich Harrington ran for 113 yards and Appalachian State pulled away from Texas State for a 38-17 win on Saturday. It's the seventh straight season in which Appalachian State has put together a four-game win streak. Tyler Vitt put the Bobcats on the scoreboard first when he threw a 75-yard touchdown catch-and-run to Javen Banks just 44 seconds into the game. The Mountaineers (5-1, 3-0 Sun Belt Conference) responded with a seven-play, 72-yard scoring drive that ended with Thomas throwing a 32-yard touchdown pass to Miller Gibbs. With 64 seconds left before the end of the first quarter, Brendan Harrington picked off Vitt, returned it 49 yards for the score and App State never trailed again. Vitt threw for a pair of touchdowns but was intercepted twice. Jahmyl Jeter had 135 yards rushing on 11 carries for Texas State (1-8, 1-4). - AP College Football

OCT 26 SUN BELT CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Zac Thomas, App State,...Zac Thomas accounted for a career high-tying five touchdowns in leading the Mountaineers to a 45-17 Sun Belt-opening win against Arkansas State. He completed 16 of 23 passes for 216 yards and a career high-tying four touchdowns, while rushing for a career-high 82 yards and another score on the ground. With top receiver Thomas Hennigan limited and another starter, Jalen Virgil, out due to injury, Thomas spread the ball around to seven different receivers.

Up 31-17 late in the third quarter and facing a third-and-14 scenario that would put the Red Wolves in position to get the ball back, Thomas sprinted up the middle for a big gain, made a hard right cut and stayed in bounds along the sideline before making a Superman-style dive into the front-right pylon for a 60-yard score to put App State ahead by 21 again. Thomas won his 26th game in 30 tries as App State's starting QB. His 26 wins rank No. 2 among active FBS quarterbacks. - Sun Belt Football

Junior running back Jahmir Smith has left the team, Kelly said. "He's decided that he's not going to play football," Kelly said. "We'll have some further conversations about what his plans are moving forward. But he's decided at this time that he is not going to be playing football." The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Smith hadn't played in a game since the season opener against Duke in which he recorded five carries for 15 yards. Smith came to the Irish as a three-star running back out of Sanford (N.C.) Lee County in the 2018 class. He played in 10 games last season and rushed 42 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns. - South Bend Tribune

Zac Thomas tied a career high with four passing touchdowns and he added a 60-yard rushing score to lead Appalachian State past Arkansas State 45-17 on Thursday night. Appalachian State scored 24 unanswered points in the first half to take a 31-7 lead at halftime. Thomas connected with freshman Christian Wells for a 46-yard score and Daetrich Harrington rushed for a 55-yard TD. Thomas also had passing touchdowns of 5, 16, and 20 yards. Thomas' TD run was two yards short of tying the longest run of his career, set in 2018 against Arkansas State.

Harrington carried it 18 times for 137 yards and a touchdown for Appalachian State (3-1, 1-0 Sun Belt Conference). Malik Williams made six catches for 78 yards and a TD, and Wells scored on both of his receptions. Appalachian State's defense had two interceptions and six sacks. Logan Bonner was 13-of-25 passing for 117 yards and Layne Hatcher added 178 yards on nine completions for Arkansas State (3-3, 1-2). Freshman Lincoln Pare rushed for a 48-yard touchdown to pull the Red Wolves to 31-17 with 2:08 remaining in the third quarter. - AP College Football

Duke coach David Cutcliffe said after the game that he liked the "fight" of his team and at every position Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium. Quarterback Chase Brice was "fierce" in the way he played, Cutcliffe said, shouldering the blame for a couple of Brice's three interceptions. Turnovers have been a season-long malady for Duke. The Blue Devils had 19 before the game, more than any other FBS team, and added to that troubling total. The Pack's second TD came on a blocked punt late in the first half. Third downs were a problem - Duke was 4 of 16 on conversions while the Pack was 7 of 15. - Herald Sun

Brice threw interceptions No. 9, 10 and 11 of the season, the first a bad decision to throw over the middle at the goal line, the second when he was hit while throwing, the third deeper over the middle with Duke down a score in the fourth quarter. Still a heavy emphasis on the tight ends, with the receivers mostly forgotten again. Jake Bobo did have a nice sequence, dodging tackles on a short touchdown to make it 17-7 after a leaping catch on the sideline. - Herald Sun

There's work to be done for quarterback Chase Brice, but this uneven performance at least shows there's a high upside. Brice started 5-for-5 with a 26-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive, and then threw eight straight incompletions and was benched after his fumble was returned for a touchdown. Gunnar Holmberg replaced him for a possession and also fumbled. Brice seemed to find his rhythm afterward, throwing for a 52-yard touchdown at the end of the first half. A second-half interception thrown between four Orange defenders was another blemish, but overall Brice threw for 270 yards and two scores. - Herald Sun

Chase Brice threw for two touchdowns, Mataeo Durant rushed for 163 yards and two more scores, and Deon Jackson rushed for a career-high 169 yards and Duke finally won a game, holding off Syracuse 38-24 on Saturday. Duke (1-4, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) won despite three lost fumbles and an interception, but Syracuse (1-3, 1-3) only turned them into seven points. The Blue Devils entered the game with 15 turnovers, the most in the nation, while Syracuse was second nationally in turnovers gained with 10. On this day, it finally didn't matter for the Blue Devils, who used the backfield tandem of Jackson and Durant to wreak considerable havoc while the Syracuse offense sputtered. Quarterback Tommy DeVito never found any sort of rhythm, misfiring repeatedly on long throws, and failed to capitalize on any of the turnovers. He finished 13-of-26 passing for 255 yards and two touchdowns. He was injured when sacked early in the fourth quarter for the fifth time and replaced by Rex Culpepper. Duke came from behind with two touchdowns late in the second quarter to gain a 14-point halftime lead. - AP College Football

Brice had his best college moment against Syracuse - with Clemson. With the Tigers trailing the Orange 23-20 late in the fourth quarter in the 2018 game at Clemson, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence out of the game, Brice led the Tigers 94 yards for the winning score. What the transfer wants now is to get Duke a winning score. College football has become a sport of constant movement and change. Herbert is a graduate transfer. Braxton Burmeister, the Hokies' starting quarterback Saturday, transferred from Oregon and running back Raheem Blackshear from Rutgers. So it goes.

Brice, who played two years as Lawrence's backup at Clemson, finally found a comfort level Saturday in the second half - Duke had only 91 yards in total offense in the opening half. He connected on some down-the-field throws and found senior tight end Noah Gray, the old reliable, for another TD pass. "This is our fifth real live competition, with one live scrimmage," Brice said. "Later on now we're beginning to click a little better. I'm understanding my personnel and feeling more confident in the system and play-calling." - Herald Sun

SEPT 28 SUN BELT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Daetrich Harrington, App State,...Taking over primary ball-carrying duties with several teammates inactive, Daetrich Harrington made the most of his opportunity with career highs in rushing yards (211), attempts (32), touchdowns (4) and longest rush (40) to lead App State to a 52-21 win against Campbell. He's the first Sun Belt player this year with a 200-yard game and the first with a four-touchdown effort. His four rushing touchdowns were the most in a game by an App State player since legendary QB Armanti Edwards in 2009. Harrington's first two scores were at key first-half moments, tying the game at 7-7 in the first quarter and then giving the Mountaineers their first lead of the game at 17-13 in the second. - Sun Belt Football

Daetrich Harrington rushed for career highs of 211 yards and four touchdowns and depleted Appalachian State beat Campbell 52-21 on Saturday. On Friday, Appalachian State (2-1) announced that three players had been confirmed with COVID-19 and, as a result, 18 other players were quarantining after contract tracing. Campbell (0-3), one of 17 FCS schools playing fall games, grabbed the lead for most of the first half before Harrington's second touchdown, a 2-yard run with 24 seconds left before the break, gave the Mountaineers a 17-13 lead. Those points came on the third of eight straight scoring drives. Harrington, a junior, already had 107 yards rushing by halftime with two scores. His four TDs were the most for the Mountaineers since Armanti Edwards had four against Furman in 2009. Nate Noel finished with 131 yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut. The Mountaineers rushed for 404 of their 535 yards offense. - AP College Football

The season still has a long way to go, but Saturday was a good start. Peoples was one of three running backs featured in the 35-20 victory against Charlotte. But from the moment he touched the ball, on the Mountaineers' third offensive series, his carries were electric. He scored his touchdown and had five carries on the drive - three that were 10 yards or longer. He was the first running back to break the order, his number called again for the next series. He'd get two carries and get dinged up, heading to the locker room. He returned for more action in the second half. "I guess I'm the hot hand," Peoples remembered before cracking a joke. "...I was like wow hold up now, I gotta catch my breath."

App State coach Shawn Clark said during his weekly press conference that Peoples would continue to be evaluated throughout the week. While Peoples spoke on Monday, an unexpected figure crashed his interview. Nic Cardwell, App State's offensive line coach, busted in to shout a few sentences. "He's thinking he's going to take it to the house," Cardwell shouted. "He's going all the way, as soon as he touches the rock, baby." And as Peoples reflected on his path from Lineville, Ala., to Boone, he hopes that will be the first of many more touchdowns. "I feel like I've always been kind of overlooked, and I feel like a lot of guys here can relate to that, which I think that's what makes this team so special," Peoples said. "It's that we all play with a chip on our shoulder. We all play like we got something to prove." - Winston-Salem Journal

If there were questions about Duke quarterback Chase Brice, most were answered against Notre Dame in Cutcliffe's opinion. Brice, in his first college start, handled his nerves and the team well enough, giving the Clemson transfer something to build off of from the game. "I thought Chase played really well under difficult circumstances against a really good team and a challenging front," Cutcliffe said. "He made some great throws. If we had run the ball better it might have opened up some things for us."

The final rushing stats for Duke were anemic: 75 yards on 30 attempts, a 2.5-yard average. But Cutcliffe, after reviewing the game, didn't find it that discomforting, given the opponent. "I think part of it, we missed some opportunities out there, left some yards on the field, particularly in our draw game, our counter game," he said. "I thought we ran the stretch pretty well. But I really think we left some yards on the field where if we finish blocks or see holes. A big part of that is we've had very little live running the football." - Herald Sun
