DeWayne McBride doesn't have the same reaction to his nickname as everyone else. The petrifying villain from the 1995 film Friday usually comes to mind when hearing the name Debo, but for McBride, it's a nickname he shares with his father, DeWayne McBride Sr. Despite the contrasting origins, the younger McBride embodies the intimidating and daunting air of Tommy Lister Jr.'s movie character in his bruising and elegant running style for the UAB football team. The Blazers have hit the midway point of fall camp, two weeks from the season opener against Jacksonville State at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, and McBride is prepared to lead UAB's vaunted rushing attack into the 2021 season following the departure of the program's all-time leading rusher. "Obviously, if you watched him last year, you saw how explosive he was and how he finishes runs," UAB head coach Bill Clark said. "High expectations for him and that's what we've heard this whole offseason. He's got high expectations for himself. I think he's been working really hard on pass protection and catching the ball out of the backfield."

Moving on from Spencer Brown was never going to be easy but Jermaine Brown Jr. was able to provide a glimpse in 2019 and McBride staked his claim for a high-usage role last season. While not on the field the first two games against Central Arkansas and Miami, McBride worked his way into the primary rotation quickly -- playing six of the final seven games -- with the aid of the elder Brown himself. "When I got here, he was a leader to me," McBride said. "I didn't know the plays and he helped me by staying on me every day and trying to get me right. He was a good leader." - Birmingham Post Herald

Purdue originally had 11 transfers committed but defensive end Marcus Cushnie (Alabama A&M) bolted for Florida State and safety C.J. McWilliams (Florida) sustained an eye injury and won't be attending Purdue. The rest of the transfers are kicker Mitchell Fineran (Samford), receiver Broc Thompson (Marshall), defensive back Jamari Brown (Kentucky), safety Christopher Jefferson (Findlay, Ohio), defensive tackle Damarjhe Lewis (Indiana), defensive tackle Prince Boyd (Independence Community College). "All of them are going to be given an opportunity to play and showcase their ability and we brought them in here for a reason," Brohm said. "We evaluated them from the day they got here and that will continue during camp. If they can help us, they're going to be playing." Witt is a projected starter at right guard and Fineran has the inside track to become the No. 1 kicker if he performs well in training camp. Lewis and Boyd will see more of an opportunity after veteran Anthony Watts suffered a broken foot this summer and it's unclear if he'll be available this season.

Thompson will challenge the current outside receivers for playing time, Brown and Jefferson will add depth to a thin secondary, Brothers ranks among the top four linebackers after spring practice and Anderson gives the defense another edge rusher. "O.C. Brothers definitely stood out in the spring, making plays and being able to run and having instincts and being aggressive in his approach," Brohm said. "Joe Anderson can be a really good player for us. Tyler Witt jumped in right off the bat and has contributed and done well. Broc Thompson can be a productive player for us. - Journal and Courier

The UAB football program got halfway through spring practice last year before the world came to a screeching halt. No spring game. No closure. Despite the cancellation of UAB's final two games at the Old Gray Lady last season, the Blazers get an opportunity to close out their former home before moving into Protective Stadium. The Blazers are set to conclude spring practice with their annual spring game, Saturday, April 10, at Legion Field in Birmingham, the program announced today after opening spring practice yesterday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The Blazers are coming off a third straight division title and second Conference USA championship, as well as its fifth straight bowl-eligible season under head coach Bill Clark. - Birmingham Post Herald

Former Auburn linebacker O.C. Brothers is headed to the Big Ten. Brothers, who entered the transfer portal Dec. 8, announced Thursday that he has committed to Purdue.
