Jermaine Brown Jr. ran for three touchdowns, Dylan Hopkins added two TD passes and UAB beat UTEP 42-25 on Friday in the regular-season finale for both teams. UAB (8-4, 6-2 Conference USA) and UTEP (7-5, 4-4) await bowl invitations. Hopkins completed 15 of 20 for 108 yards and threw one interception. Brown finished with 16 carries for 88 yards and DeWayne McBride 99 yards rushing on just seven carries. He bounced off a would-be tackler and then plowed through two more to reach the goal line on a 17-yard run that opened the scoring with 4:50 left in the first quarter and ripped off a 67-yard scamper to the 4 that set up the first of Brown's TDs - a 1-yarder on fourth-and-goal that made it 14-all with 9:15 left in the second quarter. McBride appeared to have injured his ankle and was later seen on the sideline wearing a walking boot.

The Miners lost 10 yards as they went three-and-out and the punt, which was partially blocked, went just 25 yards. Four plays later, Brown capped a 40-yard drive with and 1-yard touchdown run with 8:41 left in the third quarter. UTEP fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Hopkins threw a 4-yard TD pass to Hayden Pittman that made it 28-17 about 2 minutes later. Quardraiz Wadley scored on a 7-yard run late in the first quarter and Deion Hankins ran for an 11-yard TD early in the second. Gavin Baechle's 23-yard field goal with 5 seconds left made it 17-14 at halftime. UAB, which shut down its program following the 2014 season, has won at least eight games four of the five seasons since re-instating football prior to the 2017 campaign. The Blazers went 6-3 and won the Conference USA Championship in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. - UAB/AP College Football

DeWayne McBride rushed for 108 yards with two touchdowns and Grayson Cash's interception on Marshall's final drive sealed a 21-14 win for UAB on Saturday. The Blazers (7-3, 5-1 Conference USA) held Mercer's potent offense to 269 yards and to 22 points under its season average. The Thundering Herd (6-3, 4-1) had entered the game with the nation's eighth-best offense at 474.3 yards per game. CD Daniels led the UAB defense with seven tackles with Cash, Dy'Jonn Turner, Noah Wilder and Antonio Moultrie each adding six.

McBride scored on first-quarter touchdown runs of 3 and 15 yards as he picked up his fourth 10-yard rushing game of the season. Dylan Hopkins, who threw for 250 yards, scored the game-winner on a keeper from the 1-yard line with 36 seconds left in the third quarter. Grant Wells passed for 232 yards and both Marshall touchdowns as the Herd rallied to a 14-14 tie. Wells had moved Marshall to midfield when his third-down pass was intercepted by Cash, allowing UAB to run out the final 91 seconds. - UAB/AP College Football

DeWayne McBride doesn't have the same reaction to his nickname as everyone else. The petrifying villain from the 1995 film Friday usually comes to mind when hearing the name Debo, but for McBride, it's a nickname he shares with his father, DeWayne McBride Sr. Despite the contrasting origins, the younger McBride embodies the intimidating and daunting air of Tommy Lister Jr.'s movie character in his bruising and elegant running style for the UAB football team. The Blazers have hit the midway point of fall camp, two weeks from the season opener against Jacksonville State at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, and McBride is prepared to lead UAB's vaunted rushing attack into the 2021 season following the departure of the program's all-time leading rusher. "Obviously, if you watched him last year, you saw how explosive he was and how he finishes runs," UAB head coach Bill Clark said. "High expectations for him and that's what we've heard this whole offseason. He's got high expectations for himself. I think he's been working really hard on pass protection and catching the ball out of the backfield."

Moving on from Spencer Brown was never going to be easy but Jermaine Brown Jr. was able to provide a glimpse in 2019 and McBride staked his claim for a high-usage role last season. While not on the field the first two games against Central Arkansas and Miami, McBride worked his way into the primary rotation quickly -- playing six of the final seven games -- with the aid of the elder Brown himself. "When I got here, he was a leader to me," McBride said. "I didn't know the plays and he helped me by staying on me every day and trying to get me right. He was a good leader." - Birmingham Post Herald
