  09/04/21 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Bryce Young didn't take long to prove he's the man to lead No. 1 Alabama in its quest for another national title. Young became the first Crimson Tide quarterback to throw four touchdown passes in his starting debut and the defending champions romped past No. 14 Miami 44-13 in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Saturday. After sending another batch of stars off to the NFL, it looks like Nick Saban's team simply reloaded for another run at the title.

Young, a sophomore from Southern California, completed 27 of 38 passes for 344 yards - a performance that even managed to please his demanding coach. "I thought Bryce did really, really well," Saban said. "The poise he played with, the command he had. He kind of took what the defense gave him and really directed the offense in a positive way." Young opened with a 37-yard touchdown pass to John Metchie, hooked up with tight end Cameron Latu on a pair of scoring plays and buried the Hurricanes with a 94-yard TD strike to Jameson Williams early in the third quarter. "He did a great job of getting the ball to the right guy at the right time in the right place," Saban said of Young. Before Young, Mac Jones and Joe Namath had been the only quarterbacks to throw three TD passes in their first starts for Alabama. "There was a lot of anticipation," Young said. "It was definitely fun to be out there with my guys." - Alabama/AP College Football

  09/02/21 - LaBryan RayrSr/2022, Alabama, 6-4, 287 (DS#28 DT) + More +

Alabama football seems to be getting more and more healthy as the season arrives. During the SEC teleconference Wednesday, coach Nick Saban said defensive lineman LaBryan Ray and offensive tackle Kendall Randolph will be available for the game Saturday against Miami. "Both guys have been battling some injuries," Saban said. "I think both will be ready to play in the game. We're very encouraged how they were doing, how they've been doing and the progress that they're making." The news on Ray is especially significant, considering Saban said at the beginning of preseason practices that Ray was dealing with a significant groin injury that happened toward the end of the summer. - Montgomery Advertiser

Bryce Young has never started a college football game, and he's attempted just 22 passes in his career. Yet, Alabama's starting quarterback is listed among the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. Young and Clemson's DJ Uiagalelei, a fellow first-year starting quarterback, each have 11-to-1 odds by BetMGM to win the Heisman. Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler is the Heisman favorite, with 6.5-to-1 odds. Young's place among the Heisman favorites makes sense when you figure he's the starting quarterback for the team favored to win the national championship. But if recent history is a guide, the Heisman winner won't be listed among the preseason favorites. - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama sophomore outside linebacker Quandarrius Robinson has been suspended indefinitely as he faces a DUI charge. Robinson was involved in a three-car collision in Tuscaloosa late Saturday night. Nobody was injured but Robinson was taken to jail, police said. "He'll get evaluation and also go through the protocols that we have for any alcohol or drug-related issue," coach Nick Saban said Monday. A Jackson-Olin High School product, Robinson was the No. 65 overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting class but didn't appear in a game as a freshman last season. Robinson was not listed on the two-deep depth chart released Monday. - Birmingham News

  08/28/21 - Nikhai Hill-GreenrSr/2026, Alabama, 6-1, 235 (DS#22 ILB) + More +

Redshirt freshman Nikhai Hill-Green has earned the second starting inside linebacker role at Michigan, edging out the returning Mike Barrett, assistant coach George Helow said Thursday. "He's had a really good offseason," Helow, assigned to coach the linebackers, told reporters outside Schembechler Hall. "Nikhai had a plan this offseason: He really got after it in the weight room (and) changed his body. Had a great camp. He's our starting WILL linebacker right now." The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Pittsburgh, Pa., native has impressed the coaching staff this offseason with his knack for picking things up quickly and applying them on the field.

Michigan is expected to debut a new-look defensive scheme against Western Michigan on Sept. 4, and Hill-Green will line up next to Ross as the Wolverines' two inside linebackers in a 3-4 scheme that will feature big-bodied ends as outside linebackers. "He's earned the right to start," Helow continued. "Does everything you ask him to do. He's very coachable. He's playing with his hands, down hill and has a good understanding of the defense and what we're trying to do." Helow went on to describe Hill-Green - who played in three games last fall as a true freshman, all on special teams - as an avid notetaker in meetings and eager to learn. "I really just put my all into this team," Hill-Green told reporters last week. "I really just bet on myself. I put everything into my nutrition, my film study - and just being all-in to this team." - Ann Arbor News

  08/27/21 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

There's no shortage of buzz around Alabama football quarterback Bryce Young, and coach Nick Saban is among those whom he has impressed. While speaking with reporters Wednesday after practice, Saban said he is really pleased with Young. "Bryce has a really good knowledge of the offense," Saban said. "He's a really bright guy. He makes good choices and decisions. He has a really good feel in the pocket. And he's played really, really well." Saban said they want to continue developing timing in the passing game with the new receivers to prompt more accuracy, but the coach noted that's on both the passer and the route-runner. "I've been pleased with his performance," Saban said. "We've just got to get the people around him to play a little better on a more consistent basis." - Montgomery Advertiser

  08/26/21 - *Will Anderson Jr.Jr/2023, Alabama, 6-4, 253 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Ohio State has Chase Young and the Bosa brothers. Texas A&M has Myles Garrett. South Carolina has Jadeveon Clowney. When it comes to game-wrecking edge rushers whose talents were so obvious that they did not last more than a few picks in the NFL draft, recent history puts Alabama a step behind some of its peers in college football. Nick Saban's 14 seasons as Alabama's coach have produced a first-round pick the following spring at every non-specialist position except edge rusher. The last time any Crimson Tide edge rusher was drafted in the first round was in 1993, when John Copeland and Eric Curry were chosen consecutive with the Nos. 5 and 6 overall picks, respectively.

Is Will Anderson the player who will end that drought? At the very least, the Alabama outside linebacker's freshman season put him in that conversation. He started immediately and finished third in the SEC with seven sacks. The FWAA named Anderson its freshman of the year and he was a second-team All-SEC pick by the Associated Press. The expectations have only risen this fall. He is a preseason first-team All-America selection by the Associated Press, two of the organizations whose postseason honors are recognized by the NCAA. The media made Anderson a first-team preseason All-SEC pick, and he is on the watch list for the Walter Camp player of the year award. - Birmingham News

From Henry Ruggs to Jaylen Waddle, Alabama's high-powered passing game of the past few years had track speed at wideout. They demanded respect from opposing defenses who always ran the threat of someone getting behind the safeties, and when that happened, touchdown. Both Ruggs and Waddle were first-round picks in each of the last two NFL drafts so Nick Saban found someone with high-end speed in the transfer portal. Jameson Williams was leaving Ohio State after two seasons and just days after announcing that departure, he had committed to Alabama. And he's quick. Coming out of high school in St. Louis, his personal record in the 100 meters (10.54 seconds) was right there in the range of Ruggs' high school best of 10.53 seconds. Williams' was also a three-time state champion in the 300 hurdles with a state-record time that broke the previous mark set by Dallas Cowboy Ezekiel Elliott.

Saban noted that speed Wednesday evening but he explained his addition had benefits beyond that. "You can tell he's an experienced player," Saban said. "He's played at a high level against good competition. And he's very bright. So he's picked up on things and learned the offense very quickly. So we're encouraged with what he's done, and I'm sure he's going to make a really positive contribution to our team." Saban also went as far to say Williams would be a "featured guy in some ways." - Birmingham News

  08/24/21 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young didn't have to think long before he named his favorite quarterbacks to study: Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers and the Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson. "For me as far as NFL quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers is someone I definitely look up to on the field and someone I like to take pieces of their game and study and try to implement into my game, as well as Russell Wilson, who also does a lot of really good stuff," Young said.

It makes sense considering that Rodgers and Wilson have been mobile quarterbacks who can make plays with their legs and arms. The same can be said about Young, who was the nation's top dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 class. Young said he could list more quarterbacks whom he studies, but in the interest of time, he kept it to two. "A lot of quarterbacks are doing a great job right now, and I am trying to emulate and get on that level," Young said. - Montgomery Advertiser

  08/23/21 - Chris BraswellSr/2024, Alabama, 6-3, 259 (DS#4 OLB) + More +

A new era of college player merchandise has arrived. With athletes allowed to capitalize off their name, image and likeness starting this summer, you can now purchase a jersey T-shirt with Alabama football linebacker Chris Braswell's name and number on it. What's most significant about it - The script 'A' on the front of the shirt. NIL deals have been flying since they became allowed in July, but few have included the school's branding. That is starting to change.

The sophomore is the first known Alabama player to strike a deal that involves UA and a third party. BreakingT has began selling these Braswell T-shirts with the Alabama logo on them, which look similar to jersey T-shirts. On the BreakingT site, the description underneath the shirt reads: "officially licensed by the University of Alabama and Chris Braswell." Each party receives a cut of the T-shirts, running for $38 (adults) and $34 (youth). - Montgomery Advertiser

Almost seven weeks since college athletes could beginning earning revenue from their names, Images and likenesses, a group of the Tide's top football players has signed with the same agency to represent them. Wide receiver John Metchie, running back Brian Robinson, cornerback Josh Jobe and safety Jordan Battle all joined GSE Worldwide, the firm announced Monday evening. The group also handles marketing deals for former Alabama stars Jaylen Waddle and Irv Smith, Jr. Under relaxed NCAA rules, college athletes are allowed to sign with agencies to represent them as long as those agencies do not begin to negotiate professional playing contracts. - Birmingham News

Ever since college athletes were able to earn revenue from marketing deals beginning last month, one potential partnership has seemed too obvious not to happen. Alabama freshman cornerback Ga'Quincy McKinstry, who goes by the nickname of Kool-Aid on the team's official roster, seems to have finally teamed up with the beverage brand Kool-Aid. The Twitter and Instagram accounts of the beverage brand, which is owned by Kraft Heinz, were changed Wednesday to McKinstry's name. "In honor of our new partnership, we've swapped names with Kool-Aid McKinstry and given him the power of OH YEAH," both accounts' new biographies now read. McKinstry's account on Twitter is now "Kool-Aid Man" with the company's branding used on the page. "Honored to partner with Kool-Aid the Brand … I will be sharing the OH YEAH title with the Kool-Aid Man!," McKinstry's bio states. - Birmingham News

  08/19/21 - Chris OwensrSr/2022, Alabama, 6-3, 300 (DS#13 C) + More +

Alabama football center Chris Owens asked a question during Phidarian Mathis' media availability Thursday. But joining the media isn't on the forefront of Owens' mind for when he's done playing. Instead, he would like to run a professional football team. "I work really hard on public speaking and trying to answer questions correctly - interview questions, all sorts of stuff," Owens said. "But I'm not really too sure. I kind of wanna go toward the NFL GM route someday." For now, he's focused on getting through this season and trying to get to the NFL.

Owens is heading into his sixth season with the Crimson Tide. He joined in 2016, making him one of the oldest in the group. "I already have a gray hair in my beard," Owens said. "Any time somebody sees it, they're like, 'Oh, you've got some fuzz in your beard.' I'm like, 'Nah, that's gray hair.' But I get an old man, senior citizen, I get called a lot of names, but I'm kind of used to it at this point." - Montgomery Advertiser

  08/18/21 - Henry Too TooSr/2023, Alabama, 6-1, 227 (DS#3 ILB) + More +

Replacing Dylan Moses with the top tackler on last year's Tennessee defense isn't a terrible trade off. Just Wednesday, ESPN ranked the top 50 newcomers nationally and To'o To'o was No. 1 ahead of new Georgia tight end Arik Gilbert (formerly of LSU) and No. 3 Bryce Young, the Alabama starting quarterback. And if Alabama were to lose him to anybody on the original recruiting trail, Tennessee was strangely a good spot. The fact he played for former Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt smoothed the path when learning the Tide's plan. "I think his familiarity with the system helped with the transition playing for Jeremy at Tennessee," Saban said Wednesday. "It's a very similar or same defense, probably. I never asked them what they did at Tennessee but just watching them on film, there are a lot of similarities."

Saban called To'o To'o a "very bright guy" who picked up the defense quickly and plays instinctively. Still, he's not crowning anyone the starter at his position. Saban noted two-year Alabama starter Christian Harris is playing well along with top 2020 reserve Jaylen Moody. "So," he said, "there's a lot of competition at that position." To'o To'o started 22 of the 23 games he played with the Vols, netting a team-highs with 76 total tackles and 10 for loss as a sophomore. He made just two stops against Alabama last October in Neyland Stadium after making one stop in the 2019 game in Bryant-Denny. - Birmingham News
