Antonio Alfano's career at Colorado is over before it got started. On Wednesday, the former five-star recruit announced on social media that he will enter his name in the NCAA transfer portal. Once rated as the No. 1 recruit in the country for the class of 2019, Alfano began his college football career at Alabama, but left the Crimson Tide that fall and entered the transfer portal. In November of 2019, the highly touted defensive lineman announced his intention to transfer to CU and enrolled in January of 2020. About six weeks after Alfano got to CU, however, the head coach who brought him here, Mel Tucker, bolted for Michigan State. CU hired Karl Dorrell on Feb. 23, 2020, as head coach. Shortly after Dorrell was hired, Alfano was suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. He was reinstated to the team in August, but was not cleared medically. - Daily Camera

A University of Colorado Boulder football player who isn't currently practicing with the team is facing charges on suspicion of harassment and resisting arrest in Broomfield, according to online court records. Antonio Alfano, 20, a CU defensive end, was arrested in Broomfield on Jan. 7, court records show. The charges are both misdemeanors. Records show he has no other charges issued against him in Colorado. Lindenstein confirmed that Alfano is part of the football team, but hasn't been medically cleared to play with the team, because he has been experiencing seizures. - Daily Camera

A battle with epilepsy has kept highly touted defensive end Antonio Alfano from being cleared to practice with the Colorado football team. Earlier this week, CU head coach Karl Dorrell told media, "We don't quite have a handle on his medical situation well enough to be released to practice and to compete right now." HIPAA laws have prevented CU from giving information on Alfano's health, but Alfano reached out to BuffZone to provide clarity to his situation. "My seizures are not under control right now, so I'm working with multiple doctors to figure out what is causing them," he said in a message to BuffZone. "I cannot practice or compete until I'm seizure free."

Rated the No. 1 recruit in the country for the 2019 class by 247Sports.com, Alfano, from Rahway, N.J., signed with Alabama and enrolled there in January of 2019. After going through the 2019 spring semester and fall camp with the Crimson Tide, he left the team and entered the NCAA transfer portal about a year ago. Former CU head coach Mel Tucker then recruited Alfano, who announced his decision last November to come to CU. Last winter, Alfano, a redshirt freshman, told BuffZone that while he was at Alabama, his grandmother, Victoria Richardson, had a stroke and went into a coma. Alfano was very close with his grandmother and it became difficult to focus on football because of her health. Richardson died Nov. 29 and Alfano came to CU looking to play in her honor. - Daily Camera

Freshman defensive lineman Antonio Alfano, who transferred to CU from Alabama in January, has not been medically cleared to practice. Even if he was physically ready, Alfano is waiting on an NCAA waiver that would allow him to play this season, because of his transfer. "That's still pending," Dorrell told BuffZone. "We're just now presenting it and we're working with the NCAA in terms of the ruling. It's an active case right now." Medical issues prevented Alfano from completing the spring semester, but he had a good summer school session, Dorrell said, and that will help in efforts to get the NCAA waiver. - Daily Camera

Antonio Alfano has had a bumpy first few months with the Colorado football program, but the talented defensive lineman is back on track. CU head coach Karl Dorrell told BuffZone.com on Wednesday that Alfano has been reinstated to the team after being suspended this spring. "Antonio, he had to do some work over the course of the summer to get reinstated in the program and he's met the expectations of it," Dorrell said. "There's some positive things for him that he's made, to his credit. I'm going to give him credit, because he buckled down and said, 'I want to be a football player and I want to be at the University of Colorado. What do I need to do, coach?' So, I mapped it out for him and he was able to come through with all of it." A former five-star recruit who signed with Alabama out of high school, Alfano transferred to CU in January. Antonio Alfano may have a chance to play for the Colorado Buffaloes after all. On May 29, CU told BuffZone.com that Alfano, a former five-star recruit who transferred from Alabama in January, was no longer enrolled in school and no longer on the team. Head coach Karl Dorrell told BuffZone, however, that Alfano remains indefinitely suspended and there is a path for him to return to active status if he chooses to take it. Dorrell declined to specify the steps Alfano needs to take in order to return. According to a source close to Alfano, he received a medical withdrawal from school for the spring semester. - Daily Camera

Former Alabama football player Antonio Alfano, a 5-star recruit in the 2019 signing class, has left the program at Colorado, according to a report by the Boulder Daily Camera. The school confirmed Alfano's departure to the Daily Camera's Brian Howell, according to the report. Alfano enrolled at Colorado in January after leaving Alabama without ever playing in a game. Alfano, a 6-foot-5, 280-pound native of New Jersey, was recruited to the Buffaloes by former head coach Mel Tucker, a one-time Alabama assistant. Tucker left for Michigan State in February and was replaced by Karl Dorrell.

Alfano was suspended by Dorrell in March for violation of team rules. He was also suspended at Alabama in September before entering the NCAA transfer portal in October. "He's kind of disappeared a little bit," Alabama coach Nick Saban said in September. "I talked to our team today about the fact that people make mistakes. We all mistakes. I make mistakes. Probably everybody in this room makes mistakes. We make mistakes as parents. We make mistakes as coaches. We make mistakes in just about everything that we do. But I think you compound the problem when you don't confront the mistakes that you make and you create greater consequences for yourself because of the choices and decisions that you make after you make a mistake. So hopefully this will be a learning experience for all the guys on our team." - Birmingham News
