LSU Football   LSU football coach Brian Kelly took a risk last spring when he decided to bring in Arizona State quarterback transfer Jayden Daniels from the portal. The Tigers already had three scholarship quarterbacks: Myles Brennan, Garrett Nussmeier and Walker Howard. Brennan had SEC starting experience. Nussmeier had a talented arm and could start in 2023 with Brennan gone. Howard was a top-40 freshman signee who could eventually push Nussmeier. But in came Daniels anyway. "I think we started with just wanting to add more competition (to the room)," Kelly said before the start of last year's spring practices. In the end, the move paid off for Kelly. Daniels won the starting job and held it for the rest of 2022. He led LSU to a 10-win season, an SEC West championship and the Tigers' first home win over Alabama since 2010.

That success made the news of Daniels returning in 2023 an exciting one for most LSU fans. "I felt like I had unfinished business in college," Daniels said prior to LSU's Citrus Bowl win over Purdue. "So I wanted to come back and compete for a national championship." And Tiger fans should be excited; LSU has a Heisman Trophy candidate on its hands. Daniels, while playing under a new coaching staff, working behind a new offensive line and throwing to new weapons, was an above-average SEC quarterback in 2022. He threw for 2,913 yards, completed a career-best 68.6% of his passes and only threw three interceptions, seven fewer than in his final season at Arizona State. He was also one of the best running quarterbacks in college football. Daniels rushed for a career-high 885 yards and 11 touchdowns. He generated 4.52 yards after contact per rush attempt and forced 54 missed tackles, according to Pro Football Focus, leading all FBS quarterbacks with at least 70 rush attempts in both categories. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

Ohio State Football   Ohio State offensive lineman Avery Henry is about a month into his chemotherapy treatment and he's already beginning to highlight his family's support. After revealing an osteosarcoma diagnosis in December before first starting chemotherapy in January, Henry said in a tweet both he and his brother shaved their heads as the treatment continues. "It's been roughly a month since my first chemo treatment," Henry tweeted Monday. "I want to keep you guys updated on the process. Yesterday my younger brother and I decided to shave our hair! I can't thank you enough Dane. You may be my younger brother but in many ways I look up to you!" Henry ended the tweet with the hashtag "Averystrong."

Henry did not see any action for Ohio State as a freshman in 2022, but he traveled with the team to Atlanta for the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Peach Bowl. Standing at 6 feet 6 and 309 pounds, the tackle was a four-year starter at St. Clairsville High School, playing as a two-way lineman for a team that finished 13-2 in 2021 and advanced to the Division IV regional finals. - Columbus Dispatch

Auburn Football   Two weeks after Zac Etheridge announced he was "here to stay" as one of Auburn's assistant coaches, two of his top players from last fall followed suit. D.J. James announced his decision to return for a second season with the Tigers on New Year's Eve, while fellow cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett did the same two days later. The decisions by James and Pritchett weren't entirely unexpected - the two had ongoing conversations with Etheridge and the rest of the staff since the season ended - but they marked considerable offseason wins for new Auburn coach Hugh Freeze and his staff heading into Year 1. "Obviously, they created a lot of value for themselves with their play and what they did on the field, but a reality, the experience that they have and to be able to come back to a group and not losing anyone in the secondary - I mean, it's been obviously huge to us because the leadership back should be a great experience. But having those two guys back help us on the outside."

In James and Pritchett, Auburn returns both of its starting corners from last season. James arrived at Auburn last offseason after starting his career at Oregon, and the Mobile native acclimated himself well in his return to his home state as he established himself as one of the top corners in the SEC in 2022. The 6-foot-1, 174-pounder had 38 total tackles, with 25 solo stops and one tackle for a loss. He had one interception, which he returned for a touchdown during Auburn's home finale against Western Kentucky, and he tied Pritchett for the team lead with eight pass breakups while earning second-team All-SEC honors from the Associated Press and the league's coaches. - Birmingham News

Baylor Football   Twenty-one new Baylor football players have enrolled for the spring semester including 11 transfers and 10 high school signees. The 21 players are among 32 new players that have signed with the Bears for the 2023 season. The 11 remaining players will join the program this summer. Prominent among the transfers starting this spring is former Mississippi State quarterback Sawyer Robertson, who will battle returning junior Blake Shapen for the starting job.

Robertson was a four-star quarterback at Lubbock Coronado, where he was a three-year starter who threw for 12,256 yards and 146 touchdowns while completing 64 percent of his passes before graduating in 2021. "It's huge getting back to Texas," said Robertson after announcing his transfer in early January. "There's a lot of history at Baylor and they've had a lot of success, especially recent history. It's a great opportunity and I really like the coaching staff." Former BYU offensive linemen Campbell Barrington and Clark Barrington, Arkansas wide receiver Ketron Jackson, Northern Arizona quarterback RJ Martinez, North Texas tight end Jake Roberts, and Oklahoma State running back Dominic Richardson round out the offensive transfers. - Waco Tribune Herald

Florida Football   When Florida football opens spring practice on March 4, new faces will take on new roles across both lines of scrimmage. The Gators filled holes on the offensive and defensive fronts due to some expected and some unexpected departures. On the offensive front, Florida added three linemen from the portal with Power 5 conference experience - Baylor guard Micah Mazzucca (6-foot-5, 322 pounds), Alabama tackle Dameion George Jr. (6-6, 372) and Kentucky tackle Kiyaunta Goodwin (6-7, 372).

In recruiting, Florida signed four more offensive linemen out of high school, which included Under All-American starting guard Roderick Kearney (6-4, 292) and four-star tackle Caden Jones (6-6, 307). "It's probably one of the areas where I think we did the best work," Florida coach Billy Napier said. "When you think about, you know, the traits there. We've got some experienced players, but I also think some of the young players that we added have significant height, length, functional movement, bright futures." - Gainesville Sun

Louisiana Tech Football   Odieu Hiliare and Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim put up impressive numbers together at Alabama A&M. The two wide receivers want to do the same thing at Bowling Green State University. Hiliare and Ibrahim, Florida natives who excelled together for three seasons at the Football Championship Subdivision school, have reunited in northwest Ohio. Ibrahim transferred to BGSU in mid-January, around one year after Hiliare joined the Falcons. "When we first came to A&M, met in the 2019 summer, we told each other we're going to start something together and we're going to finish it together," Ibrahim said. "We started at A&M, and we're going to finish at Bowling Green." Hiliare and Ibrahim both have one season of eligibility remaining. The duo will be aiming to recreate the magic when they combined for nearly 2,000 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns the last time they played together in 2021. - Toledo Blade

Arizona Football   Prioritizing offense led Arizona to make a pretty substantial jump from the inaugural season of the Jedd Fisch era to this past season. The additions of quarterback Jayden de Laura, wide receiver Jacob Cowing and tight end Tanner McLachlan through the transfer portal - coupled with star receiver Tetairoa McMillan (the highest-rated high school signee in UA history) and offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea from the high school ranks - catapulted the Wildcats from the No. 71-ranked passing offense in FBS to the sixth best, averaging 318.4 yards per game.

All of the aforementioned players, along with other standouts such as left tackle Jordan Morgan - whom Fisch dubbed a "first-round draft pick" during his National Signing Day news conference - and running back Michael Wiley, are all returning for the 2023 season with hopes of leading the Wildcats to a bowl game for the first time in six years. - Arizona Star News

Transfer Football   The University of Hawaii football team is set to upgrade its offense with Monday's first of 15 spring practices. Last year's spring training, the first under head coach Timmy Chang, was intended to promote unity following a tumultuous end to the 2021 season. This year's aim is to fully implement the run-and-shoot offense that was prolific for 13 UH seasons through 2011 and found revived success in 2018 and 2019. The Warriors used a mashup of schemes last season. Chang and co-offensive coordinators Ian Shoemaker and Roman Sapolu will craft the game plan in meetings and practices each week during the season. But Chang, a record-setting, run-and-shoot quarterback at UH and Saint Louis School, will call the offensive plays during games.

Brayden Schager enters spring training as the No. 1 quarterback. When the Warriors began introducing elements of the run-and-shoot in last season's fifth game, Schager "started making some great throws," according to Chang. "He's gotten better. Schager throws the ball hard. Schager knows the drops. He's been good." Chang said Joey Yellen, who transferred from Pittsburgh last summer, "reminds me of (Nick) Rolovich 100%." In 2020, Chang joined the Warriors as a freshman and Rolovich transferred from City College of San Francisco. From an initial nine-quarterback field, Rolovich won the starting job. But after two uneven games, Rolovich was replaced by Chang. The next season, following an injury to Chang, Rolovich had a record-setting season. Against Miami (Ohio) and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Rolovich threw for 500 yards and seven touchdowns. Similar to Rolovich, according to Chang, Yellen has "that intelligence. The ball comes out on time." - Honolulu Advertiser

South Carolina Football   South Carolina football players Monteque Rhames, Anthony Rose and Cameron Upshaw have been suspended from the team, coach Shane Beamer announced on Friday. "Our student-athletes know what is expected of them," Beamer said in a statement. "They know that both the university and the football program will hold them accountable for their actions and decisions." No reason for the suspensions was given in the statement. But a search of online court logs revealed that Rhames, 18, of Sumter, was detained at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia on Friday afternoon on charges of carrying weapons on school property and obstructing justice.

Online records say Rhames was booked at midnight Feb. 3. There is no record of arrests for Rose and Upshaw. Rhames was out of jail by Friday evening after posting a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. An incident report log from the university's police department revealed that USC officers were dispatched to 650 Lincoln on campus on the evening of Jan. 25 for an undisclosed housing complaint. That address is where all freshmen USC athletes are required to live. Rose, Rhames and an unidentified juvenile are listed as suspects in what the report called a "weapon law violation" and listing a rifle as the weapon. No other details were released. - The Post and Courier

South Carolina Football   Hugh Freeze's arrival on the Plains brought loads of questions, and many of the on-the-field wonders came from one spot: the quarterback room. Would Auburn dip into the transfer portal for a quarterback? What does Freeze, a known quarterback guru, think of Robby Ashford? Is last year's Week One starter, TJ Finley, even still around? A little over two months later, Auburn wrapped up its first signing class under Freeze. It has seen the first of two transfer portal windows come and go. And still, a lot, if not all, of the questions surrounding the position remain. Speaking to reporters Thursday, Freeze said he thinks he'll know lots more about his quarterback room after spring practices start Feb. 27. "Truthfully, when I watched the cut-ups that I've watched, man, it's hard," Freeze said of Auburn's quarterbacks. "It's hard for me to adequately judge quarterbacks if they're not afforded the opportunity to stand in the pocket and make reads and make different throws for a decent percentage of time. The sample size for that is pretty small if they weren't under some type of duress, or maybe it was more of a move-the-pocket scheme. "So I'm anxious to get into spring and kind of see how they handle that, and then I'll go from there with what we do in the second portal window."

Auburn head football coach Hugh Freeze previews spring practices, recaps signing day while speaking to the media Feb. 2. Freeze confirmed reports that the program entertained bringing in a quarterback during the first transfer portal window, which closed in late January. Coastal Carolina's Grayson McCall, North Carolina State's Devin Leary and Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders were all named that were tied to the Tigers. Although he didn't specify who was pursued, Freeze said he "never felt great" about many quarterbacks in the portal. "I was OK with that, honestly," Freeze said. "I'm excited to work with the ones we have." - Opelika-Auburn News

Wisconsin Football   Luke Fickell has seen up close his new quarterback on some of his worst days as a college passer. Tanner Mordecai, arguably the headliner of a 13-player transfer class for the University of Wisconsin football team, faced off against Fickell and his Cincinnati Bearcats teams each of the last two years in American Athletic Conference play. Mordecai and SMU couldn't quite crack Fickell and coordinator Mike Tressel's defense, falling 48-14 in 2021, then Mordecai suffered a concussion that forced him out of a 29-27 defeat last season.

Still, Fickell saw talent and moxie in Mordecai, who put up big numbers against pretty much every other opponent he faced with SMU. "I think we were very fortunate when we played him," Fickell said Thursday at an alumni event in Milwaukee, "so we'll harass him a little bit about that." Mordecai was one of three transfer quarterbacks to join the Badgers during the first portal window, along with Nick Evers (Oklahoma) and Braedyn Locke (Mississippi State). SMU was 14-10 with Mordecai under center, but offense was rarely the problem. The Mustangs averaged 37.2 points per game last season, good for 12th in the FBS, after scoring 38.4 points per game in 2021. He led a spread-out offense somewhat similar to the one he'll be asked to engineer under Fickell and new offensive coordinator Phil Longo. - Wisconsin State Journal

Kansas State Football   Keagan Johnson was careful not to say anything bad about his former school when the Iowa transfer spoke to reporters for the first time since he enrolled at Kansas State and joined the Wildcats as a wide receiver, but it is obvious that he thinks he is stepping into a more powerful offense than the one he left behind. Statistics back him up. Iowa averaged 251.6 yards per game last season, a number so low that it ranked ahead of only one team in all of college football - New Mexico. By comparison, K-State put up 418.8 yards per game on its way to 10 victories and a Big 12 championship.

There is no comparison between the two systems and Johnson is giddy about his potential with his new team. "I think I can provide an explosive weapon," Johnson said, "and be a big-play type talent." Johnson came to that conclusion while he watched K-State defeat TCU in the Big 12 championship game last December. The 6-foot-1 and 194-pound playmaker liked the way the Wildcats used Malik Knowles as both a receiver and a ball-carrier out of the backfield on gadget plays. Now that Knowles is off to the professional ranks, Johnson thinks he can replace his skills next season - and maybe even do more while playing under offensive coordinator Collin Klein. "I really liked their trajectory and the way that Coach Klein has added new things," Johnson said. "They have a lot of different, creative ways to get their playmakers the ball and it's really appealing to me." The possibility of taking over as K-State's new No. 1 receiver or its top deep threat was one of the main attractions that drew him to Manhattan. - The Kansas City Star

Fresno State Football   Maryland's Chris Ryland kicked four field goals and Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener passed for 139 yards and a touchdown to lead the National team to a 27-10 victory over the American team in the Senior Bowl on Saturday. Haener, a Monte Vista-Danville alum who was named the game's MVP, delivered a 44-yard touchdown pass to Stanford receiver Michael Wilson in the fourth quarter. Haener thrived on a short-handed quarterback situation for the team, completing 12 of 19 passes after setting a Fresno State career record with a 68.1% completion rate.

"I just wanted to come out here and get a win with the guys and cap off a really good week," Haener told NFL Network. "Just have a really good week and get the win. "We found a way to get the win and that was fun." Haener missed four games with an ankle injury this season but returned to help finish off a nine-game winning streak for the Bulldogs. Like the other quarterbacks in the game, he's trying to improve on mid- to- late-round draft projections. "I love proving the doubters wrong," Haener said. "I love the motivation. I love the passion that it brings me. Keep coming with it, man." - San Francisco Chronicle

Mississippi Football   As he often does, Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin spoke in NFL terms when he broke down his two quarterback additions out of the transfer portal. Spencer Sanders, a four-year starter at Oklahoma State, is the veteran. Walker Howard, a top-five quarterback in last year's recruiting class from LSU, is the draft pick. "I'm very excited about the quarterback room," Kiffin said Wednesday. "I was very concerned about it from pure numbers, you guys can figure that out. My job is to put together the best roster every year. And you know, we had a chance to bring those two guys in."

Kiffin was asked if there would be a quarterback competition between Sanders, Walker and returning starter Jaxson Dart and did not provide a straight answer. He did, however, explain that he was pleased with Dart's progress as the season went on. Dart finished the season with a 62.4% completion rate, 2,974 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. "I think Jaxson did a lot of great things last year," Kiffin said. "I know Jaxson, when he initially played versus the middle and end, dramatically improved for a young quarterback. We're very excited about continuing that." - The Clarion Ledger

Bowling Green Football   When Bowling Green State University's football team opened spring practice this week, a familiar face flew around the middle of the Falcons' defense. For a short stretch earlier this month, that wasn't going to be the case. But a change of heart brought back BGSU's best tackler over the past three seasons. Darren Anders, a 6-foot, 230-pound inside linebacker, withdrew his name from the transfer portal a week after entering it around Jan. 1. The Falcons' standout is excited to be finishing his career at BGSU, where he is hoping to lead his team to a Mid-American Conference title. "I got my degree, I graduated, so I was just thinking that possibly see what other options are out there," Anders said. "I think I was in the portal for six days or something, and I really just came to the decision that I didn't want to leave BG. This is the place that I want to spend my last year at, and I want to win a championship. "I don't think anything would be more sweet than winning the championship and turning this program around."

Anders' decision to return is rare in the Football Bowl Subdivision, but something the Falcons have certainly embraced. Head coach Scot Loeffler simply said "I'm jacked that Darren's back" in a recent interview with The Blade. According to the NCAA, only five percent of FBS student athletes withdrew or removed their name from the transfer portal in 2020 and 2021. Fifty-four percent reported to have enrolled at a new NCAA member school, while 41 percent were still active, may have transferred to a non-NCAA school, or may have left their sport. "To have him back on that defense, it means a lot," BGSU senior wide receiver Odieu Hiliare said. "The transfer portal, a lot of players leaving and we're bringing in new people. With him being a leader and knowing the system, he'll be able to bring guys up and tell guys what to do, so that's great having Darren back." - Toledo Blade
