Florida State Football   The Florida Senate voted unanimously to repeal the state's name, image and likeness (NIL) law Friday, sending the bill to Gov. Ron DeSantis' desk. The 34-0 vote on the Senate floor means the bill, HB 7B, went through two committees and both chambers in this week's special session without a single vote against it. "We've done the part to push the NCAA to stop abdicating their responsibility back to the states," said Sen. Corey Simon, the former Florida State football star. "And we're now putting it on the universities to educate our kids at what their best practices are going forward."

The bill is intended to fix a perceived disadvantage for Florida schools and their athletes caused by the current structure. Florida was one of the first states to vote to allow its college athletes to make money off their name, image and likeness when the law passed in 2020. But it included some restrictions. Teams and coaches, for example, can't facilitate players' deals. Some states never passed NIL laws. Others, including Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina, have repealed, suspended or loosened them. All three of those states have big-name programs that compete for recruits against programs like Florida and Florida State. - Tampa Tribune

Houston Football   Want to watch the University of Houston's first football season in the Big 12? It's going to cost a little extra. The price for UH season tickets at TDECU Stadium will increase by an average 14 percent for the 2023 season, the school announced Friday. "This is an exciting and historic time to be a part of the University of Houston family, as we formally join the Big 12," Chris Pezman, vice president for athletics, wrote in an email to season ticket holders explaining the price bump. Season-ticket renewals begin Monday. The general public can purchase season tickets beginning Feb. 20.

Along with admittance into a Power Five conference, the Big 12 move allows UH to renew in-state rivalries and offer the most attractive home schedule in decades, a seven-game slate highlighted by visits from the University of Texas and TCU. The 14-percent increase is for a six-game home schedule: Big 12 games against TCU (Sept. 16), West Virginia (Oct. 12), Cincinnati (Nov. 11) Oklahoma State (Nov. 18) and non-conference games against UTSA (Sept. 2) and Sam Houston (Sept. 23). - Houston Chronicle

Central Michigan Football   Put your hat in the ring, your name in the sweepstake. On Thursday evening former Central Michigan standout wide out Dallas Dixon declared for the 2023 NFL Draft in Kansas City on April 27-29. Dixon is the sixth Chippewa to declare for the draft and joins running back Lew Nichols III, wide out Carlos Carriere, defensive lineman Thomas Incoom, tight end Joel Wilson and cornerback Ronald Kent Jr.

Dixon had a big 2021 season, yet was sidelined for the 2022 season in just the second game with a shoulder injury. In 2021 the third-team All-MAC selection caught 45 passes for 701 yards and eight touchdowns. He caught at least one pass in all 13 games in 2021. He is currently training in Marquette in the Upper Peninsula to get ready for CMU's 'Pro Day' in early March. - Morning Sun

Ohio State Football   C.J. Stroud wasn't surprised about the attention he received as Ohio State's starting quarterback over the past two seasons. But looking back, Stroud told radio host Jim Rome about the ways Ohio State fans would try and get his attention during his time in Columbus. C.J. Stroud on Proving People Right from The Jim Rome Show on Vimeo. "For me and my teammates, man, being at Ohio State, if you have any source of social media or type of technology, Ohio State fans have it," Stroud said. "So, man, I was getting DMs - I don't have social media throughout the season. I was getting DMs on Venmo, the money app, from fans telling me, 'Play better,' things like that." In two seasons as Ohio State's starting quarterback, Stroud, a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist, threw for 8,123 passing yards, 85 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. - Columbus Dispatch

Auburn Football   Brian Battie wasn't on Cadillac Williams' radar until Philip Montgomery planted a seed during an early film session among Auburn's new offensive assistants. Before Battie, the former South Florida running back, hit the portal, Montgomery and Williams were studying film when the former Tulsa head coach recalled one of the best individual performances against his team last season. In Tulsa's 48-42 win against USF on Nov. 18, Battie rushed for 169 yards while averaging 8.89 yards per carry. It was the highest individual rushing performance surrendered by Tulsa's defense last season. "Cadillac, South Florida's got a running back that's tough," Williams recalled Montgomery saying. Williams took note and filed it away in the back of his mind. Auburn's running back room was in need of another option; it was returning Jarquez Hunter and a less-experienced piece in Damari Alston while bringing in four-star 2023 signee Jeremiah Cobb, but the Tigers wanted more depth after leading rusher Tank Bigsby declared for the NFL Draft. The only problem? At the time, Battie wasn't in the transfer portal.

That changed on Jan. 6, when Battie opted to transfer from USF after three productive seasons, including a consensus All-America nod as a return specialist in 2021 and a 1,000-yard campaign in 2022. Williams perked up as soon as he saw Battie's name in the portal, recalling Montgomery's earlier mention of the 5-foot-8, 165-pounder. "To have a guy like him jump in there, I was ecstatic," Williams said. "So, (I) got an opportunity to cut on his film, and his film speaks for itself." It's not every day a program has an opportunity to bring in a former All-American through the transfer market, and Williams was thoroughly impressed with what he saw from Battie during his time at South Florida in the various roles he played. There was of course the 1,186 rushing yards last fall, when Battie averaged 6.7 yards per carry-the 20th-best mark among FBS running backs in 2022. His 98.83 rushing yards per game ranked 23rd among all qualifying players in the country. He had seven 100-yard performances as a junior, including five in a row to close out the year, and has nine for his career. - Birmingham News

Central Florida Football   Arkansas has set key dates for its spring football practice. The Razorbacks are scheduled to begin the practice season March 9 and have scheduled their spring game for April 15 at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The spring game is scheduled to begin at noon, but TV and streaming details have yet to be announced. The spring game was scheduled to coincide with a home softball game against Alabama-Birmingham and a home baseball game against Tennessee later that day.

Festivities will begin that morning with live music and food trucks as part of HogTown north of the stadium. Admission to the spring game and HogTown will be free. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said last week the team will practice five times prior to the university's spring break, which is scheduled for March 20-24, then complete the 15-practice season after classes resume March 27. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Kentucky Football   Robert Hinson knows both sides of Devin Leary's personality. One is the polite gentleman with a constant smile on his face. The one who will sign a thousand autographs. The one who won't turn down a photo request from an admiring fan. The one who once was the face of North Carolina State's football program - and, in due time, will assume that same role at Kentucky. Then there's the other side. Not mean. Just motivated. "Folks better not ever take (those things) as him not being a competitor," Hinson, Leary's coach at Timber Creek High School in New Jersey, told The Courier Journal over the phone last month, "because that smile will turn into a growl in a minute. He is a fierce competitor, and he loves to prove people wrong." An avid college football follower might wonder: How many doubters could Leary, the ACC's preseason player of the year last season as N.C. State's quarterback, possibly possess?

Enough that Hinson becomes animated at the thought of it. "Us guys who coach, and even his family, we look at all the media prognosticators who say, 'This guy is going to be a great NFL guy' or 'This guy is going to translate great to the NFL game,'" Hinson said. "... Or they're eventually going to be something. But Devin already has shown he has those abilities. I think he's still flying under the radar." The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Leary will have the opportunity to showcase his quarterbacking talent to those not already aware - to Hinson's delight - when the Wildcats begin their 2023 campaign. Transferring from N.C. State in December, Leary will suit up for his sixth, and final, college season this fall at Kentucky. It's a scenario few could have envisioned last summer. Blame a season-ending injury last year with the Wolfpack, his second in three years, for that. As Leary continues to recover from his latest injury, he's embarking on a new challenge: stepping into the void left by former UK quarterback Will Levis. - Courier Journal

Kansas Football   There are going to be a host of newcomers on Kansas football's roster this fall. The Jayhawks announced some of those additions in the 2023 signing class in December. They announced more over the course of the past two-plus weeks. And those prospects, from the high school and college levels, covered a wide range of positions that address different needs Kansas has as it prepares for another run at a bowl game this upcoming college football season. Among the many topics head coach Lance Leipold addressed last week, he specifically addressed the recruitments of a number of the newcomers. Three in that group were Damarius McGhee, Jacoby Davis and Damon Greaves. And here's more on what Leipold had to say about them and how they fit into the Jayhawks' future.

McGhee was a 247Sports Composite four-star prospect out of high school, and according to 247Sports, the LSU transfer is a three-star talent out of the portal. It may not have worked out for McGhee at LSU, where he spent the first two years of his college career. There, he appeared in 13 games across two seasons and redshirted in 2022. But if it works out at Kansas, the Jayhawks are getting one of the top talents at the cornerback position from the 2021 recruiting class. Leipold said McGhee has great cover skills and his addition is a chance for the team to get better. "In fact, when I was on the road here last week I ran into a coach from (McGhee's) former school," said Leipold, speaking Feb. 1, "and he had nothing but positive things about (McGhee). And if (McGhee) stays healthy and does the things that he needs to, he doesn't see any reason why that (McGhee) won't be a fine addition and help this team." - Topeka Capital Journal

Ohio State Football   Garrett Wilson stands by his opinion that Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the best Ohio State wide receiver between himself and Chris Olave. Talking to Yahoo Sports' Matt Harmon from Super Bowl LVII Radio Row, the former Ohio State and current New York Jets wide receiver gave people a preview of what Smith-Njigba could do in the NFL after three seasons with the Buckeyes. "Jaxon is a cold-blooded man, man," Wilson said. "That boy is, we call him 'The Natural.' He's got hands, he's got feet that will throw you by, make you miss. He'll do the laundry for you. Jaxon's cold, man. I'm confident that wherever he goes, he's going to make a big impact early." Smith-Njigba tweeted that he appreciated the kind words from Wilson, knowing that both him and Olave was the kind of production he was chasing. "Always appreciate it," he wrote. "Both you guys are the BEST though! It's fun to chase greatness."

In 2021, Smith-Njigba set school single-season records with 95 catches for 1,606 receiving yards, including a 15-reception, 347-yard day against Utah in the Rose Bowl in which he scored three touchdowns. But in 2022, Smith-Njigba spent the majority of the season sidelined with a hamstring injury, and was limited to five receptions for 43 yards against Notre Dame, Toledo and Iowa. Ahead of Ohio State's College Football Playoff semifinal game against Georgia, the school announced he would not play in the Peach Bowl and instead enter the 2023 NFL draft. - Columbus Dispatch

Penn State Football   Nick Singleton can't seem to shake it. Everywhere the Penn State phenom turns, he still manages to see his record-setting Rose Bowl run. Singleton's dash through Utah's defense, one that encapsulated his electrifying freshman season, happened five weeks ago. Friends keep sending him the highlight anyway, and he can't help but notice when it pops up on social media. Singleton even admitted that he would look up the 87-yard touchdown himself and relive it in the days following Penn State's 35-21 win. And who could blame him? "Back then, I would watch it," Singleton said with a smile. "I was feeling good." Singleton knows that jaw-dropping moment in Pasadena is going to be replayed over and over again.

It's going to be remembered like Saquon Barkley's and Ki-Jana Carter's runs at the Rose Bowl. He knows that's something to be cherished. But Singleton also knows he has to move on. That was his point of emphasis when he met with reporters on Tuesday afternoon for the first time since Pasadena. "Now you have to worry about what's next," Singleton said in the Beaver Stadium media room. "Now you have to worry about this season." Some freshmen might let a year like the one Singleton had get to their heads. Singleton was named the Big Ten's freshman of the year and a freshman All-American by several national outlets after leading Penn State with 1,061 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground. The five-star prospect from Governor Mifflin ended the campaign with seven runs of 40-plus yards, second in the FBS. - Tribune Review

Georgia State Football   The 2022 football season officially ends Sunday with the playing of Super LVII. One day later, the Georgia State Panthers will be back on the field for the start of 2023 spring practice. Monday morning's workout is the first of 15 spring practices over the next four weeks. Spring practice will culminate with the annual Spring Game, scheduled for Thursday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Center Parc Stadium. Admission and parking are free, and fans can register for free tickets here.

Head coach Shawn Elliott, entering his seventh season, explained the decision to move up spring practice to the earliest start date in program history. "We talked about what we needed to do to become a bigger, stronger, faster football team, and our new strength and conditioning coach, Mike Sirignano, thought it would be really beneficial to move spring practice up," Elliott said. "That will give us give us a few extra weeks on the back end to continuously train." When asked what would be the focus this spring, Elliott didn't mention schemes or personnel. "Fighting through adversity, knowing how to put away opponents, and learning to strain to finish," he immediately answered. "This is going to be a physical spring practice, it's going to be competitive spring practice, it's going to be a tough spring practice." The Panthers return six starters on offense, including quarterback Darren Grainger, and six on defense. Other top returnees include running back Marcus Carroll, receiver Robert Lewis, tackle Travis Glover, defensive ends Javon Denis and Jeffery Clark, and linebackers Blake Carroll, Jordan Veneziale and Jontrey Hunter. - Georgia State Football

Hawaii Football   In an effort to overhaul its roster following the mass exodus of the Todd Graham era, 53 newcomers joined the University of Hawaii football team in 2022, while an additional 30 players signed in advance of the 2023 season. Among the players who joined the Rainbow Warriors seeking a fresh start is former Kansas receiver Steven McBride, who caught 20 passes for 128 yards and no touchdowns over his three seasons. He'll have two seasons of eligibility remaining at UH. "It's crazy to come out here in paradise, to have a fresh start," McBride told KHON2 sports director Rob DeMello. "You know, just come and feel what is way, way different than the mainland so that's what I really like about here. Just getting around exploring the island and just Hawaii period is crazy."

McBride joins an inexperienced wide receivers room at Hawaii but one that figures to have its yardage total go up across the board as the program returns to the run and shoot offense. "I mean, my focus is making a big impact on the team, playing my position, playing my position total to the max and using my talent to impact the team. I'm looking to be one of the receivers to make a big impact on it, be a part of it," McBride said of the run and shoot. "It's a different type of offense that I've been through and I've been through a lot of offenses, but this one is is unique for the game." - Khon2.com

Iowa Football   On Wednesday, Iowa football added one more piece to its team during the early NCAA transfer window; and it's at a position of need. Virginia linebacker Nick Jackson announced his decision to transfer to the Hawkeyes over Oklahoma. He will graduate this spring and join Iowa in the summer as a graduate transfer. He's regarded as a four-star transfer portal player according to 247 Sports.   Florida State Football   Florida State football coach Mike Norvell, whose team ended last season with a six-game winning streak, was rewarded with a three-year contract extension that will pay him an average of $8.05 million annually through 2029. The school released the contract Wednesday. It will pay Norvell $5.6 million in 2023, $7.6 million in 2024, $7.8 million in 2025, $8.1 million in 2026, $8.3 million in 2027, $8.6 million in 2028 and $8.8 million in 2029. He also gets a $250,000 retention bonus if he's still employed every Dec. 31. Norvell earned $4.5 million last year and would have made $7.25 million in the final year of his previous deal.

This is the second extension for Norvell, who was hired after the 2019 season. The Seminoles added a year to his contract following the 2021 season. FSU finished 10-3 last season and ranked No. 11 in the final AP college football poll. The Seminoles beat Florida State and Miami - and scored at least 45 points against both in-state rivals in the same season for the first time. FSU also was the only team to lead its conference in both total offense and total defense. Along with Southeastern Conference heavyweights Alabama and Georgia, FSU was one of three teams to rank in the top 15 in yards per play on both sides of the ball. "Coach Norvell has re-established a culture that the entire Seminole Family can appreciate," athletic director Michael Alford said in a statement.
