Air Force Football   Cade Harris had two short touchdown runs in the first half and Air Force had no problem dispatching FCS-member Merrimack with a 21-6 victory in a season opener for both teams on Saturday. Harris scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and a 4-yard run with 16 seconds left before halftime to stake Air Force to a 14-0 lead. Merrimack went 0 for 5 on third-down conversions and managed just three first downs before intermission. The Falcons final score came midway through the fourth quarter after Merrimack turned the ball over deep in its own territory.

Luke Fischer recovered a fumble by Warriors receiver Jermaine Corbett and returned it five yards, giving Air Force the ball on the 14-yard line. The Falcons rushed six straight times with Aiden Calvert scoring from a yard out with 8:31 left to play. Merrimack avoided a shutout on the final play of the game when backup quarterback Ayden Pereira connected with Jalen McDonald for an 11-yard touchdown. Air Force had only 20 more yards of offense than the Warriors - 237-217. The Falcons’ last shutout came in a 28-0 victory over New Mexico in November of 2020. - AP College Football

Oklahoma Football   John Mateer threw five touchdown passes and Washington State began a season of dramatic change in big-play style with a 70-30 win over Portland State on Saturday. Left behind with Oregon State amid the ruins of the Pac-12 collapse, the Cougars are playing an independent schedule, facing mostly Mountain West schools. But Saturday they created 637 yards offense and eight offensive scoring plays of 30 yards or more against the FCS Vikings. It was the first time WSU reached 70 points since 1997 when it scored 77 against Southwestern Louisiana.

Mateer, who had appeared in 12 games over the past two seasons with just 19 total passing attempts, started for WSU, taking over for Cam Ward, who transferred to Miami. Mateer threw TD passes ranging from 30 to 59 yards, starting with Kris Hutson’s diving catch. Mateer added a 40-yard touchdown on a quarterback draw and WSU led 49-17 at halftime. The Cougars had nearly 400 yards offense in the first half. The defense also turned in a big play when Stephen Hall made an interception a few yards deep in the end zone and returned it for officially a school-record 100-yard pick-6. - AP College Football

  08/31/24 - QB Cam WardrSr/2025, Miami + More +

Miami Football   Cam Ward threw for 385 yards and three touchdowns - looking cool, calm and collected on a sweltering Saturday in the Swamp - and No. 19 Miami dominated Florida 41-17 to give coach Mario Cristobal a signature victory to start his third season at his alma mater. The Hurricanes controlled both lines of scrimmage and never trailed in the renewal of a once-heated rivalry. The latest iteration was a one-sided beatdown, the kind that sent Florida fans scurrying for the exits in the third quarter and raised speculation about coach Billy Napier's job security. Napier fell to 11-15 in Gainesville, including 2-10 against ranked opponents and 1-8 against rivals Miami, Florida State, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee. The Gators lost their sixth consecutive game overall and witnessed the end of their 33-game winning streak in home openers, a run that started with Steve Spurrier's arrival in 1990. Now, Napier has the same number of losses at Florida Field in two-plus seasons (five) as Spurrier had in a dozen years.

Ward, the former Incarnate Word and Washington State starter, showed why he was the Atlantic Coach Conference's preseason Player of the Year before ever playing a down in a Miami uniform. He completed 25 of 33 passes, with an interception. Ward became the first Miami QB since at least 1979 to throw for 300 yards in his first start with the team. Scott Covington threw for 295 against Boston College in in 1996, which had been the most by a Miami quarterback in his debut over the last 45 seasons. Xavier Restrepo caught seven passes for 112 yards, including a 24-yarder for a touchdown. Ward's best throw, though, was a 23-yarder in the back of the end zone to Jacolby George. - AP College Football

Indiana Football   Ty Son Lawton rushed for two scores in the first half, Kurtis Rourke threw for another score and the new-look Indiana Hoosiers pulled away from Florida International 31-7 in Saturday's season opener. Lawton carried 16 times for 74 yards in his first game with the Hoosiers (1-0). Rourke finished 15 of 24 with 180 yards in his Indiana debut, and Curt Cignetti became the first Hoosiers head coach to win his first game since 2007. The Panthers (0-1) have lost five straight and eight of their last nine dating to last season, falling to 0-13 all-time against Big Ten schools.

Keyone Jenkins completed 20 of 29 passes for 129 yards with one interception and hooked up with Rocky Beers for a 7-yard TD pass in the final minute of the first half for Florida International's only score. Beers left the game with a hamstring injury after the score and was ruled out of the game in the second half. Indiana sealed it with a 51-yard TD run from Elijah Green with 1:06 to play. - AP College Football

Texas Football   Quinn Ewers passed for 260 yards and three touchdowns and No. 4 Texas rolled past Colorado State 52-0 on Saturday in the opener for both teams. Ewers connected with Matthew Golden for a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, and had another strike to Isaiah Bond as the Longhorns built a 31-0 lead by halftime. A big question for Texas heading into this season was just how quickly Ewers and Texas would find their rhythm in a passing attack that lost the top five receivers from the 2023 Big 12 championship team. Texas joined the Southeastern Conference this year.

Golden transferred from Houston and Bond from Alabama, and Ewers and his rebuilt receiving corps easily carved up the Rams. After a slow start that included a stalled drive and an interception on Texas' first three possessions, Texas scored 24 points in the second quarter. Ewers spread passes around 10 different receiving and had 248 yards passing by halftime. He completed 20 of 27 passes before leaving the game for Arch Manning midway through the third quarter. Manning's first drive started with a 40-yard pass to Johntay Cook II. It ended with Manning's first career TD pass, a scrambling 5-yard toss to Silas Bolden, another transfer from Oregon State, that made it 45-0. - AP College Football

Northwestern Football   Mike Wright led three scoring drives, Robert Fitzgerald intercepted a pass in the final minute and Northwestern won the first game in its temporary lakefront stadium, beating Miami (Ohio) 13-6 in the season opener on Saturday. Miami had the ball on the Northwestern 35 when Brett Gabbert tried to hit Reggie Virgil. Fitzgerald picked off the pass at the 25, helping the Wildcats open their second season under coach David Braun on a triumphant note.

They did it in a setting as unique as any, before a sellout crowd of 12,023 not counting the boats bobbing in the background on Lake Michigan. The stadium where they'll play the majority of their home games the next two seasons while a new home is built about a mile west has a bit of a high school or small college feel, albeit with a postcard view. The capacity is far fewer than at the old Ryan Field (47,000) and the new one (35,000) being built on that site, let alone other venues in the Big Ten. Wright completed 18 of 30 passes for 178 yards after winning a preseason competition for the starting job. The Mississippi State transfer also ran for 65 yards and a touchdown. - AP College Football

Iowa State Football   Rocco Becht threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another in Iowa State's 21-3 win over North Dakota on Saturday. Becht had no trouble spreading the ball to his receivers as he completed a pass to six different receivers. His top target was Jaylin Noel, who finished with 135 yards and a touchdown. This duo was also methodical in Iowa State's first drive of the game. The two connected for a 54-yard completion that was followed by a 21-yard TD pass to wide receiver Jayden Higgins. Becht also threw a 14-yard TD pass to Noel, and his 2-yard run in the fourth quarter finished the scoring.

North Dakota's Simon Romfo, making his frist career start after being a backup to the now-Michigan State quarterback Tommy Schuster, was 17 of 30 for 121 yards. Romfo led a North Dakota offense that ran for 174 yards and held a nearly 16-minute advantage in time of possession. The Fighting Hawks' longest drive came late in the first quarter. They went on a 23-play, 88-yard drive that resulted in a field goal by C.J. Elrichs. The drive lasted 12:24 and the 23 plays were the most in an Bowl Subdivision game since at least 2014, according to SportRadar. - AP College Football

Nebraska Football   Dylan Raiola passed for 238 yards and two touchdowns in his college debut and Nebraska beat UTEP 40-7 Saturday for its first win in a season opener in five years. Raiola showed poise throughout against the overmatched Miners and flashes of the flair that made him a five-star recruit and the highest-rated player to ever sign with the Cornhuskers. Both of his touchdown passes were perfectly placed. The first, for 59 yards, went to Texas transfer Isaiah Neyor, who was well covered when he caught the ball over his shoulder along the right sideline. Neyor stumbled as he pulled the ball in at the 12, regained his balance and ran into the end zone.

On his second TD pass, Raiola lofted the ball to the outside shoulder of Wake Forest transfer Jahmal Banks, who jumped to bring down the ball in the back corner of the end zone. Raiola had pledged to Ohio State and Georgia before he told Nebraska coach Matt Rhule in mid-December he wanted to play where his father, Dominic, was an All-America center in 2000. His long-anticipated first game for the Huskers brought 86,000 to Memorial Stadium, and he undoubtedly sent the fans home happy. He played one series in the second half and was 19 of 27 for 238 yards when he turned things over to Heinrich Haarberg. - AP College Football

Eastern Michigan Football   Cole Snyder threw for 241 yards and a touchdown and ran for another and Eastern Michigan beat UMass 28-14 in a season opener on Saturday. Eastern Michigan now has beaten the Minutemen for four straight seasons. UMass will join the Mid-American Conference next year. The Eagles scored first when on their second possession they put together a 10-play, 97-yard drive that ended when Snyder ran it in from the 1. Snyder threw a 32-yard completion to Terry Lockett Jr. for the longest play of the drive.

Just before the end of the first half, Snyder threw an 18-yard scoring pass to Oran Singleton who made an acrobatic over-the-shoulder grab in the left corner of the end zone for a 14-0 lead. Snyder connected with Lockett for 29 yards to mark the drive's longest play. UMass got back in it after forcing the Eagles to three-and-out to start the third. The Minutemen used a 10-play, 70-yard drive and ended when Jalen John ran it in from the 1. Eastern Michigan's Jesus Gomez kicked a 20-yard field goal with 4:49 left in the third, a 31-yarder with 7:49 remaining, and Delbert Mimms III ran it in from the 6 with 5:43 to go, and the two-point conversion made it 28-7.   UCLA Football   Joey Aguilar threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more and Appalachian State opened the football season with a 38-10 win over East Tennessee State on Saturday. Aguilar hit Christian Horn for an 83-yard score on the Mountaineers second snap of the season and went on to finish 22 of 37 for 326 yards. Devontae Houston scored on an 80-yard run late in the second quarter for the FCS Buccaneers before Aguilar capped an 80-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge as Appalachian State scored on its first three possessions and led 17-7 at the half.

A 34-yard TD pass to Eli Wilson, and another 1-yard Aguilar plunge were sandwiched around Makai Jackson's 47-yard run as the Mountaineers scored touchdowns on three-straight possessions to lead 38-10. Houston finished with 126 yards on the ground for East Tennessee State. Appalachian State outgained ETSU 500-305.   Cincinnati Football   Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brenan Sorsby had a strong first game in the Queen City on Saturday afternoon in the Bearcats 38-20 win over Towson. Sorsby threw for 383 yards and two touchdowns while adding two scores on the ground. The Bearcats took the ball to start the game and quickly went 75 yards for the opening score. Wide receiver Aaron Turner covered 49 yards on the drive, catching a short pass and sprinting all the way down to the Towson 16-yard line. Sorsby threw two touchdowns in the first quarter for 42 and 61 yards respectively. The Bearcats had eight plays for 20-plus yards.

Playing without defensive tackle Dontay Corleone, the Bearcats struggled to stop Towson's running game. The Tigers rushed for 194 yards on 5.2 yards per carry to keep the game close throughout. Cincinnati rushed for 275 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown run by Evan Pryor. After struggling to run the ball in the first half, gaining just 67 yards on the ground, the Bearcats found bigger chunks of yards in the second half. Special teams were a problem for the Bearcats, primarily in the first half. The Bearcats muffed a punt, had a kickoff go out of bounds, and kicker Carter Brown missed a 31-yard field goal. Michael Musaari, who muffed a punt in the first half, dropped another punt midway through the fourth quarter, but fell on the ball for his own recovery. - AP College Football

Dayton Football   Gavin Lochow caught a touchdown pass and threw for another and the Dayton defense forced turnovers on the last three possessions as the Flyers opened the season with an 18-10 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday. Lochow hauled in a 12-yard pass from Drew VanVleet midway through the first quarter to cap an 11-play, 28-yard drive on the Flyers' first possession. That score was set up by Gideon Lampron's strip sack of Nick Whitfield Jr. and fumble recovery. The Flyers converted on fourth down twice. A 75-yard punt to the St. Francis 1 when the defense swarmed Markell Holman on the next play for a safety in the final minute of the first quarter.

The Flyers opened the second half with an eight-play, 74-yard drive, capped by Lochow's 27-yard strike to Luke Brenner after he took a backwards pass from VanVleet. That made it 15-3 after the two-point conversion failed. Dayton's second lost fumble led to a 1-yard touchdown run by Markell Holman to pull St. Francis within 15-10 but the Red Flash's next three drives ended by fumbles on the Flyers' 5 and 32 and downs on Dayton's 36.
