Steven Krajewski, UConn's primary signal caller in 2021, transferred to Georgia State May 17, leaving the position wide open. Ta'Quan Roberson, who transferred to UConn from Penn State in December, seems to be the favorite for the job in a QB room packed with transfers. Roberson, a redshirt junior, played in three games at Penn State last year and completed 11 of 28 passes for 85 yards. He also ran the ball 12 times for 24 yards. "I knew who he was, because I followed recruiting," Mora told The Courant in February. "A four-star kid out of one of the best high school programs in the country. When he popped in the portal, this was a guy we needed to try to connect with immediately. We were able to get him in here and show him what the plan would be for h im and, I'll tell you, he's a really great kid. He's impressive."Roberson isn't the only new face in the QB room. The list also includes Zion Turner, a decorated three-star from St. Thomas Aquinas High in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Cale Millen, an other three-star who committed to Oregon out of high school before transferring to FCS Northern Arizona last year. Tyler Phommachanh will compete for the starting job after starting three games in 2021 before a season-ending injury. - Hartford Courant

Texas A&M wide receiver Ainias Smith had his suspension from the team lifted recently, according to Fox26's Mark Berman. Berman spoke to College Station lawyer Craig Greening, who is representing Smith. "I confirmed with Ainias himself that the suspensio n has been lifted," Greening said. "He can return to football practice. It shows the university believes in his innocence, that they looked at all the facts and they believe the suspension should be lifted." Smith in accordance with school and athletics department policy was suspended following his arrest July 20 on charges of DWI, possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana and unlawfully carrying a weapon. Greening told Berman on Friday that he had reviewed the facts and his client had committed no crime based on the information he studied. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

As Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst and his staff prepare for preseason camp, two critical questions about the team's running game remain unanswered: Will the Badgers be able to use multiple tailbacks to wear down opponents and keep the runners fresh? Or, wil l sophomore Braelon Allen be asked to handle and inordinate number of carries, as happened in the team's final four games last season? The ability of Chez Mellusi and Isaac Guerendo to return from season-ending injuries and the development of Julius Davi s and Brady Schipper should provide the answers. Davis believes Allen will have plenty of help in 2022. "We're going to be hard to stop, I think," he said. "There is a lot that we all bring to the table. We all push each other to be the best we ca n be, because we want to be the best running back room in the nation. "We're still going to be Wisconsin football. We're going to run it down your throat and then we're going to open it up and pass it. We're going to do our thing." Mellusi, Guerendo and Schipper were held out of spring ball so they could recover from injuries. Mellusi suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 6 at Rutgers. Guerendo's season ended when he suffered a broken foot in pregame warmups on Oct. 9 at Illinois. Both appeared to b e moving well in a video taken during summer workouts but head coach Paul Chryst noted this week the staff will work them in gradually in camp. Mellusi was on pace for a 1,000-yard season when he went down. He finished with 815 yards, a 4.7-yard average and five touchdowns. - Journal Sentinel

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst didn't say much at the podium Wednesday, but he did praise quarterback Graham Mertz's progress as a leader. "I've appreciated the way that Graham has approached this offseason," Chryst said. "He's taken ownership of the things he needs to do and does a great job of communicating and working with the rest of the players. "I think a good leader shows you how to lead by example but also how you can help others be the best that they can be. I've seen him do that." - Lincoln Journ al Star
