2022 ALL-MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM: DB PJ Jules, Southern Illinois, Jr.,...The Missouri Valley Football Conference announced its postseason awards on Monday, and Southern Illinois landed 10 players on the All-Conference and All-Newcomer teams. SIU defensive end Richie Hagarty was named first-team All-MVFC, while linebacker Branson Combs, wide receiver Avante Cox, fullback Jacob Garrett, safety PJ Jules and all-purpose back Javon Williams Jr. picked up second-team honors. 2022 ALL-BIG TEN FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL Jer'Zhan Newton, Illinois,...Newton had one of the best seasons by a defensive tackle in Illinois history to earn All-Big Ten first team honors. He leads the nation in QB hits (19) and ranks sixth in QB pressures (55), according to PFF. Newton leads the Illini in sacks (5.5) and is tied for second in the Big Ten in TFLs (13.0) with his teammate Keith Randolph. Newton becomes the first Illini defensive tackle to earn first-team honors since Mel Agee in 1 990. Michigan standout defensive lineman Mazi Smith has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, records show. The felony charge was filed Wednesday in an Ann Arbor court, nearly two months after the alleged incident, according to online records. Smith, a 21-year-old team co-captain from Grand Rapids, Michigan, had four tackles and one assist against Indiana on Oct. 8, the next day. No. 2 Michigan, which is expected to make the four-team College Football Playoff field for a second straight year, is pla ying Purdue in Indianapolis on Saturday for the Big Ten championship. A message seeking comment was not immediately returned by Smith's attorney. The 6-foot-3, 337-pound Smith had a tackle and three assists in last weekend's 45-23 victory over Ohio State . He has tallied at least a half TFL in eight of 12 games and at least a half sack in six contests. 2022 MAC VERN SMITH LEADERSHIP AWARD WINNER & OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Kurtis Rourke, QB, Ohio,...Rourke went 244-for-353 on 3,256 passing yards, throwing 25 total touchdowns in 11 games. The redshirt junior made program history against Fordham (Sep t. 24), going for 527 yards in the air, breaking a record that was set in 1983. He is also second in program history in passing yards in a season as well as passing touchdowns in a season. On the ground, Rourke net 249 yards on 74 carries and scored four touchdowns. 2022 BIG TEN THOMPSON-RANDLE EL FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Nicholas Singleton, Penn State,...Penn State freshman running back Nicholas Singleton was honored as Thompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year on Wednesday. Singleton was among 10 Penn State offensive p layers picking up All-Big Ten honors. Singleton is the fourth Thompson-Randle El Big Ten Freshman of the Year joining Christian Hackenberg (2013), Deion Barnes (2012) and Curtis Enis (1995, media). Singleton became Penn State's 37th major award winner fo r conference awards and the 11th in the James Franklin era. Singleton has 941 yards, averaging 78.4 per game and 6.32 per carry and owns the Penn State freshman rushing touchdowns record with 10, breaking a tie with Noah Cain (8; 2019) for the mark. Alle n currently has nine. He has has rushed for 100 yards in three games this season (179 vs. Ohio, 124 at Auburn, 122 at Maryland) and scored multiple rushing touchdowns against Ohio, Auburn, Minnesota and Maryland. McBride carried the ball just 16 times, good for an average of 17 yards per carry, an d also scored one touchdown. In the process, McBride established a new single season school rushing record with 1,713 yards, which is the most total rushing yards in the nation this season.
