2023 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jay Person, Sr., DL, Chattanooga,...Chattanooga's Person posted 53 tackles this season, with 16 of those going for lost yardage, leading the SoCon. His average of 1.45 TFLs ranks 14th in the FCS. Person leads the conference in sacks with 8.5 this season, ranking 20th in the FCS with 0.77 per game. Against Mercer on Oct. 14, Person had 4.0 TFLs, tying a career best. He also had a sack and a forced fumble in that game, leading to him being named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 16. Person's selection marks the 11th time a Chattanooga player has been named the defensive player of the year by the coaches and gives the Mocs the winner for the third straight season, with Person winning for the second straight time and Devonnsha Maxwell taking home the honor in 2021. - Southern Conference Football

Senior running back John Emery was absent from LSU's first practice of the spring Thursday morning. Emery, a former five-star recruit from St. Rose, returned for his fifth season this year instead of entering the NFL draft. Coach Brian Kelly said Emery has to meet certain academic requirements before he can practice. Emery missed the entire 2021 season and the first two games last year because he was ruled academically ineligible, a decision the NCAA upheld after an appeal.

"John is focused strictly right now on his academics," Kelly said. "He's got some marks that he has to hit from an academic standpoint before we talk about football with him. That was the deal with John and talking to his family. If his primary focus was academics and taking care of his degree, then we would have a conversation about football." Emery wasn't the only running back missing from practice. Fifth-year graduate student Josh Williams and junior Armoni Goodwin did not appear during a 20-minute viewing period as they recover from injuries. Goodwin won't be able to practice until preseason camp. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Jalen Rivers, who has played mostly guard at UM, again lined up as the first-team left tackle, while Chris Washington was the first-team right tackle. Left tackle Zion Nelson, who missed much of last season because of a knee injury, remains out for undisclosed medical reasons; Mario Cristobal has indicated he's optimistic that Nelson will be able to play this season. Rivers could end up starting at left tackle if Nelson doesn't win the job this summer, or if the Canes believe five-star freshmen tackles Samson Okunlola and Francis Mauigoa aren't ready for starting jobs. - Miami Herald

After joining the defensive line rotation as a redshirt freshman, Jacobian Guillory stayed there last year. He started twice, but he fell far behind the snap counts of starters Mekhi Wingo and Jaquelin Roy. Guillory finished with 14 tackles and one quarterback hurry. In his career, he has 23 tackles, two tackles for loss and a half-sack. This is a pivotal offseason for Guillory. On top of Wingo and Maason Smith, LSU signed West Virginia transfer Jordan Jefferson and Florida transfer Jalen Lee. They added depth, but there are available snaps this spring. Wingo (shoulder) and Smith (knee) are limited as they recover from injuries, giving Guillory and others the chance to assert themselves. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Former five-star linebacker Justin Flowe's career at Oregon was derailed by injuries. 'That's all in the past,' he says. 'All I can do now is focus on the future.' When Justin Flowe officially became a college football player in 2020, many thought by this point he'd be preparing for the NFL draft. Currently, the only thing connecting Flowe and the NFL is the league's shield logo tattooed on his right hand. But that could change if everything goes according to plan in the linebacker's new chapter with the Arizona Wildcats. Flowe's Plan A? The Upland, California, native, who played in Snoop Dogg's youth football league as a kid and developed the moniker "Baby Man," signed with the Oregon Ducks as a five-star prospect and top-ranked inside linebacker nationally.

Plan A was slowed down by a sequence of knee and foot injuries in Flowe's first two seasons at Oregon before he finished with a career-high 35 tackles in 2022, including four in Tucson against the UA. But Flowe clamored for a change of scenery and entered the transfer portal with hopes that Plan B could lead to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell saying Flowe's name at the draft podium. "I just see it as adversity," Flowe said. "Adversity happens to everybody, so (it's about) the way you get through it. I'm just planning now to thrive this year and be the best I can be. "That's all in the past. All I can do now is focus on the future." - Arizona Star News

  03/07/23 - TE Erick AllrSr/2024, Iowa + More +

Erick All, a former all-Big Ten honorable mention, had 38 catches for 437 receiving yards in 2021. A back injury that required surgery cut his 2022 season short. His 38 catches in 2021 were the most for a Michigan tight end since Jake Butt had 46 in 2016. "I feel like I'm more of a natural pass-catcher, route-runner," All said. "But I want to be all-around. I want to be a great blocker as well." Now, All is one of the top two tight ends at a school that has had a 50-plus-catch tight end in back-to-back seasons. "They definitely have a recipe with these tight ends," All said. All also has the benefit of already having a rapport with new Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara, who also transferred from Michigan after the 2022 season. "It's always great to have someone around that you're close with and have known for a while," All said. All and McNamara were roommates at Michigan although they are not living together at Iowa. "We grew out of that," All said. - Iowa Press Citizen

USC no longer has the nation's sack leader to lean on, and for a defense that finished among the worst in the nation in spite of Tuli Tuipulotu's presence, that's a scary thought. How the Trojans rebuild that pass rush will be a pressing question this spring. Could Anthony Lucas be the answer? A former five-star prospect, Lucas definitely looks the part at 6-6, 270 pounds, but he barely got on the field as a freshman for Texas A&M. USC is hoping a change of scenery could unlock Lucas. If it doesn't, the options on the edge are awfully limited. Romello Height is returning from an injury. Korey Foreman has yet to figure it out. It gets thin in a hurry after that. - Los Angeles Times

Kyle Whittingham expects that the next time you see Cam Rising, he will be starting for the University of Utah in the season-opener vs. the University of Florida. The Utes' head coach has been steadfast in that belief in the weeks since Rising exited the Rose Bowl in the third quarter on Jan. 2 with what was later revealed to be a torn left ACL. The opener will be played on either Aug. 31 or Sept. 2, roughly nine months since the injury, which falls in line with what is the general recovery timeline. Whittingham told The Salt Lake Tribune last week in a wide-ranging interview that Rising is on, if not ahead of schedule in his recovery, but there is another factor as far as the timeline goes that isn't being talked about enough.

Is Rising going to be ready for fall camp? If yes, will he be there for all of it? Some of it? Either way, how much of camp does Rising need to participate in for Whittingham to be comfortable putting him out there against the Gators? "To be ready for the opener, he has to get some reps in camp," Whittingham told The Tribune. "Maybe not necessarily the onset of camp, but by midway through camp, so we'll see how things progress. If he's not ready until a few days before the game, it's unlikely he would play in that game because he just wouldn't be completely sharp in all other areas." Utah has not announced a start date for fall camp, but FBS programs can practice 25 times over 29 days leading up to the opener, which would put the Utes' first practice on or about Aug. 2, eight months after the injury occurred. - Salt Lake Tribune

LSU will begin spring football practice next week. The team announced Wednesday that practice starts March 9, and it culminates with the spring game April 22 inside Tiger Stadium. LSU said "details and the format" of the last day haven't been determined. Spring ball provides the first glimpse of a team with rising expectations for the second year under coach Brian Kelly. The Tigers likely will be ranked in the preseason top 10 after finishing 10-4 with a Southeastern Conference Western Division title last season. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Syracuse football's starting quarterback Garrett Shrader will miss the entirety of spring practice after undergoing a successful procedure on his right arm, the program announced Monday. A source close to the program told syracuse.com that the procedure was specifically on Shrader's elbow. They could not provide more details on the procedure itself.

Spring practice starts March 21. The spring game is set for April 21. "I'm disappointed to miss the rest of the spring, but looking forward to rehabbing and getting ready for this upcoming season," Shrader said in the release. Shrader captained SU's offense in 11 and a half games this season, missing six quarters in November with an undisclosed lower body injury. It is currently unknown what his recent procedure on his throwing arm was for and when he suffered the injury that necessitated it. - The Post-Standard

There's good, and then there's an embarrassment-of-riches good. That's the state of the Michigan offensive line heading into the upcoming season. Michigan has won the Joe Moore Award in back-to-back seasons, getting a boost at center last season with transfer Olu Oluwatimi, who went on to win the Rimington Trophy as the nation's best center and the Outland, given to the nation's top interior lineman. The group helped the Wolverines average 238.9 rushing yards last season, ranking No. 5 nationally. Sherrone Moore, Michigan's offensive coordinator, who also coaches the offensive line, has built depth, adding three linemen from the transfer portal last December, and experience. Last season, because of injuries, there were five different starting-line combinations, with nine players making starts. Gone are Oluwatimi and left tackle Ryan Hayes, both participating in this week's NFL combine, but the transfer additions are LaDarius Henderson, Drake Nugent and Myles Hinton.

Among the experienced players returning are left guard Trevor Keegan and right guard Zak Zinter. Both assessed heading to the NFL and opted for another season at Michigan. Spring practice, which began a week ago and is paused while the university is on spring break, will be useful for getting some of the younger players, including Gio El-Hadi and Jeff Persi, who made starts last season, more practice reps. Also back are starters Karsen Barnhart and Trente Jones, who competed at right tackle. Henderson won't be able to practice with the team until the preseason, while he finishes his degree work at Arizona State, and Nugent and Hinton are missing spring practice while working through post-season surgeries. Henderson and Nugent are targeting starting spots in the fall. - Detroit News

  02/27/23 - CB Sevyn BanksrSr/2023, LSU + More +

Cornerback Sevyn Banks declared for the 2023 NFL Draft instead of returning to LSU, sources told The Advocate. Banks, a former Ohio State transfer, had one more season of eligibility. Banks transferred to LSU last spring after starting his career at Ohio State. He missed the first three games as he recovered from an injury, then Banks suffered a bruised spinal cord when he made a tackle on the opening kickoff Oct. 1 against Auburn. He did not play the rest of the season.

As a fifth-year senior, Banks did not have to formally submit his name for the draft by the Jan. 16 underclassmen deadline. He still made his decision around then, a source said. Though widely thought Banks had returned to LSU because he never made a public announcement, the team knew of his choice. Banks plans to participate in LSU's Pro Day next month, a source said. It'll be the first chance to see him work out since he was taken off the field on a stretcher after the kickoff at Auburn. He did not dress for another game as he recovered, and the former Ohio State starter is now trying to reach the NFL after two injury-marred seasons. Banks was a four-star recruit and the No. 221 overall player in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, out of Jones High School in Orlando, Florida. He appeared in every game his sophomore year at Ohio State before turning into a starter with early-round draft potential. - Baton Rouge Advocate

After Tyler Van Dyke's disappointing season in 2022 that ended with the Hurricanes quarterback missing most of the second half of the season due to injury, rumors swirled that the 2021 ACC Rookie of the Year could seek greener pastures elsewhere. That did not come to pass. Instead, the rising fourth-year signal-caller played an integral role in bringing more players to UM. Cristobal said Van Dyke even cut short a trip home to see his family to participate in a recruiting weekend, flying back from Connecticut to Florida to pitch the Hurricanes to prospective players. "A lot of guys," Cristobal said, "they would've ran to the hills...Instead, he was instrumental in getting a lot of these guys on board and signing them." Van Dyke finished last season with 1,835 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and a 63.2 completion percentage. He got off to a slow start before getting into a groove against North Carolina and Virginia Tech. However, he suffered an injury against Duke on Oct. 22 and threw only 16 passes the rest of the year.

Cristobal said Miami's offensive system under Gattis did not work with Van Dyke and UM's roster last season, especially once injuries began to take their toll on starting players. "Systematically, it just didn't fit," Cristobal said. "Those systems were phenomenal when we were at Alabama and at Oregon. The track record is what it is: They worked and they worked well. But when you're in a roster transition and whatnot, and it doesn't quite fit, you have to keep finding tweaks, and you've got to keep finding ways to make things work. And we didn't do a good enough job when the injuries piled up." - Sun Sentinel

The most anticipated quarterback competition in some time at OSU. It's at least a two-man battle between incumbent starter Ben Gulbranson and Clemson transfer D.J. Uiagalelei. There figures to be plenty of spotlight on 4-star freshman Aidan Chiles, too. Gulbranson checks the main box as to what a quarterback should do: win. Replacing an injured Chance Nolan five weeks into 2022 season, Gulbranson won seven of his eight starts. But outsiders would point out the position was hardly dynamic under Gulbranson. The Beavers' offense leaned heavily on the run game as the passing attack was pedestrian. Others push back, saying Gulbranson was an elite game manager, often calling the right play at the right time. It's hard to argue against 7-1.

Regardless, there's no harm to see whether the Beavers can do more at the position in 2023, which leads to Uiagalelei. During a three-year career at Clemson, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Uiagalelei started 28 games, completing 515 of 861 passes for 5,681 yards and 36 touchdowns, with 17 interceptions. Moreover, Uiagalelei is a run threat, as he produced 913 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns at Clemson. On paper, Oregon State has never had a quarterback like Uiagalelei, a former 5-star recruit who competed and produced for a perennial top-10 program. But he also had accuracy issues at Clemson, and eventually fell out of favor. Is a change of scenery all Uiagalelei needs to return to stardom? That's what Oregon State plans to find out this spring, summer and August camp. - The Oregonian

Michigan has won back-to-back Joe Moore Awards given to the nation's top offensive line and got a huge boost last season from the transfer portal when Olu Oluwatimi arrived from Virginia and went on to win the Rimington Award as the nation's top center and the Outland as the top interior lineman. The line helped Michigan's run game rank No. 5 nationally in rushing last season averaging 238.9 yards a game, and several starters from that line return - guards Trevor Keegan and Zak Zinter, who both strongly considered leaving for the NFL, and right tackles Karsen Barnhart and Trente Jones, who both made starts.

Michigan went to the portal again and added experience in LaDarius Henderson (Arizona State), who likely will replace Ryan Hayes at left tackle; Drake Nugent (Stanford), who is penciled in at center; and Myles Hinton, also from Stanford. They will get significant work in the spring as they adjust to the offense and expect the backups to also get plenty of reps, while Keegan, Zinter, Barnhart and Jones use the time to hone their skills. This will be the first spring that offensive line coach Sherrone Moore will be the offensive coordinator after spend the last two seasons as co-coordinator. - Detroit News
