Garrett Nussmeier threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth and No. 3 LSU easily beat Southeastern Louisiana 56-10 on Saturday night. The Tigers (4-0) erupted for 28 points in the second quarter to put the game quickly out of reach in only the th ird meeting between the schools. "We have a standard of how we want to play and I thought we upheld that standard," LSU coach Brian Kelly said. "There is no perfection out there, but there was definitely some progress." Up by a touchdown early in the sec ond quarter, LSU scored on back-to-back drives, on scoring runs of 2 and 10 yards by running back Ju'Juan Johnson.LSU's defense, which held the Lions (2-2) to 30 yards of total offense in the first half, forced a three and out late in the second q uarter. Nussmeier then drove the offense down the field, completing passes to Bauer Sharp for 6 yards and a pair to Barion Brown including a 17 yarder for a touchdown and a 28-0 lead. LSU finished the first half with an 8-play, 56-yard drive, culminating in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier to Zavion Thomas, extending the lead to 35-0. Nussmeier, who Kelly said has been dealing with a torso injury early in the season, finished 25 of 31 for 273 yards before exiting after throwing a 23-yard touchdown pass to Sharp on the opening series of the third quarter. With most of the LSU starting defense on the sidelines to start the second half, Southeastern Louisiana's lone TD came midway through the third quarter on a 14-yard pass by Carson Camp to Deantre Jackson. - LSU/AP College Football

Eric McAlister had eight catches for 254 yards and three of the career-high five touchdowns thrown by Josh Hoover as TCU beat SMU 35-24 on Saturday in the last scheduled game between the former Southwest Conference rivals that played for the 104th time i n 110 years. Hoover finished 22-of-40 passing for 379 yards, and now has 53 TD passes in his 22 career starts. McAlister's 70-yard catch-and-run score with 9:18 left put TCU (3-0) ahead to stay, and he added a 44-yard touchdown three minutes later. The l onger of those scores came three plays after Kevin Jennings' third TD pass for the Mustangs (2-2), a 34-yarder to Jordan Hudson gave them their only lead at 24-21.The Horned Frogs for now will hold on to a 54-43-7 lead in the "Battle for the Iron Skillet" that had continued since the SWC broke up after the 1995 season, except for 2006 and the pandemic-impacted 2020 season. Jennings finished 24-of-37 passing for 290 yards and three touchdowns, along with two interceptions. There was another impres sive catch by McAlister inside the 1 that didn't count, a leaping grab late in the third quarter while defended on a third-and-15 from the 30, though officials ruled his foot landed out of bounds. There was no replay review by officials, even though coac h Sonny Dykes called timeout before the Frogs missed a 47-yard field goal. It also appeared McAlister had a catch in the end zone late in the first half, but SMU cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson pulled the ball away for an interception instead of a touch down as they fell in the end zone. - AP College Football

LSU coach Brian Kelly said quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is dealing with a torso injury and probably won't be fully recovered until he can rest during the Tigers' bye week later this month. Kelly said Nussmeier developed the injury from throwing so much in preseason camp, and that LSU's trainers are limiting his work in practice as he recovers. "He's been slowed a little bit with a torso injury, and he's fighting through it, and he's getting better," Kelly told reporters Monday. "He's not going to be ab le to shut it down until the bye week."The third-ranked Tigers host FCS program Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday (7:45 p.m. ET, SEC Network) and play at No. 13 Ole Miss on Sept. 27 before their first open date of the season. "Come Saturday, he's good to go," Kelly said. "We've limited him a little bit during the week because of the tightness he's had in his torso. It's an upper-body injury, and you want to be careful with how many reps he's getting throwing the football. He's overcoming that, b ut we kept cut him down substantially." Kelly said he believes Nussmeier is on the "other side" of the injury. Nussmeier, who is considered a potential first-round pick in next year's NFL draft, is completing 65.1% of his attempts for 689 yards with thre e touchdowns and two interceptions. He ranks ninth in the SEC with 229.7 yards per game. In early August, Kelly revealed that Nussmeier was dealing with patellar tendinitis in his knee. Nussmeier ranked fifth nationally in passing yards (4,052) last seas on, his first as LSU's starter. - ESPN College Football
