Former Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz is transferring to Florida, giving the Gators an experienced starter at a depleted position. Mertz announced his commitment on social media Wednesday. He is expected to enroll at the Southeastern Conference schoo l in January. A three-year starter at Wisconsin, Mertz left the program after the Badgers hired former Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell to head its program. He joins a Florida team that lost Anthony Richardson to the NFL draft and dismissed backup Jalen Kit na following his arrest on child pornography charges. Third-stringer Jack Miller started the Las Vegas Bowl against Oregon State and threw for 180 yards and was sacked four times in a 30-3 loss. The Gators signed four-star quarterback prospect Jade n Rashada on Wednesday as a potential starter in 2023 and could mine the transfer portal for more help at the all-important position, where Florida lost Richardson, Kitna, Emory Jones and Carlos Del Rio-Wilson in a nine-month span. Mertz threw five touch down passes to help Wisconsin beat Illinois 45-7 in his first career start, setting a school single-game record for completion percentage and tying the school single-game record for TD tosses. But he struggled with consistency the rest of his time with t he Badgers. Wisconsin had a different offensive coordinator each of his three seasons as a starter. Mertz has completed 59.5% of his career passes for 5,405 yards, with 38 touchdowns and 26 interceptions. He completed 57.3% of his attempts for 2,136 yard s, with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season. - AP College Football

Illinois signed coach Bret Bielema to a new six-year contract through 2028 on Tuesday, a big reward for transforming a struggling program into a winner in his second season. Bielema, 13-11 with Illinois, gets a bump in salary from $4.2 million to $6 mill ion. The deal, which is pending approval by the school's board of trustees in January, includes various bonuses like a $500,000 annual retention incentive. He is also eligible for four one-year extensions if certain performance thresholds - which were no t disclosed in the announcement - are met. "I am proud of the progress we have made in two years and I could not be more excited about where our program is going," Bielema said in a statement. The Illini (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) are wrapping up their bes t season since the 2007 Rose Bowl team won nine games. They were ranked in the AP Top 25 poll for five straight weeks and made the College Football Playoff rankings for the first time. They're set to face Mississippi State in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Jan. 2 in Tampa, Florida, after finishing with losing records the previous 10 years. The 52-year-old Bielema, who led Wisconsin to three Rose Bowls before a disappointing run at Arkansas, is 110-69 in 14 seasons as a college coach. He is from western Illinois . - AP College Football

Offensive lineman LaDarius Henderson's goal all along was to declare for the NFL Draft after this season, but injuries have a way of altering plans and destinations. Henderson, an Arizona State captain this fall, missed the final six games because of a p ainful tendon injury in his left ring finger that froze it in a pointed down position and required surgery. The NFL took a back seat while he determined his next move. That involved the NCAA transfer portal, and after immediate interest from a couple of teams once he entered his name, Henderson called Michigan's Sherrone Moore, co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, to gauge interest. After all, Moore had coached the group to the Joe Moore Award last season as the nation's top offensive lin e and a finalist this year and had secured the transfer commitment before this season from center Olu Oluwatimi. Oluwatimi this month became a consensus All-America selection who won the Rimington Award as the nation's top center and the Outland Trophy a s the best interior lineman. With the Wolverines on board, Henderson committed earlier this month and will compete for a starting job after enrolling next month. "In my mind, Michigan is O-Line U," Henderson told The Detroit News in a phone intervi ew this week. "They have a good chance they might win the Joe Moore again this year. Olu transferred and had a great amount of success, and I really love what they do with their offense and what Coach Sherrone does there. So, I knew that if I had the opp ortunity to talk to these guys once I entered the portal, I was gonna reach out. "I reached out before I even gave them the chance to, and I'm glad I did, because once they were seemingly all-in on me, I'm like, 'Hey, I know what you guys are about, I lo ve the culture here, I love what you guys do you and I would love to be part of it." The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Henderson started 13 games in 2021 at left guard, but he's played tackle, as well. He started 29 games over three seasons. - Detroit News
