Indiana continued its recent run of offensive linemen being taken in the NFL draft Saturday. IU right guard Simon Stepaniak was taken in the sixth round (209th overall) by the Green Bay Packers. The 6-foot-4, 321-pound Stepaniak is the fourth IU offensiv e lineman taken in the NFL Draft since 2016, a list that includes guard Wes Martin (fourth round, 2019, Washington Redskins), guard Dan Feeney (third round, 2017, Los Angeles Chargers) and tackle Jason Spriggs (second round, Green Bay Packers, 2016). Spr iggs was cut by the Packers last year and recently signed with the Chicago Bears as a free agent.Stepaniak suffered a torn ACL the week leading up to the Gator Bowl but was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and impressed scouts and talent evalua tors with his strength by bench pressing 225 pounds 37 straight times. He's expecting to recover from the injury in time for the start of fall camp. It's been a long road. It started back in 2017, but it seems Troy Warner has finally reached the end of his recovery period that included three surgeries and multiple months of rehab. Now he's raring to go at any opportunity he can get. "There's obviousl y no words for how excited I am and how eager I am to just go out and show what I'm capable of," Warner said. "I mean, if I were to tell people what kind of goals I have set for myself, they think I'm crazy. But I really believe that I'm more than capabl e of achieving great things. I'm also excited to just be able to contribute to the team because you almost feel helpless when you're on the sideline and not being able to go out there and make plays for your team."On Oct. 21, 2017, during the East Carolina game, Warner suffered a Lisfranc injury. The defensive back had surgery as soon as possible, went through nine months of rehab, and then had surgery again to have some hardware removed. Warner then got back into action and played the entirety o f the 2018 season, but something was still wrong. The San Marcos, Calif., native played the whole season through pain and inflammation. Warner tried toughing it out, but eventually he came to the conclusion that his foot was not healthy. It turned out th e plates in his foot had broken and one piece got engraved into bone, so Warner had a third surgery to get the broken pieces removed. - Salt Lake Tribune

If the Miami Dolphins hadn't selected Tua Tagovailoa in the NFL draft last week, a different organization was set to take the former Alabama star quarterback one pick later. Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco confirmed on the Pat McAfee sho w that the Chargers would have selected Tagovailoa with pick No. 6 had the Dolphins instead opted for Oregon QB Justin Herbert with selection No. 5. With Tagovailoa gone, the Chargers drafted Herbert. "We felt great about both guys," Telesco said during the interview. "Actually, we felt great about all three quarterbacks that went in the top six.All three are going to be really good players in this league. Hopefully we don't pick sixth very often - if we do, I won't be making very many picks here - so if you're going to pick this high and there's a potential down the road franchise quarterback there that you like, you have to take him. And we were lucky to have some quarterbacks there in this draft that were really good players." Telesco had hea rd all of the rumors about the Dolphins and that No. 5 pick leading up to the draft - the combination of the talk about the team preferring Herbert over Tagovailoa and the reports the day before the draft about Miami being interested in trading up for an offensive tackle instead of taking a quarterback. Troy Dye has been losing sleep. But not over the NFL draft. Oregon's highly productive linebacker - the only player in program history to lead the team in tackles four consecutive seasons - was finally selected on the third day of the NFL draft by the Mi nnesota Vikings with the 132nd overall pick in the fourth round. Getting a new job continues a life-changing month for Dye, who became a father on April 7 when his girlfriend, Oregon track standout Makenzie Dunmore, delivered their son."This whole month has been a whole new adventure, and I'm looking forward to it because that's what life's about - it's an adventure, a new journey," Dye said during a Zoom call with the media shortly after being drafted on Saturday. Khalid Kareem's wait ended with the first pick in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. The Cincinnati Bengals made the former Notre Dame defensive end the 147th pick of the 2020 draft. Kareem is the sixth defensive end to be drafted during head coach Brian Kelly's tenure. He followed teammate Julian Okwara's selection by the Detroit Lions in the third round Friday. Kareem finished his Notre Dame career with 109 tackles, 26 tackles for a loss, 13 sacks and 25 quarterback hurries in 43 games with starts in e ach of the last 26. The 6-foot-4, 268-pound Kareem played through a torn labrum in his left shoulder, which he injured against Duke, in the final five games of last season. The wait is over for Laviska Shenault. After questions about his health and durability forced his first-round talent out of the opening round of the NFL draft, Colorado's standout receiver did not have to wait long to hear his name on Friday, as the Jack sonville Jaguars selected Shenault with the 10th pick of the second round (42nd overall). Shenault becomes the Buffs highest selection in the draft since both Nate Solder and Jimmy Smith were selected in the first round in 2011. Shenault is the 10th unde rclassman from CU to get selected in the NFL draft and the 273rd NFL draft pick overall that called CU home. He is just the second Buffs player to be selected by Jacksonville and the first since the Jaguars took former CU cornerback Chris Hudson in the t hird round of the 1995 draft.The Buffs enjoyed another big moment before Friday night's second and third rounds were complete, as speedy outside linebacker Davion Taylor went to Philadelphia late in the third round (103rd overall). "Definitely had first round hopes, but, I mean, at the end of the day it is what it is," Shenault said following the draft. "I understand everything happens for a reason, but I'm just ready to work, to be honest. That's really all there is to that." Miami coach Brian Flores' family is ready for Tua Tagovailoa to step in as the Dolphins' starting quarterback, but Flores said there's a long way to go before that happens. "I'll say my kids are expecting him (to start)," Flores said during an online pre ss conference after the Dolphins selected the Alabama quarterback with the fifth pick in the 85th NFL Draft on Thursday night. "They're big fans. They were excited to get on the phone call with him. But, look, we haven't even seen him, obviously, with th e pandemic and all that's going on. Our doctors haven't seen him, so we've a long way to go before we can say who's doing what. We'd like to just get him and have a meeting first."I think it's way too early to speculate on this year and how this i s going to go. You guys know we like to take a one-day-at-a-time approach anyway. That's going to be the approach I'm going to have him take as well." The Dolphins have two quarterbacks with experience as NFL starters on their roster. Fifteen-year vetera n Ryan Fitzpatrick started 13 games for Miami last season. College football's all-time passing efficiency leader is now a Miami Dolphin. The southpaw signal caller from Honolulu's Ewa Beach was the fifth pick of Thursday night's 2020 NFL Draft, and the first selection made by the Miami Dolphins. Tua Tagovailoa, the fifth quarterback in franchise history selected in the first round, brings a decorated resume to South Florida. The 6-foot, 217-pound quarterback won a national championship, played in another, and went 22-2 as a starter for the Crimson Tide. He thre w 87 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. He passed for 7,442 yards (10.9 yards-per-pass) with a 69.3 completion percentage. Those totals make up a 199.4 career passer efficiency rating, second to none in NCAA history. - MiamiDolphins.com

Lane Kiffin believes if Tua Tagovailoa was healthy last season, Alabama would have beaten Auburn. Granted, it doesn't mean much now. The fact this revelation comes a day after the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel changed a rule in what appears to be a direct response to last season's 48-45 Auburn win in the Iron Bowl is purely coincidental. He was asked how he would sort out the quarterback pecking order for Thursday night 's NFL draft, and the former Alabama offensive coordinator revealed what he believes everybody assumes."Because of (Tua's) injury, Joe (Burrow) is gonna go first," Kiffin said Wednesday. "That's a given. "It would be interesting if Tua wasn't stil l in that game against Mississippi State, so, obviously, he doesn't get hurt. He uses the bye before Auburn, gets healthy and they probably beat Auburn. I think everybody would say that. "They would get themselves in the playoff. Then, I think, they're p laying LSU. A little more than 24 hours before the biggest day of his life, Tua Tagovailoa has seen and heard a lot of the public aspersions of his game, be it the legitimate durability concerns or the manufactured critique that he's simply a product of Alabama's su perior offensive talent. How well-founded those concerns may be and what impact they have on the former Crimson Tide quarterback's draft stock as a potential Top-5 pick Thursday evening is not yet known, but Tagovailoa is doing his best to keep his head held high and focused squarely on what's ahead for him. "I think when you start to pay attention to those things, that's when things start to go in the wrong direction," Tagovailoa told the Montgomery Advertiser during a promotional interview on behalf o f Lowe's. "Now at times, I do see them, but it's all about what you do from there. You're either going to react to it or you're going to brush it off and keep doing what you do. I mean, I see it and some of it I hear as well, but it's what you do from th ere, what you do next (in response that matters)."A week ago, his intelligence was questioned when a faulty report about Tagovailoa posting a 13 on the infamous Wonderlic test - the score was from a practice Wonderlic taken as a sophomore - when i n reality he scored just below the average of 20 when he took the test in February. Former Texas quarterback Chris Simms has been among Tagovailoa's biggest critics, citing his less-than-idyllic height (6-feet), his arm strength and that his stats were t he result of the system and talent he was surrounded by at Alabama to suggest he might not be worth a Top-5 pick. Meanwhile, former NFL general manager Mike Lombardi and other NFL insiders reported at least two teams had failed Tagovailoa's medical evalu ation based on their own particular aversion to health risks after he was cleared to resume all football activities in early March following his mid-November hip surgery. Miami needs a quarterback. In fact, the Dolphins have needed a quarterback since a certain No. 13 decimated opposing secondaries more than 20 years ago. If it is up to ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit, the Dolphins will take another No. 13, former Alabama quarterb ack Tua Tagovailoa, in this week's NFL draft. Not that he's comparing Tagovailoa to Hall of Famer Dan Marino. Herbstreit, in a teleconference Monday, was asked by the Miami Herald about the idea of the former Crimson Tide star going No. 5 overall. "If he falls in their laps and they pass on him, I don't know how they do that," Herbstreit said.The "GameDay" analyst, who also said earlier COVID-19 comments were "misrepresented, did say he would be in the quarterback's best interest to sit the upcom ing season to make sure Tagovailoa is recovered from his hip injury. "Go back to when he burst on the scene," Herbstreit said of Tagovailoa. "Sat there his entire freshman year behind a very talented QB who won a lot of games, and halftime of the nationa l championship, they put him into the biggest stage that you can be in in the college game, and he's never been in that situation. And to watch him play, and he made a mistake or two along the way, but to watch him play with poise, his decision-making - the game moves pretty quickly when you play in that game - and eventually lead them back and make enough plays to win the national championship in overtime, and to visit with him on the back end of that a few months later, I think it's the culture, the w ay he was raised. - Birmingham News

There are several Colorado Buffaloes hoping to hear their names called during the draft, but Shenault is expected to be the first off the board. Throughout the history of the NFL Draft, CU has had 24 first-round picks, but none since 2011 when tackle Nat e Solder (No. 17 overall to New England) and Jimmy Smith (No. 27 to Baltimore) were first selected. Four CU receivers have been first rounders, with Rae Carruth (No. 27 to Carolina in 1997) being the most recent. Shenault, who skipped his senior season a t CU to enter the draft, certainly has the ability to hear his name on Thursday night, but his health has been his biggest obstacle. It didn't help his draft status when he aggravated a core muscle injury at the NFL Combine in February.Shortly aft er the combine, Shenault had surgery. On Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, reported that Dr. William Meyers of Vincera Core Physicians in Philadelphia sent a letter to all 32 teams about Shenault. "I watched Laviska go through regular football drills ye sterday at 5 ½ weeks postop and he looked terrific," Meyers wrote in a letter sent Tuesday. As the result of an injury that limited Jordan Mack in the postseason, Virginia football fans did not get one good last look at their elite inside linebacker. Fortunately for Mack, pro football scouts have more time for study. Mack was on the field for a handful of plays in Virginia's 62-17 loss to Clemson in the ACC championship game and did not play in the Orange Bowl, where Florida beat the Cavaliers 36-28. He finished the season with 69 tackles, giving him 289 for his career and putting him just out side the top 15 on UVa's all-time list. He almost certainly would have reached 300 if not for a 2018 injury that caused him to miss four games.His right foot was in a cast at the Orange Bowl but he had the good fortune to receive an invitation to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis at the end of February. "They were able to verify my numbers in terms of height and weight," said Mack, who is listed at 6 foot 4 and 230 pounds. "They were able to put my face to a name and see what kind of individual I w as. "I was probably 100% [physically] because the athletic training staff at UVa did a really good job of putting things together for me and still, to this day, keeping on top of me. Once hailed as USC's next great quarterback, JT Daniels is now in search of a new home. The former Santa Ana Mater Dei High signal caller, who started for USC as a freshman in 2018, will enter the NCAA transfer portal, the school announced Thursday. The decision, according to a person close to the situation, was made in anticipation of a potential NCAA decision on a one-time transfer exception, which, if passed, would offer Daniels immediate eligibility for the 2020 season. If Daniels were still require d to sit out next season, USC is optimistic that he could return. In a statement, the quarterback left that possibility on the table. "I love this university, coaching staff, and team," Daniels said. "To me it is in my best interest to explore all my opt ions going into the 2020 season. I will remain in contact with the coaching staff through the process. USC remains one of my options, and that door has remained open for me."Daniels had been the centerpiece of USC's future plans on offense. He ran away with the starting job as a freshman and won it again as a sophomore, as USC transitioned to a pass-heavy, air raid offense. But plans for a standout sophomore campaign were derailed after just two quarters in the season opener against Fresno State. Daniels tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, ending his season and paving the way for freshman Kedon Slovis. It's easy to pencil Journey Brown as Penn State's starting running back next season. The last time he took the field for the Nittany Lions he ran for 202 yards and two touchdowns on only 16 carries in their 53-39 Cotton Bowl win over Memphis to close out 2019. While Brown may have finished last season at the top of the depth chart, run game coordinator and running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider isn't ready to count anyone out of the races for touches. "I think (Brown and Noah Cain) are going to do a great j ob going forward," Seider said Tuesday morning in a teleconference with the media. "But be cautious. Don't count out Devyn Ford. ... I think he's a kid that you're going to see another whole level of Devyn going forward. ... I view all three of those guy s as starters in my mind right now."The trio of backs rushed for 1,627 yards and should see that number increase for a myriad of reasons. Cain and Ford should see improvement now that they've each and a year in the program, while Brown didn't hit his stride late into the season. "The last four or five games, and I know I'm biased, but I thought Journey Brown was playing as good as any running back in the country," Seider said. "He's got freakish athletic ability and strength that he's finally sta rting to tap into." Brown has shown the most production of the three backs, racking up 890 rushing yards to lead the team last year.
