06/02/20 - QB JT Daniels, rSr/2024, Rice + More +   Georgia's quarterback competition got a lot more interesting on May 29, when former five-star recruit and Southern Cal quarterback J.T. Daniels announced his intention to transfer to the Bulldogs. Daniels started 11 games for the Trojans as a true freshman in 2018, passing for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He missed most of 2019 after suffering a knee injury in the season opener. An immediate eligibility waiver is still needed for Daniels to be able to see the field in 2020. The depth chart listed above assumes no waiver for Daniels. If he receives one, he will vie for the starting job with Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman, who had been assumed to be the starter heading toward the fall. An approved waiver means three remaining years of eligibility, while a denial means two. 06/01/20 - WR Justyn Ross, rSr/2022, Clemson + More +   Clemson star receiver Justyn Ross will miss the 2020 season, and his football career could be in jeopardy. Ross has a "congenital fusion" in his spine that he's had since birth, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told reporters Monday. Ross is slated to have surgery on Friday. The condition was discovered on an X-ray after Ross felt stinger-like symptoms during spring practice. "Nobody to this point knew that he had that, and he's had no issues his whole career. Because of the situation when they did this X-ray, it showed up. Very concerned," Swinney said. "And he had a little bit of a bulging disc as well. And that is an issue. There's been many people play football with a surgical fusion. That happens a lot of times. "But we don't know of one that's had a surgical and a congenital" issue, Swinney said. Ross missed Clemson's final two workouts of the spring - a practice on March 11 and a scrimmage on March 13. The March 13 workout was Clemson's final one of the spring as the final six spring practices were canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Phenix City, Alabama native had 66 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns last season. 06/01/20 - WR Justyn Ross, rSr/2022, Clemson + More +   Clemson receiver Justyn Ross, considered a first-round NFL draft pick next spring, will miss the upcoming college season due to a spinal condition uncovered after he was hurt at practice in March. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said Ross will have surgery on Friday because of a congenital fusion of vertebrae he has had since birth. Ross also has a bulging disc. The condition was found after Ross apparently hurt his shoulder during a spring practice session before workouts were shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. "I was shocked," Swinney said. Ross is a 6-foot-4, 205-pound sophomore from Phenix City, Alabama, who led the Tigers with 66 catches a year ago. He first gained national attention as a freshman in Clemson's 44-16 national championship win over Alabama in January 2019 when he had six catches for 153 yards including a 74-yard TD. Swinney said Ross seemed fine after his injury and told the coach he felt good at dinner that night. 05/29/20 - QB JT Daniels, rSr/2024, Rice + More +   Georgia has picked up another high-profile transfer to compete for its starting quarterback job, landing former Southern California starter JT Daniels. Daniels started for the Trojans in 2018, but lost his job to Kedon Slovis after going down last season with a knee injury. He announced Thursday that he’s heading to Georgia, which is seeking a replacement for three-year starter Jake Fromm. Daniels, who entered the transfer portal in April, will battle for playing time with graduate transfer Jamie Newman, who left Wake Forest to play his final college season with a program that has been a consistent national contender under coach Kirby Smart. Daniels was among the top quarterback recruits in the nation when he left Orange County’s Mater Dei High School early to join the Trojans two years ago. But even after the NCAA tabled a possible one-time transfer exception last week, Daniels still made his exit from USC official. Daniels announced Thursday he will transfer from USC to Georgia after two seasons with the Trojans. With no transfer exception available, the former Gatorade National High School Player of the Year must presumably apply for a traditional transfer waiver if he has any hope of playing for the Bulldogs next season. His transfer marks the end of an up-and-down tenure at USC, where he enrolled in the spring of 2018 after skipping his final season at Santa Ana Mater Dei High. Even before his arrival, the five-star local recruit was lauded as a savior for a struggling football program. But after winning the starting job as a freshman, Daniels piloted an inconsistent USC offense to a 5-7 record. He threw for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. 05/28/20 - ILB Jake Hansen, rSr/2022, Illinois + More +   The Illinois football team can start returning to campus in less than a week. The first wave of athletes is scheduled to arrive June 3. While there was some initial excitement that a plan was in place to return a bit of normalcy to their summer, some of the Illini leaders are taking a measured approach to their eventual return. Jake Hansen's concerns don't lie with the uncertain nature of the coronavirus. The redshirt senior linebacker has more questions about what the voluntary workouts and training sessions will be with the team back on campus. "Am I going to be able to get the quality work in that I would be able to usually get during this time in the summer?" Hansen said. "If not, then I'd like to be at home where I could work out in my personal gym and do things where I know I'm going to be able to get the right amount of work and the quality of work I want to get in. If we are able to do that at Illinois, then by all means I'm going to be at Illinois as soon as possible. I think that's what it sounds like we're going to be able to do." "I actually deleted my social media a week ago," the Penn State tight end said Wednesday. If you see one of those too-soon NFL mock drafts projecting Freiermuth as a 2021 first-round choice, he would rather not talk about it right now. "I need to focus on my time being at Penn State," he said. "If I don't have a good season, it's all down the drain. It's just preseason hype." But if the conversation comes around to Freiermuth becoming the best tight end in the country, he knows what that takes and isn't afraid to embrace the possibility. 05/20/20 - QB Cameron Rising, rSr/2025, Utah + More +   When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down Utah spring practice in mid-March, Cameron Rising had an early leg up in the Utes' spring/summer quarterback competition with Jake Bentley and Drew Lisk. In hindsight, that was to be expected. Rising spent the 2019 season in residence after the NCAA denied his immediate-eligibility waiver. Instead of being eligible right away, Rising ran the scout team, while working with first-year offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. Rising even spent home game days in the Rice-Eccles Stadium press box to gain a better understanding of the offense and how Ludwig calls a game. "It's been great, something I don't take for granted," Rising told The Salt Lake Tribune via phone last week from his home in Ventura, Calif., which remains under a stay-well-at-home order through the end of the month. "How much I saw last season, it was mind-boggling at times how much work really goes into a game day. Seeing him call a game, experiencing that, I got to see how Coach Ludwig acts and I think that can only benefit me." Rising may have impressed in the early days of spring ball, but that means little anymore. At this point, the quarterback situation at Utah is unsettled. It will remain so until everyone is back on campus and going through whatever ramp-up and training camp is allowed ahead of the season.
