11/09/20 - WR Bru McCoy, rSr/2025, Tennessee + More +   After two years of waiting marked by a mysterious illness and a winding transfer saga, Bru McCoy was due a break. As it turned out, in his long-awaited debut Saturday for USC, he'd get two. Both of which would be crucial in securing a 28-27 comeback victory over Arizona State. The redshirt freshman wideout caught only two passes for 19 yards before the Trojans faced a fourth-and-13 with fewer than three minutes remaining. McCoy wasn't even the target when quarterback Kedon Slovis uncorked a throw toward the left corner of the end zone, knowing a penalty flag for offside against Arizona State had already been thrown. The target of that throw, Amon-ra St. Brown, was blanketed by defenders. But he managed to tip the ball into the air. Nearby, McCoy was conveniently waiting. As the ball fluttered in the air, McCoy snagged it. Then, he threw his arms up in celebration. "It felt great," McCoy said. "More than anything, just happy to be out there, happy to help the team get a big win. It's been a long time since I've been able to play a game, so there were a lot of jitters heading into the game." But those jitters were well behind him when, immediately after his touchdown catch, the freshman was among the Trojans sent to recover a desperation onside kick. McCoy had never practiced onside coverage before. When freshman kicker Parker Lewis delivered a perfect attempt on his first-ever try, McCoy thought he'd messed up his assignment. "I thought I could attack the ball," McCoy said. "I was kind of waiting for that big one up to jump up and go get it, but it stayed low. McCall completed 16 of 23 passes including a 9-yard scoring pass to C.J. Marable as the Chanticleers (5-0 Sun Belt Conference) outgained the Jaguars (3-4, 2-2) by more than 100 yards, including 236 yards on the ground, and the defense recorded recorded five sacks. The Chants entered Saturday's game with an 11-6 advantage in turnover margin to rank 21st in the nation, and a nearly 10-minute advantage in time of possession to rank ninth in the country. Bru McCoy caught a deflected 26-yard TD pass with 2:52 left for the Trojans (1-0), and Max Williams recovered the onside kick. On fourth and 9, Kedon Slovis fired a pass down the middle to London, and the two-sport athlete beat double coverage to haul it in for an electrifying score. Austin beat Eastern Kentucky 24-6 on Saturday. Stephen F. Austin (5-3) has a five-game winning streak, its first since 2011. On Monday, it was revealed running back Alex Fontenot, the Buffaloes' leading rusher in 2019, will miss Saturday's season opener against UCLA (5 p.m., TV: ESPN2) with an undisclosed injury. On Tuesday, head coach Karl Dorrell said there's no guarantee the 6-foot, 205-pound junior from Richmond, Tex., will play this season. Fontenot was injured in practice late last week. "It's unfortunate that he's dealing with an issue but it's not surgical, which is a good thing," Dorrell said. "He's gonna have to heal up. This is a short season and no one's losing eligibility this year, so we hope to have him back at some point this year and if not, then we'll have him ready to go next year in the fall." Uiagalelei offered a tour on Monday. The large "Big Cinco" medallion fits with the No. 5 jersey and goes back to his high school days at St. John Bosco in Bellflower, Calif., 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. "Someone just called me Big Cinco," Uiagalelei said. "I just heard the name. I said, "Oh, I like that. That's pretty cool. That's like a different thing." As the Seminoles prepare to host Pittsburgh Saturday, few players needed the time off than Travis, who left the field following the team's disappointing 48-16 loss to Louisville two weeks ago battered and bruised. Through the first six games of the season, including three consecutive starts, the redshirt sophomore has endured a litany of injuries to everything from his legs to his throwing hand and shoulder. "I think it was big-time help for him," FSU coach Mike Norvell said of the bye's impact on Travis. "He's played extremely hard these last three games, four games. He's done a nice job, but he's had some bumps and bruises along the way. 11/06/20 - OLB Charles Snowden, Sr/2021, Virginia + More +   Charles Snowden put together one of the most dominant individual performances of any ACC player this weekend. The linebacker finished with 10 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble in the UVa football team's 44-41 upset victory over North Carolina on Saturday. The stellar showing earned Snowden ACC Linebacker of the Week honors. "I had gotten off to a slow start this year and now to finally be producing and making plays, it feels great," Snowden said after the game. "Sacks always are a great thing." On the season, Snowden's sack tally sits at five. All five of the sacks have come in the past two games. After recording 22 tackles and one tackle for loss in UVa's first four games this season, Snowden posted 18 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and five sacks in the team's previous two contests. But those are relative terms for the Ducks this year as they replace the most experienced offensive line in the country, featuring Outland Trophy winner Penei Sewell, NFL Draft picks Shane Lemieux and Jake Hanson, undrafted free agents Calvin Throckmorton and Brady Aiello and starter Dallas Warmack. Forsyth is the vocal leader of the new starting five, significantly important since he's taking over at center, a position he's never played in a game. Yet only redshirt-senior Sam Poutasi has been at Oregon longer than Forsyth and only redshirt-sophomore Steven Jones has played more snaps, that's that's only 170 compared to 91. "I think Alex would've started at probably every other school in the country last year," said Ryan Walk, his roommate and fellow offensive linemen. "He was ready to play and if we needed to call on him last year he was going to be absolutely ready to go. I think that's a testament to him as a person and as a player. "He prepares as hard or harder than every single person on this team every single week. Whether he was with the ones, twos or threes he was going into every single game like he needed to start and play 75 snaps. He's carried that over to this year where he's a guy now, he's a leader and he's stepped into that role really well. The Chanticleers appeared at No. 15 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll released Sunday, a day after routing conference rival Georgia State 51-0 in Atlanta. The No. 15 ranking is the highest for a Sun Belt team ever, eclipsing No. 19 rankings held by Appalachian State last year and Louisiana twice this season.
