Some Syracuse football news most in Orange nation were expecting has become official. Cornerback Garrett Williams shared Thursday on Twitter that he is foregoing the remainder of his collegiate eligibility and declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft. Williams w as a three-year starter and a 2022 captain for the Orange. He appeared in seven games this season, battling a thigh bruise and then suffering a torn ACL that ended his season early. In the games he did play, Williams made 36 tackles and a sack, plus had two interceptions and a fumble recovery. A two-time All-ACC selection, Williams finishes his collegiate career with 152 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and 27 passes defended. He had four interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Williams is the second Syracuse player to officially declare for the draft. Sentencing for Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith, who had faced a felony concealed weapons charge and pleaded down to a misdemeanor charge during a probable-cause hearing last week, has been moved to Jan. 12. Smith was to have been sentenced Dec. 29 v ia Zoom in Washtenaw County 15th District Court before Judge Karen Valvo while he and the team are in Arizona for a national semifinal playoff game. An order was signed Wednesday to adjourn the sentencing and the new date appeared in online court records on Thursday. He will be sentenced under Michigan's Holmes Youthful Trainee Act. After Smith's Oct. 7 arrest, he left with the team and played at Indiana on Oct. 8.The senior co-captain has not faced suspension from Michigan since his arrest. He w as arraigned two days before Michigan's appearance in the Big Ten championship game on Dec. 3 and played. Michigan is now preparing for a national semifinal game on Dec. 31 in Arizona - Smith's original sentencing date was scheduled two days before. Smit h now will have a pre-sentencing interview Jan. 3 ahead of the Jan. 12 sentencing. If Michigan wins the semifinal, it advances to the national title game on Jan. 9. Also of note, the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL Draft is Jan. 16 and Smith is eligible to head to the NFL. Mark Gronowski threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third and top-seeded South Dakota State dominated fourth-seeded Montana State 39-18 on a frozen field Saturday in the FCS semifinals. The Jackrabbits (13-1), who have won 13 straight, head to Texas ne xt month for a Missouri Valley Football Conference showdown with third-seeded North Dakota State (12-2). SDSU beat the defending national champion Bison 23-21 on Oct. 15. Gronowski led South Dakota State to touchdowns on its first five drives with a bala nced offense that had 281 yards rushing and 192 passing. On the other side, the Jackrabbits' nation-best rushing defense (85.4 yards a game) held the nation's best rushing offense (331.8) to 52 yards.The game started with the temperature at 10 deg rees and the wind chill at minus-7. It was the coldest game ever played at South Dakota State. It was the third straight semifinal for the two teams. SDSU avenged a 31-17 loss last year at MSU. The teams swapped touchdowns on their opening drives and the n the Jackrabbits scored three straight touchdowns, shocking the Bobcats with two long scoring runs for a 28-9 lead at the half. Gronowski, who had a 36-yard hookup with Tucker Kraft to open the scoring, capped a 12-play, 69-yard drive with a 1-yard plun ge on the second drive. That gave him a rushing and passing TD in the same game nine times this season. The next two touchdowns were a 41-yard burst up the middle by Isaiah Davis and a 38-yard scamper by Amar Johnson on a field that played like a skating rink. Latrell Collier's 7-yard scoring run with 4:31 remaining gave NCCU the lead. The Tigers answered with a 15-play drive that included Sanders' 10-yard, fourth-down pass to T.J. Martin.
