When Alabama football receiver Jaylen Waddle suffered an injury last season, then-sophomore John Metchie III was forced to step up and into one of the main receiving slots for the Crimson Tide. Metchie played alongside Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith and was able to learn off his technique, especially as far as "minor little details," things only receivers work on or really notice, Metchie III said at 2021 SEC Media Days on Wednesday. But the most valuable takeaways, he said, came from just being Sm ith's teammate and observing him off the field. "Biggest thing was just worth ethic, bringing in your best self day in and day out and just being consistent," Metchie III said.Metchie III exploded into the national college football scene after he delivered a standout performance against Texas A&M last season. With Waddle's injury expanding his role, Metchie totaled 916 yards and six touchdowns on 55 catches. Metchie III continues to take after Smith and stress the importance of his mindset. Georgia quarterback TJ Daniels and Tennessee receiver Velus Jones were teammates previously at Southern California. Now they're both in the SEC and were at media days on Tuesday. Daniels, who graduated from high school a year early, said he spent the spr ing before his freshman season visiting practice. "I would come up to USC and spend the weekend or spend almost the whole week there to watch spring practice and try and learn, and I stayed with Velus," said Daniels, who is from Irvine, Calif. "So Velus and I have been really good friends since I was 17. He's just a really good guy." Jones said he and Daniels spent a lot of time together. "Me and JT, we hung out a lot, played video games together," Jones said. "He was always at my apartment. Couldn't ge t him out. I tried to kick him out a lot." - Northwest Arkansas Times

UTSA's Frank Harris has earned a spot on the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List, the Davey O'Brien Foundation announced on Tuesday. Harris is one of 30 FBS signal-callers - one of two from Conference USA - to land on the list of the nati on's top returning college quarterbacks. Compiled by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee, this year's list was selected based on career player performance and expectations heading into the 2021 college football season. All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at an NCAA Division I institution. A product of Schertz Clemens High School, Harris has played in 15 games and started 14 contests over the past two seasons for the Roadrunners, completing 225 of 341 passes for 2,116 yards and 15 touchdowns. He currently owns UTSA's career record for completion percentage (.660) and he ranks third all-time in passing yards, passing touchdowns and passing efficiency (127.9). - Texas-San Antonio Football

Ohio State tight end Jeremy Ruckert will attend Big Ten media days in place of star wide receiver Chris Olave, a team spokesman said Tuesday. Olave had been on an earlier list of Buckeyes players who were scheduled to attend media days, which is to be he ld in Indianapolis on Thursday and Friday. No specifics were given for the switch, though the spokesman said "all is good and there are no issues" with Olave. He participated in a photoshoot at Ohio State on Tuesday following a workout. Coastal Carolina redshirt sophomore quarterback Grayson McCall was named the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, as 11 total Chanticleers picked up Preseason All-Sun Belt honors, the league announced on Tuesday. In addition t o the preseason all-conference teams, the Sun Belt Conference also announced the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Football Preseason Coaches Poll which saw the Chanticleers receive six first-place votes but finish tied with Appalachian State with 44 total points atop of the East Division preseason rankings. The Chants and Mountaineers were in front of Georgia State (24 points), Georgia Southern (20), and Troy (18) in the East Division predictions, while in the West Division preseason poll Louisiana led the way with nine first-place votes and a total of 49 points. On top of being named the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, McCall was also named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt first team. The Davey O'Brien Foundation revealed the 2021 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list today, a group that includes Coastal Carolina redshirt sophomore quarterback Grayson McCall. Compiled by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection C ommittee, this year's 30-member list was selected based on career player performance and expectations heading into the 2021 college football season. All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at an NCAA Division I institution. Twelve of the watch list members, including McCall, are previous Davey O'Brien Award semifinalists, including a trio of two-time semifinalists in Miami's D'Eriq King (2018, 2020), Florida State's McKenzie Milton (2017, 2018), and Iowa State's Broc k Purdy (2019, 2020). After an impressive junior season, UNC Football standout Jeremiah Gemmel has been named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list. Over the past two seasons, linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel has been a standout performer for the UNC football program. Heading into his senior season, the Newnan, GA native is starting to receive some national recognition. On Monday, the Maxwell Football Club announced their watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award. Gemmel was among the 90 defensive players to earn placement on this year's list.Since 1995, the Chuck Bednarik Award has honored the College Defensive Player of the Year. The Award is in honor of Bednarik, who was inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame as well as the NFL Hall of Fame. Over the past t wo seasons, Gemmel has been an integral part of Mack Brown's defense. The Maxwell Football Club announced its watch lists for the 85th Maxwell Award, presented annually to the outstanding player in college football, and for the 27th annual Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the outstanding defensive player in coll ege football today, which included Coastal Carolina's Grayson McCall and Jeffrey Gunter, respectively. Both awards are proudly sponsored by Mammoth Tech and The Athletes' Corner, which are Executive Partners of the Maxwell Football Club.McCall was named the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year by the league's coaches and earned a spot on the 2020 All-Sun Belt first team and the 2020 Phil Steele SBC All-Conference first team last season in which he led the Sun Belt and ranked 10th nationally with 26 passing touchdowns on the year. Sun Belt Football Media Day is only a few days away, on Thursday, July 22nd, and the conference has announced that Georgia Southern football student-athletes J.D. King and Todd Bradley-Glenn will accompany head coach Chad Lunsford to the 2021 Sun Belt Me dia Day. Last season, the SBC accumulated an FBS-leading 21 non-conference wins in 2020, including a 3-0 record against Big 12 opponents. Two teams (Coastal Carolina and Louisiana) finished in the final AP Poll, Coaches Poll, and College Football Playoff Rankings for the first time in conference history. In addition to the conference's accomplishments on the football field, the conference boasted a 135 percent increase in TV viewership in 2020, with seven of the conference's games surpassing 1 million v iewers. Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III and defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis will represent the Crimson Tide at SEC Media Days. Mathis, a senior, and Metchie, a junior, will join coach Nick Saban on July 21 at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham-Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover. A newcomer to the Cardinals, Werts spent the offseason switching from quarterback to wide receiver. The Georgia Southern transfer has drawn rave reviews from his teammates and coaches throughout both spring practices and summer workouts. Louisville is lo oking for new playmakers on the outside and the 5-foot-11 receiver has the potential to be one of them for the Cardinals. He's a good athlete, as proven by his time at Georgia Southern. Werts ran for more than 3,000 career yards at quarterback with 34 to uchdowns. With his combination of size, athleticism and IQ that coach Gunter Brewer raves about, there's reason to be optimistic for Werts making a quick transition. Werts will likely start the year coming off the bench, with Jordan Watkins, Braden Smith and Justin Marshall the frontrunners to start, but if he continues his strong offseason play he'll be in the rotation. - Courier Journal

Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei announced Friday that he has signed with VaynerSports. Uiagalelei's news comes a day after the NCAA's new interim name, image and likeness policy went into effect. There are seven known Clemson athletes who have announ ced NIL deals since then. Instead of signing a deal himself, however, the Tigers' starting quarterback opted to hire an agency, which is also covered in Clemson's NIL policies, released Wednesday night. VaynerSports is a branch of Vayner Media, a social and digital agency started by Gary Vaynerchuk and AJ Vaynerchuk in 2009.The company expanded and launched VaynerSports in 2016 "to create an offering that featured great contract advisory, superior service, innovative marketing (and) endorsements, and mentorship in the world of business, branding, social media, investing (and) sports," according to its website. VaynerSports represents athletes like Leonard Williams of the New York Giants as well as South Carolina native and NFL free agent Alshon Jeffery and the LA Dodgers' Justin Turner. - The State

Justyn Ross became the first known Clemson athlete to utilize the new name, image and likeness bill on Thursday morning. Hours after the law went into effect, the Tigers' wide receiver took to social media to reveal his new partnership with a company cal led The Players Trunk to create his own merchandise. "Stay tuned throughout the year for more!!!" Ross tweeted. The photo included Images of a gray hoodie and T-shirt with Ross's name and image of him in an orange and white uniform. According to informat ion released by Clemson on Wednesday night, athletes are prohibited from using the institution's intellectual property, which includes its logo. The colors aren't trademarked by Clemson, of course, and since there are no other indications that the image is affiliated with the school, Ross is legally able to use the image. - The State

University of Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz jumped into the NIL waters Monday, unveiling a trademark symbol. Mertz - a redshirt sophomore who became the team's starter last season - tweeted the image with the caption "Coming soon..." College athlete s are set to begin earning money on their name, image and likenesses this week as state laws go into effect. NCAA President Mark Emmert told member schools last week that "interim solutions" to allow all student-athletes to profit from NIL opportunities will be in place by July 1 as the organization waits for a federal law to govern to be passed on the matter. Mertz has a Twitter following of nearly 25,000 users and an Instagram following of over 51,000 accounts. Sending 10 players to the NFL Draft is usually not a recipe for an encore. In Alabama's case, the defending SEC and national champion just might defy the odds. The Crimson Tide placed nine players on the 75th Annual AL.com Spring Football All-SEC team ch osen by the league's 14 football information directors. The offense that had five players taken in the first round of the draft - wide receivers Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith, quarterback Mac Jones, running back Najee Harris and tackle Alex Leatherwood - put three on the All-SEC first team. They were wide receiver John Metchie III, guard Emil Ekiyor and tackle Evan Neal.
