For the UAB football program, life without all-time leading rusher Spencer Brown has been successful. Debo and Skull are the proof in the pudding. The Blazers return 16 starters, seven on offense and nine on defense, and will have one of the best rushing attacks in the nation as they return their top two running backs from a year ago. DeWayne McBride and Jermaine Brown Jr., affectionately known as Debo and Skull, respectively, combined for 2,002 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground last season and are expected to lead the UAB offense with interim head coach and offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent calling the shots.

McBride had a breakout true freshman season on the Southside, accumulating 439 yards and 4 touchdowns in the truncated 2020 season, including a 71-yard touchdown run against Western Kentucky and a school-record 75-yard touchdown run at Louisiana Tech. He expanded on that last season with 1,371 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 6.7 yards per carry, and was named to the C-USA second team. - Birmingham Post Herald

Coastal Carolina football's Grayson McCall has been named to the 2022 Preseason All-America fourth team by Athlon Sports. McCall was previously named to both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele's 20022 Preseason All-Sun Belt first teams earlier this offseason. A Heisman Trophy campaign for the redshirt junior quarterback has begun at www.TheRealMcCall.com. A two-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year Award winner in each of the last two years (2020 and 2021), McCall set a new NCAA Division I FBS record in passing efficiency rating at 207.6 last season in 2021, eclipsing the previous two records set by Alabama's Mac Jones (203.1) in 2020 and LSU's Joe Burrow (202.0) in 2019. He enters the 2022 season as the active career leader in all of NCAA Division I FBS in career passing efficiency at 196.09.

The 2021 Blanchard-Rogers Trophy Winner, an award given out to the best player in the state of South Carolina, McCall ranked in the top-25 in all of NCAA Division I FBS in 2021 in passing efficiency (207.6), yards per pass attempt (11.92), completion percentage (73.0), passing yards per completion (16.32), points responsible for per game (17.6), passing touchdowns (27), passing yards per game (261.2), total offense per game (287.5), and points responsible for (194). - Coastal Carolina football

Kansas State football defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah has been selected the Big 12's preseason defensive player of the year in a vote of media representatives who cover the league. Anudike-Uzomah is a 6-foot-4, 255-pound junior out of Lee's Summit High School. Texas running back Bijan Robinson is the offensive player of the year and Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel is the newcomer of the year.

Kansas State had six players selected preseason all-league. Kansas had one, in senior defensive back Kenny Logan. Anudike-Uzomah is coming off a 2021 season in which he was named an All-American after tying for the national lead in forced fumbles per game (0.46). He ranked 11th nationally and second in the Big 12 in sacks per game (0.85). He tied the school record with six forced fumbles, his 11.0 sacks tied for fifth in school history and he enters the 2022 season ranked second nationally in career forced fumbles per game (0.33) and third in career sacks per game (0.67). - The Kansas City Star

Auburn wants to win games by running the ball to set up the run. Succeeding with an old-school approach starts with the offensive line-last season when healthy Nick Brahms was a stalwart for the Tigers as their center. However, too often, the line battled injuries and inconsistency. Brahms enters the list at number seven because he knows the offense and is battle-tested in the Southeastern Conference. Head coach Bryan Harsin can't afford another stressful season in his second year. Auburn has to win. Victories become easier when an experienced center anchors the offensive line.

A good center is always vital. It matters even more for Auburn since Bo Nix left the Plains to become a QB for the Oregon Ducks. Brahms returns for a sixth season. He redshirted as a four-star prospect out of Navarre, Florida, in 2017 and became the starter the following season. Brahms missed the Birmingham Bowl with a knee injury that required surgery. He also was a limited participant in spring football, which allowed Jalil Irvin to get valuable reps at center. Brahms was the fourth senior to proclaim his return to Auburn for a super-senior campaign. He capitalized on the NCAA's extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic. - Birmingham News

By the end of the 2021 season, BYU football fans were having a hard time telling who was on the field defensively without a roster in front of them. Two of the more significant injuries were to linebackers Keenan Pili and Payton Wilgar. Pili opened the season with a 17-tackle performance against Arizona but played only three games before a knee injury took him out for the year. Wilgar played in ten games and had a career-best 11 tackles against Virginia but suffered a torn labrum the next week and didn't play in the final three games.

Both players are co-captains, so their leadership was missed as much as their on-field play. Fast forward to this summer and both players are healthy and expected to make a huge impact. Pili is a 6-foot-3, 233 pound junior from Provo with 128 tackles in his career, including seven tackles for loss. He said the time he spent watching the game from the sideline after his injury was beneficial. Wilgar is a 6-3, 235-pound junior from St. George. He has 168 total tackles in his career with five interceptions and nine pass breakups. - Daily Herald

Despite boasting a league-high six preseason all-conference players, Kansas State was picked fifth in the Big 12 preseason football poll. Kansas State had a league-high six players named to the all-Big 12 preseason team, but that wasn't enough to convince media members that the Wildcats will make significant progress this year in the league standings. After going 8-5 overall and tying for fifth place with a 4-5 league record a year ago, the Wildcats were picked to again finish fifth Thursday in the 2022 preseason poll. Baylor - which finished at 12-2, tied Oklahoma for second during the regular season with a 7-2 mark and edged Oklahoma State in the championship game, 21-16 - is the preseason favorite for the first time in Big 12 history, ending a six-year run by OU.

K-State has high hopes for another step forward in the standings during coach Chris Klieman's fourth season with 16 starters - six on offense, seven defense and three specialists - returning and coming off an impressive 42-20 Texas Bowl victory over LSU. Leading the way for the Wildcats are defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, the league's preseason player of the year, consensus All-America running back Deuce Vaughn and all-conference offensive tackle Cooper Beebe. - Topeka Capital Journal

Texas Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley went into head coach Joey McGuire's office one day in late June and made a declaration: He has to make 13 personnel an option at times this coming season, because the team's tight ends "are three of our best guys." The Raiders are enthusiastic about the possibilities offered by returnees Mason Tharp and Henry Teeter and newly arrived transfer Baylor Cupp from Texas A&M. Tharp is 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds, Cupp 6-7 and 253, Teeter 6-5 and 240.

"All three have really good hands, they pose a problem for defenses because of their size," McGuire said, "and then the one thing I was really happy about with Mason is how physical he became during spring. He was a lot more physical from the beginning to the end." Tech operated almost exclusively in 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end) during the 2019 and 2020 seasons with David Yost as offensive coordinator. Last year, with Sonny Cumbie calling the offense, the Red Raiders continued to deploy mostly 11-personnel, but mixing in a good bit of 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends). Of the three Tech tight ends who played regularly last season, two-year starter Travis Koontz graduated, Tharp and Teeter are back and Cupp can be a replacement of sorts for Koontz. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Friday, July 1, Ohio State running back Miyan Williams was back at Winton Woods High School for the commitment announcement of rising senior Jermaine Mathews Jr. Mathews was just a freshman when Williams wrapped up his Warrior career in 2019. The bearded Buckeye is actually down two pounds at 225 on his 5-foot-9-inch frame but looks as chiseled as ever thanks to Ohio State strength coach Mickey Marotti's crew.

When Mathews arrives in 2023, Williams will still have two seasons of eligibility left due to college players gaining an extra year during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic season. "It's definitely a blessing he had an opportunity to commit up there," Williams said. "I'm proud of my boy. He's definitely a hard worker, a great player, a great addition to BIA. New Buckeye!" BIA refers to the Buckeye secondary proclaiming themselves as the "Best In America." - Columbus Dispatch

July 1 marked the official start of the Sun Belt Conference's expansion with James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss joining the conference. The official begin of the "new" Sun Belt marks the culmination of months of rumors, threats and drama that surrounded the decision for the four schools to jump to the Sun Belt. In 2021, three of the four schools announced they would be entering the conference following the 2022-2023 athletic seasons, while James Madison planned to join in July from the beginning. Things changed, however, as Southern Miss, Old Dominion and Marshall informed Conference-USA that they intended to also join the Sun Belt by July 1. The C-USA refused to accept the schools' departure and even released conference schedules for the 2022 football season including the three schools.

Marshall University then filed a lawsuit against the C-USA with the conference shortly thereafter agreeing to allow the schools depart for the Sun Belt early. In order to leave the C-USA early, the schools agreed to pay the conference $2 million for the early departure. Marshall, Old Dominion, Southern Miss and James Madison's move to the Sun Belt expands the conference's reach into new states, adding West Virginia, Virginia and Mississippi. "We are excited to officially welcome James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss as members of the Sun Belt Conference," Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill said. "This expansion to 14 members - and the regional rivalries it produces - makes the 2022-2023 academic year one of the most anticipated in Sun Belt history and signals the bright future that lies ahead of the conference." - The Troy Messenger

Five returning players most likely to put together breakout seasons in 2022: Charles Turner, junior offensive lineman,...The versatile lineman left spring as the team's starting center. For the offensive line to show significant improvement this season, it will be up to players like Turner to make a significant leap. First, Turner will have to fend off Marlon Martinez, who was injured in the spring. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Bru McCoy sat out his sophomore season after being accused and arrested of domestic assault. The case was eventually dropped, but McCoy left the Trojans for a second time anyway - in 2019 he departed Southern Cal and went to Texas briefly before returning. Since he had already used his free transfer, McCoy will need a waiver from the NCAA in order to play this season. If he does receive it, he could be a big boost to Tennessee's stellar offense. McCoy is a former five-star recruit and the No. 9 player in the nation out of Mater Dei High School in California.

"Bru (has a) big catch radius, great hands, is very smart, very knowledgeable of the game," Hooker said. "He works extremely hard. He comes in every day to take care of his body...He takes it seriously. He wants to be a pro about things, and that's how we expect him to be." Tennessee had one of the best offenses in the nation last season, despite being in the most difficult conference in college football. Among SEC teams, the Vols trailed only Alabama in points while finishing second in the conference in rushing yards per game and third in total yards. - Knoxville News Sentinel

North Texas linebacker KD Davis has pulled his name out of the NCAA transfer portal and will return to play a fifth season with the Mean Green. Multiple sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed Davis' plans to the Denton Record-Chronicle on Monday evening. Davis' decision marks the latest turn in a wild week for one of UNT's top players. "I want to thank you so much for the last 4 years of my football career and every accomplishment that has come with being a part of the team," Davis wrote. "The decision has not been easy, but I have decided to enter the transfer portal to explore my options to play at another level and show my talents in a different environment." Davis quickly became one of the hot commodities on the transfer market. He reportedly visited Ole Miss and Texas A&M over the weekend.

Davis has since deleted the tweet saying that he was entering the transfer portal. He had yet to post a statement on what went into his decision to return to UNT, but he did acknowledge a projection that he would continue his career with the Mean Green. The decision is a key turn of events for UNT as it looks to build on its fifth bowl appearance in six seasons under coach Seth Littrell. Davis has been one of UNT's top players in each of the last three seasons and was a first-team All-Conference USA selection last year. The former Ennis standout led the Mean Green in both tackles with 121 and tackles for loss with 13 in 2021. - Denton Record

One of Penn State's best players in its 2022 class was an offensive tackle, making this an easy choice. Shelton is long and lean at 6-foot-5, 275 pounds but is a great athlete for a tackle. His frame should allow for him to gain the weight needed to play tackle. That's a good thing, because he may need to add 50 pounds to be able to play in the Big Ten. Shelton could play either tackle position, but his length means he'll likely stick on the left side in the long term, protecting the quarterback's blind side. He's not going to contribute as a freshman - and it's unlikely he even does as a redshirt freshman in 2023 - but Shelton's addition to the program means Penn State has a potential building block on the offensive line in the long run. Those types of players are not easy to find, increasing his value to the team even more. - Centre Times
