There are going to be a host of newcomers on Kansas football's roster this fall. The Jayhawks announced some of those additions in the 2023 signing class in December. They announced more over the course of the past two-plus weeks. And those prospects, from the high school and college levels, covered a wide range of positions that address different needs Kansas has as it prepares for another run at a bowl game this upcoming college football season. Among the many topics head coach Lance Leipold addressed last week, he specifically addressed the recruitments of a number of the newcomers. Three in that group were Damarius McGhee, Jacoby Davis and Damon Greaves. And here's more on what Leipold had to say about them and how they fit into the Jayhawks' future.

McGhee was a 247Sports Composite four-star prospect out of high school, and according to 247Sports, the LSU transfer is a three-star talent out of the portal. It may not have worked out for McGhee at LSU, where he spent the first two years of his college career. There, he appeared in 13 games across two seasons and redshirted in 2022. But if it works out at Kansas, the Jayhawks are getting one of the top talents at the cornerback position from the 2021 recruiting class. Leipold said McGhee has great cover skills and his addition is a chance for the team to get better. "In fact, when I was on the road here last week I ran into a coach from (McGhee's) former school," said Leipold, speaking Feb. 1, "and he had nothing but positive things about (McGhee). And if (McGhee) stays healthy and does the things that he needs to, he doesn't see any reason why that (McGhee) won't be a fine addition and help this team." - Topeka Capital Journal

Florida State football coach Mike Norvell, whose team ended last season with a six-game winning streak, was rewarded with a three-year contract extension that will pay him an average of $8.05 million annually through 2029. The school released the contract Wednesday. It will pay Norvell $5.6 million in 2023, $7.6 million in 2024, $7.8 million in 2025, $8.1 million in 2026, $8.3 million in 2027, $8.6 million in 2028 and $8.8 million in 2029. He also gets a $250,000 retention bonus if he's still employed every Dec. 31. Norvell earned $4.5 million last year and would have made $7.25 million in the final year of his previous deal.

This is the second extension for Norvell, who was hired after the 2019 season. The Seminoles added a year to his contract following the 2021 season. FSU finished 10-3 last season and ranked No. 11 in the final AP college football poll. The Seminoles beat Florida State and Miami - and scored at least 45 points against both in-state rivals in the same season for the first time. FSU also was the only team to lead its conference in both total offense and total defense. Along with Southeastern Conference heavyweights Alabama and Georgia, FSU was one of three teams to rank in the top 15 in yards per play on both sides of the ball. "Coach Norvell has re-established a culture that the entire Seminole Family can appreciate," athletic director Michael Alford said in a statement. "We are proud of the way Coach Norvell, his staff and his team represent Florida State University on and off the field." - AP College Football

Utah announced its four captains for spring ball on Monday, naming quarterback Cameron Rising and tight end Brant Kuithe as the offensive captains, and safety Cole Bishop and linebacker Karene Reid as the defensive captains. Rising returns for his third full season as Utah's starting quarterback. He's led the Utes to back-to-back Pac-12 championships as a starter. He threw for 3,034 and 26 touchdowns last season. - Deseret News

Texas A&M wide receiver and punt returner Ainias Smith is returning for a fifth season, according to Smith's father, Maurice Smith. Ainias Smith later announced his decision on social media Thursday. "I have made many prayers and have had a plethora of thoughts, but after everything, I had to make an important decision that will set up my future," Smith said on the post. "With that being said, I will be returning to school for one more year. Aggie nation, let's run it back."

Smith spent the last several months weighing his options as he worked to rehabilitate a leg fracture suffered during the Aggies' 23-21 win over Arkansas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sept. 24. He had until Saturday to decide if he wanted to enter this year's NFL draft. His social media post Thursday included a video of Smith running drills on a what appears to be a healed leg. It concludes with Smith tossing A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher a football and telling him, "Let's run it back." Smith has 127 receptions for 1,612 yards and 17 touchdowns in four years at A&M. Shedeur Sanders had yet to play his final game at Jackson State before Fox Sports in December labeled him as a favorite to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy for Colorado. Throwing that type of hype on Sanders right away might be a bit much, but the fact that CU has a quarterback being talked about nationally is rare and it's a big deal for the Pac-12 Conference. "The conference will have the greatest collection of quarterbacks going into the season, as far as athletes ready to make sure their universities are in contention," Merton Hanks, the Pac-12's senior associate commissioner for football operations, said to BuffZone in a recent interview.

Without having played a snap at the FBS level, Sanders may not be at the top of that list yet, but he's one of the most intriguing quarterbacks in the country going into next season. In two seasons at Jackson State, Sanders threw for 6,963 yards, 70 touchdowns and only 14 interceptions. He added nine rushing touchdowns, including six this past season. In 2022, he ranked third in the FCS in passing touchdowns (40) and fourth in passing yards (3,732) and completion percentage (70.6%). "I'm looking forward to seeing Shedeur against the Pac-12 defenses," Hanks said. "That's going to be something that I'll be certainly paying close attention to." - Daily Camera

Fifth-year senior and safety Otis Reese transferred from the University of Georgia but came to Ole Miss his junior year and played three seasons with the Rebels. Reese was smooth with his hands and can get in contact with the ball without drawing flags. For the Rebels, he showed natural balance, quick feet, excellent awareness and was skilled at reading routes and quarterbacks. Reese showed great talent during his final year as an Ole Miss Rebel and is a promising prospect for the 2023 NFL Draft. - Daily Mississippian

Cade McNamara was not only the highest-profile addition at Iowa this winter, but one of the highest-profile additions via the transfer portal across the country. The former Michigan quarterback lost the starting job to J.J. McCarthy in 2022, but he was a third-team all-Big Ten honoree on a 2021 team that went to the College Football Playoff. McNamara completed 63 percent of his passes and threw 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his Michigan career. Iowa also added ex-Wisconsin quarterback Deacon Hill from the portal. Hill appeared in one game with the Badgers but did not attempt a pass.

It's no secret McNamara is the presumed No. 1 quarterback next year, barring unforeseen circumstances. "Cade is going to be - well, we'll see how Joe and the rest of the guys do - but Cade's likely going to be our quarterback next year," Petras said last month. As McNamara recovers from knee surgery, Labas and Hill should have no shortage of spring practice reps. The biggest question facing McNamara will be how much support will he have around him. He has two tight ends who could potentially play in the NFL, but question marks remain at wide receiver, offensive line and play-calling. - The Gazette

Kansas football made the additions of 13 transfers to the Jayhawks' 2023 roster Tuesday. There are six newcomers on defense, spread across each level of the unit. Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman is not expected to play baseball for the Aggies this spring, head coach Jim Schlossnagle confirmed Tuesday. Weigman moved into the starting quarterback role for the Aggies midway through the season this fall and with the departure of quarterback Haynes King by way of transfer has the edge on keeping the job next season. The Aggies also return transfer quarterback Max Johnson next season.

Weigman played in five games for the football team this season, throwing for 896 yards and eight touchdowns. The true freshman completed 73 of 132 passes. Weigman played shortstop for Bridgeland High School and was rated the 40th overall prospect in the state of Texas and 11th in his position in the class of 2022, according to Perfect Game. He was recruited to A&M as a two-sport athlete but did not play baseball last spring as an early enrollee while he integrated himself into the football program. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Less than a month after entering the NCAA transfer portal, Utah running back Micah Bernard is reportedly returning to the Utah Utes' football program. UteZone's Steve Bartle first reported Friday that the 6-foot, 202-pound Bernard will withdraw from the portal and return to Utah, and KSL Sports later reported the same, saying that "things are moving in a positive direction" for Bernard to stick with the Utes.

While Bernard did not officially make a statement regarding any decision, he later appeared to confirm the news when on his Instagram story he shared a headline from a Utah fan page that read, "Micah Bernard is returning to Utah for the 2023 season." Bernard has started 12 games over the past two seasons for Utah, including one at cornerback in the 2022 Rose Bowl when Utah had injury limitations at the position. In four seasons with the Utes' program, Bernard has rushed for 1,136 yards and six touchdowns, while also catching 64 passes for 590 yards and three touchdowns. - Deseret News

Jake Orlando tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the spring of 2018, wiping out his final season of playing football at Williamsville North. The 6-6, 245-pound tight end didn't think he'd have another opportunity to play football. However, the University of Massachusetts reached out to Orlando in the spring of his senior year as he prepared play a post-graduate season of football at a prep school. Instead, he accepted a scholarship to UMass. Orlando plans to return to Western New York and join the University at Buffalo football program as a graduate transfer in June after he graduates from UMass. Orlando announced his commitment to the Buffalo Bulls earlier this week on social media. - Buffalo News

When it comes to quarterbacks, the transfer portal giveth and the transfer portal taketh away. The Iowa football team gained two quarterbacks from the portal and lost two quarterbacks to the portal. The turnover, along with Spencer Petras' shoulder injury, means Iowa's quarterback room will look significantly different in 2023. Gone: Alex Padilla and Carson May were Iowa's two departures via the transfer portal at quarterback. Padilla appeared in 13 games in an Iowa uniform since 2020 and completed 49 percent of his passes while throwing three touchdowns and four interceptions. May, a true freshman, did not see any game action in his lone season in Iowa City.

Who is back: Joe Labas is expected to return for his sophomore year after making his collegiate debut in the 2022 Music City Bowl. Labas went 14-for-24 with one touchdown and no interceptions despite practicing almost exclusively on the scout team until bowl prep began. Spencer Petras is staying with the Hawkeyes at least through the spring as he rehabs his shoulder. He tore his rotator cuff and labrum in his throwing shoulder in Iowa's Nov. 25 loss to Nebraska. - The Gazette

Mmm, what might this mean for Arizona quarterback Drew Pyne, a redshirt sophomore who recently transferred from Notre Dame? ASU is favored to land former Florida quarterback signee Jaden Rashada, according to recent odds. Bookies.com has the Sun Devils at +140 to land Rashada, a 5-star QB whose father, Harlen, played at Arizona State. It gives the team a 41.67% implied probability to be the Pittsburg (Calif.) High standout's next school. TCU is second in the odds at +180 (35.71%), followed by Washington at +400 (20%) and California at +1000 (9.09%). The site lists "Other" at +2000 (4.76%) in its odds. Rashada reportedly visited Arizona State last weekend after being officially released form his letter of intent at Florida. He is scheduled to also visit TCU.

Rashada is the No. 6 QB prospect in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports. His father played at ASU between 1992 and 1994. New ASU coach Kenny Dillingham recruited Rashada when Dillingham was Oregon's offensive coordinator. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Jaden Rashada threw for 5,275 yards at Pittsburg High last season, with 59 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He had a falling out with Florida after the Gator Collective - an independent fundraising group that is loosely tied to the university and pays student-athletes for use of their name, image and likeness - failed to honor a four-year deal worth more than $13 million. Pyne threw for 2,021 yads with 22 touchdowns for Notre Dame while compiled an 8-2 record as a starter, including a 4-1 record against top 25 teams. - CalBears.com

Tennessee gave coach Josh Heupel a big raise that puts him among the highest-paid coaches in college football after he led the Volunteers to their best season in more than 20 years. Heupel will make $9 million per year through the 2028 football season under the contract extension announced by the school Tuesday and signed Jan. 19. That's an increase from the $5 million extension signed last July that pushed his deal through 2027. Athletic director Danny White said Heupel's results speak for themselves with an 18-8 record, including 11-2 last season, capped by a win over Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

White said Heupel and his staff have energized the program and fans with his aggressive style of football. "We just needed an innovative leader like Josh Heupel to reignite the spark," White said of program that dealt with what he called a brief period of dormancy. "It’s been fun to crash the party, but as Josh said after our Orange Bowl triumph, the best is yet to come." The Vols have beaten seven Top 25 teams since Heupel was hired in January 2021, which ranks third nationally among FBS head coaches in that span. Tennessee went 3-7 in 2020 before Heupel was hired to replace Jeremy Pruitt. Tennessee finished Heupel's second season ranked sixth by The Associated Press college football poll, the Vols' highest finish since 2001. Three South Carolina seniors with eligibility remaining aren't expected back in 2023. Head coach Shane Beamer told reporters on Saturday he doesn't anticipate receiver/tight end Chad Terrell or offensive linemen Hank Manos and Wyatt Campbell will return for another season, despite having varying amounts of eligibility available.

All three walked during senior day festivities on Nov. 19 prior to the win over Tennessee. "They're not involved in our workouts right now," Beamer said. "But great young men and want to certainly wish them well and (thank them) for everything they did for Gamecock football, as well." Terrell, a high-three-star recruit in the 2017 class, battled injuries and position changes throughout his Gamecocks career. The Mississippi product tore an ACL three times over five-plus years in Columbia - once in 2018, again in 2020 and finally during fall camp in 2022. Despite that, he appeared in 27 contests, working at both tight end and receiver. He recorded seven career receptions for 76 yards.
