Luther Burden III had touchdowns on the ground and through the air, Missouri kept Vanderbilt's offense off the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter, and the Tigers held on for a nerve-wracking 17-14 victory Saturday. Mike Wright, who took over when Commodores quarterback AJ Swann left with an illness, found Gamarian Carter for an 80-yard touchdown reception with 3:59 to go, and Vanderbilt's first offensive points in more than eight quarters gave Clark Lea's team a chance of ending a 24-game conference losing streak. Vanderbilt (3-5, 0-4) got the ball back with just under 3 minutes to go and got a quick first down after a penalty. But a third-down throw to Ben Bresnahan that appeared to give the Commodores a first down was moved back a yard on review, bringing up fourth-and-1, and Ray Davis was stuffed at the line of scrimmage to effectively end the game.

Brady Cook had 211 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception, and Cody Schrader came off the bench to run 14 times for 84 yards, as the Tigers (3-4, 1-4 SEC) beat Vanderbilt for the sixth time in the last seven meetings. The Tigers needed just six plays to take a 7-0 lead when Burden followed a 29-yard catch by Barrett Banister with a 35-yard TD reception. But that offensive efficiency was in short supply for both teams most of the game. The Commodores missed a field goal wide left. Then, just before halftime, Swann threw an interception in the Missouri end zone. At one point in between, the two teams combined to go three-and-out on five straight drives. Missouri finally ended the dubious streak when Burden scored from 10 yards out, and Harrison Mevis capped an expertly run 2-minute drill by tacking on a 39-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 17-0 lead at the break. - Missouri/AP College Football

The Missouri Tigers made it a clear priority to get wide receiver Luther Burden III more involved in the team's final tuneup before entering SEC play, and the move paid immediate dividends in Saturday's 34-17 victory over Abilene Christian. After the Tigers' defense forced a three-and-out on the Wildcats' opening drive of the game, Burden received the ensuing punt on a bounce along the left sideline at his own 22-yard line, then followed his blockers across the field before racing down the right stripe for a 78-yard score. That was exactly the spark the Tigers (2-1) were hoping for from Burden, according to quarterback Brady Cook. "That's huge when you open up the game with that," Cook said. "It just gives us a layer of confidence going out for that first drive, so it was huge." The Tigers struggled finding ways to get Burden the ball a week ago in a 40-12 loss at Kansas State when he finished with just two touches for 9 yards.

Coach Eliah Drinkwitz on Saturday inserted the freshman in as a punt returner and wildcat quarterback as a means of getting Burden more touches. Late in the first quarter, Burden returned a punt 22 yards before a hard tackle from Wildcats punter Logan Burke, who grabbed Burden by the shoulder pads in pulling him toward the sideline. There was no foul on the play after officials picked up a flag for a facemask penalty, but Burden left for the locker room after an examination on the sideline. He returned in the second quarter showing no ill effects, however, finishing the contest with 177 all-purpose yards. - Ball State/AP College Football

Heralded recruit Luther Burden III reached the end zone twice in his debut, Missouri's new-look defense showed progress against Louisiana Tech, and the Tigers rolled to a 52-24 victory over the Bulldogs on Thursday night at Faurot Field. Joseph Charleston returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown, and Brady Cook, who won the starting job early in fall camp for Missouri, threw for 196 yards with an interception and a touchdown run. Cody Schrader, Nathaniel Peat and BJ Harris also had touchdown runs for the Tigers.

Yet it was Burden, the five-star prospect from St. Louis, who delivered on the hype. He caught a swing pass from Cook before making one defender miss and splitting two more for his first score, then he took a direct snap and ran for another. Burden's only real gaffe came on a sharp throw that bounced off his hands for an interception. Louisiana Tech's Matthew Downing threw for 184 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions in new coach Sonny Cumbie's version of the Air Raid offense. Downing didn't get much help from the Bulldogs' ground game, though, which ran 22 times for 11 yards against what was one of the worst rush defenses in the Football Bowl Subdivision last season. - Missouri/AP College Football

Asked to describe the football player Luther Burden III, Missouri receivers coach Jacob Peeler didn't describe Burden playing football. "We were doing a dodgeball tournament one day," Peeler said Sunday. "A team-development thing. Whether it's dodgeball or football, he just likes to compete...I think the one thing that I saw in the spring is just his competitive character." As for a scouting report on Burden's dodgeball acumen, Peeler described what stood out in a word: "Elusiveness."

Camp opens Monday and Burden, a freshman, will leap for passes both at practice and in the daydreams of alums in cubicles across the state. Mizzou has the No. 1 wide receiver in the class of 2022 - and he's from St. Louis, too - and there is this belief that the Tigers surely have college football's next D.K. Metcalf. Doesn't hurt that the Tigers already have Metcalf's collegiate receivers coach in, yep, Peeler (oh, and A.J. Brown's receivers coach, too). Burden was a consensus five-star recruit from East St. Louis High who was Rivals Illinois High School Player of the Yar. As a senior he caught 71 passes for 1,174 yards, 20 touchdowns and returned 21 punts for 852 yards with eight going for scores. - Post Dispatch

Luther Burden III has been in Columbia for several months now, adapting to his new surroundings. He'd be like every other college freshman, a little nervous to be away from his family. It's different for Burden, though. He's the hope of Eli Drinkwitz and Missouri football, the wide receiver from St. Louis who fans expect to become an all-time Tigers great after spurning Oklahoma, Georgia and Alabama for MU.

Burden said he doesn't go out much around Columbia, but when he does, he sometimes gets recognized by the public. For some, the attention could get stressful, but Burden said he's handling it well. "It's a good feeling," he said. "Just for you to go outside and someone knows you and recognizes who you are, everybody wants that. It's a good feeling." His name is already renowned as the anticipation grows toward his first collegiate football game on Sept. 1 at home against Louisiana Tech. Tigers fans understand the potential is limitless. Todd and Ashley Good were the first to arrive at Burden's signing event with their six-year-old son Breven in tow for a chance to meet Missouri's fourth-ever five-star recruit. "I'm looking forward to his career," Todd Good said. "Easy chance to meet a player, it's not every day you get to meet somebody who could be going in the NFL someday." - Columbia Daily Tribune

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Freshman receiver Luther Burden III could be an early contributor on both offense and as a return man. The third consensus five-star recruit to sign with the Tigers caught 20 touchdown passes and returned eight punts for scores as a senior at East St. Louis High School. He was rated the 17th-best prospect and No. 2 receiver by 247sports. - AP College Football
