Georgia coach Kirby Smart had a good-natured complaint to fans when celebrating the Bulldogs' back-to-back national championships with a parade and ceremony for the second straight year on Saturday. "You didn't tell me last year we were going back to back. Wow!" said a smiling Smart. Smart referenced a quote from legendary UCLA coach John Wooden when he said winning the second straight national title for the first time in school history was more difficult than ending the Bulldogs' 41-year title drought in 2021.

"Winning takes talent," Smart said before adding, "but to repeat takes character." Saturday's parade led the team to Sanford Stadium, where many fans held up three fingers as they looked ahead to the goal of a threepeat. No team has won three consecutive national championships in the AP poll era, which dates to 1936. "We can't wait to see what lies ahead for this team," Smart said. "This team will have to be hungry because a lot of this team is coming back." - AP College Football

Stetson Bennett walked on at Georgia nearly six years ago at the beginning of the Bulldogs' growth into college football's most dominant program. He walked away early in the fourth quarter Monday night to a standing ovation from thousands of grateful Bulldogs fans during a timeout. While Bennett's unlikely journey traces the path of the Bulldogs' recent past, Brock Bowers epitomizes Georgia's present and future as a powerhouse team stacked with superb talents who have known nothing but championships for two incredible years.

The quarterback's remarkable connection with his tight end was on display throughout the Dawgs' 65-7 demolition of TCU, and that chemistry played a major role in making sure the Bulldogs became champions again. Bowers finished with seven catches for 152 yards and a touchdown from Bennett, including a 22-yard TD catch that firmly shut the door on the Horned Frogs in the third quarter of this epic blowout. - Georgia/AP College Football

Georgia was the new No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday night, followed by Ohio State, Michigan and TCU. The Bulldogs' rise from No. 3 was no surprise after their dominant victory against previously top-ranked Tennessee on Saturday. Clemson, which was No. 4 in the selection committee's first rankings last week, also lost, clearing way for changes in the top four. Ohio State stayed at two. The Buckeyes' Big Ten rival, Michigan moved up from five to three. TCU jumped three spots to No. 4, putting the nation's four unbeaten teams at the top of the rankings.

Tennessee fell to No. 5 and was followed by Oregon from the Pac-12 and LSU, which jumped three spots to seventh after the Tigers knocked off Alabama. Clemson fell to 10th and Alabama dropped from sixth to ninth after its second loss of the season. This is the first time since the College Football Playoff rankings began in 2014 that neither Clemson nor Alabama have been ranked in the top six. There has never been a College Football Playoff without the Tigers and the Crimson Tide, which have combined to win five of the eight CFP championships. - AP College Football

Brock Bowers scored two more touchdowns and No. 1 Georgia survived a sloppy performance and surprisingly gritty effort from Kent State, holding off the Golden Flashes 39-22 Saturday. The Bulldogs (4-0) turned it over three times, struggled in the red zone, were burned on a fake punt and gave up several big plays to Kent State (1-3) in what was easily their worst performance of the season. Was it bad enough to knock Georgia out of the top spot in the rankings? Check back Sunday. Kent State had a chance to make it a one-score game with less than 13 minutes remaining after Marquez Cooper scored on a 1-yard run to cap a 12-play, 75-yard drive. But a two-point conversion failed, leaving the Bulldogs with a 32-22 lead. Georgia then finished off the Golden Flashes, driving 75 yards for Kendall Milton's 1-yard plunge on fourth-and-goal with 5 1/2 minutes to go. Bowers, coming off a three-touchdown performance against South Carolina, took it to the end zone on the second play of the game with a dazzling 75-yard run.

Going in motion to take a handoff, the sophomore tight end found a big hole around right end and never stopped running, turning on his impressive speed down the sideline in front of the Georgia bench. Bowers also scored on a 2-yard run, strengthening his credentials as one of the nation's most dynamic offensive weapons. But Bowers was the exception for Georgia on this day. Ladd McConkey lost a pair of fumbles, once on a punt return, another after catching a pass in Kent State territory. Stetson Bennett threw his first interception of the season, though he did score on a 1-yard dive, sticking the ball across the line while falling on his back with 8 seconds left in the first half to send the Bulldogs to the locker room up 26-13. Georgia settled for three field goals by Jack Podlesny after driving inside Kent State's 20-yard line, which allowed the Golden Flashes to hang around. Kent State was facing a team currently ranked in the AP Top 25 for the third time in its first four games, having already lost to No. 18 Washington and No. 6 Oklahoma. - Georgia/AP College Football

More than a year and a half after he first arrived on campus, Brock Bowers is about as well known a name in Athens as anybody that currently plays for the Georgia football team and that includes one Stetson Bennett IV. Media policies as they are under Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart, true freshmen do their talking on the football field. So Tuesday afternoon was the first time Bowers stood before reporters and answered questions since he became a Bulldog. Figure it will be the first of many given his star power now. Something he didn't exactly see coming. "I didn't really expect much during fall camp last year, it just kind of all happened," Bowers said. "And pretty fast, too." If Bowers were to replicate his freshman season output-which may be a stretch given how deep the tight end room is now and the Bulldogs aren't guaranteed to play 15 games again-he would stand No. 2 on the program's all-time touchdown career list behind only Terrence Edwards' 30 who did that in four seasons.

Bowers tied A.J. Green for most receptions ever by a Georgia freshman with 56, broke the program record with 16 touchdown catches and had the most receiving yards ever by a tight end with 882. "I wasn't really focused on that at the moment," he said. "I was kind of worried about every single game. Just winning every single game and just trying to help the team as much as I could." "We didn't know exactly what we had with Brock," offensive coordinator Todd Moken said. "We knew he was rare in how he worked, and how he came every day. How that developed and kept going, we just kind of fell into it. We knew he was fast once he could catch and run with it. That's different. The GPS says one thing on the field, and you think, 'We have to keep trying that." - Athens Daily Banner

Few offensive coordinators get the chance to draw up plays to utilize as many talented tight ends as Georgia's Todd Monken did this offseason. Brian Ferentz came close. The Iowa offensive coordinator in 2018 coached the first pair of tight ends to go in the first round of the NFL draft from the same school in T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant. "If you have two first-round tight ends, shoot, if you're the offensive coordinator they want to fire you no matter what anyways," Ferentz told the Banner-Herald. "If you don't put your two best players on the field at the same time, they definitely want to fire you. Shoot, my mom could look out at our roster in 2018 and know that our two best players offensively were those two tight ends." Brock Bowers may have gone in the first round already after his record-setting 2021 season as a freshman for Georgia, but he's not draft eligible until 2024.

Bulldog tight end Arik Gilbert is viewed as someone with first-round potential and Darnell Washington could be an early-round pick with a big junior season. Ferentz studied Georgia game film - an offense he viewed as similar and with good carryover schematically to his own - in preparing for a bowl game against Kentucky. He saw plenty of Bowers and Washington - a player he recruited out of Las Vegas - and the now departed John Fitzpatrick and he saw plenty of 12 (1 RB, 2 TEs, 2 WRs) and 13 personnel (1 RB, 3 TEs, WR). "The real trick is not getting them on the field at the same time, that's easy," said Ferentz, who coached the tight ends from 2018-2021 and is entering his sixth season as Iowa's OC. "There are a lot of offenses out there that live in a two-tight end set the majority of the time. It's a little bit less common now. …The real trick becomes how do you ensure those guys are the ones getting the ball? That's no easy feat." - Athens Daily Banner
