Cornerback Derrick Canteen tweeted Monday night that he has decided to transfer from Georgia Southern to Virginia Tech. He had tweeted on Dec. 13 that he was entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. Canteen made the All-Sun Belt Conference third team last fall, when he had 64 tackles, one sack, 12 pass breakups and one interception.

He made the All-Sun Belt Conference first team in 2020, when he tied for the FBS lead with six interceptions. He also had 48 tackles, 10 pass breakups, a forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He earned Freshman All-America honors that season. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Canteen has three years of eligibility left, including the extra year of eligibility that the NCAA granted all 2020 fall-sports athletes because of the coronavirus pandemic. - Roanoke Times

Derrick Canteen can remember the last time he felt this healthy - which is a good thing in this context, but it came after a bad thing. "I'm 100% healthy," the redshirt junior cornerback said Wednesday on the first day of fall practice for the Georgia Southern football team. "The last practice was 2021, early in the season going into FAU - that was the last time I could say that." Canteen had trained hard to follow his breakout season of 2020, when he was a Freshman All-American and All-Sun Belt Conference first team after tying for the FBS lead and tying a program record with six interceptions. He had practiced and prepared for the second game of the 2021 season on Sept. 11 at Florida Atlantic, where he recorded one tackle before tearing his pectoral muscle and missing the rest of the season.

Though he was around the team on the sidelines, Canteen was missed greatly on the field as the Eagles' defensive secondary suffered though numerous injuries, inconsistent lineups and inexperienced players pressed into service. The team's overall struggles in a 3-9 campaign were reflected in the defense. Georgia Southern ranked 126th of 130 FBS teams, having yielded 3,474 yards, 289.5 per game, and 28 passing TDs. "It was all a learning experience," said Canteen, an Evans High School graduate. "We had young guys. We had different people at different places, but it was a learning experience. I think what we learned from last year, we'll carry to this year." - Savannah Morning News

Five Georgia Southern football players have been voted to the Preseason All-Sun Belt squad, as released Tuesday afternoon by the conference. The team was voted on by coaches and selected media who cover the league. Derrick Canteen, who was a freshman All-American last year after tying for the national lead with six interceptions, was the lone first-team member for the Eagles. He has been a unanimous first-team selection in the preseason magazines released thus far. Two members of the Eagle offense - running back J.D. King and lineman Aaron Dowdell - both made the second team while punter Anthony Beck II and return specialist Khaleb Hood both made the second team. As a team, Georgia Southern was picked fourth in the East Division. The Eagles are slated to open their season on Sept. 4 at home against Gardner-Webb. - Georgia Southern Football

Georgia Southern cornerback Derrick Canteen is a Preseason All-Sun Belt first-team selection in Phil Steele's College Football Preview. Ten Georgia Southern players were named to the squad. Running back J.D. King, punter Anthony Beck II (a South Effingham High graduate) and punt returner Khaleb Hood were picked for the second team; while offensive lineman Aaron Dowdell and nose tackle C.J. Wright earned third-team honors. Running back Amare Jones (a transfer from Tulane), offensive lineman Brian Miller (Memorial Day School graduate), defensive end Justin Ellis and outside linebacker Randy Wade Jr. were named to the fourth team. Canteen, now a redshirt sophomore, started all 13 games in 2020. He was selected for both the Football Writers Association of America and The Athletic's Freshman All-American teams. - Savannah Morning News

Canteen led the nation in interceptions last season with six. He was named to The Athletic and FWAA Freshman All-American teams, All-Sun Belt Conference first team and ESPN's All-Bowl team after his three-tackle, one-interception performance against Louisiana Tech. After such a strong debut, many athletes would be looking and training to top that season. For Canteen, he's just hoping to put himself in the best position to help his team win games. "The outside noise from last year doesn't add any extra pressure or expectations for this spring and this year," Canteen said. "I'm always competing with myself. It's always me versus me. I always try to hold myself to a higher standard."

His cornerbacks coach sees Canteen working after practice and wants to see the redshirt sophomore continue to be himself in his second year. Whitley thinks the best way to accomplish this is by leading by example. "If we become vocal leaders, that's great, but when you're talking, it doesn't really mean anything unless you're putting in work," Whitley said. "If he keeps working hard and bringing the young guys along, we'll be good." - Savannah Morning News

They then head to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas of the SEC a week later on Sept. 18. The final non-conference game comes in November as the Eagles host BYU on Nov. 20.
