With only 10 days remaining before UConn kicks off the football season at Utah State, coach Jim Mora and the Huskies are moving from fall camp to game preparation. But as the Huskies shift focus, the team is preparing for the season without a significant piece. Mora said Wednesday that redshirt sophomore receiver Cam Ross broke his foot and "it appears that he is going to be out for the season." Ross caught a pass before his left foot was caught in an awkward position during Saturday's scrimmage. A year ago, he broke his right foot in Week 2 against Holy Cross and missed the remainder of the season. "You just feel so bad for the kid, it happened to him last year and he worked so hard to get back," Mora said - CT POst

Wednesday's UConn football media availability started out with sour news; another tough break for the Huskies. Head coach Jim Mora shared that Cam Ross, a redshirt sophomore who was expected to be a top receiver for the team, broke his foot and will likely miss the 2022 season. Ross' injury came during Saturday's situational scrimmage. He caught a pass, his foot landed in awkward position and he rolled over it. Ross limped off the field Saturday, and sat in the back of the end zone with his left foot in a boot on Wednesday.

Ross broke his right foot after two games last season and was working his way back. "You just feel so bad for the kid," Mora said, "it happened to him last year and he worked so hard to get back. He was looking good, I think he was feeling confident, and it is his other foot. Obviously our prayers are with him and they'll get that thing fixed. Knowing Cam and his mindset, and his toughness and determination and character, he'll just put the work in and he'll come back and give it another go. So really tough deal for for him and certainly a blow for the team." Mora noted that Ross had developed into a strong leader for the team, and believes he will have a positive impact whether he plays or not. - Hartford Courant

On a young UConn football team two years ago, freshman wide receivers Cam Ross and Matt Drayton stood out as promising newcomers. Ross, now a 5 foot 9 sophomore, led the Huskies with 60 catches and 723 receiving yards. The Delaware native was second nationally among freshman in catches per game and total receptions. Drayton, a 6-1 native of Jacksonville, Fla., caught 21 balls for 278 yards and two touchdowns. Now in their second seasons, and third year overall at UConn after the Huskies opted out of the 2020 season, both are likely to be leaned on as top playmakers on offense.

"The big thing is, we were young two years ago," wide receiver coach Aaron Smith said. "We've aged a little bit, a little bit more maturity from the Xs-and-Os standpoint, and they understand how to work. That comes with age, and they've done it together. For the past two years, they've grown together, they've worked together, they've studied football together. That's been a big deal with the cohesion of that group and the development of that group - they've all done it together." Ross played largely out of the slot in 2019, and made plays in between the hashes using quick feet and speed. Against Eastern Carolina, he scored on a 94-yard catch-and-run pass from classmate Jack Zergiotis after gaining separation across the middle and outracing a defender down the field. In the year since he last played, Ross said he's been working to improve "everything." "Any weakness that I had, I tried to correct," he said. "Whether it's my game, whether it's mental, I've just been trying to get on everything. Every day, you at least want to come to this facility and do something. Every day you want to work on some kind of aspect." - Hartford Courant
