Blake Shapen threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns as No. 17 Baylor held on to beat Iowa State 31-24 in the Big 12 opener for both teams Saturday. The loss snapped the Cyclones' 11-game home winning streak against conference rivals. Shapen completed 1 9 of his 26 passes, connecting with 11 receivers. Gavin Holmes finished with three catches for 92 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Bears (3-1) seized control midway through the third quarter, driving 93 yards in 10 plays an d taking a 24-14 lead on Richard Reese's 19-yard touchdown run.Iowa State (3-1) was undone by two interceptions and averaged less than 3 yards per rush when the game was competitive. The Cyclones scored 10 points in the final 7 1/2 minutes, but th eir onside kick with 55 seconds remaining was recovered by the Bears. Baylor scored on each of its first three possessions, building a 17-7 lead in the second quarter. Two of the drives ended with touchdown passes from Shapen. Those drives were also aide d by multiple penalties called on the Cyclones' defense. Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen faked a handoff and took off untouched for a 35-yard touchdown run just before halftime, when Texas State thought it had a fourth-down stop, and the 17th-ranked Bears went on to a 42-7 victory Saturday. True freshman Richa rd Reese ran 19 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns for the Bears (2-1), who avoided becoming another Top 25 team to lose at home to a Sun Belt Conference team this season. Shapen completed 15 of 26 passes for 184 yards with a 28-yard TD to Gavin Ho lmes.As defenders tackled Reese in the backfield on fourth-and-1, Shapen raced past a blitzing safety to cap a nine-play, 96-yard drive for a 21-7 lead. That came immediately after Texas State (1-2) had pulled within one score with 1:59 left in th e half and the Bears were backed up to their own 4 after Craig Williams muffed the ensuing kickoff. Baylor (2-1) jumped in front when Reese went straight up the middle for a 14-yard TD on the game's opening drive. He added scores of 52 and 5 yards in the fourth quarter, giving him five rushing TDs in the Bears' two home games. Blake Shapen had known since the end of spring practice that he would be the starting quarterback for 10th-ranked Baylor. He spent that time really getting to know his teammates, and they were certainly on the same page to start the season. Shapen comple ted 17 of 20 passes for 214 yards with two long touchdowns and had a nifty dive into the end zone for another score on the final play of the first half as the Bears beat FCS team Albany 69-10 in their season opener Saturday night. "I think tonight was ju st a glimpse of what you'll see in the future," Shapen said. "I think it was good for some of our guys, and especially me, to get out there and be able to touch the ground again and be able to play again." Gavin Holmes, the sixth-year Bears wideout who m issed all of last season because of a foot injury, returned a punt 72 yards for a score. Monaray Baldwin had two touchdowns, on a 47-yard catch for Baylor's first score before adding a 50-yard reverse run after halftime.The reigning Big 12 champio n Bears have a six-game winning streak, matching fourth-ranked Clemson for the longest active among FBS teams. The Tigers open their season Monday night against Georgia Tech. Shapen's 1-yard TD run gave Baylor a 35-7 halftime lead. Shapen swept to the ri ght sideline and dived toward the end zone. He switched the ball from his right to left hand and was able to reach it out to hit the pylon before falling down out of bounds. "One of the things that I appreciate about Blake is that he is very understated, and not a lot of drama with him," coach Dave Aranda said. "Probably the most drama is what's on his head with his mohawk and all that. In just his second college start last season, Blake Shapen's accuracy was on full display as he completed his first 17 passes and threw three touchdowns to earn MVP honors in Baylor's 21-16 win over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 championship game. Shapen had previously finished off Baylor's 20-10 road win over Kansas State after Bohanon went down with a hamstring injury, and then helped the Bears complete the regular season with a 27-24 win over Texas Tech. Shapen hit 62 of 86 passes (72.1 percent) for 5 96 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions last season."I didn't have much experience under my belt," Shapen said. "So being able to play in the Kansas State game, Texas Tech and the Big 12 (championship) helped me a lot, just being able t o go out there and see how it works. That was my first time being on a college football field and playing an actual game." Aranda wants to see Shapen continue to grow as a leader and develop his passing skills to a higher degree. "I want him to be himsel f and to not hold back, not trying to pretend to be anyone other than who he is," Aranda said. "I think it's one thing on this particular day, it's going to be another after a big win or an unfortunate loss and all that. I think Blake on the inside has g ot it lined up. Gerry Bohanon emerged as a great leader for the Bears last season, playing a pivotal role in building their 12-2 record and first Big 12 championship season since 2014. But it became apparent during spring drills that Shapen was the more accurate passer, something he proved in Baylor's 21-16 win over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 championship game when he hit his first 17 passes while throwing three touchdowns to earn MVP honors.Shapen also proved his toughness and leadership as he played with a s houlder injury late in the game, an injury that kept him out of Baylor's 21-7 win over Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. "Blake has shown his confidence and leadership abilities this summer since the QB1 job was named," said Baylor linebacker Dillon Doyle. "An d I'm just really, really proud of the way that he has brought that confidence and tried to kind of spread that to other people and spread that to the guys around him." Entering his third season on Baylor's roster, Shapen's continued development will be important as will the progress of redshirt freshman Kyron Drones as a backup. For the first time in Big 12 history, defending champion Baylor is the preseason pick to win the conference football title. In media voting released Thursday, Baylor received 17 first-place votes and 365 points to edge perennial favorite Oklahoma, which had 12 first-place votes and 354 points. The Sooners were followed by Oklahoma State, Texas and Kansas State. Baylor is coming off a 12-2 finish that included a dramatic Big 12 championship game win over Oklahoma State and a Sugar Bowl victory over Missi ssippi. The Bears placed five players on the preseason all-Big 12 team but will have to replace standout running backs Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner and will have a new quarterback. Sophomore Blake Shapen is expected to be named Baylor's starting quarterback, prompting fifth-year senior Gerry Bohanon to enter the transfer portal. Reports surfaced late Tuesday night that Shapen will be named starting quarterback after battling Bohano n throughout spring practice. On Wednesday, Bohanon entered the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate transfer. The deadline to enter the transfer portal is May 1. Baylor hasn't made an official announcement on coach Dave Aranda's decision at quarterback. F ollowing Baylor's spring game, Aranda said that he wanted to name a starter before the end of the spring semester. During Saturday's Green and Gold spring game, Shapen was more impressive than Bohanon passing the ball as he hit Josh Cameron in the second quarter for a seven-yard touchdown before finding Monaray Baldwin in stride for a 50-yard touchdown in the final minutes of the game. - Waco Tribune Herald

Dezmon Jackson came up inches short on a desperate, fourth-down dive with 24 seconds and fifth-ranked Oklahoma State fell to ninth-ranked Baylor 21-16 in the Big 12 championship game Saturday, knocking the Cowboys out of contention for a playoff spot. Bl ake Shapen threw three TDs while completing his first 17 passes as Baylor (11-2, College Football Playoff No. 9) took a 21-3 lead. The Cowboys (11-2, CFP No. 5) rallied back, then went 89 yards on 17 plays on their final drive. But their Big 12 and natio nal championship hopes came up just short.After having first-and-goal from 2 following a pass interference penalty, Jackson gained a yard and was held for no gain before an incomplete pass by Spencer Sanders. On fourth down from the 1, Jackson tri ed to sweep wide left, but with Jairon McVea in pursuit, he barely missed while trying to reach the pylon in the front left corner of the end zone. There would need to be some chaos, in form of an upset or two in other conference title games later in the day, for third-time Big 12 champion Baylor to have a chance to be in the final four for the first time when the CFP rankings come out Sunday. Baylor had played poorly on the road all season, and was locked in another tight tussle with red-hot Kansas State, when quarterback Gerry Bohanon grabbed his right hamstring heading out of bounds in the first half Saturday night. Nothing to worry about. Just call on a redshirt freshman who'd thrown three career passes. Blake Shapen completed 16 of 21 passes for 137 yards to steady the Bears on offense, and their defense smothered Kansas State, helping secure a 20-10 victory that kept their Big 12 title hopes alive. "Every situation Blake's been put in going back to the spring, fall, throughout our practices when he rotates through - he's risen to every occasion," Baylor coach Dave Aranda said. "There's some gunslinger in him. I think you saw that." Sha pen got some help from Trestan Ebner, who ran for 86 yards and a touchdown, and Tyquan Thornton, who had five catches for 75 yards, as the Bears (9-2, 6-2 Big 12) won their fourth straight over Kansas State. "We knew this was going to be a really tough t est coming into Manhattan, a big crowd, on the road, and obviously we've had some trouble in the past on the road," Baylor wide receiver Drew Estrada said. "All week we knew it would be a battle." That said, the Bears got plenty of gifts.
