2022 ALL-BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM: DB - Karon Prunty, R-Soph., North Carolina A&T,...Prunty lived up to his preseason hype coming into the Big South Conference from Kansas and the Big 12. Prunty finished second in the conference in interceptions w ith four. He made 32 tackles, including 23 unassisted. Prunty also had seven passes defended. OCT 3 BIG SOUTH DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: North Carolina A&T defensive back Karon Prunty had two key interceptions and added three tackles (two solo) in the Aggies' 24-13 Big South-opening win over Bryant. His first pick ended the Bulldogs' two-minut e offense at the end of the first half with A&T ahead, 14-3. Prunty's second interception came in the fourth quarter to help preserve the Aggies' 24-13 advantage. The roster is never finalized until the first game. South Carolina cornerback Karon Prunty is no longer with the team, having entered the NCAA transfer portal on Aug. 12. Prunty was practicing at first-team cornerback as recently as Aug. 10 (Aug. 11 was an off day) and had appeared at the Gamecocks' media day on Aug. 5. The transfer from Kansas, who didn't give up a touchdown all season as a freshman in 2020, was considered a coup after he picked the Gamecocks over Tennessee. A native of Portsmouth, Va. , Prunty said he chose USC because of its proximity to his hometown. "It just felt like home, when I first came here," Prunty said then. "It's closer to home, like five hours away, so I just felt like this was a perfect fit for me." A reason for Prunty's departure on Aug. 12 was unknown, but one source said that it had nothing to do with on-field or off-field issues. It was solely Prunty's decision. - The Post and Courier

Karon Prunty, sophomore cornerback, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Kansas (originally from Portsmouth, Virginia): "He's long, he's fast. The biggest thing is, making sure he knows what to do. It's always going to be a process of learning what to do, since he came in late summer, so he can be able to play fast." Prunty was the last of the three to arrive on campus. Kansas defensive back Karon Prunty committed to SEC East rival South Carolina on Saturday. Prunty visited both schools in the weeks leading up to his decision and announced his decision on Twitter. He has four years of eligibility remaining with the pote ntial for a redshirt. The Portsmouth, Virginia, product entered the transfer portal June 6. In his lone season at Kansas, he earned 247Sports Freshman All-American honors. Prunty was one of just two Jayhawks to start all nine games on defense, allowing j ust a 38.5% completion percentage when targeted, which ranked seventh nationally. Earlier this week, Miles was in the middle of addressing the Jayhawks' defensive issues in the second halves of recent losses when it prompted him to transition to the subject of Prunty's coverage abilities. When Prunty, a 6-foot-1, 189-pound freshman fr om Portsmouth, Va., broke up a would-be touchdown pass to Kansas State receiver Malik Knowles this past Saturday it gave him six breakups on the season - currently the most among all FBS freshmen - and continued his streak of breaking up at least one pas s in every game of his young career to date. "So guys that are playing for us as young players," Miles said, "really are making great contributions."Prunty, rated by Rivals as a two-star signee in KU's 2020 recruiting class, is still in search of his first interception as a Jayhawk, but his six passes defended tie him with Alabama's Malachi Moore, North Carolina State's Shyheim Battle and Syracuse's Garrett Williams for the most among Power Five freshmen. Moore was a four-star prospect in the Cla ss of 2020, while both Battle and Williams redshirted in 2019. Louisiana Tech's Cedric Woods, a true freshman like Prunty and Moore, leads FBS freshmen with seven passes defended in six games. As K-State showed when Will Howard threw toward Prunty's man, Knowles, early on a 30-plus yard deep shot, opponents like to test a freshman cornerback. KU head coach Les Miles immediately after the loss, though, spoke optimistically when asked to assess the defense. "We have some really good kids and good players in that segment of our team," Miles said. "Karon Prunty (four tackles and a pass breakup) w as a true freshman starter (at cornerback) in that game and played really lights out," Miles gave as an example. "We're excited about some of the things that are going on on that side of the ball." Junior inside linebacker Dru Prox led KU's defense with 11 total tackles, tying his career high. It didn't take long for Robert Jackson to realize that KU freshman cornerback Karon Prunty had a bright future. Jackson was only Prunty's head coach for one season at I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia. Jackson took over the program in the o ffseason, and only needed to see Prunty in a few drills to fully understand his potential. "I knew right away that he was special," Jackson told the Journal-World in a phone interview. "We knew we had a special player. I was just surprised his recruiting wasn't through the roof at that time." Jackson's prophecy proved to be true.Prunty was listed as a starting cornerback in KU's original depth chart, which was released on Monday ahead of Saturday's season opener against Coastal Carolina. In rough ly 12 months, Prunty went from an under-recruited prospect originally committed to Liberty to a true freshman starter for a Power Five program. "I'm not sure how good he thought he could be," Jackson said. "He played both sides of the ball. He ran punts and kickoffs back for touchdowns. He was one of our leading receivers.
