Defensive lineman Mitchell Melton has been medically cleared to participate in individual drills for Ohio State during spring practice. But Melton, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament in last year's spring game and missed the season as a result, is expected to remain limited to individual work for at least a majority of the practices over the next five weeks. "We've just got to be smart," Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said, "and bring him back the right way." As seen by reporters during a half-hour viewing period as spring practice opened Tuesday, Melton went through a series of drills with the defensive linemen.

A versatile edge defender, Melton enrolled at Ohio State in 2020 as a linebacker before moving to the defensive line last year. His all-around skillset made him a candidate to line up at the "Jack" position, the hybrid defensive end-linebacker role, before he went down last April. "We're hoping he can make an impact for us this year," Day said. "Before the injury, we were excited about him and what he was doing. He's got a really good pass-rush ability and good strength and play speed." - Columbus Dispatch

Redshirt sophomore Mitchell Melton had emerged as an intriguing piece for Ohio State's defense in spring practice. As newly hired defensive coordinator Jim Knowles installed his scheme over the five weeks of practices, Melton stepped into a hybrid defensive end-linebacker position known as the "jack." The staff liked his length for the role as Melton stands 6-foot-3, and to complement his experience as a linebacker, he worked out with the defensive linemen to broaden his skillset needed for the role. But Melton won't ultimately get a crack there this fall.

Buckeyes coach Ryan Day revealed to reporters Friday that Melton had injured an anterior cruciate knee ligament during the spring game, a setback that is expected to sideline him for next season. As he discussed the prognosis for Melton, Day described it as a "long-term" one, though he stopped short of formally ruling him out for 2022. Melton went down during the second quarterback of the scrimmage last month while rushing quarterback Kyle McCord. He fell to the turf at Ohio Stadium as he sought to shed a block from right tackle George Fitzpatrick. With the assistance of trainers, Melton limped off the field. It appeared as if he had aggravated his right knee as he stretched it during his walk to the locker room. - Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State football lost another potential defensive contributor for the remainder of the spring. Redshirt freshman linebacker Mitchell Melton was on crutches Monday during the portion of practice reporters were allowed to watch. Ohio State coach Ryan Day would not go into injury specifics but said Melton suffered "a long-term injury." Melton joins defensive tackle Haskell Garrett, cornerbacks Sevyn Banks and Cameron Brown, linebacker Dallas Gant and safety Kourt Williams as defensive players who are out or limited from practice. "We're going to have to do a great job developing the young guys, so we're a little thin going into the preseason," Day said. "I think we have a good plan and Al (Washington) will do a great job with the young guys." - Cleveland Plain Dealer
