  02/01/23 - QB Haynes KingrJr/2026, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 204 (DS#9 QB) + More +

From birth, Haynes King has lived a life revolving around football. Growing up the son of a high-school football coach in Texas, King was a ballboy for the Longview High Lobos "as soon as he was old enough to protect himself on the sideline," Haynes' father John said. As a young boy and later a star quarterback in Longview, an east Texas city of about 82,000 roughly 40 miles from the Louisiana border, he spent many an hour in the Lobo Den, the school's fieldhouse. "He's just a guy that leads by example," John King said of his son in a phone interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Not a big rah-rah guy. Hard worker, great teammate. Enjoys the locker room, the coaches office. He just kind of grew up a coach's kid and that's what he likes to do. It doesn't take much to make him happy. He's just kind of one of the guys." That approach will surely find itself welcome within the confines of the Georgia Tech locker room.

After three years at Texas A&M, King seeks a new start at Tech and a fair shot at playing time -- and has three remaining seasons of eligibility. "That's all he wants," John King said. "He just wants a chance to win a job and play college football, be a starter." At Texas A&M, King was a heralded recruit - he was ranked the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 class by 247Sports Composite - who twice won the Aggies' starting job (2021 and 2022) coming out of the preseason. He was recognized by the team with awards for his toughness, attitude and conditioning level and earned the praise of coach Jimbo Fisher. But on-field success was not to be his as an Aggie. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  12/02/22 - QB Haynes KingrJr/2026, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 204 (DS#9 QB) + More +

Texas A&M quarterback Haynes King entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer Friday, with freshman cornerback Denver Harris also announcing on Twitter that he will enter the portal. King threw for 1,220 yards, 7 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in six games this season for the Aggies. He was the No. 46 prospect in the 2020 class out of Longview, Texas, and signed with the Aggies with plenty of fanfare surrounding his college potential. He redshirted his first season in 2020 and started the first two games in 2021 before suffering a season-ending injury. King once again started the opener in 2022 but had a roller-coaster season that included another injury. - ESPN.com

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is open to changing quarterbacks and the play-caller if it will jump-start the offense. The 24th-ranked Aggies have one of the country's worst offenses after two games. A&M ranks 100th in scoring (22.5 points per game), 101st in total offense (341.5 yards per game) and 114th in rushing (99.5 ypg). Sophomore quarterback Haynes King threw a pair of interceptions in a 31-0 victory over Sam Houston State. He was ineffective in last week's 17-14 loss to Appalachian State, completing 13 of 20 for 97 yards with no touchdown and no interceptions. He was sacked twice. "We possibly could [make a change]," Fisher said. "We'll evaluate everything this week. We'll evaluate every position this week." That includes Fisher relinquishing his play-calling duties. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Haynes King threw for a career-high 364 yards and three long touchdowns to lead No. 6 Texas A&M to a 31-0 win over Sam Houston Saturday in a game that included an almost three-hour weather delay. "We've got a long way to go," Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said. "We've got to get a lot better... just got to keep developing in the things we do." King, who was named the starter last week after beating out two others in camp, threw touchdown passes of 66, 63 and 43 yards in the opener for both teams.

King also threw two interceptions in an inconsistent performance in his return after breaking his leg in the second game last season. Ainias Smith had six receptions for a career-high 164 yards with two touchdowns and Devon Achane ran for a score to help Texas A&M to the victory. "On the defensive side, I felt like they played well," Smith said. "Sticking to the offensive side, we need to go ahead and execute a whole lot better.” The Aggies were up 17-0 at halftime when the game was suspended due to lightning in the area at 1 p.m. Neither team returned to the field after halftime and a message was posted on the video boards telling fans that the game was suspended and to seek shelter. - Texas A&M/AP College Football

Haynes King hasn't taken a snap as Texas A&M's starting quarterback, but he's already in good company. "I'd hate to say it, but if I were coaching Joe Montana or Tom Brady, I'd still be nervous," A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher said. Kellen Mond was Fisher's starting quarterback for his first 36 games in Aggieland. Fisher said he worried about Mond's first game as his quarterback and basically every other one, especially season openers. "No matter what, those first games there's always those jitters, there's always those concerns," Fisher said. "You want to dot your i's and cross your t's as a coach to make sure you've done everything possible to put him in the best position to be successful." King and the team have put in the work and are well prepared, Fisher said.

King and A&M have all the ingredients to be a winning combination from the get-go. King is talented dual quarterback and he's surrounded by 15 returning starters, including four preseason All-Americans. King was named the starting quarterback for Saturday's season opener against Kent State because of consistency, not his ability to make plays with his legs. "It was his pocket presence and his ability to throw the ball accurately," Fisher said at Monday's press conference. "I'm still a firm believer in decision making and accuracy is how you play great football." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

  08/27/21 - QB Haynes KingrJr/2026, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 204 (DS#9 QB) + More +

Freshman quarterback Haynes King will lead the Aggie offense in Texas A&M's home opener against Kent State, head coach Jimbo Fisher told ESPN 97.5 Wednesday. "Right now, Haynes will be our starter and Zach [Calzada] will be the backup, right now," Fisher said on "The Bench" morning show. "We had a great talk yesterday. I feel very comfortable with both guys. I think both guys can win and play well. I think both guys had an outstanding camp and this is the criteria of how we went through things." The 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback is in his second season at A&M and saw action in two games last year. Once the Aggies' 52-24 loss to Alabama was out of hand, King made his college debut and connected on a 17-yard pass and rushed for a team-high 43 yards. He ended the drive with an interception in the end zone. His first career touchdown was to tight end Max Wright on a 45-yard crossing route in the Aggies' 48-3 win at South Carolina. - Bryan/College Station Eagle
