Nevada historically has relied on an effective passing game, but last year's starting quarterback, Carson Strong, now is an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles. Oklahoma State transfer Shane Illingworth is the most likely replacement. How effective will Illingworth be for the Wolf Pack? The ex-Oklahoma State backup was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and had plenty of Power Five offers. He didn't see the field much in Stillwater, Okla., aside from a start against Missouri State when the usual starter was in COVID-19 protocols. He'll have a tall task with an inexperienced offense around him. - The Gazette

The Wolf Pack quarterback room just got a bit bigger - and, perhaps, a lot more competitive. Nevada officially announced the addition of Oklahoma State transfer Shane Illingworth, a verbal commitment from earlier in the year, on Tuesday. He'll join the team in time for summer camp, which usually has an early August start. In two seasons in mostly a reserve role for the Cowboys, Illingworth completed 69 of his 120 attempts, good for 939 yards and seven touchdowns. His best outing was a 315-yard game in OSU's opening win over Missouri State last season. As a first-time transfer, he will be immediately eligible to play in the fall; he has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

"Excited to have a quality athlete with Division I experience competing for our quarterback position," Nevada coach Ken Wilson said in a news release. "Shane is a fierce competitor with great intelligence who I have known for a long time. "Competition at all positions will make our team better. His presence will certainly help all of the players competing to be our starting QB." Illingworth joins a Nevada roster with an overall shortage of quarterback experience. Nate Cox, who backed up Carson Strong the last two seasons, led the first team during spring camp. He also started Nevada's bowl game loss to Western Michigan in late December that ended the 2021 season. - Reno Gazette Journal

Oklahoma State stopped Missouri State on fourth down twice during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter to hold on for a 23-16 victory on Saturday. The Cowboys botched a kickoff return deep in their own territory after the Bears scored their first touchdown with 3:06 remaining. Missouri State, trailing by seven, couldn't score on the possession and had another chance to tie the game with less than a minute left but failed to complete the rally. "The defense, obviously, did a great job," said Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy. "We put (Missouri State) in terrible situations multiple times, and they continue to make play after play after play after play." Oklahoma State's Devin Harper, who finished with a team-high 2 1/2 tackles for loss, and Brock Martin recorded the final sack of Missouri State's Jason Shelley that put the Bears away. Oklahoma State backup quarterback Shane Illingworth threw for 315 yards and was 22-of-40 passing in his third career start. Illingworth, who replaced regular starter Spencer Sanders in the team's season opener, raced Oklahoma State down the field on its first offensive possession and connected in the end zone with Tay Martin. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Oklahoma State will be without backup quarterback Shane Illingworth on Saturday when the Cowboys face Texas Tech at 11 a.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium. Illingworth has tested positive for COVID-19, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Oklahoman. As a result of the positive test, Illingworth must be isolated for 10 days. Illingworth has played in four games this season for the Cowboys, starting two and entering two after starter Spencer Sanders was injured. - Daily Oklahoman

OSU's true freshman quarterback relieved injured starter Spencer Sanders midway through the first quarter and completed the Cowboys' only touchdown drive, with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Logan Carter. Sanders returned for the fourth quarter, but in between, Illingworth completed just two of 15 passes for 32 yards. Illingworth's numbers were a ghastly 5-of-21 for 71 yards. Yes, OSU had trouble blocking the Sooners, but this is the 21st century; 5-of-21 is losing football. - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma State has been relying on backup quarterback Shane Illingworth after starter Spencer Sanders left the Cowboys' season opener with an ankle injury. Sanders is now healthy, but it's unclear what Oklahoma State will do with its quarterback position this weekend. "We're alternating reps," Gundy said. "We might play both. I'm not sure right now. We continue to give them quality work. Spencer is healthy, and obviously Shane has played pretty good. "We're in pretty good shape at the quarterback position." Illingworth is completing 73.5% of his passes for 483 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Sanders threw for 2,065 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last year as a freshman. "I think both quarterbacks have shown to be really efficient in their offense," Campbell said. "I don't know if it really changes who they are offensively, and I think both quarterbacks have proven to be really efficient and really effective in their offense." - Des Moines Register

Chuba Hubbard was limited to 35 yards in the first half but scored on a 3-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to lift No. 11 Oklahoma State to a 16-7 victory over Tulsa in the season opener for both teams. Trailing 7-3 late in the third quarter, Oklahoma State offense received a big offensive spark when the Cowboys' third quarterback, true freshman Shane Illingworth, entered the game and immediately connected on his first three passes, including the two longest plays of the day, hitting Tylan Wallace for receptions of 36 and 29 yards. Illingworth completed 4 of 5 passes for 74 yards in just over a quarter of work, helping Wallace end up with four receptions for 94 yards. Freshman Alex Hale made three field goals, two in the fourth quarter, from 27, 40 and 29 yards.

For Tulsa, Zach Smith completed 18 of 28 passes for 164 yards and one touchdown, a 16-yard toss to Josh Johnson with 1:38 left in the first half that put the Golden Hurricane up 7-3. The game took place a week after it was originally supposed to, with Tulsa requesting it be rescheduled to better prepare for the season after missing nine days of practice earlier in camp due to several players testing positive for the coronavirus. Smith was one of the players that had to be quarantined and would not have been able to play if the game was held as scheduled last week. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football
