  11/27/23 - QB Will HowardrSr/2025, Ohio State, 6-4, 242 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Kansas State quarterback Will Howard, who led the Wildcats to the Big 12 title last season and another bowl game this season, joined Wildcats running back Treshaun Ward among a rush of players into college football's transfer portal Monday. Most teams wrapped up regular seasons this past weekend, leading some to declare their intent to transfer. Howard and Ward are among those who are graduate transfers, meaning they could enter the portal and become immediately eligible, while players who have yet to graduate must wait until Dec. 4 to make their announcements official. Howard emerged as the Wildcats' starter last year after injuries to Adrian Martinez, and he led them to an upset of eventual national runner-up TCU in the Big 12 title game. Howard was the clearcut starter entering this season, though he was pushed at times by freshman Avery Johnson, and threw for 2,643 yards with 24 touchdown passes and eight interceptions.

Howard, who will have one year of eligibility left, had tears in his eyes as he walked off the field after his final game at Kansas State on Saturday. He accounted for two touchdowns in a 42-35 loss to Iowa State in a game played in heavy snow. In a social media post, Howard thanked Kansas State coach Chris Klieman, his teammates and the Wildcats' fanbase before concluding: "I'm looking forward to this next chapter in my life and in the possibilities that lie ahead." His departure means that Johnson, one of the nation's best dual-threat quarterbacks coming out of high school, will likely start for the Wildcats (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) in their bowl game. Johnson threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns but may be even more dangerous on the ground - he took over for Howard against Texas Tech and ran for five TDs in a 38-21 victory. - AP College Football

  11/19/22 - QB Will HowardrSr/2025, Ohio State, 6-4, 242 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Will Howard threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, Cincere Mason returned an interception for a TD and No. 19 Kansas State moved closer to a berth in the Big 12 championship game by beating West Virginia 48-31 on Saturday. Kansas State (8-3, 6-2 Big 12, No. 15 CFP) can clinch a title game spot alongside No. 4 TCU on Dec. 3 with a win in its regular season finale at home against Kansas. West Virginia (4-7, 2-6) failed to become bowl eligible for the second time under fourth-year coach Neal Brown and for only the fourth time since 2000. Both team's quarterbacks played well in a battle among backups. Howard, starting in place of the injured Adrian Martinez, completed 19 of 27 passes for 294 yards. West Virginia's Garrett Greene got the nod ahead of JT Daniels after Greene's solid play in the second half of a win over Oklahoma a week ago. Greene threw three TD passes to Sam James and finished 15 of 27 passes for 204 yards.

He was intercepted twice. Greene also scored on a 13-yard run. Kansas State led 28-19 after the first quarter. Mason's 37-yard interception return put the Wildcats up 14-0 a little more than 3 minutes into the game. Later in the quarter, West Virginia's Malachi Ruffin returned an interception 43 yards for a score. But West Virginia couldn't mount a comeback. By halftime, Kansas State had 312 total yards and led 41-25. It was the highest scoring first half by the Wildcats since scoring 45 against Montana State in 2008, and the most allowed by West Virginia since allowing 56 to Baylor in 2013. The offenses slowed down considerably after halftime. West Virginia ate up nearly nine minutes of clock time on its opening possession of the third quarter, but Casey Legg's 44-yard field goal try fell short, his first miss in 14 attempts this season. He also missed two earlier extra-point kicks. Howard threw a 43-yard TD toss to Malik Knowles in the fourth quarter. He also had a 15-yard scoring pass to Ben Sinnott in the second. - Kansas State/AP College Football

  11/12/22 - QB Will HowardrSr/2025, Ohio State, 6-4, 242 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Will Howard threw for three touchdowns after Adrian Martinez exited with an injury, and No. 23 Kansas State buoyed its Big 12 title hopes with a 31-3 rout of Baylor on Saturday night. The defending conference champion Bears (6-4, 4-3 Big 12) will need help to get back to the championship game after a three-game winning streak had put them back in contention. The Wildcats (7-3, 5-2) went into the game in a three-way tie for second place in the Big 12 with Baylor and No. 18 Texas, which played undefeated and fourth-ranked TCU later. Howard came on after Martinez appeared to injure his lower body getting a first down on a quarterback sneak in the first quarter. The junior who threw four TD passes in a 48-0 victory over then-No. 9 Oklahoma State two weeks ago put the Wildcats ahead 7-0 on the same drive with a 15-yard scoring pass to Ben Sinnott. - Kansas State/AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM NOMINEE: Will Howard, Kansas State University,...Howard was the driving force behind K-State's Get in the Game/Be the Match bone marrow registry drive, which presented an opportunity for people to be connected with a blood cancer patient in need of a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. K-State had over 90 of its football student-athletes join the registry, and Howard recruited 20 of his teammates to help with the on-campus drive. The event was extremely successful as the team was able to have over 400 K-State students join the Be the Match registry before running out of all swabbing kits. - Kansas State Football

  11/03/20 - QB Will HowardrSr/2025, Ohio State, 6-4, 242 (DS#6 QB) + More +

From the moment he hit the field for a two-snap sequence in Kansas State's opener, quarterback Will Howard has played like a veteran. Against West Virginia's stout defense Saturday, Howard played more like one would expect for a freshman who, this time last year, still was in high school and starring for Downington High in Downington, Pa., four and a half hours away from Milan Puskar Stadium. Howard threw an interception on the game's opening possession. He threw another later in the quarter. And his final one on the day, in the third period, was returned for a touchdown. Well aware that quarterbacks walk a fine line - earning too much praise after victories and too much criticism after losses - K-State head coach Chris Klieman forcefully defended Howard following the team's 37-10 defeat.

"We're for sure not going to hang this on Will Howard, because I think he's continuing to improve," Klieman said. "I thought he made some really good throws. We have to be better for him, and we have to be better with a lot of the things we're doing offensively. We've got to block better. We've got to catch the ball better. We've got to do a lot of different things." Yes, Klieman said, there might have been a throw or two Howard wanted back; Klieman added "every quarterback in the country" goes through a similar dilemma every game. Not that he expects the performance to rattle Howard. "The one thing I'm not worried about is Will's confidence - any of that stuff," Klieman said of Howard, who completed 19 of his 37 passes (51%) for 184 yards and a touchdown along with the three interceptions. "Will's got the 'it factor.' He'll be just fine." - Manhattan Mercury

Kansas State got another non-offensive touchdown and a solid performance from a true freshman quarterback in his first start against one of the Big 12's best defensive coaches. That was enough for the Wildcats to improve to 3-0 in the Big 12 Conference. AJ Parker returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown and Will Howard accounted for 203 of K-State's 289 total yards in a 21-14 win at TCU on Saturday. Howard was only the fourth true freshman quarterback to start a game for the Wildcats (3-1, 3-0 Big 12), and the first since Josh Freeman in 2006. He was 8-of-19 passing for 117 yards with an interception and 86 yards rushing, though 80 came on one carry. - Kansas State/AP College Football
