 Harrison Bailey, Louisville, Player News

Johnathan Baldwin broke up a Nate Cox fourth-down pass on the final play of the game to preserve UNLV's 27-22 win over rival Nevada on Saturday to claim the Fremont Cannon in the annual rivalry game. It was the first collegiate game played at Allegiant Stadium - home of the NFL's Raiders. Nick Williams pulled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Harrison Bailey with 6:45 left in the game to stake the Rebels to a 27-16 lead, but Nevada rallied. Cox drove the Wolf Pack 75 yards in 12 plays, cutting the deficit to 27-22 when Toa Taua punched in from a yard out with 2:28 left.

UNLV was unable to move the ball and punted with 2:05 left and Cox engineered a drive that set up a third-and-1 at the UNLV 5-yard line. Cox threw incomplete on third down and his pass for Jamaal Bell on fourth down was well defended. Bailey was 16 of 27 for 209 yards and two touchdowns with an interception to lead the Rebels (5-7, 3-5 Mountain West). Williams had five catches for 84 yards and a touchdown. Kyle Williams added four catches for 76 yards and a score. Cox completed 27 of 44 passes for 276 yards and a touchdown, but had two second-half interceptions for the Wolf Pack (2-10, 0-8). Taua carried 29 times for 144 yards and a touchdown. - UNLV/AP College Football

After the first day of UNLV football preseason practice, sophomore quarterback Harrison Bailey (6-5, 225) admitted he was a bit "shaky" and made a few mistakes. But that was to be expected as the Rebels began to prepare for their Aug. 27 season opener against Idaho State. Coming off a 2-10 record last season, third-year UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo cramming a lot of football into a short period of time. He is looking for vast improvement. Bailey's focus is to build chemistry with his new teammates after transferring from Tennessee. He embraces the challenge. "When the quarterback speaks, everybody listens," he said. "Being that vocal leader can take this team to the next level. That's one of the things I've been working on." Junior Doug Brumfield and sophomore Cameron Friel are in competition with Bailey for the starting spot.

In two seasons at Tennessee, Bailey started three games, completed 51 of 75 passes for 594 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. More was expected of him after he was an Elite 11 finalist in 2019 following a great high schools career at Marietta High School, where he threw for 11,716 yards to rank fourth in Georgia history and become one of just five Georgia players to surpass 10,000 career passing yards, joining Trevor Lawrence (13,902), Deshaun Watson (13,077), Jake Fromm (12,745) and K'Hari Lane (10,217) - Las Vegas Review

Sophomore quarterback Harrison Bailey is leaving Tennessee after finding himself third on the depth chart under first-year coach Josh Heupel. Bailey announced his decision Wednesday in a social media post. "It's with a heavy heart, I would like to announce that I will be entering my name into the transfer portal and exploring other opportunities," Bailey wrote. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound QB from Marietta, Georgia, was the No. 3 pro-style quarterback prospect nationally and a four-star recruit by the 247Sports Composite coming out of high school. He wound up starting three of seven games as a freshman, going 1-2. He was 48 of 68 for 578 yards with four touchdown passes and two interceptions. This season, Heupel named Joe Milton as the starter before the opener. After an injury, Hendon Hooker, a graduate transfer from Virginia Tech, started the past six games. Bailey played only in a rout of Tennessee Tech where he threw for 16 yards and ran for the first TD of his career. - AP College Football

The University of Tennessee is getting ahead of a landmark NCAA decision. UT has instituted a program with the aim of teaching athletes how to gain value from their Name, Image and Likeness. The NCAA later this month is expected to vote on proposed legislation that would allow athletes to benefit from their NIL. The state of Tennessee recently passed legislation allowing athletes to profit off of their personal business ventures, which is set to go into effect in 2022. In response, the university is developing a set of for-credit courses that will "deliver education related to brand development, marketing, communications/messaging, personal finance/financial planning and several other key elements of NIL maximization."

"Educating our student-athletes is the key to helping them maximize their opportunities relative to NIL," athletic director Danny White said in a news release. "As an institution of higher learning, it was important that our NIL program include a comprehensive educational component. This program assures current and future Vols and Lady Vols that the University of Tennessee is prepared to guide them in effectively managing, expanding and enhancing the value of their personal brands." Tennessee is also partnering with Altius Sports Partners, which will allow the athletes to confer with a number of consultants and professionals from around the nation. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Harrison Bailey had to wait to make his first preseason practice impressions with Tennessee football. His initial opportunities had bright spots, according to Vols coach Jeremy Pruitt. "I thought he had a period there where he really kind of shined taking care of the football," Pruitt said Friday of Wednesday's practice. Bailey, Tennessee's highly touted freshman quarterback, hopped into UT practices for the second week after he missed the first week. Pruitt said after Tennessee's first practice on Aug. 17 that "a few" players did not participate and were quarantined because of COVID-19 protocol. Bailey was among them.

Pruitt did not detail whether Bailey tested positive for COVID-19 or was quarantined because of contact-tracing protocol. Bailey's father, Orvel, told The Athletic that Bailey did not test positive for COVID-19 and was in required quarantine because of a high-risk contact. "I think Harrison is going to be a solid football player for us here," offensive coordinator Jim Chaney said Thursday. "He looks to me like every other freshman quarterback I have had to deal with. They are just learning. The ones they know, they play quick and fine. "I am pleased with Harrison as he continues to develop." - Knoxville News Sentinel
