Former Georgia Tech wide receiver E.J. Jenkins has been performing before NFL scouts this week at the Hula Bowl, one of five former Yellow Jackets players who has been chosen to take part in a pre-draft all-star game. The Hula Bowl will be played at noon Saturday in Orlando and televised on CBS Sports Network. Jenkins caught 17 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns this past season, his lone season with the Jackets after transferring from South Carolina.

A year ago, former Tech safety Tariq Carpenter parlayed an impressive week of practice at the Hula Bowl into an invitation to the higher-profile Senior Bowl, where he improved his draft standing and ultimately was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round. The four other former Jackets who have been selected to compete in a postseason showcase game are wide receiver Malachi Carter and linebacker Ayinde Eley (NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, Jan. 28 in Pasadena, Calif.), linebacker Charlie Thomas (East-West Shrine Bowl, Feb. 2 in Las Vegas) and defensive end Keion White (Senior Bowl, Feb. 4 in Mobile, Ala.). Running back Hassan Hall took part in the College Gridiron Showcase, a pre-draft event in Fort Worth, Texas. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Georgia Tech received commitments from two more transfers Monday: wide receiver E.J. Jenkins from South Carolina and quarterback Taisun Phommachanh from Clemson. Both announced their decisions Monday. Jenkins will have one season of eligibility remaining after playing one season at South Carolina. Previously, Jenkins had played two seasons at FCS St. Francis, where he caught 39 passes for 779 yards as a sophomore in 2019. Jenkins transferred to South Carolina after St. Francis did not play in the 2020 season because of COVID-19. He played in 12 games, making one start, and caught eight passes for 117 yards. He announced his decision to transfer April 18. Jenkins, 6-7 and 243 pounds, also can play tight end. He'll add size, depth and experience to a position group that lost Kyric McGowan (37 catches in 2021) and Adonicas Sanders (29 catches). - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Former South Carolina tight end/wide receiver EJ Jenkins announced his commitment to Georgia Tech in a tweet Monday. He entered the transfer portal April 18 after one full season with Shane Beamer's Gamecocks, deciding to move to the ACC for the 2022 football season. "Thank god for allowing me to continue this journey," Jenkins wrote. "In addition, thank you to all the coaches that reached out during this process. With that being said I will be finishing my college football career in the A!" Jenkins, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound pass catcher from Virginia, caught eight passes for 117 yards in 12 games last season. He did not participate in the Garnet and Black spring game due to injury and was limited throughout spring practice. Jenkins flashed potential after a successful stint at FCS St. Francis (Pa.), where he played with former USC quarterback Jason Brown. Brown transferred to Virginia Tech after Beamer added former Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler. - EJ Jenkins twitter and online sources

South Carolina is down an offensive playmaker just two days after it wrapped up spring practices. Receiver/tight end E.J. Jenkins announced on Monday that he plans to enter the transfer portal after just one season at USC. Jenkins caught eight passes for 117 yards in 12 games last year. "I am truly blessed to meet people that I can call family in my time at South Carolina," Jenkins wrote in his announcement via Twitter. "Thank you, Coach (Shane) Beamer, Coach (Justin) Stepp and the rest of the staff for allowing me (to be) part of the 2021 season." The Virginia native came to Columbia after a standout career at St. Francis (Pa.) with quarterback Jason Brown last spring.

Brown also previously announced his intention to transfer from South Carolina and has since landed at Virginia Tech. Jenkins - who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs in at 240 pounds - was expected to be a dynamic red zone threat in 2021, but never quite evolved into a consistent enough presence in the South Carolina passing game. His most prolific game came against Troy on Oct. 2 when he recorded two catches for 28 yards and a touchdown. Jenkins also notched one reception for 30 yards in the regular-season finale against Clemson. - Rock Hill Herald

Wide receiver or tight end? That's a question South Carolina's E.J. Jenkins gets asked a lot these days. At 6-foot-7 and 243 pounds, Jenkins has a simple answer to the question. "I'm an athlete. I do both. I play offense so I do whatever they need me to do," Jenkins said last week at USC's on-campus media day. Jenkins played both receiver and tight end in the spring and summer since arriving to the Gamecock football program from St. Francis (Pennsylvania) in January along with teammate Jason Brown. Jenkins had 39 catches for 779 yards and a school-record 13 touchdowns in 2019 for St. Francis. The Red Flash didn't have a fall 2020 or spring 2021 season because of COVID-19. This spring, Jenkins said he rotated between receivers and tight ends and bounced back and forth between both positions' meeting rooms. During the media viewing portion at two of USC's fall practices, Jenkins was working strictly as a tight end with the second team. With offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield's desire for more two tight-end sets, Jenkins could see plenty of time at that spot.

Brown still views his childhood friend as more of a receiver but acknowledges that he could play both. Jenkins said he hasn't played a whole lot of tight end in live games except for a select handful of formations at St. Francis. "I look at him more as a receiver because I have been with him for 10 or 11 years," said Brown, who played with Jenkins at Chancellor High School in Virginia and at St. Francis.."He is built for tight end, but he can play receiver. He can play anywhere. He can put his hand in the dirt and can block. He can run short intermediate routes or take the top off the coverage if he has to. "He is a special athlete. They don't breed them like that everywhere, that is for sure." - Rock Hill Herald

At 6-foot-7, E.J. Jenkins is known for causing trouble for opposing defenses in high school and in college. South Carolina coach Shane Beamer and his staff hope that continues in Jenkins' first season with the Gamecocks. The St. Francis University (Pennsylvania) senior transfer has made a big impression on the coaches and teammates during the offseason and the first two weeks of spring practice. "That boy E.J. is a big body right there," Gamecocks receiver Jalen Brooks said Thursday. "He is a hard worker. Ever since he has come to campus, he has been coming running extra routes. And even when we were doing things with no football, he has been trying to learn the plays. "He brings a taller aspect to the offense and is a well all-around player."

Jenkins has been showing off his versatility so far, getting reps at both receiver and tight end. He said playing tight end is a new experience, and learning things such as blocking schemes has been a challenge. Jenkins has gotten some help from USC veterans such as Nick Muse, the team's starting tight end last season, about playing the position. He is confident he can contribute at either spot. "Playing tight end or receiver, it's a matchup nightmare," Jenkins said. "I'm learning both positions...It's really been coming along well and I'm just being a student of the game and can't wait to learn more. "The way the offense is looking, playmakers are going to get the ball. Even when there is nothing there, we can make a gain out of it. Us being versatile is going to be really big this season." - Rock Hill Herald
