John Rhys Plumlee, Mississippi, Player News

It's hard to find a backup quarterback anywhere in college football with better name recognition than John Rhys Plumlee. There's good reason for that. Not many backup quarterbacks ran for 1,000 yards as true freshmen, are key cogs for top-10 baseball programs or have their piano-playing past referenced on nearly every game broadcast. And, perhaps most crucially at this point, not many backup quarterbacks led their team to bowl wins by making crucial plays at wide receiver. Plumlee made it clear after the Outback Bowl that he sees himself as a quarterback.

He's started eight games at quarterback and scored 17 touchdowns in two years. But in the 2021 Outback Bowl Plumlee subbed in as a slot receiver and caught five passes for 73 yards. That included three catches for 55 yards on the Rebels' game-winning touchdown drive with less than five minutes remaining. That performance has led to speculation about whether Ole Miss views Plumlee as a receiver or quarterback. That speculation can't really go anywhere this spring since Plumlee is playing baseball. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said Plumlee has dropped in for a few quarterback meetings this spring when he's had spare time. - The Clarion Ledger

Week one of SEC football in Oxford was unlike any opening weekend the city has seen before. No Grove tailgating, limited stadium capacity and a week-one top 25 opponent are all new adjustments for the Rebel fandom. The University of Florida Gators ultimately beat the Ole Miss Rebels 51-35. Throughout the Rebels' first game, there were many expected plays, but there were also a great deal of unexpected decisions. The looming battle for starting quarterback ended before the game began as Matt Corral was named the starter on the Jumbotron. This was an outcome that people were relatively prepared for; however, what was not expected was the sparing use of John Rhys Plumlee. Plumlee played as a receiver in the first half, where he was targeted twice and caught one ball for a six-yard gain. Other than that, he had 3 yards passing and four rushing attempts. - Daily Mississippian

Former Maryland coach D.J. Durkin, who was fired during the 2018 season following the death of a player who had collapsed during offseason conditioning drills, was hired Thursday as an assistant by Mississippi. Durkin, who spent last season as a consultant with the Atlanta Falcons, will join new Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin's defensive staff. Durkin did stints as defensive coordinator at Michigan and Florida, building up a reputation as a top recruiter, before being hired as Maryland head coach at age 37. He went 10-15 in two seasons at Maryland, but his tenure ended abruptly amid scandal. On May 29, 2018, offensive lineman Jordan McNair collapsed during conditioning drills because of heat-related illness. McNair died on June 13. An independent investigation determined that athletic trainers on the scene did not follow proper procedures. Durkin was not found responsible for McNair's death, but he was fired in October after having been placed on administrative leave to start the season. - AP College Football

Lane Kiffin, who just won his second Conference USA Championship in the last three years at Florida Atlantic, is bringing his exciting brand of football to Ole Miss, as athletics director Keith Carter announced him as the Rebels' 39th head coach on Saturday. A public introduction, presented by Oxford Orthopaedics, will take place Monday at 1 p.m. CT at The Pavilion at Ole Miss. The event will be open to the public and broadcast live on SEC Network, in addition to OleMissSports.com and Ole Miss Football Twitter and Facebook channels.

Kiffin, who arrives in Oxford after three seasons in the same position at FAU, has more than 10 years of head coaching experience, including eight years at the NCAA level where he has posted an all-time record of 61-34. "I couldn't be more excited to welcome Coach Kiffin to the Ole Miss family," Carter said. "As we entered this process, we were looking for energy, innovativeness and a program builder who could excite our student-athletes and fans. Coach Kiffin checked every box and is a home run for our program. I look forward to locking arms with him to take Ole Miss Football to a championship level." - Mississippi Football

Mississippi fired football coach Matt Luke on Sunday, three days after his third non-winning season ended with an excruciating rivalry game loss. Athletic director Keith Carter said in a statement the decision to change coaches was made after evaluating the trajectory of the program and not seeing see enough "momentum on the field." "While improvements were evident in certain aspects of the program, we are judged ultimately by our record, and, unfortunately, we did not meet the standard of success that we expect from our program," Carter said. Luke, a former Ole Miss offensive lineman and assistant coach, was elevated to interim head coach about two weeks before preseason practice started in 2017 when Mississippi fired Hugh Freeze.

Luke guided the Rebels, who were already banned from the postseason by the NCAA, to a 6-6 record that helped him land a four-year deal through 2021. With the program facing another bowl ban in 2018 and other NCAA sanctions, Luke and the Rebels went 5-7. Ole Miss finished this season 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Southeastern Conference, including a 21-20 loss on Thanksgiving night to Mississippi State. Ole Miss receiver Elijah Moore scored a potential tying touchdown with seconds left in the Egg Bowl, but was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after he pretended to urinate in the end zone like a dog. - AP College Football

Mississippi coach Matt Luke can't help but smile when he discusses the development and performance of his freshman class, especially at the skill positions. Ole Miss freshmen Snoop Conner, Jerrion Ealy and quarterback John Rhys Plumlee combined to rush for five touchdowns Saturday as the Rebels defeated New Mexico State 41-3. "Plumlee made plays consistently and managed the game well," Luke said. "He's still got some plays he can make, but it's fun to see our freshman running backs making plays for us."

Plumlee directed scoring drives on four of the opening five possessions as the Rebels (4-6) built an insurmountable 24-3 halftime lead. Plumlee rushed for 177 yards on 12 carries with scoring runs of 2 and 18 yards and finished 11 of 17 for 124 passing yards in a dominating performance that ended in the third quarter. "I was fortunate to break the line of scrimmage a few times," Plumlee said. "At the next level, there aren't as many guys you have to outrun, or make miss, or bob and weave to get free." Conner rushed for 109 yards on 13 carries, featuring a stylish 30-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 1-yard touchdown run in the third period. Ealy finished with 71 yards on 14 carries, including a touchdown run of 5 yards. The Rebels finished with 606 yards in total offense, including 447 on the ground. - Mississippi/AP College Football
