It was a remarkable run, but Kenneth Walker III has decided his days at Michigan State have ended. The consensus All-American announced on social media Thursday that he will not play in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30 as he prepares for next spring's NFL Draft. After transferring last year from Wake Forest, Walker proved immediately the impact he would have for the Spartans in 2021, scoring on a 75-yard run on the first play from scrimmage as he gained 264 yards and added four touchdowns in the season-opening win over Northwestern. Walker went on to rush for 1,636 yards, second in the nation, and score 18 rushing touchdowns in 12 games. He became the first Michigan State player to win the Walter Camp Player of the Year and the Doak Walker Award. He also finished sixth overall in the Heisman Trophy voting, the best showing for a Spartan since 1988. - Detroit News

The Big Ten Ameche-Dayne Running Back of the Year winner, Walker was named a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection. Walker ranks second in the nation and first among Power Five players at 1,614 rushing yards and 134.5 yards per game, and his 18 rushing touchdowns are tied for fifth in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Kenneth Walker rushed for 197 yards and five touchdowns, helping No. 8 Michigan State top No. 6 Michigan 37-33 for a thrilling comeback win on Saturday. The Spartans (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) trailed by nine at halftime and 30-14 with 6:47 left in the third quarter before Walker boosted his chances of winning the Heisman Trophy. Walker's fifth touchdown - a 23-yard run - lifted the Spartans to a 37-33 lead with 5:08 remaining. The Wolverines (7-1, 4-1) forced a final punt and had the ball at their 33 with 1:15 and no timeouts left. After a roughing-the-passer penalty gave them the ball at midfield, Michigan State cornerback Charles Brantley sealed the victory by picking off a floating pass from Cade McNamara.

McNamara threw for 383 yards and two touchdowns, but his interception was costly, as was freshman quarterback J.J. McCarthy's lost fumble in the fourth quarter. The rivals were on the same field with 7-0 or better records for the first time, matching up as top-10 teams for the first time since 1964. Michigan State's win puts the program in contention for the Big Ten conference championship and potentially a spot in the College Football Playoff. Michigan's loss leaves Jim Harbaugh with a 3-4 record against Michigan State as a coach, putting even more pressure on him to get a win against No. 5 Ohio State next month. The Wolverines led 23-14 after an entertaining first half. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Kenneth Walker and Jayden Reed combined to score five touchdowns in the first half to help No. 17 Michigan State build a 26-point lead and the Spartans went on to beat Western Kentucky 48-31 on Saturday night. The Spartans (5-0) have won their first five games for the first time since starting 8-0 in 2015, when they ended up earning a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Hilltoppers (1-3) moved the ball through the air effectively, but settled for three field goals in the first half and struggled to stop Michigan State until the second half when it was too late.

Reed returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown and had 46-yard reception for another score in the first quarter, helping the Spartans take a 21-10 lead. Walker ran for his second and third scores in the second quarter, putting Michigan State ahead 42-16. He finished with 126 yards rushing, a week after being held to 61 yards in an overtime win over Nebraska. Payton Thorne was 20 of 30 for a career-high 327 yards yards and a touchdown for the Spartans. Bailey Zappe, who was 46 of 64 for a career-high 488 yards, threw two touchdown passes early in the fourth quarter to pull Western Kentucky within two touchdowns. Jerreth Sterns set career highs with 17 catches for 186 yards and had a touchdown reception for the Hilltoppers. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Michigan State's Kenneth Walker III turned in the best rushing performance in a season opener in seven years when he went for a career-high 264 yards against Northwestern. Walker's total in the Spartans' 38-21 win Friday was the highest in an opener since South Florida's Marlon Mack went for 275 yards against Western Carolina in 2014. Walker had the highest rushing total in an opener against a fellow Football Bowl Subdivision opponent since West Virginia's Kay-Jay Harris ran for 337 yards against East Carolina in 2004.

Walker had a 75-yard touchdown run on Michigan State's first play from scrimmage, and his four rushing TDs were the most by a Spartan since 2010. The Wake Forest transfer was the first MSU player to go over 200 yards since Le'Veon Bell had 266 against Minnesota in 2012. Three other players had 200-yard games in Week 1: Duke's Mataeo Durant had a school-record 255 in a loss to Charlotte, North Texas' DeAndre Torrey had a career-high 244 against Northwestern State, and Missouri's Tyler Badie had a career-high 203 against Central Michigan. - AP College Football

When Kenneth Walker III entered the transfer portal this spring and Michigan State coaches contacted him, they spoke about the future by also relating it to the past. Walker was at Wake Forest back then, fresh off two seasons in which he ran for 17 touchdowns. That's 17 more than any Michigan State running back managed in Mel Tucker's first season last fall. Tucker and the Spartans coaches wanted him to help fix it, to get the backfield back to the way it used to be. "They were telling me a lot about how we run the ball here, how things are here," Walker said. "Not even just on the field but the fans and everything and the culture here." On Thursday, Walker beamed as he spoke of the opportunity in front of him now. It was the first day of fall camp at Michigan State, the first of relative normalcy for Tucker after all the starts and stops of last year.

Last year's 2-5 season served as a feeling-out process for a new coach and an inherited roster. More than 20 players transferred out, and Tucker went to the recruiting trail and transfer portal to hand-select skill sets and personalities to build around. Walker was one of his top choices. "He was a great addition," Tucker said. "We saw him in the spring. He's a difference-maker. He's picked up where he left off." After rushing for exactly 579 yards each of the past two seasons on 5.3 yards per carry, Walker is the favorite to take a bulk of the carries in a backfield that features returning players Elijah Collins, Connor Heyward and Jordon Simmons as well as Auburn transfer Harold Joiner. - Lansing State Journal

You didn't have to watch Kenneth Walker III carry the ball more than a couple times Saturday to realize the Wake Forest transfer is a guy who can carry the rock at the Big Ten level. "I'll tell you what, he's a complete player. And I think you can see that today," Tucker said Saturday of Walker. Elijah Collins is a pretty good playmaker, too, if he returns to his 2019 form. He said this past week that a bout with COVID-19 set him back last season. Sophomore-to-be Jordon Simmons showed himself to be a capable prospect in the fall. Auburn transfer Harold Joiner III is set to join the team this summer. That's an intriguing backfield. One that ought to be formidable, even if crowded. It puts the onus on MSU's offensive line to finally be solid for the first time in six seasons. Because from a depth-of-talent standpoint, this should be the Spartans' best backfield since 2011. Walker, I think, gives this tantalizing group some certainty. - Lansing State Journal

From Lorenzo White in the George Perles era to Mark Dantonio's days when the likes of Javon Ringer and Jeremy Langford were piling up yards and touchdowns, the Spartans have always had a powerful running attack that more often featured a standout back. Tucker is hoping to get some of that back this season and one of the newest arrivals might just become the latest workhorse for the Spartans. After scoring 13 touchdowns in just seven games at Wake Forest last season as a sophomore, Kenneth Walker III transferred to Michigan State and is already turning heads just more than a week into his first spring with the Spartans.

"He's the same guy that we saw on tape," Tucker said of Walker. "He gives great effort, he's strong, has got great quickness, he has balance and body control, he can change direction, run through the smoke and has good hands. He's a tireless worker. I haven't seen him loaf one time and a drill. He hasn't loafed in our group work or team work. Every rep, he makes the most of it and I'm glad we have him." It's easy to see why Tucker and running backs coach William Peagler liked Walker so much. His 13 touchdowns last season tied for third in the ACC and his average of 72.4 yards a game was 10th. In three straight games late in the season against Virginia, Campbell and N.C. State, Walker ran for more than 100 yards in each while scoring a total of seven touchdowns. - Detroit News

Mel Tucker dipped back into the transfer portal to help boost Michigan State football's backfield. The Spartans landed a commitment from Wake Forest transfer running back Kenneth Walker III on Tuesday, their fifth player inbound to East Lansing from the portal since the 2020 season ended Dec. 12. The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder from Arlington, Tennessee, played two years with the Demon Deacons before opting out Dec. 8 and skipping their final two games. As a sophomore, he ran for 579 yards and 13 touchdowns, which was tied for 10th in the Football Bowl Subdivision this season. Walker leaves Wake Forest with 1,158 yards rushing and 17 TDs. He had eight carries for 24 yards against MSU in the Spartans' 2019 Pinstripe Bowl win over the Demon Deacons. - Lansing State Journal

One half of Wake Forest's "Thunder and Lightning" running back combination has entered the transfer portal. Kenneth Walker III, who finished his sophomore season after opting out before the final regular-season game with Louisville on Dec. 12 because of COVID-19 concerns, has entered his name into the portal. Sophomore safety Trey Rucker also has entered the portal. Walker played in the Deacons' first six games, rushing for 13 touchdowns and 579 yards, as he and Christian Beal-Smith powered their rushing attack. - Winston Salem Journal

Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson says running back Kenneth Walker III has informed the coaching staff that he plans to opt out of the remainder of the season. Walker is the Demon Deacons' No. 2 rusher at 579 yards and has 13 rushing touchdowns. His decision comes as Wake Forest prepares to play its first game in nearly a month this weekend at Louisville after being on hold due to coronavirus issues. Clawson said Tuesday some players had decided to opt out and later changed their minds. He said the team would be open to Walker returning if he changed his mind and went back through required safety protocols to rejoin the team. - AP College Football

Kenneth Walker III ran for three touchdowns, Gavin Holmes scored on a 32-yard interception and Wake Forest extended its winning streak to four, overpowering Syracuse 38-14 Saturday. Walker carried 16 times for 79 yards. He scored on runs of 1, 20 and 5 yards for the Demon Deacons (4-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference.) The loss was the fourth straight for the Orange (1-6, 1-5). Sam Hartman completed 19 of 33 for 250 yards and one touchdown, an 81-yard pass play to Jaquarii Roberson, who caught seven passes for 130 yards. Christian Beal-Smith ran for 87 yards.

Wake Forest, which led 17-7 at the half, blew the game open in the third quarter. Hartman connected with Roberson and just nine seconds later Holmes's interception return made it 31-7. Walker's 5-yard scoring run put the game on ice. The pick six was the third of the season for the Demon Deacons, tied for the nation's best, and the team's 11th interception of the year, which leads college football. Rex Culpepper was 15 of 27 for just 85 yards and one touchdown for Syracuse, a 21-yard connection with Nykeim Johnson, who set up the Syracuse score with a 26-yard punt return. He also threw two interceptions. Cooper Lutz, making the first start of his career, had 83 yards. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Kenneth Walker III had 123 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead 75-yard scoring, run, and Wake Forest beat Virginia 40-23 Saturday. On the first play from scrimmage after Brian Delaney's 32-yard field goal that pulled Virginia into a tie at 23-all early in the fourth quarter, Walker took a handoff, bounced left, broke free from a Virginia tackler and raced down the left sideline. Walker's run provided a big momentum shift, coming only seconds after Virginia, which fell behind 14-0 in the game's first four minutes, seemed to have found a way to stop the Wake offense. Virginia's Perris Jones muffed the ensuing pooch kickoff while attempting to make a fair catch, setting up Walker for a 4-yard TD run that put the Demon Deacons (2-2, 1-2 ACC) in control for good.

Prior to Walker's 75-yard run, the Cavs (1-3, 1-3 ACC) had shut down the Wake running game and kept consistent pressure on Sam Hartman, who was sacked three times. The Deacons had suffered a 45-42 loss at N.C. State in their previous ACC game. Wake finished with 174 yards rushing on 42 attempts. The Deacons were hampered by 12 penalties for 119 yards. Hartman did create time to hit on some long pass plays. The sophomore completed 16 of 27 passes for 309 yards and one TD. - Wake Forest/AP College Football
