Record-setting tight end Michael Mayer has played his last game for Notre Dame. As widely expected, Mayer announced Wednesday he will skip the Dec. 30 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl against No. 19 South Carolina as he begins preparations for the 2023 NFL Draft. The projected first-rounder plans to start ramping up those workouts on Jan. 2 in California. A draft-eligible junior and fiery team captain, Mayer had eight catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns (24 and 22 yards) in a Nov. 26 loss at USC. That pushed his career totals to 180 receptions for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns, all of which represent the most in program history by a tight end.

Mayer had at least one catch in all 36 games he played in his Notre Dame career. The Irish went 28-8 with Mayer in the lineup as he sat out just once (Virginia Tech in October 2021) due to a strained hip adductor muscle. Despite facing near-constant double coverage this fall, the Mackey Award finalist hauled in 67 passes from 809 yards and nine touchdowns - all single-season records for an Irish tight end. He converted 66.3 percent of his 101 targets as a junior, dropping just four passes while working with inexperienced quarterbacks Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne. "The first reason I picked Notre Dame was the NFL," Mayer told ESPN ahead of Thursday's College Football Awards show. "It was on my mind a very, very long time. I saw a lot of good tight ends in the NFL from Notre Dame. That was one of the main reasons I went there." - South Bend Tribune

2022 WALTER CAMP FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: DL Isaiah Foskey, Notre Dame,...Foskey piled up 11 sacks for the second consecutive season from his defensive end position and broke the Notre Dame career sack record in 2022. The Antioch, California, has posted 26.5 sacks in his career, besting the school record that stood since 2004. His 11 sacks tied for fourth in FBS this year and he led the Irish with 14 tackles for loss and six quarterback hurries. One of the most consistent defenders on the team, Foskey logged at least three tackles in 10 of Notre Dame's 12 games this season including five at North Carolina (with 1.5 sacks and two hurries) and another five at No. 5/5 Southern Cal with 1.5 sacks. - Notre Dame Football

From the moment he arrived at Notre Dame, Isaiah Foskey's first-step quickness always stood out. It came as little surprise then on Thursday afternoon when Foskey, the school's all-time leader in sacks, announced he was declaring for the NFL Draft and would skip the Dec. 30 Gator Bowl against No. 19 South Carolina. The move would allow the star pass rusher to get a head start in preparations for the professional level. A fourth-year junior who broke Justin Tuck's career sack record on Senior Day against Boston College, Foskey added 1.5 sacks in his final college outing, a 38-27 loss to USC and Heisman Trophy favorite Caleb Williams.

"He didn't come back just to break the (sack) record," Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said on Senior Day. "He came back to win a national championship. He didn't win a championship this year, but what he did for this program...to me will be the reason why we do win a national championship." Foskey, 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, played through nagging injuries this season that saw his defensive snap count drop to an average of 35 in wins over North Carolina and Brigham Young. He had just 3.5 sacks through the season's first half, and for a time it appeared Foskey might fall short of Tuck's record. - South Bend Tribune

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 14. Isaiah Foskey, rJr, DE, Notre Dame, 6-5, 265, 1,...Despite a second straight loss - this time 26-21 to Marshall - Foskey's game improved with three tackles, an assist and a sack. Previous week, No. 11: Foskey, considered a key on the Irish defense, didn't really stand out in their 21-10 loss at Ohio State. He finished with four tackles but didn't generate much pressure. Much of the reason was he was against excellent OSU tackle Paris Johnson. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 11. Isaiah Foskey, rJr, DE, Notre Dame, 6-5, 265,...Foskey, considered a key on the Irish defense, didn't really stand out in their 21-10 loss at Ohio State. He finished with four tackles but didn't generate much pressure. It was most telling in the fourth quarter when Notre Dame needed a stop and just couldn't get one. Much of the reason could be Ohio State offensive tackle Paris Johnson, whose matchup with Foskey was a focal point going into the game (see No. 12). - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

Of course, on-location acting and authentic pasta weren't the only reasons Isaiah Foskey decided to come back for another season. With the help of new defensive line coach Al Washington, the 6-foot-5, 260-pounder is determined to become a complete player and not just a vaunted pass rusher off the edge. "A lot of people said I wasn't an all-around defensive end," Foskey said. "More like a third down-type of defensive end, just get to the quarterback." That's the main reason Foskey said he received a second-round grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Board when he entered his name as a possible early entrant last December. "I want to show everyone I'm an all-around defensive player," Foskey said. "I can stop the run, get to the quarterback when I usually do. I want to see my name as an all-around defensive end."

Asked what stands out the most about Foskey, Washington goes right to the heart of the matter. "I think passion, if you will," Washington said. "We all have passion. I think it's enhanced when you feel you are in the right place at the right time." Back from his world travels, Foskey believes he's right where he should be at this point in his development. "You don't have anything weighing you down," Washington said. "If you can rid yourself of those things, then I think you can reach another level of passion. Because I think everybody's passionate deep down inside." - South Bend Tribune

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud smiled Wednesday as he downplayed a question about Notre Dame sack leader Isaiah Foskey and the infamous blocking sled. You know, the one with a picture of Stroud in his No. 7 jersey on the front of it. The one that sent Buckeyes fans into a lather, especially since it was released July 15 through Notre Dame football's official Twitter account. "Yeah, I mean, that's cool," Stroud said Wednesday while holding court for more than an hour at Big Ten Football Media Days. "I don't have too many words about that. It's cool to see that they're thinking about me. I'm thinking about them."

Stroud, a Heisman Trophy frontrunner from Inland Empire, Calif., made it clear he has no quarrel with his opposite number as Sept. 3 and their season-opening showdown at Ohio Stadium nears. "He's a great player," Stroud said of Foskey. "He's a Cali guy. So, you know I respect that, him being from northern California (Antioch). I'm from southern California. I respect where he comes from and the plays that he does make as a good defensive end." Both Stroud and Foskey are projected to go in the first round at the 2023 NFL Draft. The quarterback, understandably, has been watching plenty of game tape on Notre Dame, so he was ready with a scouting report. "Sets the edge really hard, he can do it all," Stroud said of Foskey. "He can get off the ball fast. Definitely, he's a great player, so I'm excited to play against him." - South Bend Tribune

Like Iowa State's Will McDonald, Notre Dame defensive end Isaiah Foskey was wise to eschew the loaded 2022 crop of edge rushers and hold off for at least another year. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Foskey has a ton of scheme versatility. He could play with his hand in the dirt in a 4-3 or come off the edge standing up in a 3-4 and excel at both. The 2022 season offers him the chance to really break out and make a name for himself outside the shadow of other draft hopefuls at his position. - Irish Sports Daily

When pro scouts were watching tape of ND's 2021 NFL Draft prospects, invariably they'd get distracted by safety Kyle Hamilton and defensive end Isaiah Foskey, both juniors in 2021. Foskey was second on the team to fifth-round draft choice Ade Ogundeji in sacks (4.5) and QB hurries (5) in 2020, despite being a part-time player. As a starter in 2021, those numbers could increase significantly for the 6-5, 257-pounder. The spring and summer is about becoming a complete defensive end, not just a pass-rush specialist. So if you hear Foskey drawing praise for his ability to defend against the run in training camp, this is the trajectory that not only will keep the scouts coming back to watch the tape, it will help give new defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman the chance to field an elite defense in his first season at ND. - South Bend Tribune
