NOV 21 MISSOURI VALLEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE: DB Marcus Hooker, Youngstown State - Hooker came on the in the second quarter and made a huge impact for the Penguins finishing with two interceptions in YSU's 28-21 come-from-behind win over Southern Il linois. Hooker also had four tackles in the game. His first interception came just before halftime to stop a potential SIU scoring drive. He picked off Nic Baker to seal the win with 28 seconds remaining. Former Ohio State safety Marcus Hooker announced Friday that he is transferring to Youngstown State. The announcement came nearly a month after he put his name in the transfer portal, leaving the Buckeyes after four seasons. Hooker once held a prominent role in Ohio State's secondary, starting the first half of the season in 2020 at free safety before being passed on the depth chart by Josh Proctor. His spot in the rotation was further diminished after his second drunk driving arrest last spring, leadin g to a months-long suspension that sidelined him for all of spring practice.While returning to the team in the summer, he was largely limited to a role on special teams in 2021, appearing on defense in only three games. He finished with nine tackl es. Hooker was the last of Ohio State's scholarship transfers to settle on a school, as well as the second to end up at a Football Championship Subdivision program after former Buckeyes linebacker K'Vaughan Pope announced last month that he was heading t o Tennessee State. - Columbus Dispatch

Marcus Hooker's uneven Ohio State football career has apparently reached its conclusion. Cleveland.com confirmed a 247 Sports report that Hooker has entered the transfer portal. The senior safety became the fourth Buckeye to submit his intent to transfer since the Spring Game and the 10th on defense to do so since the end of last season. Hooker appeared on the verge of a breakthrough in 2020 when he beat out Josh Proctor for the free safety job to open the season. That position remained an area concern all season, however. When Hooker was injured late in the season, Proctor reclaimed the starting job and held it through the national championship game.In the offseason, Hooker was arrested for the second time in his career for a drunk driving inci dent. He pled guilty to operating a vehicle while impaired and received a three-day suspended jail sentence, had his driver's license suspended for one year with limited driving privileges and paid a $375 fine. Hooker was originally suspended indefinitel y but remained with the program and on scholarship. He played mostly special teams in 2021. - Raleigh News Observer

Ohio State coach Ryan Day said Marcus Hooker has "paid his dues" after an offseason drunk driving arrest and is eligible to play at the start of the season. Hooker, a junior safety, was suspended indefinitely following his arrest shortly before the start of spring practices. Hooker pleaded guilty to one count of operating a vehicle while impaired in Franklin County Municipal Court on April. It was the second drunk driving-related arrest of Hooker's OSU career. "He went through a tough time, but he's lea rned a lot from it and paid his dues and went through a bunch of different programs," Day said. "We support Marcus and he's back on the team." Hooker started Ohio State's first five games last season, recording 15 tackles and an interception. Ohio State football coach Ryan Day said the program will let the legal process play out before making further decisions about Marcus Hooker after the safety's arrest for operating a vehicle while impaired last weekend. However, Day left open the possibil ity of repercussions beyond the current indefinite suspension. This is Hooker's second arrest for a similar charge, following one in the summer before his freshman season in 2018. "We're very disappointed and take what happened very, very seriously," Day said. "We're gonna let the process play out, though he is suspended right now indefinitely. As things move forward, we'll make the decisions as we go. But wanted to get all the information first before we did anything."According to a Columbus Pol ice report and online court records, Hooker was found unresponsive in a McDonald's drive-thru near Delasmut Ave. and W. 5th Ave. in Columbus with his foot on the brake and the vehicle in drive. Officers attempted to wake Hooker by "physically rock the ve hicle side to side and operate the air horn on the cruiser."
