East Carolina quarterback Holton Ahlers was named MVP of the annual all-star game after completing 9-of-12 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown for the American team. "It feels great. I just wanted to come out here and show what I can do, show that I can hang, show that I deserve a spot in this league," Ahlers told NFL Network's Bridget Condon after the game. "Offensive line blocked great when I was in, the receivers caught the ball really well and we just moved the ball. "I missed a few throws. I didn't have a perfect game. I did feel like I played really well. Showcased my skills all week. Not just this game, but when the scouts were out here, I felt like I performed really well all week. I was just ready to come out here and show the world what I can do."

The game capped off a week-long event for the participating 2023 NFL Draft prospects, including practices in front of 300-plus NFL scouts and NFLPA U sessions on the business of football. The American team was led by former NFL head coach Jeff Fisher, who earned the victory over Eddie George, coach of the National team. George, currently the Tennessee State head coach, played for Fisher during his career with the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans. - NFL Network

After a standout performance in the Birmingham Bowl win, East Carolina quarterback Holton Ahlers continued his hot streak with his performance in the Hula Bowl Saturday, where he was named Player of the Game. Ahlers was named the MVP after throwing a 100% completion percentage going 10 for 10 for 57 yards, 22 rushing yards and a touchdown pass. His touchdown pass was a 22-yarder to Michael Ezeike from UCLA. They were on the team named Kai, with the other team called Aina. Ahlers' team ended up winning the bowl game, 16-13. - WNCT, TV9 - Greenville

Holton Ahlers threw a Birmingham Bowl-record five touchdown passes and accounted for a game-record six TDs to help East Carolina beat Coastal Carolina 53-29 in the TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl at Protective Stadium. Ahlers, selected the game MVP, threw for 300 yards on 26-of-38 passing, rushed for 37 yards and a touchdown and caught a pass for 14 yards for the Pirates (8-5). Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall, the three-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year who entered the transfer portal this month, wasn't as fortunate.

Presumably, McCall's final play in a Coastal Carolina uniform came on a 9-yard touchdown run. He was hit while tumbling into the end zone and never returned to the game. Jarrett Guest replaced him in the first half and played most of the second half. McCall's run gave Coastal Carolina (9-4) a 14-10 lead. By halftime, though, Chanticleers were in a 24-14 hole. Coastal Carolina was fortunate to only be down 10 at halftime. East Carolina had six drives in the first half with four finishing in scores. One ended with a fourth-down stop by Coastal Carolina and the other finished with the Pirates running out the final 35 seconds of the half. Ahlers was accurate on throws of all depths, connecting on 17 of 22 passes for 213 yards with touchdown passes of 27 and 11 yards to Isaiah Winstead. ECU running back Keaton Mitchell was also effective, carrying the ball 10 times for 107 yards with a 1-yard touchdown run. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Less than an hour after the East Carolina football team pulled off its most important win of the season, Holton Ahlers spoke about the end. Aware that his time playing quarterback for ECU is fading, Ahlers said he made sure to take note of his entrance into Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium and the feeling of playing under the lights in front of a lively crowd. One home game remains on the 2022 schedule, a Nov. 19 date with Houston, and Saturday marked the fifth-year senior's penultimate game in Greenville. And while Ahlers spoke of his time here, a thought occurred to me. The Pirates, and everyone who invests time and energy in following this team, should be thankful that Ahlers is still around. ECU doesn't beat a Central Florida team that was receiving votes in the national polls the way it did on Saturday without a quarterback of his caliber.

He gave his receivers opportunities to make plays all game and his coach-like understanding of everything going on around him was important as the Pirates ripped apart the Knights' vaunted defense. It was Dec. 4, 2021, a Saturday, when Ahlers announced he would be returning for his fifth season at ECU. In the days leading up to games this year, some opposing coaches have joked that Ahlers has seemingly been around forever. He has certainly been a longtime fixture under center for the Pirates, and Saturday's performance showed why he belongs back there. His decision to return stamped out any question of who would play quarterback for the Pirates in 2022. His decision also pushed the pause button on the rest of the quarterback room's ascent to the field on game day. The rostered quarterbacks would spend another season lying in wait as the veteran exhausted his eligibility. - Daily Reflector

Holton Ahlers ran for a score and threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter as East Carolina jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a 34-13 victory over UCF on Saturday night. Freshman Andrew Conrad's 28-yard first-quarter field goal and Ahlers' 3-yard touchdown run gave East Carolina (5-3, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) a 10-0 lead midway through the second period. Ahlers connected with C.J. Johnson for a 39-yard touchdown and a 17-0 advantage before freshman Colton Boomer kicked a 27-yard field goal on the final play of the half to get UCF (5-2, 2-1) on the scoreboard.

The Knights pulled within 17-10 on their first possession of the second half when Isaiah Bowser scored on a 3-yard run at the end of a 10-play, 74-yard drive. But Keaton Mitchell answered with a 6-yard touchdown run, Conrad added a fourth-quarter field goal and Mitchell capped the scoring with a 37-yard run to preserve the win for the Pirates. Ahlers completed 30 of 36 passes for 311 yards for East Carolina. Johnson hauled in 11 passes for 140 yards. Mitchell finished with 105 yards on 16 carries.   C.J. Johnson caught a two-point conversion pass from Holton Ahlers in the fourth overtime and East Carolina outlasted Memphis 47-45 for a wild homecoming victory on Saturday night. Memphis failed to score in the fourth overtime. Excluding East Carolina's 19-second possession at the end of the fourth quarter, nine of the last 10 possessions ended with the offense in the end zone. The teams traded touchdowns late in the fourth quarter, scored two each in overtime, and three of four two-point conversions were successful in the third and fourth overtimes. East Carolina trailed for much of regulation but got a big boost from safety Julius Wood, whose 47-yard interception return in the third quarter tied the game for the first time at 20-all. Wood also had 11 tackles, six solo.

Late in the fourth quarter, East Carolina drove 75 yards ending in Keaton Mitchell's run for 1 yard for a TD and a 30-23 lead with 1:45 remaining. The lead didn't last long as Memphis drove 75 yards, capped by a 13-yard TD pass from Seth Henigan to Joseph Scates to send the game to overtime. Mitchell had 149 yards rushing and three touchdowns for ECU (4-3, 2-2 American). Ahlers completed 26 of 34 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Winstead had nine receptions for 154 yards and a touchdown. For Memphis (4-3, 2-2), Henigan was 27-of-37 passing for 407 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Scates caught five for 112 yards and a touchdown. There were three punts in the game - two by ECU and one by Memphis. - East Carolina/AP College Football

Holton Ahlers threw six touchdown passes, four to C.J. Johnson, and East Carolina rolled to a 48-28 victory over South Florida on Saturday. The American Athletic Conference announced Tuesday that they moved the game from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida to Boca Raton due to the anticipated impacts of Hurricane Ian on the Tampa Bay area. Ahlers threw a strike to Ryan Jones at the 10-yard line, who then steamrolled over a defender and into the end zone to cap a 21-yard touchdown and give the Pirates a 28-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Ahlers lofted a 9-yard touchdown pass to Johnson in the end zone that stretched the Pirates' advantage to 48-21 with 3:40 remaining in the third. Ahlers was 31-of-41 passing for 465 yards.   When East Carolina quarterback Holton Ahlers arrived on the campus of East Carolina, the Greenville native knew that there would be some amount of pressure placed on a local kid playing the most important position in town. He was right. He was also ready. "I knew when I committed here when I was 17 years old, I knew there was gonna be a lot of pressure here," Ahlers said at the American Athletic Conference media day on Thursday. "But you know, I wanted it to be on me and no one else." Ahlers, entering his fifth and final season with the Pirates, helped guide ECU to its first winning season and a bowl berth since 2014.

The season was also the first winning season for Ahlers since being in high school at D.H. Conley. Now, in his final season, Ahlers hopes he can harness that pressure and turn it into a successful season. "Coach (Mike) Houston came in and has developed a great culture here, a great team culture," Ahlers said. "It's been really good to be a part of it. This year, this is the best team overall that we've had. We just have to go out there and play the way that we know we can play and the rest will take care of itself. "For it being my last year, I am going to enjoy it as much as I can and just really appreciate that there's going to be a lot of lasts for me this year. So I'm just enjoying it. It starts with camp and just getting the team as close as we can be to being ready for that first game and then going out there and playing good the whole season." - Daily Reflector

The Midshipmen punted with 1:24 to play, and Ahlers connected with Snead on a 46-yard pass on the next play. East Carolina (7-4, 5-2) then let the clock run before Daffer's game-winning kick. Ahlers was 27-of-32 passing for 405 yards and threw three touchdown passes. Keaton Mitchell carried the ball 18 times for 94 yards and had a 10-yard touchdown run for the Pirates.   Holton Ahlers passed for 220 yards and began a second-half comeback with a touchdown pass to Audie Omotosho as East Carolina rallied past South Florida 29-14 on a wet Thursday night. The 17-yard touchdown pass brought ECU within a point, 14-13. A second possession ended with three Ahler passes either broken up or hurried in or near the end zone, and a 39-yard field goal attempt on fourth down was wide in driving rain. However, two plays later the Pirates took a 19-14 lead when Malik Fleming jumped a route and intercepted USF's Katravis Marsh, returning it 31 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The Pirates scored a third unanswered touchdown with Keaton Mitchell's 25-yard burst early in the fourth quarter and added a 37-yard Owen Daffler field goal. During the game ECU converted on five of six fourth-down plays. Rahjai Harris carried 22 times for a season-high 100 yards.   East Carolina junior quarterback Holton Ahlers was named to the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, according to an announcement by the organization Thursday. A 2021 preseason All-American Athletic Conference selection by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele's College Football Preview Magazine, Ahlers has already surpassed the 7,000-yard mark in passing in 30 career games. In three seasons with the Pirates, he has completed 556-of-974 passes for 7,093 yards and 51 touchdowns versus 22 interceptions.

Ahlers owns one 500-yard, four 400-yard and 10 300-yard passing outings and has thrown at least one TD pass in 21 of 30 games. He currently ranks fourth on ECU's career total yards (8,153) list, sixth in passing and seventh in completions. Last year, Ahlers threw for 1,921 yards (165-of-269) and 18 touchdowns with nine interceptions. He ranked 25th in the FBS in passing TDs, 26th in completions per game (20.6) and 30th in passing yards per game (240.1). - Daily Reflector

Ahlers' numbers went down in 2020, although that can be primarily attributed to a lower number of games on the schedule. He compiled 1,921 yards and 18 touchdowns through the air, while his ground numbers declined even further, as he totaled just 109 yards and one touchdown. Despite a sharp decline in statistics, there is one metric that says it might not all be on Ahlers. His completion percentage has gone up in each season, from 48% as a freshman, to 60% as a sophomore and 61% as a junior. Ahlers has a shot to make the most of the 2021 season. This will be his third year in Houston's offense, which means he has had plenty of time to learn the nuances of the scheme. 2020 would have typically been a make-or-break year for Ahlers as a junior, but COVID-19 has pushed that critical season back. - The East Carolinian

Recent offseason workouts led by East Carolina football director of strength and conditioning John Williams impacted not only underclassmen looking to make their mark with the Pirates, but also starting quarterback Holton Ahlers. The fourth-year rising junior was one of the main players Houston mentioned as improving his body since the end of the 2020 season in late November. "He is in the best physical shape I've seen him," Houston said of Ahlers after Friday's first spring practice when asked about spring QB repetitions. "He's slimmed down some and really worked on his flexibility. He's more explosive and faster and noticeably improved his body and his athleticism since the fall. That is something with talks with Big John and (offensive coordinator) Donnie (Kirkpatrick) and Holton, this is what he needs to do. He has worked his tail off. "It's a great to have a veteran like that we all believe in. He is the leader of our team and leader of our offense, but you have four other guys who need reps. Holton will get his reps and get his work, but I think it's important we really develop those other guys." - Daily Reflector

After a slow start to the season, Ahlers was able to turn things around in the second half, creating a lethal passing game. Notable games include Nov. 2, against No. 17 Cincinnati, where Ahlers threw for 535 yards and four passing touchdowns. The Pirates fell to the Bearcats 46-43 but Ahlers kept the Pirates in it until the end with his work through the air. ECU went up against No. 25 SMU on Nov 23, and Ahlers threw for 498 yards and an outstanding six touchdowns with zero interceptions. The Pirates lost to the Mustangs 59-51 but once again Ahlers dominated the game on the offensive side.

Ahlers works as a dual threat quarterback being able to move the ball through the air and on the ground as the ball carrier. The 6'3" and 235 pound Ahlers uses his size to give him an effective ground game by nearly matching the size of opposing linebackers. Last season Ahlers ran for 359 yards and scored six touchdowns. For the ECU offense to thrive, Ahlers must start the season strong. If he can attack the opposing defense in the air with the success he had in the second half of last year, ECU will have more success. Success will also come if Ahlers can continue his strong run game. With football changing, many dual threat quarterbacks are finding success and Ahlers can be one of them. - The East Carolinian

East Carolina, which followed UCF moving from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference, is cutting at least one sport due to coronavirus pandemic budget issues. The Pirates are looking to trim at least one of 20 sports to offset at $10 million budget deficit, the Charlotte Observer reported that the school's interim chancellor and athletics director announced during a special board meeting Monday. The minimum number of NCAA sports allowed to compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision level is 16. The Pirates could cut up to four while still complying with NCAA rules.

UCF, meanwhile, supports 16 sports and athletics director Danny White has said the school has no plans to cut any of them even if the NCAA approves a waiver to allow it. East Carolina, meanwhile, does not see any other option moving forward. "The financial model is not sustainable," East Carolina interim chancellor Ron Mitchelson said, according to the Observer. East Carolina entered the pandemic on different footing than UCF, with the Pirates struggling financially and the Knights in the midst of a fundraising boom fueled by its success in football and many other sports. While the Pirates will cut at least one sport, they plan to keep competing in the AAC. - Orlando Sentinel

Holton Ahlers scored on a 2-yard run with 3:31 remaining in the game and East Carolina rallied last in a 31-24 victory over Connecticut on Saturday. East Carolina survived a scare when Tyler Snead fumbled at the UConn 2-yard line after a catch that gained 9 yards, but it was recovered by the Pirates and Ahlers scored the game-winner on the next play.

Warren Saba blocked a punt for a touchdown, Horton Ahlers passed for two more and East Carolina held off Old Dominion 24-21 Saturday night. Each team scored a field goal on its first possession, but the tide began to turn when Saba blocked a Bailey Cate punt and recovered the ball for a four-yard touchdown. A series later, Cate pinned the Pirates (3-2) back at the 4 with a 49-yard punt. Demetrius Mauney tore off a 21-yard run to kick off the 96-yard scoring march.

Ahlers teamed with Blake Proehl on a 72-yard TD for a 17-3 halftime lead. The 14-point lead is ECU's largest after a half against an FBS team since the 2015 season. Old Dominion's (1-3) Kesean Strong dove across from the 1 - he also picked up the two-point conversion - with 2:13 remaining as the Monarchs cut the gap to 24-21. ECU was able to run out the clock in four plays for the win and also snap a 10-game road losing streak that began in the 2017 season. - AP College Football
