Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan left the game against No. 24 Illinois early in the fourth quarter after taking a shot to the head. Morgan was hurt when he took off running on a third-down play. Linebackers Isaac Darkangelo and Gabe Jacas converged on him, with Jacas punching Morgan on the right side of his helmet. No penalty was called. Morgan walked off the field with assistance, headed to the medical tent and then was taken to the locker room on a cart with a towel over his head. Athan Kaliakmanis replaced Morgan with the Illini leading 23-14. - AP College Football

Tanner Morgan threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns and Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 103 yards and a score to lead Minnesota to a 34-7 rout over struggling Michigan State in the Big Ten opener for both schools. The Gophers (4-0) are off to their best start since they began the 2019 season 9-0. Minnesota dominated Michigan State (2-2) on both sides of the ball, outgaining the Spartans on offense 508-240 while also grabbing two interceptions and a fumble. "I've got to take my hat off to our players," said Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck. "They just played incredibly hard. I couldn't be more proud of them right now in this moment." Despite missing star receiver Chris Autman-Bell, who is out for the season following a leg injury last week, the Gophers' offense was dominant.

Minnesota did not punt, converted 10 of 12 third-down attempts, had possession of the ball for 42:30 and Morgan hit 10 different receivers. "I've been saying it for a long time now that we have a lot of guys that can go make plays for us," Morgan said. "We saw that today - a lot of guys that were involved in the game plan and made plays. It makes my job really easy." Michigan State appeared ready to rally from a 17-point deficit at the start of the second half by driving to the Minnesota 5-yard line but Thomas Rush punched the ball free from quarterback Payton Thorne and Justin Walley made the recovery. "Every week we emphasize turnovers," Walley said. "Today we had three. That's the amount we should get every week or strive to get every week." The Spartans avoided the shutout when backup quarterback Noah Kim tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Germie Bernard with 17 seconds left. The Gophers scored on their first three possessions to go up 17-0. Morgan, who completed 23 of 26 passes for 268 yards, capped off the next drive when he hit Daniel Jackson with a 23-yard touchdown pass. Matthew Trickett followed with a 26-yard field goal. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Minnesota is scoring at a rate not seen in the Twin Cities for more than a century. The Gophers' 149 combined points against New Mexico State, Western Illinois and Colorado are the most through three games since the 1916 team totaled 169 against South Dakota State, North Dakota and South Dakota. The caveat is that Minnesota's first three opponents are a combined 0-10, and 0-3 Western Illinois is from the Championship Subdivision. Things get real this week when the Gophers visit Michigan State for their Big Ten opener. - AP College Football

Tanner Morgan passed for 287 yards and a score over 2½ quarters and had one of Minnesota's seven rushing touchdowns in a 62-10 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday. Mohamed Ibrahim (23 carries for 130 yards) and Trey Potts (10 carries for 79 yards) kept their comeback from injuries going strong with two scores apiece on the ground for the Gophers (2-0), whose 679 total yards were the third most in program history. Morgan went 14 for 18 passing without a turnover before yielding to backups Athan Kaliakmanis and Cole Kramer for the bulk of the second half. The Gophers posted their highest score in head coach P.J. Fleck's six seasons and their most since a 63-26 victory over Indiana in 2006.

Goldy Gopher's customary commitment to one pushup per point became quite the struggle after the final touchdown, a 30-yard run by reserve Preston Jelen for his first career score. The furry mascot's costume-covered arms barely squeezed out the last couple of repetitions while the students who remained in the stadium at that point boisterously cheered him on. Morgan had his most passing yards since the late-season loss to Wisconsin in 2019. He hit fellow sixth-year standout Chris Autman-Bell five times for 118 yards and tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford for a 45-yard touchdown while crisply spreading the ball all over the field on deep posts, quick outs and of course his trademark slants. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan (6-2, 215) is the key cog in the Gophers' "Encore Four" expected to lead the team in 2022. The quartet of sixth-year seniors on offense who stuck around for one more kick at the collegiate can includes Morgan, running back Mohamed Ibrahim, center John Michael Schmitz and wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell have been in the program since 2017. Morgan, of course, is the key to the offense. Entering his fifth year as starter, he will try to rebound from a season in which the passing game sputtered in losses to Bowling Green and Illinois. Helping in that task will be Kirk Ciarrocca, who is back as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after two years away. Under Ciarrocca, Morgan passed for single-season school records of 3,253 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2019, stats bolstered by the presence of future NFL receivers Tyler Johnson and Rashod Bateman. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Gophers football players launched their own name image and likeness club on Wednesday. The Twin Cities NIL Club will be open to fans, where a $199 membership create an "access pass" for various interactions with players and to view player-created content. Roughly 1,000 memberships will go on sale in July, and revenue will be shared equally among every participating Gophers team member, they said in a letter circulated on social media.

All NCAA athletes have had a calendar year to be compensated by organizations in exchange for work or services, and Minnesota's football team is believed to be the first Gophers team to start its own NIL club. "We have always known that we have some of the best fans in the nation," sixth-year quarterback Tanner Morgan said in a Twitter post. "New we get to show the fans that we care." Gophers players are working with Yoke Gaming, a third-party platform that handles infrastructure for these nascent clubs. Players from Michigan State and Notre Dame represent two existing groups to have partnered with Yoke, a web site that started as an opportunity to connect fans with athletes as athletes play video games. Jeremiah Carter, the U's compliance director, said in an interview Wednesday the U wrote its first NIL policy last summer to provide guidance and "put up as few barriers as possible" on what student-athletes can take advantage of in this new frontier of college sports. - Pioneer Press

Minnesota has won as many as nine games in a season 10 times in its 140-year history, with six of those coming under coach Henry L. Williams from 1900-1905. The Gophers have hit the nine-win mark just four times since 1905, with three of those coming in the last six seasons. Fleck has guided the Gophers to two of those seasons. Quarterback Tanner Morgan had the best season of his career in 2019, under the direction of coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca. That season, he completed 66% of his passes for 3,253 yards, 30 TDs and 7 INTs. In the past two seasons combined (20 games) with coordinator Mike Sanford, Morgan completed 59% of his passes for 3,418 yards, 17 TDs and 14 INTs. Ciarrocca is back in the coordinator role this year. - Daily Camera

While Minnesota's Tanner Morgan is back for a fifth season as the starting quarterback, he'll have a different play-caller this year with the return of Kirk Ciarrocca as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after two years away from the program. Ciarrocca used spring practice to refamiliarize himself with Morgan's strengths and weaknesses, with the hopes of improving on a 2021 season in which Morgan had a 10-9 TD-to-interception ratio. "I tried to erase what I knew about him in 2019 and said, 'OK, I'm gonna start over again,' and just try to get a feel for what he does," Ciarrocca said. Ciarrocca likely will take a long look at backups Cole Kramer and Athan Kaliakmanis during the spring game. Kramer, a fourth-year junior, gives the Gophers a running threat, while Kaliakmanis, a redshirt freshman, has impressed with his passing touch. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Tanner Morgan overcame an interception that was returned for a first-half touchdown, leading Minnesota on three scoring drives after halftime to surge past No. 18 Wisconsin 23-13, take back Paul Bunyan's Axe and give Iowa the Big Ten West Division title Saturday. Morgan, who went 11 for 16 for 199 yards and a third-quarter touchdown pass to Chris Autman-Bell, led the Gophers on the sprint into the end zone to hoist the 73-year-old trophy on their home field for the first time since 2003. As the crowd streamed onto the turf, the rap song “Jump Around” played over the speakers in a taunt of Wisconsin's home-game anthem.

The Gophers (8-4, 6-3) delivered the kind of inspired and stifling performance by their defense that the Badgers (8-4, 6-3, No. 14 CFP) were used to demoralizing their opponents with. They held freshman standout Braelon Allen to 47 yards on 17 rushes and forced Graham Mertz to throw throughout the second half to favorable results. Mertz went 21 for 38 for 171 yards and an interception. Allen topped the 100-yard mark in each of the last seven games, all wins for Wisconsin. The Badgers had 62 rushing yards, after averaging 229 yards on the ground entering the week. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Tanner Morgan has a video on his phone taken recently with his father, who in that moment found enough strength and clarity to deliver a message so typical of him. No excuses when you get back to school, Ted Morgan told his son. Even as he faced death, Ted was thinking of his son and holding him accountable. "It's pretty powerful," the Gophers senior quarterback said this week. Morgan will be in Indianapolis on Thursday representing the Gophers at Big Ten media days, an annual kickoff to the college football season. He goes there after losing his father last week. Ted was first diagnosed with a brain tumor in spring 2020 and had surgery to remove it at Mayo Clinic. His recovery and scans had been encouraging to doctors, but the tumor returned this spring and his condition deteriorated rapidly.

Ted never wanted to know how much time he had left - even when doctors told the rest of his family - because he felt at peace in his faith. That's the lesson that Morgan holds dear and intends to share anytime he talks about his dad. His dad was always a Christian, but his faith became deeply rooted after his diagnosis. He devoted himself completely. Gophers senior quarterback Tanner Morgan says he could always count on his father, Ted, "to point me back in the right direction." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Big Ten reporters predict the Gophers football team will finish in the middle of the pack in 2021. Minnesota was picked to finish fourth in the seven-team Big Ten West division this fall, according to the annual cleveland.com poll released Wednesday. The poll of 34 reporters named Ohio State, the U's opponent to open the 2021 season, as the unanimous pick to win the East division. Voters selected Wisconsin to win the West with 29 first-place votes; Iowa took the other five top votes. The Buckeyes, who will start a new quarterback who has yet to throw a collegiate pass, were picked to beat the Badgers or Hawkeyes on all but one ballots. A single voter picked Wisconsin to top Ohio State. - Pioneer Press

Morgan enters 2021 with an 18-8 mark as the Gophers' starting quarterback and will leave as one of the program's most accomplished passers. His 6,028 career passing yards are already sixth in school history, and he is only 1,419 yards away from taking over the No. 2 spot. He had arguably the best season in Minnesota history in 2019 with 30 touchdowns and 66 percent accuracy, both top single-season marks. But he will need to improve after only completing 58 percent of his passes last season and throwing almost as many interceptions (five) as he did in all of 2019 (seven) while attempting 135 fewer passes. A big reason why Minnesota only went 3-4 last year. - News Gazette Tribune

Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan blames himself first for the 49-24 loss to Michigan this past Saturday. Even though it was offensive coordinator Mike Sanford Jr.'s first game at the helm, even though starting offensive linemen Daniel Faalele and Curtis Dunlap Jr., were out for undisclosed reasons, even though it was the first game in a delayed-but-breakneck Big Ten season, Morgan would readily take sole responsibility for the disappointing show. "At the end of the day, things run through me," Morgan said Tuesday. "And I have to be better for our team to be successful, and I will be." Morgan completed 18-of-31 passes for 197 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The cobbled-together O-line allowed five sacks on Morgan, though the quarterback generously said he could have avoided some of those with better pocket movement. The Gophers' first series looked pretty strong, but the execution fell off after that. Consistently implementing plays at a high level will be Morgan's focus before facing Maryland on the road Friday night - giving the Gophers one less day than usual to correct mistakes. "Looking at what happened is not an opportunity of, 'Woe is me,' because failure is quitting, and that's something that we'll never do," Morgan said. "...We're looking at it as an opportunity to take it and say, 'OK, how can I do better?' What do I need to do better? And how am I going to be better in that aspect?" - Minneapolis Star Tribune

For the second consecutive Gophers home game, the eyes of the college football world will be on TCF Bank Stadium. ESPN announced Saturday night that its "College GameDay" preview show will visit the University of Minnesota on Saturday for the season opener between the No. 24 Gophers and No. 19 Michigan, which will be a national broadcast on ABC (KSTP-Ch. 5) at 6:30 p.m. At stake for the Gophers and Wolverines will be the Little Brown Jug, a trophy that dates to 1903. "College GameDay," which will air from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, visited the university for the first time in last year's regular-season finale, a 38-17 loss to Wisconsin. There will be a much different feel for the visit this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Last Nov. 30, fans packed the Northrop Mall to see Rece Davis, Desmond Howard, Kirk Herbstreit, guest picker Eric Decker and Lee Corso break down the Gophers vs. Badgers. This year, fans won't be permitted to attend the show, and the set location inside TCF Bank Stadium won't allow for public viewing. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

The Gophers finished the 2019 season at 11-2, a history-making year with big wins and big crowds. But the coronavirus pandemic seemed to detour that upward trajectory, first with Big Ten Receiver of the Year Rashod Bateman opting out to focus on the NFL draft and then with the canceled season. But with Jackson and Emilien as potential successors for Bateman and new NFLer Tyler Johnson, with Logan-Redding and Joyner new prospects on a nearly completely turned-over defensive line, the Gophers feel like they can easily find the main road again. Fleck said he thinks even in just a year from now, his deep team can accomplish another 11-win season or better.

That's a bold assertion, considering the unknowns of the upcoming season(s). The Gophers could end up playing in the spring - clashing with the NFL draft - and the fall, posing physical risks of playing two seasons in one calendar year. But not every eligible player is anticipating skipping a spring season for the draft, including senior wildcat quarterback Seth Green and Morgan himself. "Personally, that's not something I'm thinking about," Morgan said. "...I can't really think that far down the line with all the different other stuff because I'm fully 100 percent committed to being the best person, player and quarterback for the University of Minnesota that I can be. And if I worry about that stuff, then I can't fully commit to that." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Quarterback Tanner Morgan was in the locker room preparing for a walkthrough with his Gophers teammates about a week ago, when players starting receiving texts from friends and family, consoling them for a canceled season. Morgan said his first reaction to hearing he wouldn't be playing football this fall was sadness at not being able to do something he has loved since age 6. But he echoed what Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said last week, about the players' belief that the Big Ten made the right call. "Everybody involved from our side at the University of Minnesota and the Big Ten, they did what was right," Morgan said. "...The Big Ten did what they thought was best for player health and safety, and I commend them for being the conference that actually put player health and safety first."

That decision hasn't earned unanimous praise, though. Parents from Iowa, Ohio State, Nebraska and Penn State have spoken out about their disagreement with the decision, sending letters to the conference demanding more transparency about how the conference came to that choice. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields started an online petition asking the conference and Big Ten school administrators to reinstate the season, which has garnered more than 250,000 signatures since Sunday morning. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan made the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list Tuesday. The award, presented annually to the best college football quarterback in the country, has 30 watch list members. Last season, Morgan set the Gophers's single-season records for passing yards (3,253) and passing touchdowns (30). Morgan, a rising junior, was one of 16 semifinalists for this award in 2019, when the Gophers finished 11-2 and No. 10 in the nation. The quarterback is one of nine returners on offense, including receiver Rashod Bateman, who was also a preseason All-America pick. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

The Gophers quarterback will be working with new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Sanford Jr., who joined the program from Utah State in the offseason. One big benefit for Morgan and Sanford is that the offense returns nine of 11 starters, an unprecedented return for a club that ranked No. 4 in the Big Ten in both scoring offense and total offense. Morgan knows having that many starters back can make a huge difference this season. "The experience is huge, and our offensive unit and our team has played a lot of football at a high level," Morgan said. "It's very fortunate that that is something that we have and I'm blessed that I have been able to play a decent amount of football. It definitely helps. But again, there's always ways that we can get better. "So just because we have played football for a while or have the experience doesn't mean we can get complacent. But it definitely helps, it definitely helps the developmental process. Again, we have to continue to strive for perfection knowing we're not going to get there, but ways we can get better, looking forward and not backward."

Morgan said he spent a lot of the offseason focused on being a team leader. "Coach [P.J.] Fleck has done a great job of helping us as leaders be able to apply our culture to our leadership," Morgan said. "He has done a phenomenal job of sending us team meetings in the morning. Those are for optional view, and those are just phenomenal and very inspiring with what we're going through right now. It really helps instill our cultural mind-set, as well." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

With birds chirping, geese honking and the smell of grilled meats coming from the backyard, Ted Morgan expressed gratitude from his home's front porch in Union, Ky. Earlier this month, the father of the Gophers' All-Big Ten quarterback, Tanner Morgan, said he felt fine but was slurring some of his words. There was concern from a family friend, a nurse, and an emergency room doctor that Ted had suffered a stroke. Tests showed Ted had a brain tumor, and he underwent successful surgery to remove most of it at the Mayo Clinic on May 12. "Want to thank everyone reaching out and praying for my Dad throughout his recent battle with a brain tumor," Tanner tweeted May 14. "Please continue praying, because prayer is powerful."

Ted was discharged from the hospital within days and is scheduled to have further treatments in the coming weeks. "I feel great," Ted Morgan said in an interview Wednesday with the Pioneer Press. "I … didn't loose any of my faculties or anything. We know we are going to be fine." Ted said Mayo Clinic Dr. Joon Uhm told him that the negatives of the tumor are "counterbalanced" by how much of the tumor was removed and how well Ted has recovered. "He was just super encouraged," Ted reported. With the coronavirus closing the University of Minnesota campus and suspending the football team's spring practices and workouts, Tanner has been at home in Kentucky to support his family during this trying time. - Pioneer Press

Morgan put up unprecedented numbers last season - more than 3,000 passing yards and 30 touchdowns - to set the bar really high for his redshirt junior season. But the second-team All-Big Ten quarterback should be able to match that output again; it would keep him in the Heisman Trophy conversation and boost his rising NFL draft status. - St. Paul (Minn.)   Tanner Morgan led No. 11 Minnesota to scores on its first three possessions and finished with four touchdown passes, and the Gophers bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 38-22 win over Northwestern on Saturday. The Gophers (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten, No. 10 CFP), who lost at Iowa last week, strengthened their grip on first place in the West Division and clinched their sixth season with 10 or more wins. Morgan, the Big Ten's leading passer, came out firing following a week in the concussion protocol after absorbing back-to-back sacks by the Hawkeyes. The redshirt sophomore, listed as questionable until Saturday morning, has thrown 26 touchdowns this season to set a school record. Morgan threw three TD passes to Rashod Bateman and one to Tyler Johnson against Northwestern (2-9, 0-8).

Morgan zipped a 19-yard TD pass to Bateman in the corner of the end zone to end a 10-play, 56-yard drive on Minnesota's first possession. After Shannon Brooks ran in from 9 yards, Morgan hit Bateman for a 10-yard TD and 21-0 lead. Bateman's other TD catch was a 7-yarder in the third quarter. With quarterback Aidan Smith sidelined (hand), Northwestern turned to Hunter Johnson, who hadn't started since the season opener. Andrew Marty entered early in the second quarter after Johnson went 0 for 2 and was sacked three times. Marty threw a TD pass to Jace James and ran for two scores. Joe Gaziano sacked Morgan for a safety early in the second quarter to get Northwestern on the board. Gaziano added another sack to give him 29 for his career, a school record. - Minnesota/AP College Football

The status of quarterback Tanner Morgan is uncertain for 11th-ranked Minnesota.s game at Northwestern after back-to-back sacks in the last game put the sophomore in the concussion protocol. Coach P.J. Fleck said Tuesday that Morgan has made progress this week, but he has not yet been cleared for action. The Gophers (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten) play the Wildcats (2-8, 0-7) on Saturday, with a one-game lead in the Big Ten West Division on Wisconsin. They finish the regular season at home against the Badgers on Nov. 30. Morgan could be a game-time decision. If he doesn.t play, either Jacob Clark or Cole Kramer would start. They.re both true freshmen.

Morgan was not allowed to finish the most recent game at Iowa, a 23-19 defeat that was the first of the year for the Gophers. After they took possession with 1:52 left, Morgan.s head hit the ground hard when he was sacked by Joe Evans. A.J. Epenesa sacked him on the next play, and Morgan stayed on the ground before the medical staff came to check him out. Morgan was required to be removed from the game for one play because of the clock stoppage for injury, and Clark replaced him. Morgan lobbied on the sideline to return, but Fleck said no, and then Clark.s deep throw on fourth down was intercepted by the Hawkeyes to seal their victory. Fleck said afterward that Morgan appeared woozy. - AP College Football

Minnesota's Jordan Howden picked off Sean Clifford in the end zone with 1:01 left, the third interception thrown by Penn State's quarterback, and the 13th-ranked Gophers held on for a 31-26 victory on Saturday afternoon over the fifth-ranked Nittany Lions for their first win over a top-five team in 20 years. Tanner Morgan passed for 339 yards and three touchdowns to direct a dismantling of Penn State's staunch defense, as Minnesota (9-0, 6-0, No. 17 CFP) not only remained undefeated but stayed on track for its first trip to the Big Ten championship game. The first sellout crowd for the Gophers at home in four years swarmed the field after the clock ran out, reveling in the biggest step forward yet under coach P.J. Fleck in his third season. The Gophers scrambled the College Football Playoff picture, too, after Penn State (8-1, 5-1, No. 4 CFP) emerged with a top-four spot in the first edition of the rankings. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan is 12-2 as a starter, the best record by a Gophers quarterback since 1975, and he's one of the nation's most efficient passers and has a terrific stable of receivers. But the sophomore has never been in a game with such high stakes, so how he handles the atmosphere is key. Morgan has been helped by the three-pronged rushing attack of Rodney Smith, Mohamed Ibrahim and Shannon Brooks, but Penn State is allowing an FBS-best 1.99 yards per carry. - AP College Football

Coach P.J. Fleck had finished celebrating No. 17 Minnesota's 52-10 victory over Maryland on Saturday and again echoed the familiar refrain to reporters that his Gophers concentrate only a week at a time. With the game behind him, and a potential matchup of undefeated Top 25 teams on the horizon, Fleck willingly went into pitch mode for ESPN's "College Game Day" to come to Minnesota on Nov. 9 when the Gophers host Penn State. "I'm really lobbying here," Fleck joked, recalling a conversation with Game Day host Rece Davis. "Well, Rece, we're here. It's a perfect opportunity to do it, and it's unique and creative. It's not the same old, same old. No offense to Alabama and LSU, that's pretty cool. But this, I think, is a unique experience that doesn't happen very often, and hasn't happened ever."

Rodney Smith ran for 103 yards to become Minnesota's career leader in all-purpose yards, Seth Green had two touchdown runs and the Gophers routed Maryland to set up the intriguing matchup in two weeks. Tanner Morgan was 12-of-21 passing for 138 yards and two touchdowns to help the Gophers (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) reach 8-0 for the first time since 1941. Minnesota has the nation's fourth-longest winning streak at 10, trailing Clemson, Ohio State and Appalachian State. The Gophers were national champions when they started 8-0 in 1941. The 5-0 start in conference play is their first since 1961, the last year they earned a trip to the Rose Bowl. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Tanner Morgan threw for 396 yards and four touchdowns, both career highs, to help Minnesota hold off Purdue 38-31 on Saturday. The Golden Gophers (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) have won six straight overall and four in a row outside Minneapolis for the first time since 2003. Purdue (1-3, 0-1) has lost two straight home games and this one was never really close after the Boilermakers lost starting quarterback Elijah Sindelar and All-American receiver Rondale Moore on the same first-quarter play. Sindelar appeared to hurt his left shoulder when he was sacked and Moore appeared to suffer a lower left leg injury while running down the field.

Morgan took full advantage by completing his first 14 passes, throwing for 298 yards in the first half - four short of his previous career best - and running an offense that needed only two quarters to produce nine plays of 16 or more yards. He finished 21 of 22 with no interceptions. It didn't take long for the Gophers to seize control, either. Rodney Smith capped the first possession of the game with a 2-yard scoring run. After the Boilermakers cut the deficit to 7-3, Morgan answered with a 70-yard TD pass to Chris Autman-Bell to make it 14-3. Sindelar and Moore left on Purdue's next series, but Jack Plummer completed the drive with a 7-yard TD pass to Zander Horvath. - Minnesota/AP College Football

The foot injury that Zack Annexstad suffered last week removed all suspense from the Gophers' starting quarterback battle. With Annexstad out indefinitely, Tanner Morgan is written in as the starter for the Aug. 29 opener against South Dakota State and possibly for the rest of the season. "Tanner's played a lot of football for us," coach P.J. Fleck said last weekend, adding that both Morgan and Annexstad are starting caliber. "Tanner's won some huge games for us."

Morgan opened last year as the backup but started the final six games when injuries forced Annexstad to the sideline. Morgan went 4-2, including big victories at Wisconsin and in the Quick Lane Bowl against Georgia Tech. He completed 58.6% of his passes for 1,401 yards, with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2018. - Minneapolis Star Tribune
