  02/04/23 - QB Jake HaenerrSr/2023, Fresno State, 6-0, 207 (DS#10 QB) + More +

Maryland's Chris Ryland kicked four field goals and Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener passed for 139 yards and a touchdown to lead the National team to a 27-10 victory over the American team in the Senior Bowl on Saturday. Haener, a Monte Vista-Danville alum who was named the game's MVP, delivered a 44-yard touchdown pass to Stanford receiver Michael Wilson in the fourth quarter. Haener thrived on a short-handed quarterback situation for the team, completing 12 of 19 passes after setting a Fresno State career record with a 68.1% completion rate.

"I just wanted to come out here and get a win with the guys and cap off a really good week," Haener told NFL Network. "Just have a really good week and get the win. "We found a way to get the win and that was fun." Haener missed four games with an ankle injury this season but returned to help finish off a nine-game winning streak for the Bulldogs. Like the other quarterbacks in the game, he's trying to improve on mid- to- late-round draft projections. "I love proving the doubters wrong," Haener said. "I love the motivation. I love the passion that it brings me. Keep coming with it, man." - San Francisco Chronicle

Jake Haener threw for 184 yards and a touchdown, Nikko Remigio returned a punt 70 yards for a score, and Fresno State defeated Boise State 28-16 to win the Mountain West Conference championship Saturday afternoon. Fresno State (9-4) overcame a 1-4 start to the season and a rash of injuries to win its final eight games, claiming the program's third Mountain West crown. Boise State (9-4), which won 40-20 in the regular-season match-up between the teams, fell to 3-3 in Mountain West title games. Boise State controlled the game early but struggled to find the end zone, clinging to a 3-0 lead late in the first half. But that all changed when Fresno State scored two touchdowns in a span of 2:36 right before halftime.

Remigio's electric return snaking back and forth across the field sparked Fresno State before Cameron Lockridge intercepted the first of two passes, returning it 25 yards to the Broncos' 17-yard line. Three plays later, Jordan Mims scored on a 2-yard run to put the Bulldogs up 14-3. They never relinquished the lead. After Boise State edged within 14-9 in the third quarter, Fresno State tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Jordan Mims rushed for 83 yards and a pair of scores for Fresno State. Boise State's Taylen Green was 17-of-38 passing for 175 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. - Fresno State/AP College Football

A week to week injury designation will not be this week for Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener and several other Bulldogs who sat out a rough loss at UConn. Haener as well as safety Evan Williams, linebacker Ray Scott and right tackle Dontae Bull remain out and will not play in the Mountain West Conference opener at Boise State. "There's a couple more in there, too," coach Jeff Tedford said. "They're all week to week. None of them had to have major surgery, so they won't be out for the whole season, but any time you have those types of things it's going to take a few weeks to recover. It just depends how fast they recover from their injuries. We'll get them back at some time. Hopefully, sooner than later." Haener, who had his right ankle in a boot last week, was injured in the third quarter of the Bulldogs' loss at USC. He could return for an Oct. 15 Homecoming game against San Jose State, when Fresno State will retire jersey No. 15 in honor of record-setting wideout Davante Adams. Or, more likely perhaps, the following week when the Bulldogs open a three-game stretch against struggling teams on the road at New Mexico. - Fresno Bee

Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener suffered a high ankle sprain when he was knocked out of the Bulldogs' 45-17 loss Saturday night at No. 7 USC, and it is not a season-ending injury. Haener, who was injured in the third quarter when sacked by Trojans defensive tackle Solomon Byrd, had X-rays at the stadium before returning to the Bulldogs bench on crutches later in the third quarter. "I think he caught my leg and rolled it and I heard a little pop," Haener said, making his way off the field after the game. "We have to get back and take a look at it, but it's not broken so it doesn't require surgery or anything like that, so that's good news. High ankle sprains sometimes can take a little bit longer so we'll just have to see how it goes," coach Jeff Tedford said. - Fresno Bee

Tedford retired as Fresno State's head coach because of heart-related concerns. When successor Kalen DeBoer accepted the Washington job in December, the Bulldogs reached out to Tedford, who had regained full health. "It was almost like I never left," Tedford said. Quarteback Jake Haener, who entered the transfer portal after DeBoer bolted, decided to remain at Fresno. Haener is the league's most accurate passer (67.1%, with 33 TDs against nine picks). Also staying put are wideout Jalen Cropper (85 catches in 2021), running back Jordan Mims (236 all-purpose yards in theNew Mexico Bowl), and safety Evan Williams.

Haener jots notes on tips, suggestions and observations involving football. The notes are labeled by date and topic, then placed in binders. He has a dozen filled binders at his family's home and another eight in Fresno. One of the entries details a meeting with Tedford when Haener was 9 years old. During a lengthy career, Tedford has coached six quarterbacks who were first-round draft picks. Tedford said Aaron Rodgers, whom he coached for two seasons at Cal, and Haener share many of the same qualities. - Honolulu Advertiser

At some point in the spring, while dueling the Bulldogs defense and coordinator Kevin Coyle, Jake Haener says he knew that was a brain he wanted to pick and he has twice and sometimes three times a week. "He was just throwing a lot of different pressures from me that I had never seen before, that's from the Minnesota Vikings guy and his time in the league," Haener said. "It was a lot of different things that I hadn't seen at the college level that is really 2.0, and I just wanted to sit down with him, talk it through with him and understand it, get a better idea of how defenses are going to attack me this fall and then just talk defense." "The more you learn and know about the game, the better you're going to play. I think the thing that's going to separate me is the mental game and the mental aspect of things and the intangible piece. I've been putting a lot of time on that, just trying to be sharper, be smarter and more mature."

Tedford said that is a critical piece in Haener's development, and more educated risks can pay great rewards. "There are not too many people that can throw the ball like Jake can throw the ball and that work as hard as he works in the film room," Tedford said. "He is completely dedicated to his craft. I don't care if that's with his nutrition, his sleep. The guy is completely dedicated to being the best player he can possibly be." The game is slowing down for Haener, more comfortable with the offense and now opposing defenses. "I really was last year, too, but I just think it's going to be a lot slower for me this year," Haener said. "The game is going to slow down for me and I'm going to take that next step that I've been trying to take. I took that from my first year to my second year and I think my second year to third year is going to be even better. "It's all experience. I've played in some big games now. We've won some big games. I'm excited for what's to come." - Fresno Bee

Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener was selected as the preseason Mountain West offensive player of year on Thursday, Day Two of the conference media days. He was joined on the team by wideout Jalen Cropper, running back Jordan Mims, offensive tackle Dontae Bull and safety Evan Williams. The five Bulldogs selected are their most since 2014 and second most in their 12 years in the conference, behind seven in 2013 including quarterback Derek Carr and wideout Davante Adams. Therein is a challenge for the Bulldogs quarterback and an offense that returns 83% of its offensive production - Fresno State on Wednesday was picked to win the West Division in the conference, with 20 of 28 first-place votes.

"Jalen and I have already talked about it," Haener said. "We want to put up some similar stuff to what Derek and Davante did and just be the best version of ourselves." Carr in 2013 hit 68.7% of his passes for 5,083 yards with 50 touchdowns and only eight interceptions, and Adams caught 131 passes for 1,719 yards and 24 touchdowns. The 68.7%, 5,083 and 50 passing touchdowns by Carr were all school single-season records as were the 131 receptions, 1,719 yards and 24 touchdown receptions by Adams, and those 24 touchdown catches came at a time when the school career record was only 25; Henry Ellard (1979-82), then Charlies Jones (1992-95) and Bernard Berrian (1999-2003). But Haener and Cropper hinted at the best version of themselves and their upside at times last season, and have similarities to Carr and Adams with the Bulldogs' wideout moving outside after lining up in the slot on 94.5% of his snaps in 2021 when he caught 85 passes for 899 yards with 11 touchdowns. - Fresno Bee

Fresno State will take its big expectations for the 2022 football season onto the biggest stage it has ever had, with all 12 of its regular-season games to be televised on a national platform for the first time in school history. That includes what three-plus months out appears to be an outsized opportunity at USC on Sept. 17, which will be on FOX that night at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs' Oct. 8 game at Boise State also could be a candidate to be carried by the primary FOX network, and at this point is one of five Fresno State games slated for FOX, FS1 or FS2.

The TV assignment and kickoff times for those games will be determined during the season 12 days in advance, though a six-day window is also available to FOX. The Bulldogs' season-opener against Cal Poly, which was moved to Thursday Sept. 1, will be televised by FS1, giving quarterback Jake Haener and a high-flying offense that returns 83% of its production from a 10-3 team a chance to make an early national impression. The Bulldogs have one game locked in on FOX, two on FS1, five on one of the FOX networks and four games on the CBS Sports Network, according to the Mountain West Conference, which on Thursday announced the bulk of its national television schedule. Kickoff times for seven of the Bulldogs' games also have been set, and games at UNLV and against Wyoming over Thanksgiving weekend have been moved to Friday nights on Nov. 11 and Nov. 25. - Fresno Bee

The Mountain West Conference will eliminate its two-division format in football for the 2023 season. The conference announced Friday that the two teams with the highest winning percentage will compete in the league championship game. The decision came two days after the NCAA threw out requirements dictating how conferences can determine their champions and the Pac-12 scrapped its two-division format. The two-division format will remain in place for the 2022 season.

A scheduling model and tiebreaking procedures are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Other conferences are expected to follow, most notably the 14-team Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC is looking to implement a new scheduling model as soon as 2023. To have a conference title game, NCAA rules previously required leagues to split into divisions if they could not play a full round-robin schedule. But those rules were scrapped by the NCAA Division I Council. - AP College Football

Jake Haener was once a Washington Husky. Now, it looks like he won't be again. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound quarterback has withdrawn from the transfer portal and will return to Fresno State, according to a report by 247Sports. Haener did not respond to an interview request on Wednesday evening. There were multiple reports last week that Haener would follow head coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ryan Grubb to Washington, where he signed in 2017 and transferred away from two years later. But Haener told The Times in a text last week that "I haven't committed anywhere yet. So you can squash all the speculation from all those people as of now." Consider the speculation sufficiently squashed. Haener is close with new (and old) Fresno State head coach Jeff Tedford, according to the 247Sports report, and there may have been eligibility concerns related to a UW transfer as well. Because Haener has already transferred once, he would have needed a waiver to be immediately eligible at Washington. - Seattle Times

Jake Haener threw for 343 yards with four touchdowns and Fresno State defeated San Jose State 40-9 on Thursday, winning its fourth Mountain West Conference Thanksgiving Day game. Fresno State (9-3, 6-2) ended the first half with back-to-back touchdowns three minutes apart, then opened the second half with a field goal and a touchdown to break away from San Jose State (5-7, 3-5). Haener connected with Juan Rodriguez from six yards out and then with Jordan Mims on a 45-yarder to build a 23-9 halftime lead. In the second half, Haener had touchdown passes of 29 yards to Jalen Cropper and 13 to Ronnie Rivers.

Cropper caught seven passes for 71 yards, Rivers had five catches for 91 yards. Cropper also ran for a TD. Fresno State remains a half-game behind San Diego State in the Mountain West's western division. Matt Mercurio kicked field goals of 31, 26 and 36 yards for San Jose State, which has lost its last three. Nick Starkel was 19-of-42 passing for 260 yards. Haener has passed for 3,810 yards and 32 touchdowns this season. Haener is the seventh Bulldog to have a 3,000-yard passing season. He joins Kevin Sweeney (1984), Trent Dilfer (1992, 1993), David Carr (2001), Paul Pinegar (2005), Derek Carr (2011, 2021, 2013) and Marcus McMaryion (2018). - Fresno State/AP College Football

Jake Haener passed for 306 yards and a touchdown, Jordan Mims rushed for a career-high 186 yards and two scores, and Fresno State handed No. 21 San Diego State its first loss with a 30-20 victory Saturday night. The Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1 Mountain West) raced out to a 20-0 second-quarter lead as they picked up their second win against a ranked team this season. Fresno State had 485 yards of total offense, ending San Diego State's 29-game streak of holding opponents under 450 yards. Haener completed 25 of 42 passes for his sixth 300-yard game this season. After Evan Williams picked off Lucas Johnson and returned it 36 yards to the San Diego State 31, Haener connected with Keric Wheatfall for a 16-yard TD just inside the left pylon 43 seconds into the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 advantage.

Mims had his second straight 100-yard game and became the first running back this season to hit the century mark against the Aztecs. The senior had 97 yards in the first half, including a 13-yard score with 3:53 remaining in the first quarter to cap a 15-play, 86-yard drive. Mims also had a 15-yard touchdown during the fourth quarter to extend Fresno State's lead to 30-13. San Diego State (7-1, 3-1) came into the game second in the nation in third-down percentage defense, fourth against the run and fifth in total defense, but it struggled to keep pace. Fresno State converted 9 of 18 third downs and went three-and-out only three times in 13 drives. Johnson had 280 yards of total offense. The senior quarterback was 14 of 31 for 220 yards, a TD and two interceptions along with 60 yards rushing. Greg Bell, who came into the game third in the Mountain West in rushing, was held to 63 yards on 15 carries. - Fresno State/AP College Football

Jake Haener threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, Jordan Mims ran for 134 yards and a touchdown and Fresno State beat Nevada 34-32 on Saturday. Down 34-26, Nevada's Carson Strong threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Cole Turner to cut the deficit to two points with two seconds left, but the 2-point conversion attempt was caught out of the back of the end zone. The Wolf Pack recovered the onside kick but time expired in the scramble for the ball. Ronnie Rivers' 64-yard touchdown run with 5:08 left in the first quarter gave the Bulldogs (6-2, 3-1 Mountain West Conference) a 7-3 lead and they led the rest of the way. The game featured the two-highest scoring teams in the conference. The teams combined for 984 yards of total offense. Strong completed 49 of 61 pass attempts for 476 yards and four touchdowns for the Wolf Pack (5-2, 2-1). - Fresno State/AP College Football

When the game was on the line, Fresno State kept going to a familiar formula. Jake Haener threw four TD passes in the second half to Jalen Cropper and No. 22 Fresno State rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat winless UNLV 38-30 on Friday night. The Bulldogs (4-1, 1-0 Mountain West) started slow in their return to the AP poll for the first time since 2018 before Haener once again took over the game in the second half.

One week after throwing for 455 yards, including a go-ahead TD pass with 14 seconds left to Jalen Cropper, in a 40-37 win at No. 13 UCLA, that combo delivered again with four TDs in the second half. "I just feel like there's a lot of trust between me and Jake on and off the field," Cropper said. "I feel like just everything we do from on and off the field to whatever we do in our relationship, I think that ties into what we do on the field." Haener connected on scoring strikes of 4, 23 and 25 yards to Cropper on three straight possessions to turn a 21-9 deficit in to a 29-21 lead. Then, after UNLV (0-4, 0-1) battled back to take a 30-29 lead on Daniel Gutierrez's 30-yard field goal with 6:38 to play, Haener and Cropper struck again with a 26-yard TD that made it 35-30 with 4:53 to play. Haener finished the game 30 for 42 for 378 yards and five TDs. - Fresno State/AP College Football

Jake Haener transferred out of Washington to Fresno State and turned into a Pac-12 killer. The Bulldogs quarterback engineered two late touchdown drives to upset No. 13 UCLA and turn Pac-12 After Dark into a debacle for the West's Coast Power Five conference. San Diego State beat Utah in three overtimes, No. 23 BYU won at No. 19 Arizona State, with the help of an amazing chase-down by Tyson Allgeier, and Northern Arizona beat Arizona for the first time in almost 90 years. But nothing was worse than the UCLA loss. Just two weeks ago the Bruins knocked off LSU and seemed on the way to a big season under Chip Kelly. Then Haener, playing through pain, put on one of the performances of the season, throwing for 455 yards and two touchdowns. The Pac-12 is 16-16 in nonconference games, including three losses to BYU, five against Mountain West teams - such as Fresno State - and two to FCS schools. - AP College Football

Fresno State's Jake Haener was able to overcome a crushing hit to his right hip to lead the Bulldogs to an upset victory over No. 13 UCLA. Haener threw for 455 yards, including the go-ahead touchdown pass to Jalen Cropper with 14 seconds remaining, as the Bulldogs beat the Bruins 40-37 Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. "We know he's tough, right. We've seen that over the course of last year and this year. He's tough," Fresno State coach Kalen DeBoer said. "When the pressure was great, he was at his best and that's what's awesome." Haener had to be at his best in a game that saw four lead changes over the final 7:27 after the Bulldogs had a 23-10 lead at halftime.

Fresno State finished the job against a Pac-12 program after leading then-No. 11 Oregon in the fourth quarter two weeks ago before losing. "I mean, we just made one more play, right? We made one more play," DeBoer said. "Fifty-four seconds that I just think about what our guys are capable of doing, it didn't feel like it was too big of a feat at all." Haener's 19-yard strike to Erik Brooks put Fresno State back in front 33-30 with 2:55 remaining, but he was wincing in pain on the ground after taking numerous hits throughout the night. After UCLA regained the lead with 54 seconds left on Dorian Thompson-Robinson's 15-yard pass to Kyle Phillips, a limping Haener directed a six-play, 75-yard drive that gave the Bulldogs (3-1) their fourth straight win over the Bruins. "He was a pretty mobile quarterback. We struggled to keep him in the pocket," UCLA cornerback Qwuantrezz Knight said. - Fresno State/AP College Football

Jake Haener threw for three touchdowns and 331 yards and Fresno State started its 100th year of football with a 45-0 win over Connecticut on Saturday. Haener left the contest on the Bulldogs' first drive of the second half due to apparent leg cramps as temperatures on the field reached 120 degrees. Haener, a transfer from Washington, threw all his TD passes in the second quarter and by intermission had 299 passing yards.

Haener threw a short crossing route to Jalen Cropper who weaved and outraced the defense for an 86-yard score to make it 28-0 just before halftime. Fresno State struck first with 2:52 left in the first quarter when defensive end Arron Mosby sacked quarterback Zac Zergiotis, forced a fumble then ran it back 31 yards for a 7-0 lead. Zergiotis threw for 61 yards. The Huskies (0-1) made their first-ever trip to Fresno, California. The contest marked their first game since Nov. 30, 2019.   Fresno State has not recruited a high school quarterback who has made it from signing day to his senior year since Derek Carr in 2009, a head-scratching run for a program built largely on homegrown talent at the position with a long line of four-, three- and two-year starters. But as Fresno State finishes up its 15 spring practices this week, the Bulldogs are dropping serious hints that in a coronavirus-impacted recruiting season with no on-campus official visits and no face-to-face time they have hit a home run with Chaminade-West Hills quarterback Jaylen Henderson.

The Bulldogs moved redshirt freshman quarterback Jalen Early to tight end, are in no rush to fill an open scholarship in their quarterbacks room and essentially have set up Henderson to compete with redshirt freshman Logan Fife for the No. 2 spot behind starter Jake Haener when Henderson hits campus this summer. "We really like what Jaylen brings, both the physical aspect and also the mental aspect," coach Kalen DeBoer said. "He's just so mature. He's a great leader and he just has a desire to be great in every way. We're fired up, and we're counting on him to have a fast learning curve and understand our offense and make that next step from high school to college in a hurry." - Fresno Bee

It took a couple of games, but junior quarterback Jake Haener displayed why he was a Pac-12 talent. Haener, who transferred from the University of Washington to Fresno State last season, threw for a career-high 311 yards, completing 22-of-32 attempts. Haener averaged 13.9 yards per completion. A week after committing four turnovers in a loss to the Rainbow Warriors, Haener had an error-free game. Haener directed the Bulldogs on five scoring drives and helped the Bulldogs accumulate more than 400 yards of total offense. "It was really impressive how the guys came back to work and how the coaches prepared," Haener said. "It gave us an opportunity to do good things. I'm really impressed with that." Fresno State had three scoring drives, which all resulted in touchdowns, with 10 plays or more. The Bulldogs scored every time they were in the red zone, going 5-for-5, and averaged 5.5 yards per play. - Visalia Times-Delta

Fresno State football coach Kalen DeBoer kicked off his first game week at the helm of the Bulldogs' program by going with fourth-year junior and Washington transfer Jake Haener as his starting quarterback. "Right now we feel like Jake gives us the best chance for us to reach our full potential as a football team and as an offense," DeBoer said, in a Monday Zoom meeting. "That's a hard deal because a guy like (Ben) Wooldridge has put a lot into this program and will continue to do so. He has carried himself in a very first-class way and I know he's going to be there to support Jake. But we've had three good practices in preparation (for Hawaii) and Jake has been taking all of those snaps."

Haener and Wooldridge have been competing since the end of the 2019 season, through a winter strength and conditioning program, a spring practice that was canceled by the coronavirus, a summer full of video meetings but void of organized player-run practices while campus was closed due to COVID-19 and the past three weeks in an abbreviated fall camp. Haener emerged with the job and will take the first snap on Saturday when the Bulldogs open an eight-game 2020 football season against Hawaii (4:30 p.m., KSEE24, no fans allowed). It will be the fifth career game and first career college start for Haener, who played in four games at Washington in 2018 behind starter Jake Browning with somewhat mixed results. - Fresno Bee

Backup quarterback Jake Haener is leaving No. 13 Washington after losing a camp battle for the starting job to Georgia transfer Jacob Eason. Washington released a statement on Saturday announcing Haener was leaving the program effective immediately. There were no other details. A day earlier, Washington coach Chris Petersen announced Eason would be the starter for the opener against Eastern Washington next week, but indicated Haener would play. "He should, he deserves it and he will," Petersen said of Haener on Friday.

But Haener had different plans and becomes the second quarterback to transfer from Washington this calendar year. Colson Yankoff transferred to UCLA in June. Haener appeared in three games last season and was 9 of 13 passing for 109 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His decision leaves just three scholarship quarterbacks on Washington's roster going into the season: Eason, redshirt freshman Jacob Sirmon and true freshman Dylan Morris. - AP College Football
