 Cameron Rising, Utah, Player News

  03/02/23 - QB Cameron RisingrSr/2024, Utah, 6-1, 215 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Kyle Whittingham expects that the next time you see Cam Rising, he will be starting for the University of Utah in the season-opener vs. the University of Florida. The Utes' head coach has been steadfast in that belief in the weeks since Rising exited the Rose Bowl in the third quarter on Jan. 2 with what was later revealed to be a torn left ACL. The opener will be played on either Aug. 31 or Sept. 2, roughly nine months since the injury, which falls in line with what is the general recovery timeline. Whittingham told The Salt Lake Tribune last week in a wide-ranging interview that Rising is on, if not ahead of schedule in his recovery, but there is another factor as far as the timeline goes that isn't being talked about enough.

Is Rising going to be ready for fall camp? If yes, will he be there for all of it? Some of it? Either way, how much of camp does Rising need to participate in for Whittingham to be comfortable putting him out there against the Gators? "To be ready for the opener, he has to get some reps in camp," Whittingham told The Tribune. "Maybe not necessarily the onset of camp, but by midway through camp, so we'll see how things progress. If he's not ready until a few days before the game, it's unlikely he would play in that game because he just wouldn't be completely sharp in all other areas." Utah has not announced a start date for fall camp, but FBS programs can practice 25 times over 29 days leading up to the opener, which would put the Utes' first practice on or about Aug. 2, eight months after the injury occurred. - Salt Lake Tribune

Utah announced its four captains for spring ball on Monday, naming quarterback Cameron Rising and tight end Brant Kuithe as the offensive captains, and safety Cole Bishop and linebacker Karene Reid as the defensive captains. Rising returns for his third full season as Utah's starting quarterback. He's led the Utes to back-to-back Pac-12 championships as a starter. He threw for 3,034 and 26 touchdowns last season. - Deseret News

Utah quarterback Cameron Rising is returning after considering a jump to the NFL. The school announced Monday that Rising will be back as a sixth-year senior in 2023 after leading the Utes to consecutive Pac-12 titles. Rising was a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien and Maxwell awards after throwing for 3,034 yards and 26 touchdowns with eight interceptions. The Ventura, California, native was named MVP of the Pac-12 Championship game after leading the Utes to a 47-24 win that knocked USC out of the College Football Playoff.

Utah played in the Rose Bowl the past two seasons, falling short in both after Rising went down with injuries. He suffered a left leg injury and had to leave in the third quarter of this year's game, which the Utes lost 35-21 to Penn State. Rising's return adds to a strong list of Pac-12 quarterbacks who will be back in 2023, including Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams of USC, Oregon's Bo Nix and Washington State's Michael Penix Jr. Former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei also transferred to Oregon State. - AP College Football

  12/02/22 - QB Cameron RisingrSr/2024, Utah, 6-1, 215 (DS#12 QB) + More +

No. 12 Utah pounded a limping, bloodied Caleb Williams and roared past No. 4 Southern California 47-24 on Friday night to win the Pac-12 Championship and put USC's College Football Playoff hopes in doubt. The loss by the Trojans (11-2) could open the way for Ohio State (11-1) to take their spot in the playoffs. USC is fourth in the CFP rankings, the Buckeyes are one step behind. Ohio State had to be Utah's biggest fan. The Buckeyes move up in playoff consideration, with 12-0 Michigan at No. 2 with the Big Ten championship game on Saturday, that would give the Big Ten conference two playoff teams for the first time. It also would extend the Pac-12's playoff drought - Washington in 2017 is the last team from that conference to make the playoffs. Utah (10-3) is heading to the Rose Bowl, but the Utes already were going there regardless of the outcome of the title game. They are responsible for USC's only losses, having edged the Trojans 43-42 on Oct. 15 in Salt Lake City. The Utes rolled up 533 yards of offense in the rematch, and Cam Rising passed for 310 yards and three touchdowns.

Williams threw for 363 yards and three TDs. He entered the game as the leading Heisman Trophy candidate, but wasn't the same after getting injured in the first quarter. The Trojans looked as if they were going to run away with the game, taking a 17-3 lead early in the second quarter behind some stellar play by Williams. He appeared to hurt his left knee or leg in the first quarter on a 59-yard run in which he took a big hit at the end, and he suffered a bad cut on the pinky finger of his throwing hand. He spent most of the game limping, and wasn't the same after a sterling first quarter in which the Trojans outgained Utah in total yards 194-70, and Williams had both touchdown passes. After USC failed to pick up a fourth-and-8 from Utah's 37-yard line, the Utes scored two touchdowns in the final 3:55 of the first half, and suddenly the game was tied at 17. Instead of a rout, the game was beginning to look like the shootout the Utes won in October. The game took on that tone at times in the second half, but USC had no answer for how to slow down Utah, which outscored the Trojans 44-7 in overcoming that two-touchdown deficit. - Utah/AP College Football

Utah turned in one of its most dominant road performances in a 63-21 win at Colorado. The 63 points tied for the Utes' most in a road conference game since at least 2000. They had 63 at San Diego State in 2008 when they were in the Mountain West. Utah's 662 total yards against the Buffaloes were its most in any game since 2004 and third all-time, and its 9.9 yards per play were its most against an FBS opponent since at least 2000, according to Sportradar. - AP College Football

Cameron Rising threw three touchdown passes before taking a seat for the second half, Ja'Quinden Jackson ran for three scores and No. 14 Utah routed Colorado 63-21 on Saturday night to remain in the chase for the last spot into the Pac-12 title game. The Utes (9-3, 7-2 Pac-12, No. 14 CFP) entered the weekend with an outside shot at defending their league title, and things are starting to fall into place. UCLA did its part for Utah by knocking off Cal on Friday. Then, the big assist - No. 22 Oregon State surprising 10th-ranked Oregon, with the Utah fans at Folsom Field cheering when the score was flashed on the scoreboard. All that remains is No. 12 Washington beating Washington State late Saturday, and the Utes would earn a spot based on a tiebreaker. USC already has a spot for next Friday's game in Las Vegas. The Utes built a 42-0 halftime lead and steadily started sprinkling in their backups. It didn't slow the Utes, who had 662 total yards of offense. Jackson scored on runs of 10, 2 and 66 yards. The 63 points was the most allowed by Colorado since Oregon scored 70 on Oct. 27, 2012.

The Buffaloes (1-11, 1-8) brought to a close a dreary season that saw head coach Karl Dorrell fired in October and interim coach Mike Sanford go 1-6 in his place. The team lost seven games by 30 or more points. A coaching search is underway at Colorado with rumors swirling around names such as Deion Sanders and Bronco Mendenhall. There was a fan in the south end zone wearing a suit featuring Colorado logos and a bag over their head. On the back of the bag was a letter to “Coach Prime,” urging Sanders to come to Boulder. Maddox Kopp became the fourth Buffaloes quarterback to start this season. He finished with 123 yards passing and a late 1-yard touchdown to offensive lineman turned tight end Frank Fillip. Utah tight ends Thomas Yassmin and Dalton Kincaid each turned in acrobatic scoring plays in the first half. Yassmin showed off his athleticism by catching a short pass and hurdling over cornerback Nikko Reed on his way to a 41-yard score. Not to be outdone, Kincaid looked left on a long pass and quickly swiveled to the right to haul in a 29-yard pass from Rising while falling to the turf. Kincaid stayed down for several moments after the play. - Utah/AP College Football

  10/15/22 - QB Cameron RisingrSr/2024, Utah, 6-1, 215 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Cameron Rising threw for 415 yards, ran for three touchdowns and scampered up the middle for a go-ahead two-point conversion with 48 seconds left in No. 20 Utah's 43-42 victory over No. 7 Southern California on Saturday night. Rising rushed a yard for a touchdown on fourth down to set up the deciding conversion. Caleb Williams threw for 381 yards and five touchdowns for Southern California (6-1, 4-1 Pac-12). Utah (5-2, 3-1) held the Trojans on their last-ditch drive, handing them their first loss as a record crowd of 53,609 shook Rice-Eccles Stadium and then flooded the field. The Utes needed every one of Rising's big plays with his legs and his arm during his career night.

Rising, who was once committed to current USC coach Lincoln Riley when he was at Oklahoma, became the first Utah QB to throw for 400 yards since Brian Johnson had 417 against San Diego State in 2005. Dalton Kincaid had 15 catches for 217 yards, the most for a Ute since Carl Harry had 255 yards in 1988. Southern Cal's Mario Williams had four catches for 145 yards and Jordan Addison had seven receptions for 106 yards before an ankle injury took him out of the game. Against an all-out blitz, Williams connected with Michael Jackson III, who stepped through a tackle for a 20-yard touchdown with 6:15 to play for a 42-35 lead. It was Jackson's first catch of the season. Utah has won 23 of its last 24 home games, including a streak of 12 in a row. Addison, the 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner at Pittsburgh as the nation's top receiver, had seven catches for 106 yards but hurt his ankle on a reverse in the third quarter. - Utah/AP College Football

Cameron Rising threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns to tight end Dalton Kincaid, and No. 13 Utah rolled past Arizona State 34-13 on Saturday night. The Utes spoiled the debut of Arizona State's Shaun Aguano, who was named interim coach earlier this week after Herm Edwards was fired following last weekend's loss to Eastern Michigan. Utah (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) won its third straight since a season-opening loss to Florida. Arizona State (1-3, 0-1) lost its third in a row. Utah never trailed, jumping ahead 7-0 in the first quarter when Rising hit Kincaid for a wide-open 29-yard touchdown. The Rising-Kincaid connection hooked up again later in the first quarter when Kincaid made a tough, fourth-down catch in traffic for a 6-yard score that pushed the advantage to 14-0.

The Utes built a 17-0 lead by midway through the second quarter and led 24-6 at halftime. Utah outgained Arizona State 252-59 in the first half. Rising completed 19 of 29 passes and the Utes finished with 465 total yards. Arizona State's Emory Jones was 21 of 36 passing for 261 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Utah's defense sacked Jones five times and the Sun Devils didn't score a touchdown until the final minutes when the outcome was already decided. It's been a week of upheaval for the Arizona State program, which fired Edwards on Sunday, one day after an embarrassing 30-21 loss to Eastern Michigan. The program is also in the midst of an NCAA investigation that involves recruiting violations. Aguano - formerly the running backs coach - was named the interim coach. He was born and raised in Kapaa, Hawaii, but eventually became one of the most decorated high school coaches in Arizona history, leading Chandler High to four state 6A titles. - Utah/AP College Football

Cam Rising threw for 224 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in three quarters to help No. 14 Utah rout San Diego State 35-7 on Saturday night. Rising is the first Utah quarterback since 2017 to pass for 200 or more yards in the first three games of the season. The Utes (2-1) forced a pair of turnovers and scored touchdowns following both takeaways. Utah totaled 398 yards and held an opponent to a single touchdown for the second consecutive game. The Utes totaled 309 yards over the final three quarters. "We just couldn't get in a rhythm offensively (in the first quarter)," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "But once we got going and got momentum, the floodgates kind of opened and we put the game away mid-third quarter." San Diego State (1-2) lost starting quarterback Braxton Burmeister to an eye injury in the first quarter and never got on track offensively.

The Aztecs failed to convert a third down until midway through the third quarter and did not surpass 100 total yards of offense until the final minute of the quarter. "Braxton got a thumb in the eye," Aztecs coach Brady Hoke said. "It was just black for him at one time and blurred for most of the game. He couldn't see." Third-string quarterback Kyle Crum directed San Diego State for most of the final three quarters. He threw for 53 yards and touchdown and also had an interception. Utah roared to life on offense in the second quarter. Rising threw touchdown passes on three consecutive drives to help the Utes take a 21-0 halftime lead. He got Utah on the board with a 30-yard strike to Brant Kuithe. His second touchdown pass was a 13-yard toss to Solomon Enis in the back of the end zone. Rising capped it off with a 15-yard pass to Devaughn Vele with 20 seconds left in the half. We didn't get the pressure we needed on the QB," Aztecs defensive end Jonah Tavai said. "Obviously, Cam Rising is a great player, and he did a wonderful job." Rising ended up completing 10 of 12 passes for 123 yards in the second quarter alone. - Utah/AP College Football

Cameron Rising threw for 254 yards in the first half, Dalton Kincaid had 107 yards receiving and two touchdowns and No. 13 Utah routed Southern Utah 73-7 on Saturday. Coming off an opening loss last week at Florida, Utah scored on nine consecutive drives, including eight touchdowns, over the final three quarters against the FCS Thunderbirds (1-1). The Utes had 599 yards of total offense. As six-touchdown underdogs, the Thunderbirds weren't afraid of taking some risks. They started the game with an unsuccessful onside kick that led to a 13-yard touchdown run by Tavion Thomas. Southern Utah got a break when Thomas fumbled later in the first quarter and Rodrick Ward recovered. On the next play, Grady Robison tied it at 7 on a quarterback draw that went for 28 yards. Utah didn't allow any gains of 10 yards or more the rest of the game.

Thomas scored on another touchdown run early in the second quarter. Utah then turned a fourth-down stop of the plucky Thunderbirds into a field goal and a diving interception by Junior Tafuna into Chris Curry's TD run. Rising unleashed more of Utah's vertical passing game, which was absent against Florida, and capped the first half with three touchdown passes to the Utes' prolific tight ends - two to Kincaid and one to Brant Kuithe. Utah gained 250 yards of offense in the second quarter. On the first possession of the second half, R.J. Hubert took an interception 39 yards for a touchdown. With the huge lead, most of Utah's stars watched the rest of the game from the sideline. The Ute defense held the Thunderbirds to 85 total yards despite scoring quickly throughout the game. The blowout marked Utah's highest-scoring game since beating UTEP 82-6 in 1973. - Utah/AP College Football

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 48. Cameron Rising, QB, Utah, Junior. Notable 2021 stats: 2,492 yards, 20 TDs. Last year's ranking: NR. Relative to the chatter about incoming quarterbacks like USC's Caleb Williams and Wazzu's Cameron Ward, Rising is cruising a bit under the radar. Yet after a season with nearly 2,500 passing yards and a 20-5 touchdown-interception ratio, he's exactly the kind of steady quarterback with continuity on his side that Utah needs to win the conference again. - ESPN.com

The University of Utah has its highest-ever preseason ranking. The Utes, 10-4 overall and Pac-12 champions for the first time last season, were slotted at No. 8 in the preseason AFCA Coaches Poll, released on Monday morning. The No. 8 preseason ranking eclipses the program's previous preseason high in either major poll, No. 14 in the AP Top 25 ahead of the 2019 season. That team peaked in early December of that season, getting to No. 5 in the AP and Coaches Polls, plus the College Football Playoff rankings.

Last season's Rose Bowl qualifier began the season unranked in the Coaches Poll, but wound up finishing 12th, its highest finish in that poll since the vaunted 13-0 2004 team finished fourth. Kyle Whittingham's program was joined Monday in the poll by fellow-Pac-12 programs Oregon (No. 12) and USC (No. 15). "You have to just embrace them," Whittingham said of managing expectations on Monday afternoon following Utah's fifth fall camp practice. "They are there and there's no hiding from them, so we will meet them head on. We have to understand we're getting a lot of national attention and we have to be mature enough to handle that, go about our business the right way and not think we have all the answers, that we've arrived." - Salt Lake Tribune

One year ago, Utah's Cam Rising was still recovering from shoulder surgery and embroiled in a quarterback battle with Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer during fall camp. Brewer won the job but Rising eventually replaced him and led the Utes to the Pac-12 championship and a Rose Bowl appearance. Now, Rising is the Utes' undisputed starter, having earned All-Pac-12 first team honors after completing 204 of 320 passes for 2,493 yards with five interceptions and 20 touchdowns and running 74 times for 499 yards and six TDs in 2021.

That aside, Rising is taking the same approach as he did during last year's fall camp. "It still feels like I have to go out there and prove myself each and every day. It doesn't really matter if it's my job. That just means I'll be getting more (first-team) reps. That's just the way it is," he said. "I've still got to attack it and prove that I'm the best guy for the job each and every day." That's why coach Kyle Whittingham has called Rising an "alpha dog" in the program. "He's one of the hardest workers on the football team, if not the hardest. You can talk about it but you've got to be about it," Whittingham said. "His performance is outstanding, his film study. Just everything. There's no weakness in Cam Rising right now. He's doing everything right coming off an outstanding year. We're fortunate to have him on our team." - Deseret News

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham does not do hyperbole. When Whittingham began fielding questions, iIt didn't take long for the topic to swing to Cam Rising. The specific question centered around the incumbent fifth-year quarterback's leadership style and why it inspires confidence in his teammates. "He's one of the hardest workers on the football team, if not the hardest," Whittingham said. "You can talk about it, but you have to be about it. His performance is outstanding, his film study, everything. There is no weakness in Cam Rising right now.   The University of Utah opened fall camp on Wednesday afternoon, but depending on who you ask, the first practice didn't totally feel like a first practice. The Utes are projected to return 17 starters in 2022. Among them, Cam Rising was a revelation last fall at quarterback, Tavion Thomas rushed for over 1,100 yards and 21 touchdowns last season, both were named All-Pac-12 last season. Up and down the projected two-deep, there are third-year, fourth-year, even fifth-year guys at some positions. Opening camp with that amount of experience presumably means less of a learning curve for the players. "Without a doubt, and it's very evident they spent a lot of time on the field together this summer on their own because today was more like a practice 8 or practice 9 feel as far as the lack of mental mistakes and how smooth things went," 18th-year head coach Kyle Whittingham said. - Salt Lake Tribune

University of Utah quarterback Cam Rising showed what he could do last season after transferring from Texas and being forced to sit out a year. The results were more than impressive: After taking over as the Utes' starting QB midway through the team's third game, Rising threw for 2,493 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions, while adding 499 rushing yards and six more touchdowns. He put up a QBR rating of 84.2, per ESPN's metrics, which ranked sixth nationally and is the best among Pac-12 quarterbacks returning this season.

He also led the Utes to their first Pac-12 championship and Rose Bowl appearance. Could Utah's Cam Rising be a first-round NFL draft pick next year? That kind of production has the junior signal-caller getting national attention, including being named to the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien Award watch lists this week. Some, like ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. earlier this offseason, believe that 2022 could be the year Rising rises to the occasion and makes himself one of the top NFL quarterback prospects next spring. - Deseret News

This weekend, Utah quarterback Cam Rising has been participating in the Manning Passing Academy, a high school football camp in Thibodaux, La. founded by former NFL quarterback Archie Manning. Manning's sons, former NFL quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Eli Manning, are also on hand during during the camp. Rising has been a coach during the camp, and participated in competition with the other college quarterback coaches on Friday such as Alabama's Bryce Young.

"The quarterbacks threw 10-yard hooks, 18-yard comebacks, 18-yard digs and a deep ball to receivers. The scored portion of the throwing session was a target competition where the quarterbacks threw at moving golf carts. Each turn included two crossing routes and a vertical throw down the sideline," per On3's Charles Power. Power named the top standouts from the event, and Rising was on the list. "Cameron Rising was among the more relaxed passers in the Manning Passing Academy's high-energy setting. (Rising) didn't press and made some nice throws on the night, highlighted by a well-thrown comeback. Rising's emergence in 2021 helped lead Utah to the Rose Bowl," Power wrote. - Deseret News

Entering the 2022 season, Rising isn't going to sneak up on anybody. Opposing teams have a year's worth of film on him. Everybody knows who he is. Rising is being mentioned as someone that deserves a spot on Heisman Watch lists. A lot should be expected of Rising as he enters the season as the undisputed starter, according to Scott Mitchell. "Cam Rising right now should be considered a Heisman Trophy candidate," he said. "That's my expectation."

But Mitchell's expectations don't end there. "The expectation is that Utah ends up in the College Football Playoff. I think that's what they think, too. I think Cam Rising thinks that. That expectation is, this isn't bigger than us," he said. "With the type of talent they have coming back, across the board (that should be the expectation). "But also the maturity and the experience and the culture that's at Utah right now. This is a team and a program that's really right at that place, that place of winning the conference championship was amazing; the Rose Bowl was incredible, but we can do more. That's what more is." Utah has an ideal opportunity to prove itself on a national stage with a season opener at Florida, on national television. - Deseret News

In the past three NFL drafts, there have been two Utah quarterbacks who were first-round draft picks: Utah State's Jordan Love in 2020 and BYU's Zach Wilson in 2021. Could it happen again next year? Last year, Rising took over as starting quarterback midway through the Utes' third game and led Utah to a 10-4 record, the school's first Pac-12 football championship and the program's first appearance in the Rose Bowl. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound transfer from Texas threw for 2,493 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions last season, while also rushing for 499 yards and six touchdowns. - Deseret News

Quarterback Cam Rising said despite being the defending Pac-12 champs, the team still has a chip on its shoulder. "You have to go out there and attack it. That's what the coaches have told us to do. Yeah, we won it last year and that doesn't mean that this year's trophy is in our case right now just sitting there," he said. "We have to go out there and attack it and treat it the same way we did last year so that we're going about it the right way and making sure we get back to the championship and go win it." Much of the optimism surrounding the 2022 campaign can be attributed to the return of Rising. "We know Cam's our guy. We've just got to work those guys behind him and see what happens," coach Kyle Whittingham said. "We have a first-team all-conference quarterback coming back to lead us. That's a huge positive for us." - Deseret News

Losing a couple of early season games was far from the most difficult thing Utah had to overcome to get back to the Pac-12 title game. "We've taken probably the hardest thing that can happen and we've turned it into something beautiful," receiver Britain Covey said after Senior Day victory against Colorado on Friday. Cameron Rising threw three touchdown passes, Tavion Thomas ran for 142 yards and a score, and No. 16 Utah beat the Buffaloes 28-13. Within the last year, the Utes lost star running back Ty Jordan and defensive back Aaron Lowe to tragic shooting deaths. Utah honored them with a TJ-AL logo on their helmets. "There's always been a reverence whenever we've talked about them, but we're getting to the point now where we just celebrate them and honor what they represent. It's more than two guys now, it's the entire team, the whole university," Covey said.

Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham said his team "didn't have the look in our eyes that we had last week" and his players admitted it was difficult to focus since they already clinched the Pac-12 South. But they didn't want to let their fallen teammates down. The Utes feel they are a team of destiny. "I know they are out there with us," said linebacker Devin Lloyd, who had nine tackles and a sack in what could be his last home game before declaring for the NFL draft. "They are the reason why we have been as successful as we have been." Utah rallied from a 1-2 start to win eight of their last nine games on their way to their third Pac-12 championship appearance in four seasons. The Utes (9-3, 8-1 Pac-12) rushed for 265 yards and held Colorado (4-8, 3-6 Pac-12) to 148 yards of total offense. "In this day and age, that is not easy to do. Great job by our defense...they were active, they flew around," Whittingham said. - Utah/AP College Football

Cameron Rising's long hair was still dripping wet at the postgame press conference, 30 minutes after the final whistle, giving an indication of a bruising, physical afternoon in the desert. His Utah Utes had earned a victory. It was far more difficult than expected. "It's not about how pretty it looks," Rising said. "It's not about having glitz and glamour, it's about getting the job done and that's what we did here today." Rising threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns, T.J. Pledger ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns, and Utah maintained its lead in the Pac-12 South by beating Arizona 38-29 on Saturday.

It was a hard-earned win for the Utes (7-3, 6-1 Pac-12, No. 24 CFP). Arizona led for part of the first half and kept the game tight all afternoon. Rising's perfectly placed 17-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Kincaid in the back corner of the end zone late in the third quarter gave the Utes a 31-20 lead and some semblance of control in the back-and-forth game. It didn't last long. Arizona (1-9, 1-6) responded with a field goal to cut the advantage to 31-23 and then the Wildcats scored again when Nazar Bombata blocked a Utah punt and Rhedi Short recovered before scoring a 3-yard touchdown to pull within 31-29 with about 10:30 left. The Wildcats' two-point conversion to tie was unsuccessful. Utah finally closed the game with a methodical 15-play, 75-yard drive that lasted more than eight minutes. It was capped by Pledger's 2-yard touchdown run with 2:10 left. "We knew it was going to be a physical, 60-minute fight," Pledger said. "That's exactly what we got." Utah's offense was the difference-maker once again. The Utes have scored at least 34 points in five straight games. They took a 21-17 halftime lead after Rising hit Brant Kuithe for a 2-yard touchdown with two seconds remaining. - Utah/AP College Football

The University of Utah quarterbacks room is undergoing a radical shift with Power Five transfers Charlie Brewer and Ja'Quinden Jackson entering the fray, but Cameron Rising is the incumbent. The redshirt sophomore won the starting job last season, out-dueling Jake Bentley late in fall camp to get the nod in the Nov. 21 season-opener vs. USC. Rising lasted all of 14 offensive snaps, though, suffering a season-ending shoulder injury while trying to recover his own fumble. Rising underwent surgery to repair the shoulder injury and continues to go through rehabilitation as spring practice begins to unfold without him. Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham has ruled Rising out for the spring, so he has no choice but to continue rehab, not to mention wait for his turn to come back around. - Salt Lake Tribune

Jake Bentley, who went 16-for-28 for 171 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in relief of Rising, will start this weekend The Utes were scheduled to play Arizona State on Sunday, but with the Sun Devils dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak, that game was canceled by the Pac-12 late Tuesday afternoon.   When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down Utah spring practice in mid-March, Cameron Rising had an early leg up in the Utes' spring/summer quarterback competition with Jake Bentley and Drew Lisk. In hindsight, that was to be expected. Rising spent the 2019 season in residence after the NCAA denied his immediate-eligibility waiver. Instead of being eligible right away, Rising ran the scout team, while working with first-year offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. Rising even spent home game days in the Rice-Eccles Stadium press box to gain a better understanding of the offense and how Ludwig calls a game. "It's been great, something I don't take for granted," Rising told The Salt Lake Tribune via phone last week from his home in Ventura, Calif., which remains under a stay-well-at-home order through the end of the month. "How much I saw last season, it was mind-boggling at times how much work really goes into a game day. Seeing him call a game, experiencing that, I got to see how Coach Ludwig acts and I think that can only benefit me."

Rising may have impressed in the early days of spring ball, but that means little anymore. At this point, the quarterback situation at Utah is unsettled. It will remain so until everyone is back on campus and going through whatever ramp-up and training camp is allowed ahead of the season. "I felt like things were going well and I was ready to keep it going," Rising said. "We'd just gotten pads on and I was itching to get back after it after spring break. I wanted to keep working with the team. A lot of development was happening and we all could have used as many reps as possible. "We all just need to hang in there and make sure we hit the ground running when we come back. No hitches or anything like that, get back to work and get better." - Salt Lake Tribune
