  01/02/23 - QB Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

KeAndre Lambert-Smith had the longest touchdown reception in Rose Bowl history on an 88-yard pass from Sean Clifford, freshman Nicholas Singleton broke a tiebreaking 87-yard touchdown run, and No. 9 Penn State rallied past No. 7 Utah 35-21 in the 109th edition of the Granddaddy of Them All on Monday. Clifford passed for 279 yards and two touchdowns in an impressive farewell to Penn State, and Singleton rushed for 120 yards and two more scores on a rainy day filled with spectacular big plays by the Nittany Lions (11-2). Utah couldn't rally with quarterback Cameron Rising sidelined by a second-half injury, and coach James Franklin's exuberant group comfortably won the Rose Bowl for the second time in school history and the first since Jan. 2, 1995. Singleton got the Nittany Lions rolling in a well-played game when he broke through Utah's defensive front and outran the secondary for his second touchdown early in the third quarter. The 87-yard romp was the third-longest TD run in Rose Bowl history and the second-longest in Penn State's bowl history.

Shortly after rain began to fall on the Rose Bowl Game for the first time since 1997, Lambert-Smith got open deep and eluded Utah's defensive backs on the first snap of the fourth quarter for the longest pass completion in Penn State's bowl history. Clifford's pass also broke the Rose Bowl record of 76 yards by Michigan's Rick Leach to Curt Stephenson in 1978 against Washington. Freshman Kaytron Allen added a 1-yard TD run with 10:36 to play, and Penn State's defense got stops on the Utes' first six drives of the second half. The victory was a fitting finale for Clifford, the sixth-year senior who finally added a memorable bowl performance to his slew of Penn State career passing records in his 51st game. Clifford also became the winningest quarterback in school history with his 32nd victory, passing Trace McSorley. Rising passed for 95 yards before apparently injuring his left knee in the third quarter, forcing the Utah quarterback out of his second straight Rose Bowl early due to injury. Bryson Barnes replaced Rising for the second straight year, but the two-time Pac-12 champion Utes (10-4) couldn't rally behind their backup. - Penn State/AP College Football

  11/26/22 - QB Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Sean Clifford threw four touchdown passes and No. 11 Penn State's defense tightened up late to beat Michigan State 35-16 in the regular-season finale on Saturday. Tight end Theo Johnson caught two touchdown passes, Tyler Warren and running back Nick Singleton each caught one, and KeAndre Lambert-Smith threw a touchdown pass and caught another for the Nittany Lions (10-2, 6-2 Big Ten, No. 11 CFP). Penn State evened the all-time series with the Spartans at 18-18-1, but needed a fourth-quarter push to do so. The Spartans (5-7, 3-6) were down a handful of players due to injuries and suspensions; seven of those suspended in the melee after the Michigan game on Oct. 29 were charged Wednesday. Penn State held Michigan State to just eight rushing yards and were up 14-3 at halftime. But the Spartans cut Penn State's lead to 21-16 with 10:52 to play after quarterback Payton Thorne led back-to-back 10-and 11-play touchdown drives in the third and fourth quarters.

Thorne threw to Maliq Carr who made a one-handed catch for a nine-yard score late in the third. The Spartans quarterback kept the ball himself for a two-yard touchdown on their next possession, though his two-point conversion pass failed. But Penn State's offense took control from there. Clifford, a four-year starter in his sixth collegiate season, led an 11-play drive of his own to ice the game on senior day. He found Singleton in the flats and the rookie running back skipped through the Spartan defense for a 12-yard score. He also threw a 35-yard dart to Lambert-Smith between defenders with 3:56 to play as a finale. The first quarter featured early miscues from both teams. The Spartans turned the ball over on their opening drive when linebacker Tyler Elsdon recovered a backward pass. Four plays later, Penn State kicker Jake Pinegar pushed a 37-yard field goal try wide right. - Penn State/AP College Football

Sean Clifford threw four touchdown passes, Penn State's defense forced seven punts and the No. 16 Nittany Lions beat Minnesota 45-17 on Saturday night. A week after the worst game of his six-year career, a smattering of boos rang out from the 107,000 fans clad all in white when Clifford was announced as the starting quarterback. Some in the crowd wanted to see coveted freshman Drew Allar take over. By halftime, the Happy Valley crowd had changed its tone. Clifford threw darts over the middle to tight ends Tyler Warren and Theo Johnson on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter to put Penn State (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) up for good.

The rout was on when he lofted a deep ball to Parker Washington for a 35-yard score on Penn State's first possession of the second half. Nick Singleton added two touchdown runs and Mitchell Tinsley caught another Clifford TD pass for the Nittany Lions, who avoided falling further behind in the Big Ten East after losing badly at No. 4 Michigan last week. Penn State hosts No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday. The Golden Gophers (4-3, 1-3) lost their third straight, this one amid difficult circumstances. - Penn State/AP College Football

Sean Clifford completed 22 of 34 passes for 217 yards and accounted for four touchdowns to lead No. 14 Penn State past Central Michigan 33-14 on Saturday. Tight end Brenton Strange caught two touchdowns and Mitchell Tinsley caught one. Clifford and Kaytron Allen added touchdown runs for the Nittany Lions (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten. Penn State forced four turnovers. It didn't take long for the Nittany Lions to take control. Clifford marched his offense down the field and hit Tinsley over the middle from 5 yards out to start the scoring. He got another shot on a short field when Zakee Wheatley picked off Daniel Richardson on Central Michigan's eighth play of the day and returned it to the Chippewa 15.

Clifford completed 22 of 34 passes for 217 yards with three touchdowns. He ran for 23 yards and another score. Clifford needed just three plays from there to find Strange on a 4-yard quick out that made it 14-0. The Chippewas (1-3) got their offense going in the second quarter. Richardson capped an 11-play drive by hitting Finn Hogan over the middle from two yards out to make it 14-7. Central Michigan forced a turnover on downs moments later and Richardson found open receivers again. He ended a 9-play, 67-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Joel Wilson that tied it at 14. Scoreless possessions followed before the Nittany Lions retook the lead with a 14-yard touchdown run from Allen. Penn State led 21-14 at halftime. The Chippewas turned the ball over again to start the second half. - Penn State/AP College Football

  09/02/22 - QB Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Sean Clifford avenged his biggest mistake Thursday night with one masterful, final drive. It may have saved Penn State's conference title hopes. The sixth-year quarterback hooked up with Keyvone Lee on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 57 seconds left, rallying the Nittany Lions to a 35-31 victory in their season opener at Purdue. "It was very impressive," coach James Franklin said when asked about the eight-play, 80-yard drive. "We work on the 2-minute drill all the time and it worked out for us right there. You can learn a lot in games like this and I'd rather learn them with a win." It was a rollercoaster night as Clifford opened his sixth college season. He narrowly escaped a right leg injury in the first half then dealt with cramps in the second half, forcing him to miss a series in the third quarter.

He appeared to put the Nittany Lions in control by hooking up with Brenton Strange, who broke two tackles on his way to a 67-yard score with 2 seconds left in the first half. That gave the Nittany Lions a 21-10 lead. He didn't complete a pass after returning in the third quarter and then almost gave the game away when he overthrew Mitchell Tinsley and Chris Jefferson picked off the errant pass and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown to give the Boilermakers a 31-28 lead midway through the fourth quarter. And then, he came through in the clutch to give Penn State its 10th straight win in the series. Clifford finished 20 of 37 with 282 yards and four scores It sure wasn't easy in front of a near-capacity crowd and a game that featured seven lead changes. "It was a gutsy win," Franklin said. "We showed a lot of character. We've got to make more plays on offense, obviously." Penn State's defense also had to contend with a little bit of everything. King Doerue ran for two scores, Aidan O'Connell threw for 356 yards and another score and he celebrated his 24th birthday by connecting with childhood friend Charlie Jones 12 times for 153 yards and a 17-yard TD pass. - Penn State/AP College Football

Penn State named six captains for the 2022 football season Thursday, making history with two of the choices. Redshirt senior quarterback Sean Clifford and linebacker Jonathan Sutherland became the first four-time captains in program history. The addition of an extra year of eligibility for players on the roster during the 2020 pandemic season made the record more reachable, of course. Senior safety Ji'Ayir Brown, senior defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, redshirt junior offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and redshirt senior long snapper Chris Stoll were also named captain. Clifford, a Cincinnati native, has made 33 starts under center and is third in program history in career passing yards with 7,839. Sutherland, a native of Ottawa, has appeared in 45 career games at linebacker and safety. He had 24 tackles and an interception last season. - Tribune Review

Some things are different - for the first time in his career, Sean Clifford has the same offensive coordinator for the second season in a row. Mike Yurcich steps into his second year at the helm of the offense. Yurcich's offense is based on short passes to open up the deep pass. While Clifford's yards per attempt dropped from 7.5 to 7.3 under Yurcich from former offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, Penn State ranked 25th in total passing yards (3,923). Yurcich believes that with more repetitions and a better feel for the system, Clifford will continue to grow as a quarterback and leader. He lauded Clifford's preparation during the offseason, calling it "phenomenal," and he oversaw the growth of his veteran quarterback from spring practices to fall camp. "When we have a new cycle, you're just starting back over again from the base system of the offense - re-teaching it," Yurcich said. "So, when you get several attempts at that, the more smooth it's going to go and he's eager to move on to more stuff early and maybe the offense isn't quite ready for all of the install that he's ready for. So, it makes it easier. Just the language and communication and all of that is an easier flow and more familiarity with the system."

Part of Clifford's development under Yurcich has been to key in on spreading the wealth. Yurcich wants the quarterback to take the pressure off of his shoulders and not force plays. That's been an area where they've looked to improve in year six with having continuity with receivers like Parker Washington and KeAndre Lambert-Smith, along with tight ends Brenton Strange, Theo Johnson and Tyler Warren. "I think with his experience, he understands that from a level where some fourth-year guys don't," Yurcich said. "He understands the scrutiny, the pressure that the position holds and just making sure that I do a good job with him. (It's) making sure that at times we have to take a deep breath, we have to wash it and move on to the next play and have that 1-0 mentality that we have as a program and that we have at the quarterback position." - Centre Times

Predicting a Penn State MVP for 2022. Let's not overthink this. It's been a decade since a Penn State back not named Saquon Barkley or Miles Sanders has reached the 1,000-yard milestone, and the passing offenses of coordinator Mike Yurcich have historically spread the ball around. By process of elimination, unless OL legend Steve Wisniewski finds a time machine, that leaves sixth-year quarterback Sean Clifford. Clifford might not finish as an all-conference selection, but he should complete about 60% of his passes while throwing for at least twice as many touchdowns as interceptions. That should be good enough for MVP honors in an offense that likely won't feature many statistical standouts. - Centre Times

Heading into his fourth season as Penn State's starting quarterback, Sean Clifford (6-2, 212) is the focus of media attention because of his involvement with the College Football Players Association, which is a hot-button issue. He was besieged by reporters and cameras at media day and asked about the new association. "I'm going to stick to football questions," Clifford said. "But I appreciate the question." Clifford also launched his own Name, Image and Likeness agency this offseason and is the CEO of Limitless NIL. "I see myself as a leader in the locker room first and foremost, there for every single student-athlete that comes in contact with me," Clifford said. "Because I want to make sure I'm there for them the same way great leaders were there for me early.   Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford has been creating headlines of late after his discussions with College Football Players Association executive director Jason Stahl became public knowledge and stirred up questions about potential for the team to unionize. Clifford and about 100 Nittany Lions were reportedly in an extended meeting with Stahl before a member of the Penn State staff entered the room with less than five minutes to go in Stahl's presentation, he told CBS Sports. However, the notion of potential unionization was put to bed by Clifford with a statement on Friday after the news became public and then by head coach James Franklin and athletic director Pat Kraft Wednesday afternoon at Big Ten Media Days.

On Wednesday, the team's starting quarterback made frequent reference to his statement and passed on expanding further on his hopes for what will happen next. "We are five days away from camp and that's the main thing right now," Clifford said. "Just to address what happened, do I want to make change for college athletics and college athletes across the country? Absolutely. That's one of the things that I set out to do this offseason, and I still believe that. I'm very blessed to be in this situation. To have a commissioner that's open to conversations, a head coach that's open to conversations and a new athletic director that's open to conversations. It's a blessing, 100%...Definitely excited about the future, but here in the present." Clifford's statement on Friday said he met with Franklin, Kraft and Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren to discuss the changing landscape of college athletics and how it will impact athletes. He added, however, that he was not doing so on behalf of a union. - Centre Times

When Southern California and UCLA sent shockwaves through college sports by announcing their intention to join the Big Ten on Thursday, Penn State officials - from the university president to the baseball and softball coaches - expressed their excitement about the move. Football coach James Franklin was no different. "This is another big step in the ever-changing college football landscape and we embrace the change," Franklin said in a statement released by the university. "USC and UCLA are two institutions with a long-standing tradition of academic and athletic success. They will only strengthen our already very strong Big Ten Conference." If history is any guide, Franklin might regret the welcome mat the Nittany Lions laid out for their new conference mates.

In fact, the new rivals might end up being a Trojan horse. (Or a Bruin horse, maybe.) All-time, Penn State football is 6-10 against USC and UCLA. The Nittany Lions are 4-6 against the Trojans. The most recent meeting was a 52-49 USC victory in the 2017 Rose Bowl, won on a last-second 46-yard field goal. Freshman Sam Darnold threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns. Penn State also lost to Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl in 2009 and 1923. The Nittany Lions beat the Trojans in the 1982 Fiesta Bowl. Penn State is 2-4 all-time against UCLA, though the teams haven't faced off since 1968. In that meeting, a 21-6 PSU win, sophomore linebacker Jack Ham blocked a second-quarter punt that was returned for a touchdown. Penn State finished the season 11-0. - Tribune Review

For the second year in a row Sean Clifford is likely to - and should be - the most scrutinized player on Penn State's roster. He's entering his sixth season on campus and fourth as the starting quarterback. The team's play has fluctuated in that time, with its appearance in the Cotton Bowl in his first year as a starter being the high point. Since then the Nittany Lions have generally been worse with certain high points mixed in. Their hot start in 2021 was arguably Clifford's best stretch of play, but in all reality it wasn't drastically different from who he has proven to be in the past.

He received plenty of credit for throwing for more than 400 yards against an inferior opponent like Villanova, but his best game came against Auburn. There were some of the errant passes to the middle of the field that have been part of his game since he became the starter, but Clifford was mostly able to manage a relatively mistake-free game. That's the type of performance he'll need to have consistently in 2022. Not one where he lights the world on fire and carries the offense, but one where he adequately distributes the ball to his playmakers and lets them make things happen in space. Clifford is a good athlete who ran the ball much less last year under offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and that should be the case again this season. - Centre Times

QB Sean Clifford is heading into his sixth season at Penn State and fourth as the starter. He's had an up-and-down career, but it's possible an NFL team will take a chance on him because of his work ethic and experience. While he could go in the late rounds, his age should push him to being an undrafted free agent. - Tribune Review

Sean Clifford's revolving door of offensive coordinators at Penn State has been well-documented. In his first three years as a starting quarterback, he had three different voices in his ear, from Ricky Rahne in 2019 to Kirk Ciarrocca in 2020 to Mike Yurcich in 2021. This spring, though, Penn State finally has continuity at its offensive coordinator spot. Yurcich is back for his second season in the position after a first year that featured a promising start and a disappointing finish.

The Nittany Lions believe that the benefits of spending a second year in the system will carry over to this fall. "Just being able to be in the same terminology, be in the same offense, be able to operate at a high level, it's just easier to make all the calls," Clifford said. "Just kind of opening up the playbook for me. I've always had to re-learn an offense or learn a new one, and now being able to be in the same one back-to-back years just makes my job a lot easier and really be able to master the offense in the spring instead of learn it in the spring and go into the fall." There will be plenty of eyes on Clifford this spring and summer as the sixth-year senior is back for his fourth year as Penn State's starting quarterback. Besides Clifford, who turns 24 in July, the room is young, with redshirt freshman Christian Veilleux and freshmen Drew Allar and Beau Pribula going through spring practice. - Tribune Review

Sean Clifford threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 4 Penn State beat Indiana 24-0 on Saturday. Jahan Dotson caught a pair of touchdown passes, Brenton Strange added one and Penn State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) forced eight punts, two turnovers and blocked a field goal for their ninth straight victory. Jordan Stout added a 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the Nittany Lions. Penn State opened the scoring on its second drive when Clifford scrambled left and flung a 10-yard pass to Strange with 5:28 to play in the first quarter.

Raheem Layne intercepted Clifford's pass in Penn State territory on the Nittany Lions' next possession. Although Layne returned it to the 13, the Hoosiers couldn't crack Penn State's stout red zone defense. They ran four plays inside the 5 only to turn the ball over on downs on a fourth-and-short try. The Hoosiers (2-3, 0-2) wouldn't get any closer to the end zone the rest of the night. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions responded with their longest drive of the season. They got a boost from running back Keyvone Lee who took off for a 44-yard gain up the middle on second down. He added a 21-yard run moments later to set Penn State up inside the 5. Clifford capped the sequence with a rollout pass to Dotson in the back of the end zone. The 8-yard scoring toss made it 14-0 with 13:31 to play in the first half. - Penn State/AP College Football

Sean Clifford passed for four touchdowns and a career-high 401 yards, leading No. 6 Penn State to a 38-17 victory over Villanova on Saturday. Clifford completed 19 of 26 passes, finding Parker Washington for two TDs and Jahan Dotson and KeAndre Lambert-Smith for one apiece. Tyler Warren rushed for a touchdown and Jordan Stout kicked a field goal for the Nittany Lions (4-0), who led 17-3 at the break in their eighth straight win. A week after outlasting Southeastern Conference foe No. 23 Auburn in a back-and-forth slugfest, Penn State showcased its speed against its in-state FCS opponent.

Clifford spied Dotson speeding through Villanova cornerback Christian Benford's single coverage and dropped a 52-yard strike into Dotson's hands for a 7-0 lead just three minutes in. Early in the second, the Wildcats pressured Clifford and brought him down at midfield for their first of three sacks on the afternoon. But the fifth-year senior popped up and fired to Washington crossing over the middle on the next play. Washington sliced through Villanova's secondary for a 52-yard score that made it 14-3. Stout added a 29-yard field goal before halftime, but Penn State missed out on an opportunity for an even bigger lead. Cornerback Johnny Dixon dropped what could have been a Pick-6 midway through the first half, and the Nittany Lions' final two possessions were spoiled by a holding penalty and a sack. Clifford continued to hook up with his receivers for big plays in the second half. - Penn State/AP College Football

After Pennsylvania passed legislation and the NCAA instituted an interim policy allowing college athletes to profit off their names, Images and likenesses this past month, Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford quickly figured out his priorities. Firstly, he didn't want any potential opportunities to interfere with football. And second, after a year without doing so, he wanted to make sure he could once again interact with "the best fans in the country."

The redshirt senior was able to satisfy both of those requirements with his first public appearance deal since the new legislation, appearing at Black n Bleu Restaurant in Mechanicsburg on Saturday afternoon to sign autographs and take photos with Central Pennsylvania Nittany Lions fans in a paid appearance. "I definitely wanted to do an in-person, public appearance, and I think it's really cool that we can do that now with the new bill," Clifford said. "This is somewhere where a lot of Penn State fans come to cheer on the Nittany Lions. The owner (Donny Brown) is such a great guy, and the staff is so supportive of Penn State football. I'm happy to be here." - Tribune Review

Sean Clifford dropped back in Saturday afternoon's spring practice at Beaver Stadium and quickly saw a blown coverage on the west side of the field. He lofted a pass to a wide open Brenton Strange for a touchdown in the south end zone. Later in the scrimmage, headed in the same direction, Clifford faced pressure from the defense and stepped forward. The redshirt junior stepped forward, eyeing the same side of the field. He saw 1-on-1 coverage and - while contorting his body and jumping off the ground - lobbed up a pass. Cornerback Kalen King came down with the interception. Those two plays show the contrast in Clifford's play. He can vary from drive to drive and struggles to find consistency. Entering a season with a brand new offense for the third year in a row, Clifford must find that consistency for Penn State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich's offense to succeed in 2021.

Following the practice, Yurcich made note of the need for consistency from his starting quarterback. "We're working on it," Yurcich said. "I don't want to give you an evaluation right now because we're not where we need to be. But the effort is there, concentration is there, the want-to is there. I don't know where it is, but we're going to continue to work every day. That's the biggest thing. Where can I help him improve? How can I coach him better? How can I get through to him faster to where we're making zero mistakes and he's on point? We're chasing that perfect game." - Centre Times

Sean Clifford is entering his fifth season as a quarterback at Penn State with a fresh perspective and another new offense. He's seen plenty of turnover in his time on campus, from teammates coming and going to coaches doing the same. He's now on his fourth offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in those five years, but is choosing to look at the bright side of those changes. "Honestly, I see it as a good thing," Clifford said Monday morning. "...I've had four offensive minds that I can pick...You'd like to have a little bit of consistency, but at the same time I feel like I've taken advantage of every single person that has walked through this building, from an offensive coordinator perspective. I think that's gonna benefit myself, my teammates and everybody in the long run as long as we just take it as an opportunity to grow and learn from every person." Clifford is the lone veteran in an inexperienced room and is utilizing lessons learned from the 2020 season - when the team started 0-5 and he was benched - to help him move forward and lead in yet another offense, this time under the stewardship of offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich. - Centre Times

Sean Clifford completed 17 of 27 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns to lead Penn State to a 39-24 win over Michigan State on Saturday. Backup quarterback Will Levis added a rushing touchdown and receiver Jahan Dotson returned a punt 81 yards for a score for the Nittany Lions who won their third straight. Payton Thorne made his first start at quarterback and completed 22 of 39 passes for 325 yards with three touchdowns and an interception for the Spartans (2-6).   Sean Clifford threw a 29-yard touchdown and Penn State's defense set up three scores with stops or takeaways on Saturday as the Nittany Lions played their best game of the season with a 23-7 victory over Rutgers. Penn State (2-5, 2-5 Big Ten) dominated both sides of the ball, outgained Rutgers 381-204 and held the Scarlet Knights to a season-low for points, more than three touchdowns below their average. The win was the second straight for the Nittany Lions and their 14th in a row over the Scarlet Knights (2-5, 2-5). Clifford opened the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown pass to true freshman Parker Washington with 3:32 left in the first quarter. It came after the Nittany Lions stuffed Johnny Langan on a fourth-and-1 from the Rutgers 45 on the Scarlet Knights' opening possession.

After a 30-yard field goal by Jake Pinegar extended the lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter, Penn State stopped Rutgers on another fourth-and-1 from its 45, this time on an incomplete pass by Langan. Devyn Ford capped the short drive with a 7-yard touchdown run for a 17-0 lead. Jordan Stout added a 47-yard field goal early in the third quarter after Rutgers quarterback Noah Vedral fumbled on the second play of the half. Vedral threw a 3-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass to Bo Melton with 4:56 left in the third quarter. An interception by safety Christian Izien at the Nittany Lions 36 set up the score. Pinegar added a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. - Penn State/AP College Football

Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford is a pretty deep thinker when it comes to his position. But he doesn't necessarily ruminate over the X's and O's of being a signal caller. He's much more profound about it. "One (term) that I've heard used before is your 'flow state,' " Clifford said during a video conference with media Saturday. "I'm actually minoring in psychology, and one thing that we've talked about is when an athlete or anybody really gets in their state of flow. It's definitely a game-changer, and it's fun when you get into that state and you can just kind of play loose. "I feel like I personally haven't been in that. Last year, I was. After a couple of losses this year, I feel like it's been tough to find that, but (Saturday), I just kind of let loose and had fun with my teammates. I felt like I was back to the Sean that I used to be."

On Saturday, Clifford directed his team to its first victory of a disappointing season, 27-17 at Michigan. Clifford made most of his impact on the ground, rushing for 73 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. He also had 163 yards passing with 17 completions on 28 attempts. It wasn't necessarily the biggest win of Clifford's career, which has included victories in two of three bowl games. But it was certainly significant given Penn State's struggles this season. - Tribune Review

After being benched early in the second quarter of Penn State's Week 4 loss to Nebraska and then not getting the start against Iowa last week, Clifford was back as the starter Saturday against Michigan. And he played well through most of the contest. The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Ohio native made smart decisions with the football - not turning the ball over in a game for the first time all season. He especially looked good using his legs. With 3:32 left in the first half, Clifford rolled left and looked downfield before taking off and beating a couple Michigan defensive backs on his way to the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown run that put Penn State up 14-7. - Centre Times

Sean Clifford threw for 163 yards and scored one of Penn State's three rushing touchdowns, and the Nittany Lions finally broke their winless skid to start the season, beating Michigan 27-17 on Saturday. Keyvone Lee and Will Levis also ran for TDs, and Penn State (1-5, 1-5 Big Ten) never trailed in this matchup of proud programs that have struggled mightily in this pandemic-shortened season. Hassan Haskins ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns for Michigan, but the Wolverines (2-4, 2-4) never found much of a consistent rhythm offensively. It was the 899th victory for the Penn State program, and the Nittany Lions had to wait a while for this one. This was the first time they'd started a season 0-5, but three impressive touchdown drives were enough to hold off Michigan. Penn State led 20-17 in the fourth quarter before a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard scoring run by Levis.

Cade McNamara, who came off the bench to guide Michigan to an overtime win at Rutgers last weekend, was off target for much of this game. He went 12 of 25 for 91 yards. Penn State marched 75 yards in 10 plays on the game's first drive, taking a 7-0 lead on a 6-yard run by Lee. That was about as smooth as it got for either offense, however. Haskins broke free for a 59-yard run later in the first quarter, and he eventually scored from 2 yards out to tie the game. Clifford was shaken up briefly in the first half, but after returning to the game he broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run to put the Nittany Lions back on top. A muffed punt gave Penn State a field goal just before halftime. Michigan closed within three when Haskins scored on a 2-yard run with 13:12 remaining, but the Wolverines couldn't keep Penn State out of the end zone on the ensuing drive. - Penn State/AP College Football

Sean Clifford, Penn State's junior quarterback, is one of 30 quarterbacks in Division I football named to The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list released Tuesday. The award is presented annually by the Davey O'Brien Foundation to the nation's best college quarterback. It is the oldest national quarterback award, having first been presented in 1981. Former Penn State quarterbacks Todd Blackledge (1982) and Kerry Collins (1994) are past winners of the award. John Shaffer was named a finalist in 1986 before helping lead the Nittany Lions to the national championship with a win over Miami (Fla.) in the Fiesta Bowl.

Clifford has appeared in 16 games for Penn State and owns 12 starts. In 2019, he was selected honorable mention All-Big Ten by the coaches and media. He completed 39 passes of 20 or more yards and ranked third in the Big Ten in passing touchdowns (23), yards per completion (14.0) and yards per pass attempt (8.3). Clifford finished the season with 2,654 total passing yards, and his 25 career touchdowns tie him for 13th all-time at Penn State. - Tribune Review

Penn State's redshirt junior quarterback Sean Clifford is no stranger to change. In his four years with the Nittany Lions, he's had three different offensive coordinators/quarterbacks coaches. Now headed into his second season as the presumed starter, he'll have a new coach in former Minnesota OC Kirk Ciarrocca, whom Clifford has had to get to know mostly virtually since the COVID-19 pandemic canceled spring football and sent students home from the university in mid-March. Despite the challenges of not getting to work together in-person, the pair have still been able to form a strong relationship since they first met ahead of the Cotton Bowl game in December.

"Clifford and Kirk's relationship is going really good," head coach James Franklin said. "I think getting Kirk here early for our bowl game was important...I think we're heading in the right direction there." The relationship between the new offensive coordinator and his quarterback will be especially important this season, as the new offensive will have less time to work together before the scheduled start of the season on Sept. 5. Clifford will be tasked with leading an offense that, less than three months until the scheduled start of the regular season, he hasn't practiced in yet. The overall success of the transition from former OC Ricky Rahne's to Ciarrocca's offense will largely depend on Clifford's ability to excel in the system. - Centre Times

Penn State (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 9 CFP) next week plays at No. 2 Ohio State, where the top spot in the Big Ten East will be on the line. With Penn State ahead by a field goal with 10:45 to play, Clifford led an 18-play, 75-yard drive that ate 9:01 and ended when he plunged in from a yard out to put the game out of reach.

Tight end Nick Bowers caught a 12-yard touchdown pass for the Nittany Lions Peyton Ramsey completed 31 of 41 passes for 371 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more for the Hoosiers (7-3, 4-3) who outgained Penn State 462 to 371. After going three-and-out to start the game, the Nittany Lions recovered a muffed punt and scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Clifford to Bowers. Ramsey took advantage of a safety blitz on Indiana's next possession and hit an open Ty Fryfogle for 38 yards to make it 7-7. Jake Pinegar kicked a 47-yard field goal to put Penn State up 10-7, but Indiana took the lead when Ramsey capped a 63-yard drive with a 1-yard run less than three minutes later.   Clifford, a first-year starter, leads the Big Ten with 288.6 yards a game, and his 16 yards per completion ranks sixth nationally. But Iowa excels at defending the pass. The Hawkeyes are giving up just 5.9 yards per attempt and have as many interceptions, four, as passing touchdowns allowed. "Looks like he's got a great future, so hopefully we can find a way to slow him down a little bit," Ferentz said of Clifford. - AP College Football

Sean Clifford threw for 264 yards with three touchdowns and ran for another score as No. 12 Penn State routed Purdue 35-7 on Saturday. The Nittany Lions (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) were dominant on defense, with 10 sacks, one shy of the school single-game record. The Boilermakers were held to 104 yards. Playing without starting quarterback Elijah Sindelar and star receiver Rondale Moore, the Boilermakers didn't cross midfield until their sixth possession midway through the second. Penn State jumped out fast, scoring on its first four drives, none lasting longer than 3:41.

KJ Hamler beat single coverage for a 23-yard touchdown catch to open the scoring and Clifford added a 3-yard touchdown run to cap Penn State's second possession. The Nittany Lions turned a three-and-out by Purdue into an easy score immediately after when Jahan Dotson caught a pass over the middle and raced 72 yards, getting a good block from Hamler on the way to the end zone. Penn State finished another quick drive with a 7-yard pass from Clifford to tight end Pat Freiermuth early in the second quarter. Noah Cain finished with 105 yards on 12 carries and added a 2-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth. Yetur Gross-Matos and Shaka Toney combined for five sacks for Penn State. Clifford completed 20 of his 29 passes. - Penn State/AP College Football

Sean Clifford threw for 398 yards and three touchdowns, ran for a score and carried No. 12 Penn State to yet another lopsided victory over Maryland, a 59-0 blowout Friday night that typified the one-sided nature of this regional series. Penn State scored on its first four possessions, led 38-0 at halftime and finished with 619 yards in its Big Ten opener. After Jan Johnson got things started by ending Maryland's first possession with an interception, Clifford cruised into the end zone from the 8 and the rout was on. After halftime, most of fans remaining from a rare sellout crowd of 53,228 at Maryland were the several thousand cheering for the Nittany Lions (4-0, 1-0).

Because the Terrapins (2-2, 0-1) won their first two games at home by a combined 122 points and Penn State was coming off a tight 17-10 win over Pittsburgh, the Nittany Lions were favored by only a touchdown. But past performances held true. Penn State leads the series 40-2-1, winning the previous three by scores of 38-14, 66-3, 38-3 before adding this romp to the list. Clifford threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to KJ Hamler for a 14-0 lead, connected with Nick Bowerson on a 15-yarder to make it 28-0 and hit Journey Brown for 37 yards for a 35-point cushion. After making his 14-for-30 performance against Pittsburgh a distant memory, Clifford remained on the sideline with 5:45 left in the third quarter and Penn State up 45-0. - Penn State/AP College Football

Sean Clifford turned in an all-around performance in another lopsided win for Penn State. Clifford threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns and ran 11 times for 51 to lead the No. 15 Nittany Lions back from a halftime deficit to beat Buffalo 45-13 on Saturday night. "Sean's able to make plays with his mind, he's able to make plays with his arm and tonight he made plays with his feet as well," coach James Franklin said.

Clifford, the Lions' first-year starter, opened the scoring with a 28-yard pass to Jahan Dotson on Penn State's second drive. He tossed a pair of TDs to tight end Pat Freiermuth in the third quarter after cornerback John Reid's 37-yard interception return put Penn State up for good. Noah Cain added a 2-yard TD run to give Penn State's a 35-13 lead heading into the fourth. "We weren't executing in the first half," Clifford said. "I take the blame for that. We pulled together and talked through some things and got it going in the second." The Nittany Lions (2-0) trailed 10-7 at half after the Bulls (1-1) had dominated time of possession to that point. - AP College Football

Sean Clifford's first game as Penn State's starting quarterback was a short one. A near flawless first-half performance backed by a dominant effort from the defense allowed Clifford to take the second half off as the 15th-ranked Nittany Lions hammered FCS foe Idaho 72-7. Clifford left the game early in the third after his 14-for-23, 280-yard, two-touchdown effort helped spot Penn State a comfortable lead in his first career start. He chipped in 57 rushing yards on seven carries and hooked up with receiver KJ Hamler for scoring strikes of 36 and 21 yards. "I need to watch the tape to really give an evaluation," Clifford said, "But when you score 79 points, it's not a bad day at the office."

Hamler, who beat the Idaho secondary clean for both of his touchdown receptions, said afterward he realized Clifford was nervous. "I just pulled him aside and just said, 'Calm down,'" Hamler said. "And he went on a little rampage after that." Journey Brown and Noah Cain both added a pair of touchdown runs while Ricky Slade, Devyn Ford and Nick Eury each ran for scores. Jake Pinegar kicked two field goals and Jordan Stout made another for Penn State (1-0). Will Levis threw a touchdown pass to tight end Brenton Strange in the fourth quarter. The Nittany Lions overcame early sloppiness before coasting the rest of the way to their biggest point total since an 81-0 win against Cincinnati in 1991. - AP College Football
