Jack Abraham, Mississippi State, Player News

Mississippi State added some much needed experience to its 2021 quarterback room Friday night when former Southern Mississippi signal caller Jack Abraham announced his commitment to MSU via a graphic on Twitter. Abraham, who previously played at Oxford High School, Northwest Community College and Louisiana Tech, appeared in 27 games during parts of three seasons in Hattiesburg. Over that span, the former Golden Eagle completed 595 of 859 passes for 7,067 yards and 41 touchdowns to 29 interceptions.

Abraham's best statistical season at Southern Miss came as a junior when he appeared in all 13 games and threw for a shade under 3,500 yards, while completing 67.9 percent of his throws. The former Oxford quarterback also led the nation in completion percentage during the 2018 season at 73.1 percent - nearly three percent better than second place and former Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew. - The Dispatch

Mississippi State went to the transfer portal for another quarterback. This one doesn't have far to move. Former Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham announced via Twitter Friday night he will suit up for Mike Leach at Mississippi State next season. Abraham, an Oxford High School product, played in five games this season as he battled a hamstring injury. He completed 97-of-49 passes (65.1%) for 1,224 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions. As a junior in 2019, Abraham completed 275-of-405 passes (67.9%) with 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Abraham has 7,067 yards with 41 touchdowns and 29 interceptions in his career. - Jackson Clarion Ledger

Southern Miss redshirt senior quarterback Jack Abraham has officially entered the transfer portal, a source with direct knowledge of the move confirmed to the Sun Herald on Friday. The decision to transfer wraps up Abraham's three seasons as the Golden Eagles' starting quarterback after informing the USM coaching staff on Nov. 12 that he planned to sit out the final five games of the 2020 season. Abraham will have one year of eligibility remaining after the NCAA decided in August to grant an extra year of eligibility to fall athletes.

Abraham battled through health issues for much of the last month. He didn't play in the 56-35 loss at Liberty on Oct. 24 after testing positive for COVID-19. He returned to make the start the next week against Rice, but suffered a concussion after taking a hard hit on a 15-yard run up the middle in the second quarter. Abraham didn't play again with third-string quarterback Trey Lowe III making starts in the 24-13 win over North Alabama on Nov. 7 and last week's 10-7 loss at Western Kentucky. - Sun Herald

Southern Miss redshirt senior quarterback Jack Abraham, who has battled a concussion and COVID-19 in the last month, has elected not to play for the remainder of the season, a source with direct knowledge of the decision told the Sun Herald. USM interim coach Tim Billings was optimistic earlier this week that Abraham would return to the field this Saturday at Western Kentucky, but Billings has been informed that Abraham will not be playing in the five games remaining in the regular season. Abraham remains with the team and hopes to help the other quarterbacks, the source said. A long list of USM players, including junior running back Don Ragsdale most recently, have chosen to opt out of the 2020 season and leave the program. Others who have chosen to sit out this season and transfer include redshirt senior defensive end Jacques Turner, redshirt junior running back Steven Anderson and redshirt junior receiver Jaylond Adams. - Biloxi Sun Herald

Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham returned to practice Tuesday after being out with COVID-19. Abraham missed Southern Miss' game on Saturday at Liberty for an undisclosed reason at the time. "I felt really good," Abraham said in regard to his first day back. "A little chest pain here and there, but I think that's just kind of the way (COVID-19) is. I never really had terrible symptoms, just had a little headache, achy, just kind of felt like a common cold or flu. "So I don't think I really had it as bad as other people have, but I feel like my strength and conditioning is really not as far off as I thought it would be." Abraham expects to play on Saturday against Rice, but it will be under the third head coach in four games for Abraham. - Hattiesburg American

Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham is one of the most accurate passers in school history. His passing efficiency of 144.48 last season is third-best in school history. He leads the conference in yards passing per game (278) and his efficiency rating (148.1) is up almost four points from last season. However, he and his wide receivers have struggled to put together four quarters of offense. Southern Miss has scored 14 points within the first five minutes in the past two games. The Golden Eagles had 17 points after the first seven minutes against North Texas but didn't score again until the last drive of the second quarter. "We've been close really every game," Abraham said. "We've been putting together some good games in the passing game, but not really what we want to do as a whole, but at the end of the day...as long we're winning that's really the only thing that matters." - Hattiesburg American

Jay Hopson is reportedly out at Southern Miss. Hopson was in his fifth season at the school and led the Golden Eagles to bowl games in three of his first four years. Southern Miss was expected to be a top contender in C-USA this year. Those expectations appeared all but gone when South Alabama rolled into M.M. Roberts Stadium on Saturday and beat Southern Miss 32-21. South Alabama came into the night riding a 15-game road losing streak. Southern Miss was once one of the top teams in C-USA but continued to fade under Hopson. Southern Miss is playing short-handed this fall after several of its top players opted out of the season due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. Defensive end Jacques Turner, linebacker Racheem Boothe, running back Steven Anderson and wide receiver Jaylond Adams all decided to sit out the season and were key losses for Southern Miss. - Denton Record

Senior quarterback Jack Abraham has always been an efficient passer. There's no indication he's lost that skill either. Abraham was 22-for-32 passing for 314 yards. He went into halftime having completed 12 of his 14 pass attempts, and one of those incompletions came on a drop. Despite the fact that Abraham has played for five offensive coordinators in five college seasons, he's still managed to put together a productive career. Given the way he started his senior campaign, it seems like Abraham could be on the way to another strong year. - Clarion Ledger

Jack Abraham opens his third season as the quarterback for Southern Miss. The Tulane contest last January was his 22nd career game and 21st start at QB (a 22nd start was at WR against Louisiana Tech in 2018) and he has now thrown for more than 200 yards in a game 16 times and for 300 yards or more seven times. Since the start of the 1987 season, the Golden Eagles have started 27 different quarterbacks. The three former Southern Miss QBs to make the most starts over that span include Austin Davis (45), Brett Favre (43) and Nick Mullens (41). Abraham became only the third Golden Eagle QB to reach the 3,000-yard mark in a season in 2019. Austin Davis did it three times during his career and Nick Mullens did it twice. In fact, the 3,496 yards for Abraham ranks tied for second for most passing yards in a Southern Miss single season with Austin Davis (2011). - Southern Mississippi Football

At the surface level, Ole Miss quarterback John Rhys Plumlee and Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham are classic foils. Plumlee is a Hattiesburg native playing college ball in Oxford. Abraham is an Oxford native playing college ball in Hattiesburg. Plumlee is a dual-threat quarterback with 4.4 speed. Abraham is a pocket passer with precision accuracy. Abraham transferred twice before he found a school where he could start. Plumlee started eight games in the SEC as a true freshman. In the past, QB Country has worked with Eli Manning, Gardner Minshew, Nick Mullens and Jake Fromm, according to its website.

Plumlee and Abraham have independently trained with the founder of QB Country, former Ole Miss quarterback David Morris, since they were in high school. But the lack of school activities this spring, coupled with the fact that both quarterbacks were living in Hattiesburg, allowed an easy commute to Mobile where each quarterback could hone their craft. "Jack can really sling it," Plumlee said. "He's got a really good arm and can really throw it. When you get around guys that are really talented, it pushes you to be better. We're not all working on the same thing in a sense. But we are all definitely pushing each other just by being around each other." - The Clarion Ledger

Jack Abraham passed for 351 yards and three touchdowns and Southern Mississippi rolled to a 31-13 victory over UTEP in a Conference USA opener on Saturday. The Golden Eagles (3-2) took the lead for good on their first possession. Abraham hit De'Michael Harris for a 74-yard scoring strike on third-and-14 for a 7-0 lead. Southern Miss made it 14-0 after Jordan Mitchell blocked a punt and recovered the ball at the UTEP 2-yard line. Harris ran it in two plays later. The Miners (1-3) put together two long drives in the second quarter but had to settle for two Gavin Baechle field goals and trailed 24-6 at halftime.

Kai Locksley broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown run on UTEP's first play of the third quarter to get the Miners within 24-13, but Abraham directed a 10-play, 82-yard drive, capped by his 6-yard TD toss to Jaylond Adams to provide the final margin of victory. Locksley completed 8 of 15 passes for 109 yards and led the Miners with 114 yards rushing on 12 carries. The rest of UTEP's rushers managed just 12 yards on 13 carries. Kevin Perkins and Harris combined to rush for 127 yards on 22 totes for Southern Miss. - Southern Mississippi/AP College Football
