Jason Brown won't try to win his job again. South Carolina's starting quarterback is in the transfer portal, he announced on Dec. 15, and will play his final year of football elsewhere as a graduate transfer. Brown, the Gamecocks' third starter this seas on, saw like everybody else the addition of former top prep prospect Spencer Rattler to the QB room a couple of days ago. Despite being nearly assured to start the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Dec. 30, Brown got a head start on his new recruiting world and hit th e transfer portal. Because he has graduated from USC, he can play right away next season at any school he chooses. When Rattler committed the night of Dec. 13, it threw college football for a loop, and the trickle-down effect immediately landed at USC. C oach Shane Beamer held a team meeting the next day and stressed that competition would always be a hallmark of his program, but Rattler's addition made the picture very clear. - The Post and Courier

South Carolina added two players to its football roster for the spring on Tuesday. Quarterback Jason Brown (6-4, 230) and wide receiver EJ Jenkins (6-8, 230), teammates at Saint Francis College in Pennsylvania, were told Tuesday they were approved for ad mission at USC and immediately committed to the Gamecocks. They will arrive on campus March 1. The two are from Fredericksburg, Va., and decided to transfer after Saint Francis canceled its spring season. Their goal was to continue playing together, and the Gamecocks offered them that opportunity. In 2019, Brown set a school record with 3,084 passing yards and 28 touchdowns. He completed 62 percent of his attempts. He believes the new offense Marcus Satterfield plans to install at USC will fit him well. - The Post and Courier

Saint Francis University, an FCS program in Pennsylvania that's in the Northeast Conference, last week notified its players that plans to play a spring season had been scratched. With that news, some players headed into the NCAA transfer portal. Two of t hose were the best offensive players on the team, junior quarterback Jason Brown (6-4, 230) and junior wide receiver E.J. Jenkins (6-8, 235), who announced a decision Friday to transfer. The natives of Fredericksburg, Virginia have played together since the seventh grade, and they want to continue to play together. On Tuesday they were contacted by South Carolina. If things work out, they could be headed to Columbia by the weekend. - Rock Hill Herald

2019 ALL-NORTHEAST CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): QB Jason Brown, Saint Francis, So.,...Brown, a redshirt sophomore, led the group of four on the second team after piecing together one of the finest seasons by a quarterback in Saint Francis and Northe ast Conference history. He set the single-season school records for passing yards (3,084), passing touchdowns (28) and quarterback rating (145.16) in 2019. His 28 TDs also tied the NEC single-season record while his passing yards were third most in leagu e history.Brown came on strong at the end of the year, throwing for three or more touchdowns in each of his last six games, including a school record five in a win at Delaware State in the season finale. While the numbers are gaudy, Brown also sho wed an ability to take care of the ball, throwing just six interceptions, the second fewest in the league, while completing 62.8% of his passes, also second best in the league. - Saint Francis Football

Jason Brown threw for 316 yards and five touchdowns as St. Francis (Pennsylvania) jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 35-21 victory over Delaware State in a nonconference game on Saturday afternoon in the season finale for both teams. Brown, who threw for 172 yards and four touchdowns before halftime, became the first Red Flash quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season. St. Francis (6-6) took a 35-0 lead late into the third quarter before the Hornets got on the board. Ra'Shaun Henry caught 12 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns. He had eight catches for 129 yards in the first half. EJ Jenkins grabbed four passes for 90 yards and two scores. Delaware State (2-10) was held to 69 total yards in the first half. Joel Denley ran for three touchdowns and Jason Brown threw for three more, all to EJ Jenkins, as St. Francis of Pennsylvania walloped Wagner, 42-8 in a Northeast Conference contest Saturday afternoon. Denley scored twice in the final six minutes of the f irst quarter on runs of 5- and 9-yards. Brown threw 2 yards to Jenkins to make it 21-0 at the break and Denley ran 35 yards to cap the first series of the second half and make it 28-0. Wagner, which now has lost six straight, got on the board when Ahmad Lyons hit Joshua DelCambre with a 13-yard pass. Denley finished with 11 carries for 85 yards to go with his three scores. Brown was 25 of 33 passing for 299 yards and three scores. DelCambre had nine catches for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Jason Brown threw three touchdowns to different receivers and St. Francis (Pa.) dominated Long Island in a 30-0 win on Saturday. Brown had scoring passes of 11, 10, and 79 yards to Ra'Shaun Henry, Terell Johnson and EJ Jenkins respectively. Jenkins caugh t three passes for 107 yards. Brown was 18-of-27 passing for 247 yards. St. Francis (4-3, 2-1 Northeast Conference) led 9-0 after three quarters. On the first play of the fourth, Brown's scoring pass to Johnson ended a 15-play, 98-yard drive that lasted almost nine minutes. After forcing the Sharks (0-6, 0-5) to punt, Brown connected with Jenkins to seal it. Clay Beathard threw for 157 yards for Long Island. The game was the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The sophomore signal caller accounted for 308 yards of total offense and both Red Flash touchdowns in a 14-13 road win. The 6-foot-4 right-handed gunslinger went 22-of-37 passing for 293 yards and two s cores. He netted 15 rush yards, too, including a key scramble for a first down on the game-winning, fourth-quarter drive.Brown completed his first four passes of the game, marching SFU into the red zone on a drive that ended with a missed field go al. The native Virginian sparked a second-half comeback with his first career touchdown pass, airing it out and hitting a wide open EJ Jenkins in stride for a 75-yard score that pulled the Flash within 13-7. Brown's second touchdown pass completed the co meback with 1:17 remaining in the game. Jason Brown threw for three touchdowns and Saint Francis (Pa.) dominated the second half on Saturday in a 42-14 win over Merrimack. The Red Flash (2-1) grabbed the momentum in the last minute of the first half, when Brown completed three-straight passes for 68 yards, the last 19 to Brandan Linsenby for a touchdown and a 20-14 lead. The Warriors (1-2), who are in their first year of transitioning to the Division I FCS level, had grabbed the lead on Darion McKenzie's 30-yard interception return of a Brown pass 1:08 before intermission.Joel Denley had a 5-yard touchdown run and Brown had TD passes of 4 yards to Ra'Shaun Henry and 11 to EJ Jenkins in the second half. Jason Brown escaped a near sack and fired a dart to Terell Johnson for a 35-yard game-winning touchdown pass as St. Francis rallied past Lehigh 14-13 in Saturday's season opener. Brown's first two career touchdown passes came after halftime during his fi rst start. Trailing 13-0 at the break, Brown threw a deep strike to his high school teammate EJ Jenkins for the Red Flash's first score late in the third quarter, and zipped the winner to Johnson with 1:17 left to play. Brown completed 22 of 37 passes fo r 293 yards. Jenkins led all receivers with 125 yards on five catches. He caught Brown's 75-yard TD pass over his left shoulder without breaking stride.Lehigh mounted a serious bid to regain the lead in the final minute. Starting at their own 4, t he Mountain Hawks drove 74 yards before Austin Henning's potential game-winning 40-yard field goal sailed wide as time expired. Henning had earlier connected from 21 and 37 yards. Lehigh's Sam McCloskey scored the lone TD with a 56-yard fumble recovery.
